I bought a Callaway big Bertha 3H this year, didnt even get to the range with it ,used it in the round that day. Horrific results, Watched your vid on this and the very next round ,still no practice , I'm smashing this thing, 200 to 230 ,straight some fade ,and honestly a stinger everytime. No idea how to hit a stinger ,lol, but its beautiful. Off the tee ,fairway, rough, it's my favorite club in my bag. I was treating it like a driver , you taught me play it like an iron,. Thanks MSG, gamechanger .
Lisa, what is your swing speed? Thanks, in advance.
The touch your belt buckle also corrects the hands being in the correct height position. Being doing that for decades.
You don't know how bad I needed these tips!.. I had pulled my hybrid and 3 wood out of my bag and put them in time out!.. lol
Heading to the range later to work on this!..
Thanks again Matt!
I needed the comments here more than the tips. Everything I read or watch claims hybrids are the best thing to ever happen to mid/high handicappers, and I've spent years thinking I was the only golfer on earth who couldn't hit them.
Perfect timing. I just started scuffing my hybrids a few weeks ago. Spine angle and a few of these were the issue. The way the other parts of my game are at the moment, i could be a mid-handicapper if i get to flushing my hybrids more.
Great tips Matt. You have no idea how badly I needed to hear this lesson. Guilty, guilty, guilty, guilty, and guilty of all 5 mistakes which explains why I only hit about 10% of my hybrid shots decently. Never knew exactly what I was supposed to be doing with that club so this will definitely help my game!
Well another absolute great tip by MSG! I love my hybrids. 3...4...and 5 hybrids. They are the best thing for mid to high handicap golfers and even some low handicap guys I play with use a 3 and 4 hybrid. So thank u again for all u do for us MSG and have a wicked good Wednesday
Hybrids are my worst club. Going out today and gonna give them another try. Thanks Mr. SG!
Me too. Not trying again today, tomorrow...because I already know. Rather spend the practice time chipping, putting and driver.
Man I love my hybrids. Watch your ball position in your stance . Look at your target! Keep your eye on the ball.Fire away!
So...i combined what was taught here with the grip lesson and wella! Killing the hybrid!
They use to be my worst too and it was due to how long the shafts they put in them. Most hybrids are an inch or two longer than the iron they are to replace. I had my 4 & 5h shaft cut down to be half in longer than the 4 & 5i they are replacing and the shafts are a little lighter. Works for me.
These “biggest mistake” videos are great! Muddled golfers such as myself generally get the basics of “do it like this” but there are many ways to mess it up and it’s difficult to separate the signal from the noise in self-correcting. For me at least this series of tips are like Pareto Rule maps: fix these mistakes and you’ll eliminate 80% of your problems. Really useful, practical instruction. Thanks!
I always dodged the hybrids and fairway woods. Recently my 3 Iron broke and I tested a 19.5deg Wilson LP Hybrid. I gained massive distance and consistency. Love my Hybrid now.
Nice. I have the same club along with the Wilson LP2 5 hybrid, so the only "irons" I use are 7 - 9. In fact I'm considering ditching my 3 wood as the 3 hybrid hits almost as far and I'm more consistent with it.
Guilty of doing that low hand placement and delofting when hitting. Will definitely give your tips a go next time at the range. Thanks!
Great lesson!!! I love hitting my hybrids and fairway woods. The key for me is your tip #3. When I started lifting my hands it all came together. Thanks.
It takes some practice but, once you get comfortable, the hybrid 4 & 5 are fantastic clubs for the high handicap golfer. I am 79 and really appreciate their effectiveness.
Matt, great video! I rely on my 4 hybrid a lot so this video will be a big help. I love the belt tap tip. My only real problem with my hybrid is occasionally getting it too far back in my stance, so the belt tap will help. Also, I noticed you have your hybrid lined up under your left (lead) eye. This is the exact line up you showed in a video a few weeks ago one iron alignment. Very good, consistent, instruction. You're my go-to video instructor because you're so clear, easy to understand, and enthusiastic. Please, keep up the great work.
"Off the planet left" describes 90% of my golf game.
Thanks, you are spot on! I have struggled with the hybrids mostly I hit them like a fairway wood. Or slightly a little forward off center and get good results, but I have some shorter 4 and 5 hybrids that I tried hitting like a wood and struggled. My 2 and 3 hybrids are longer and I figured out I had to hit them similar to my woods. The 4 and 5 I had to hit more in The middle of my stance with higher hands and squared. Thanks for this!
Hybrid is my favourite club in the bag. Your demonstration is excellent!
Love those hybrid tips from you Matt. Just purchased two Titleist 818 h2’s (19&21 degree) and the last tip with the open stance was Gold (Jerry)…thanks!
Great tips today! My hybrid was feast or famine for a long time, so I took Driver out my bag for this entire season and played it off the Teebox and 2nd shot (where needed) it's now more feast and rarely famine and I think the feet placement tip is the one I'm guilty of and will work on now.
PS: when you're talking about the club face it would be more helpful if your camera would do a "close-up" shot while you're explaining it so we can see what you mean by the face being more open / closed/ neutral...etc... currently the camera is too far away for viewers to see the detail you're explaining. You do great videos now but I think that small change would make them exceptional and more relevant to viewers
Thanks sooooo much for this hybrid and long iron video! ⛳️ They helped me finally hit the ball solid and airborne! ☄️ I was extremely frustrated 😡 until and tried your detailed tips. 😁
Excellent coaching tips on your channel, straight to the point and nothing really complicated! /Greetings from Sweden
Nice video as always. Looks like you have been working your golf muscles. Looking Fit. How about a video on golf fitness to promote golf strength, distance and endurance.
Another great video. Thanks from UK 👍🏌
Holy crap. That's a lot of bad things you find golfers do with this club. I only just recently got the g425 hybrid and after all the bad things I heard about them, I was really hesitant about getting one as I am also a high handicapped player. I was going to get a 7 wood instead as I also have a slow swing speed.
I need not have worried. The only thing I needed to tweak on the club was to adjust it to 1 degree +. It complements my irons beautifully.
My Hybrids are my go to clubs. However, I sometimes aim to far right for some reason and pull the ball left. I will try having a more open stance from now on and see if that helps eliminate that issue.
Just started following you. Luv it. Mistake #3 (low hands) is me. Thanks for the tip.
The best hybrid strike/pure video I have watched.
I play with lots of hybrids. I like your advice here. Makes a lot of sense and I have found much of what your saying here to be true.
Watched video yesterday. Played a round and
Hit my hybrid 4 times with success. Thanks
Awesome video! I had that over the top move going for a little while and was driving me nuts! Thanks for posting!
Great video Matt. Thank you.
Definitely opened my mind up! I recently bought a hybrid and I know they can be very helpful and forgiving when properly used. And I didn’t really know where to position the ball. Thanks for the tip! Definitely going to practice this
Yeah!!!!! Awesome!!!!
Biggest mistake for me is lifting my head more so when hitting my 19* hybrid....other than that I hit it pretty well👊
Thank you for these great tips Matt. I`m really struggling with my hybrids, but will try your advise...👍🙏
I really enjoy your content and tips. You teach in such a way that isnt complicated. You have already sorted my wedge play a long time ago. Thank you for putting these put there.
Thanks for the tips, will definitely try out the setup next time I get to the range. 30+ years golfing, and I’ve always struggled with the long irons, so I bought a hybrid and struggled with it. I hit fairway woods great, but feel like an “old man” carrying a 7&9 wood for the longer shots.
wow what a gift video. I have 4 hybrids in my bag. I am going to try the tap of the buckle today. Great video like always.
I got fitted
And now having so much trouble hitting 3h and 3w
Those use to be my favourite clubs in old set.
I hit 3w great off tee on tighter par 4s
But top it and inconsistent off the deck.
I’ll try this
Thanks
I'll try these tips out this weekend. BTW, what brand of shoes are those?
Another helpful video. Keep up the great work.
Thank you for this video lesson. I’ve been struggling this season with my hybrids. Taking these tips to the range!!
I am so excited to go to the range and fix this now!
Great advice! I carry 3 hybrids. This works for all 3.
I aline my sternum with the back half of the ball , and I look at and target the grass immediately in front of the ball ....
Callaway B21s.... I love those sticks
Thanks for the advice! Going to hit the range tomorrow to work out some of those kinks
Great video , I love my hybrid it’s nice. An took me a minute to get it right but it’s working good.
Does the "Tap it and go" method apply to all clubs?
So important to set up so that a good strike requires you to clear the body. Then you can fully release without snuffing it left. These tips encourage that.
I'm anxious to give your tips a try. Thank you.
Good tips. Honestly I hit my hybrids pretty solidly, so much so that I carry a 21 degree and 24 degree hybrid that has replaced my 4 and 5 irons. I find I hit them much more solidly and get them high in the air much better than I hit a 4 or 5 iron. The only issue I ever have is hitting a slightly thin or fat shot. However, even with those mishits, the shots get out enough to not be a disaster.
These are great tips and they WORK. Hit my ping G410 4 hybrid better than EVER. can you do one for woods
Excellent well said, love my hybrid.
Good tips!
Just got some newer(still used) clubs and 3-7 are hybrid, I did have an older set of Adams that had 3 hybrids, (4,5,6)which I came to really like those clubs and knew when I got another set I would have to have hybrids as part of the set. This tip is excellent info as always! On another note, how are things looking for the REAL RUclips Open tournament? Loved the one you did during covid but am anxiously awaiting your announcement of the real deal. Now that your are here in Georgia, I might be able to actually see the tourney in person!
Great video Shorty.👍😊🕺
If that shot at 6:24 was off the planet left, I must be out of the galaxy when I go right!
Matt, What hitting mat are you using? It appears to be two stance mats and a hitting strip. Also, the surrounding flooring. Is it just turf on a hard surface or is there an underlayment like foam insulation board or foam puzzle pieces?
I really appreciate your insights into so many facets of the game. Please come back to WI with the GH players and review the Sand Valley courses.
Good stuff. Thank you for sharing.
Great lesson!!
Great tips. Love you, man. Keep them coming!
I use four hybrids 6,5,4,3 iron h b should I position the ball in the middle rather than one ball forward of center at set up ?
Just subscribed great tutorial thank you
Big fan of yours, I need some help with something, I haven’t play in about 14yrs, just started back, I’m an 2-handicap but can’t seem to get my timing down, what could I do to get it back, Rob from Shreveport, love all your videos
What about hybrid off the tee. Same thing? I’m a bit better in fairway then tee w/hybrid
I'd love to play a round with you. such a methodical golfer who is much more patient than i am. been golfing for a year... would love to see what one lesson from a "pro" like you would do to my game
Great advice, cheers Matt👍
Thanks as always Mr S G
Yeah, my 11yr old does mistake number 5 with his woods... but he doesn't realize his stance is closed... I wonder if there is a self check technique for alignment? Also, what kind of pants are those (I hate to even ask, but I need to reload my wardrobe)?
Mr Short Game, I have a set of Cleveland HB irons due to age. I am a female 63. I was wondering if I need to hit these irons as a HB club vs regular iron shot. Have trouble hitting sweet shots but when I do it is great. Can you comment on this???
Great advice
Great video man, just wondering what simulator do you have? I have seen those at some custom fitting places and thought it was awesome
Forget the hybrid, how smart looking are those shoes?
Thanks Matt love ya bud great tips
All of the above for me. It's like a I totally forgot how to use that nutty club. But this should definitely help.
lol I was acting like the thing was my driver 😩😩, this should help a ton
I fixed it by going to a 7 wood. Hit it so much more consistent and don’t get the 90 degree dead left snap hook that ALWAYS goes OB
terrific thanks
Great tips
My hybrid used to be the best club in my bag I would use it off most tees I could step up there and pipe it 240 straight down the pipe of with a little push cut every single time. Now I have completely lost it and can’t find it I’m hooking pull hittting soft ones right. Super frustrating club right now.
great video
Dude my man, appreciate ya.
One question out of the context of video. But, whats that black screen you have behing the white screen?
Perfect timing.. just got a new hybrid
to err is human but to hit a bad hybrid shot is the norm for mid to high handicappers. What I would like to know is if when you tee the ball up using a hybrid on a short par four do you move the ball forward in your stance so you hit up on the ball or is you tip to never hit up with hybrids fairway metals confined to fairway shots?
I thought the number one mistake was choosing hybrid for my shot. Gonna try these. I think #1 is my problem
Just explained my hybrid error perfectly.. hands forward.. guilty… ball in middle of stance.. low flight every time, usually straightish.. must be compensating and getting lucky, never feels like a great shot though
What hitting the hybrid off the tee? How would that work??
The problem my teitlist hybrid has a heavier head than my number 5 wood adams n my number u iron has shorter range than my 4 iron about 3 meters. I really use my hybrin so seldom n inget shank on it devot
All eyes are waiting for and on the legendary Bobby Jones East Lake FedEx PGA finale!
Hit slightly up with the putter also
nice for a 3 or 4 hybrid, how about 5 thru pw hybrids?
Just sharing … I also use shorter hybrids, #9 thru #5 (mostly cobra f-max airspeed - graphite) and I swing them just like my wedges, and they work great. I am struggling with #4 and #3 though as I bottom out behind the ball. I start with my hands low on all my clubs and as mentioned in this video just tried raising hands and setup with some immediate success. Hope this info is somehow helpful to you.
Any tips for 3w? I’m at 5 index who struggles with fairway woods…
try lining your sternum over the front part of the club head or middle ( you'll have to find which works better yourself) ...when swinging, focus on the grass just behind the ball...cuz thats where you want the club to hit the ground. ..
My normal shot with my hybrid is sweeping or slightly down, but I can hit up on it if I have to get over a tree or something
For the shorter clubs 6,5 irons h b ?
Very happy with my Callaway Rogue Hybirds, 3, 4, and 5 iron are all gone from my bag.
I can hit my irons no problem, but my hybrids? I'm going to try that ball position trick with the feet when I go out next.
More sound advice from Mr Short Game folks !
I’m guilty as can be when it comes to bad ball position with a hybrid. Except instead of to far back I get to far forward. Actually having the ball to far forward is something I have to be mindful of with everything but especially the driver and hybrid.
Matt..your videos would be better if you recap your tips in writing shown at the end of your videos? It would be more effective. Good luck !!
