- What is Kosher? Well, it's Jewish dietary law. Here I've given you the basics on the rules of kashrut, how people keep kosher in their homes, and what makes food kosher.

This was a great start for anyone who's looking for the basics. Just a few things to note:
1. Bugs are also not kosher (certain insects are, but that's a whole other thing), which means that just because someone avoids milk or meat doesn't mean they're keeping kosher if they don't check their produce, grains, or flour for bugs. For that reason, unless a vegan/vegetarian restaurant contains a kosher certification, people who keep strict kosher will not eat there.
2. There are a lot of kosher symbols out there and not all are accepted by all people. And sometimes certain symbols are accepted for most things, but not all things. A good example is any product that contains a triangle-K might be ok for a lot of things, but not if the product contains grape juice, because grapes are a special category of kosher and that certification doesn't follow strict guidelines with grapes.
If you're looking for a list of symbols accepted by most people who actually follow kosher guidelines, look on the CRC or Star-K websites.
3. The OU-D is actually an interesting kosher symbol, because it doesn't always mean the item is dairy. The OU (orthodox union) used to have a symbol that was OU-DE, which stood for Dairy Equipment, meaning the item was run on the same line as dairy items, but the item itself is not dairy. They did away with that symbol several years ago, so now items that are non-dairy but run on the same line as dairy contain an OU-D. Oreos are a good example of that - they contain an OU-D but Oreos are vegan and don't contain any milk. For that reason, many orthodox people who uphold the strictest kosher will also eat Oreos after a meat meal.
Always best to check the particular item, read ingredients, and ask a Rabbi who is knowledgeable in kosher if you're unsure.

I've known the basic details just from life (No thanks to living in Utah my entire life 😂) I actually take the time to educate mydamnself! 😊 I've been all over Google, but gosh, where to start, right?

PS, I am not Jewish. I don't practice religion, but do live in spiritualism, and with my MS, in looking for the healthiest, most adequate diet for my oh so sensitive G.I. 🥺
IE, I HAVE to have yogurt with my one meal a day regardless of what the main course is. (Food is very difficult for my uvula, as is swallowing)
Any rules on fruits, veggies and bread?
I'm really trying to heal myself with what God has given us, rather than the man- made, a dozen toxic medications and nonsense I'm currently being prescribed by my doctor.
Unfortunately, I do not currently have the funds to enlist a dietician and our food budget is shockingly low. ($300 a month 😬)
It feels impressive to eat healthy, but that's one of the reasons we're leaving the frigid Utah winters for a warmer climate. Should I be able to heal my MS the way I'm hoping to with this move, I want to plant my own veggie garden and grow, sow, do whatever I can to become mostly self sufficient with health foods.
Any advice from anyone, especially audiobooks (helps my cognition with short term memory loss) that pertain to kosher and affordable, healthy eating, I am open to all suggestions, experiences, anything you'd like to add!
PPS, I'm also sole Caregiver to my 20 yo son whom has Down syndrome and at no fault of his own, he has a rather large tummy (5'10" 265lb tallest person with DS ever! 😅) He exercises as much as he can with his physical limitations, he also just broke his leg which immensely decreased his activity. He's finally walking on it in its boot after 14 days stuck on my bed. I only have one leg that works among a plethora of other symptoms.
I feel that eating healthy (which I've always done my best at, as an active athlete up until my 2012 diagnosis.) My body just doesn't do well at all with sugar and food that doesn't really have any food in it! 😅 Preservatives are daaannnnger!!!! 😨

Along with myself and Big Moe, we're taking our angelic service dog whom gets a very strict, very healthy diet. MUCH easier to do though! 😂

Thank you so much for posting yet another informative video related to the Jewish faith and heritage. I have never eaten at a Kosher restaurant but would like to one day. I have seen at grocery stores and seen television commercials of a Kosher brand of hot dogs and sausages called Hebrew National. I really liked their television commercials while viewing them. And in case anyone's interested, a few more things:
1. The wait time is really between meat and milk, not milk and meat, unless the milk product was a hard cheese.
2. Wait times can vary from 3 hours to 6 hours, but it's really based on traditional wait times between meals, so there are some people that just do 1 hour of waiting.
3. Some people think that kosher is extremely restrictive, but it really isn't. You can find kosher in so many places you don't expect it and even in some you hope but doubt. For example, things like Starbucks coffee are kosher, but only if purchased from a kiosk where they don't prepare any non-kosher food, and only if you don't add in the non-kosher toppings or syrups. So there are restrictions, it just isn't restrictive. If that makes sense.

@@itsme-mt2fo Incorrect. The average wait time is 6 hours, not 30 minutes. And again, it's between meat and milk, not milk and meat unless the milk product was a hard cheese.
I like this idea for a video series! One thing I think you could expand on a bit is more animals (like bugs, dogs, etc.) that aren't kosher and why, and why certain fish aside from shellfish are not kosher.

I’m not Jewish but I worked on the ambulance in a city with a large Jewish population. There were kosher bakeries, delis, and at least one kosher market. There was even a kosher burger joint run by Chinese converts to Judaism. They had a “gentile” menu and food prep area. I have to say because of my posting in that city I have an incredible appreciation for kosher food. I can’t eat a tub of smoked whitefish salad with pita and humus in one sitting….can’t move afterwards but oh so very good

P.S. By far the most popular cheese in Turkey is 'kashar', originally made by the Jewish people in the community back then, thus, having its name from the principles used: Kosher. Thanks for this great cheese! Much love from Turkey
That's so interesting! In America we have something called "Kosher Salt" which actually isn't always kosher. It's a specific size grain of salt that's been used historically by Jews for the process of "kashering" meat. So technically it should be called Kashering Salt, not Kosher Salt. But it's used a lot by non-Jewish people and in a lot of recipes that Jews could never even eat like things containing pork and shellfish.

Yes. In fact a classic Shabbat dinner includes a gefilte fish and then some sort of meat.
So how far does no milk with meat go? Would chicken nachos still be kosher? The cheese is made from milk so?
Not kosher. “Milk” means any type of dairy, so no chicken nachos with cheese.

If some says that they keep kosher, they follow all the rules of kashrut. There are some people who are less observant who will only follow some of the rules, but they won't tell you that they keep kosher.

Yes, that's ok. There are plenty of cheeseburgers being made with vegan cheese or Impossible Burgers with real cheese being eaten in kosher households.

No. Kosher rules only apply to things that are eaten.
Does the cookware need to be blessed by a rabbi? And if if cookware becomes un-kosher can it be blessed again to become kosher again?
Yes, cookware needs to be made kosher (or remade kosher if there was a mixup). This can be done by "toveling", dipping it in the ritual bath called a mikvah. They can also be placed in boiling water of put in an oven on its highest setting. Every community is different.

The Muslim faith is for folks who were not born Jewish. At least that is my understanding. Muhammad is the “new song” that is mentioned in the Torah. The thing that is most incredible to me is the fact that the Muslims I met in Iraq, absolutely despised the Jewish faith. Even though they serve the same God. The fact that Jewish, Muslims, and Christians aren’t rowing in the same boat is proof to me that humans are great at being really ignorant. After all, all these faiths hold Abraham in a very high regard. Yet they are ok with killing each other. I’m sure that the Abrahamic God is very frustrated with all of that.
As a Christian I’m looking at kosher food daily but the scriptures state in Leviticus that this preparation of food is only for sacrificial offering,,, is this correct?

@@EverydayJewishMom it seems like Leviticus 1,2,3,4 talk about the preparation of the sacrifice offer to God cleaned with salt and the blood removed but different from the prep of everyday eating.
It could be. We don’t sacrifice animals anymore, so it’s not something that’s discussed much. Many of our current religious practices are in holy books that were written after the destruction of the Temple.
I know this is very good information but it's also confusing! It makes it very difficult for some people that want a Kosher diet to be able to follow a Kosher diet.
I love this video . I am vegan so essentially kosher by default from my perspective ( I say my perspective because I do eat at places like Qdoba and so even though my meal is vegan it might not meet others standards being cooked with other food
you also have to check that the rice didn't have bugs in it or any of the vegetables for it to be kosher

Are you talking about a food product that you make? There’s is a cost associated with having a kosher certification, but I don’t know what that is and I’m sure it varies. There are often local rabbis who certify local shops and there are national certifications who certify manufactured goods. Each community decides which certifications they trust and which they don’t. If you’re wondering about keeping kosher in your home, that is self-regulated.

You can get food poisoning pretty easily from undercooked shellfish, so that’d be my guess on why it ended up in our code in ancient days. Why it’s in there today is because of tradition.

There is debate about this in Jewish religious texts, but poultry has been considered meat in out tradition since about the 15th century. So no chicken Alfredo.

Some of the rules about kosher are about how the animal is killed and butchered. I'm wondering so what happens as far as hunting? You know shooting with a gun? How can that be kosher when it's not properly killed by slitting its throat?
In order for meat to be kosher, it has to be slaughtered in a specific way. So even if a cow, which is an inherently kosher animal, was shot or butchered in a non kosher way, it would not be considered kosher.

In Islam, there is nothing wrong in eating meat with milk & I think all sea food is halal. There are similarities and differences. Jews enshroud the dead body with white cloth after washing it, we do the same and then we offer funeral prayer.
There are purification laws. I think Jewish one's are difficult tho!
It's obedience of Allah but salvation is not only by our works. Yes, we'll be judged by our works but we can enter heaven only by the grace of Allah. Even if we pray for 500 yrs, we can't thank Him for our one eye.

It says to not seeth a kid in its mothers milk, that means cook it in the milk, it does not say you can't drink milk with your meat, I agree if it says don't drink milk with your meat. But it don't, all this set time apart from it, where is that in the Bible, the law. To many traditions that are man made, not in the law.

The rules of Kosher go back over 3,000 years, and the rules of halal are close to 1400 years old, if I’m not mistaken. This was a time when all foods were cooked from scratch. I’m not sure who they would be marketing to back then, especially when all your friends and neighbors were likely to be the same religion as you. I’m pretty sure that mass market grocery stores would prefer not to have to worry about having on hand certified products to be able to attract customers of all religions. If it is only a marketing strategy, it is not a good one.

Wonderful work. I take a few given allowances or rather the simplest interpretation of the food instructions as given in the New King James Version bible: allowed to cook meat then add dairy so cheese burgers are ok as long as the cheese goes on after the beef patty is cooked: any food is allowed when kosher is not available because I am not Israelite provisioned, alright but this one is more of a nazarite authorized exception; the Lord almighy's will being done by those under oath & holy vow is paramount; specifically: when away from the holy land as a servant of the Lord, assimilative manners are temporarily acceptable for necessity of foreign affairs. Also alcohol is not forbidden for the Nazarite, but rather soda, mead, beer. Wines & grapes are explicitly forbidden. Distilled alcohol is allowed.
Neat fact: it is the yeast that was being cut out of the diet of those traveling as ambassadors of the israelite testament. Same reason bread without yeast is explicitly specified. Mostly for the purpose of good preservation (bread molds in a weeks, whereas crackers are great for months) making the food availability from crops last far longer between harvests as well as creating food stuff suitable for long travel and uniformity of both nutrition & taste. That given: a lot of what makes kosher specific is attributable to cultural intelligence, social maturity, while peoples everywhere had to deal with lack of preservation capacity for foods harvested seasonally. Yes, Orthodox Jews will use meat or dairy substitutes to mimic the combination of milk and meat while still keeping Kosher. I can't speak to Hindu traditions, you'll have to find another channel for that.
It amazes me the similarities between Muslim halal and Jewish kosher food. Animals with split hoofs are halal to eat, with the exception of pigs and wild boars and their by products. Blood, dead animals are forbidden, and animal slaughtered in a non halal methods are forbidden to eat. Also birds of prey, scavenger birds are not halal to eat. And when it comes to sea food the similarities are almost exact between kosher and Shia Muslim halal requirements; Sunni Muslims eat almost all sea food. But in Shia Islam only fish with fins and scales are permitted to be eaten and they have to be fished out of the water ALIVE; shellfish, shark, octopus, eel, lobster etc and scavenger fish are not permitted. ِAlso in Shia Islam there are 14 parts of the animal that re forbidden: 1- blood, ( reproduction parts): 2-penis 3-vagaina 4-testicles 5- fetus... 6- glands 7- spinal cord (long nerve to the brain) 8-Spinal marrow 9- cerebellum (part of the brain close to the neck) 10- jaundices 11- spleen 12- bladder 13-eye pupil 14- parts of the hoof.
Why can’t you begin by explaining that the person slaughtering the animal MUST BE A JEW! It is very important.
A random person can’t just come and slaughter the animal and claim it to be kosher even if he/she fulfills all of the requirements of kosher, but the first (being a jew)!

Kosher sound ridiculous. Excessive amount of rules just because it was vaguely mentioned in some scripture. Imagine vegans refusing to eat with cutlery that has been used on meat before it was cleaned

@@lilicetg you don't have to have two kitchens and two of everything. All you have to do is kasher for Passover. And this is all in the Jewish faith and culture this is their lives this is how they're grown up how they've done everything. If you don't agree with that that's fine you do you.
