This isn’t the only way to make vinyl tops for model cars, but it is the way that works best for me. Hopefully a few of you out there will find this useful.
Really like you're process for making a vinyl top versus the tape process I've some builders use. You're bare metal foil really brought the finish together!!!!!
Great tutorial. Lots of nice tips. The big problem with using tape is that over time the tape lifts. Guys say just add glue to the edges, but over several years often even the center starts to lift and it doesn't look good. One tip I might add, when you are cutting the strips to line up with the window trim, pick the body up and place your finger inside the hood. that way when you are pressing down with the knife, the force of the knife presses against the resistance from your fingers inside the car, rather than it pressing down on those A pillars. On cars with thinner A pillars that is a broken A pillar waiting to happen. Final result looks great.
Thanks for the tip. I just can't use masking tape for the top because I would just make a mess with it, especially around curves and corners. Plus like you said, I just wouldn't trust it to last, although many have sworn it lasts 20 + years.

Nice job, at 64 I just did my first vinyl roof with masking tape last week, it came out ok, a couple of slight wrinkles, I will try the painted version next time like yours, thanks for vidio!
Great tutorial. I've never attempted a vinyl too yet, but I have an upcoming build that requires one. I really like your process. Did you use Createx for the matte clear? Have you tried the Duraclear craft clears yet. They work well

Thanks! I mostly use craft paint for everything on my models anymore, including body paint because I can't spray solvent based paints in the house. Since I live in Michigan, that really limits my options for building in the colder months, hence my affinity for craft paints. I also get much more control over texture for the top using the craft paints through my airbrush.
Hi. Great video. I was carefully looking at how that acrylic paint went on and WOW, have to ask what was the paint thinned with, was there retarder added, psi and tip diameter? I only use water based acrylic paint since I spray in the basement. Thanks again
Thanks! I use a homebrew thinner. 3 parts distilled water, 1 part 91% isopropyl alcohol, and 4-5 drops of glycerin as a flow improver per 8 ounce batch. I use a .3 tip at around 22 psi. I have a craft paint tutorial as well.
I usually start with 6000, although I will go to 4000 once in a while. After that it's 8000, and finally 12,000, Then a polish with Novus #2, and a coat of wax to finish.
Thanks for sharing. I'm close to be doing my 1st vynle top this helps. Question though, I don't like using bmf so is this clear coat of to use chrome sharpie or molotow for trim ? Also what did you use to thin the craft paint . Just water ? Thanks again

I have a homebrew thinner I use. 3 parts distilled water, 1 part 91% isopropyl alcohol, and 4-5 drops of glycerin as a flow improver per 8 ounce batch. I actually also have a craft paint tutorial with the thinner recipe.

Thanks! I do have, and have used the Duraclear varnishes, but I do prefer the Createx which was used for the top.

...I am curious... how do you do or use for door locks..? A sewing needle.? I love the extra touch there.!
Thanks! I just use a painted piece of copper wire for the door locks. I do have a tutorial video on that subject for more info.

I use the wheels and bumpers straight out of the box. I just detail paint the wheels.

Yeah, it should have the same effect. The actual trim pieces might need to be a little bigger though.

How much did you thin your craft paint and what psi did you spray the top at...
I usually thin at 50-60% thinner, and spray around 22-25 psi. I also have a craft paint tutorial with the thinner mixture I use.
