This was a nice tutorial. The blue tape ALWAYS screws me whenever I use it. There is nothing wrong with this technique if it works for you then its another tool in your arsenal for building. I found that using the vinyl top kit from Model Car Garage works best! Also the slimmest plastic square rod works for the chrome trim edging at the base of the top. I have a tutorial on the 69 Nova on my Channel DMG Scale Models.
Thank you so much for your insight. I have had fairly good success with this method. Not perfect, but it works well. I’m heading over to your channel now to check out your Nova build. Have a blessed day! 😀👍🏻
I did this to my JoHann Plymouth super bird back in 86’ and it’s still staying on it well. But I used the two inch wide regular color masking tape for it and cut it down very narrow for going around the base of it for the edges trim . Painted it all black and the body purple.
Very nice work, if you glue a small hal f found strip the length of the roo of before you use the tape. You can also get the effect of that seam. I use to use a black cloth tape for car tops.
Used the blue masking tape to make a vinyl roof on my Johan Caddy ambulance that I made into a mild custom. Technique works great with time and patience! I used sewing thread to make piping at the seams on mine though
Nice video I have always deleted the vinyl top from the real cars cause of rust issues... But in 1/25 they dont exist 😂 ... So I may try one in scale... Thinking of using a decal for the mod floral top that use too be an option on mopars in the 60s and 70s... Thanks for sharing your technic. You earned a new sub.
I find that a thin layer of good old Testor's tube glue under the tape to be a good setting agent. It seems to make the tape hold up a lot longer, especially under hot paints. You just burnish the edges and go.
You should! I know you like the rusty builds and this technique works great for weathered vinyl tops as well. A small tear here and there in the masking tape gives a great worn out appearance. Have a safe and blessed day my friend! Merry Christmas 🎄
I've thought the same thing I'm doing a 73 roadrunner where I'm making a halo top trim using styrene strip for the trim... It a copy of the real car that the vinyl too is long been gone.
Great tutorial Steven! That is a cool use of painters tape. I will give this a try someday. Thanks for sharing! New sub too! We all need them...😁 LLAP 🖖
I've got an odd technique . I use to thin strips of plastic for the seems. The thinnest I can find. Spray the roof in a satin black primer for example. Leave it for about 30 seconds when it starts to dry, and then lightly drum my fingers over the tacky paint. So the layers of fingerprints create a texture. And then repeat, and repat again.
Great look except on the 70 Roadrunner the vinyl goes below the rear window in the back. It was probably about a 5” wide strip on the real car. It was by my first car. Grooving green with a black vinyl top.
That is an awesome first car. Thanks for sharing your insight on the vinyl top. I appreciate you taking the time to watch and respond to my videos. Have a blessed day! Steven 😀👍🏻
Lyle, I painted the entire model yellow then I applied the masking tape. Once the masking tape is in place I paint my desired colors with craft paint and a brush. Light coats of craft paint seems to work best for me. I apply each coat of craft paint in different directions (cross hatching) letting each coat dry thoroughly. I hope my explanation makes sense. Thank you for watching my video. Have a safe and blessed day. Steven 😀👍🏻
After I have the blue tape installed I paint it my choice of color. I use hobby craft paint (acrylic latex). I have attached a link to my completed Road Runner below. I appreciate you taking the time to watch and respond to my video. Have a blessed day. Steven 😀👍🏻 ruclips.net/video/sAEr8JaX8Kg/видео.htmlsi=c6SFh3zGQu-PQ2sN
Just saw this video and just wanted to know where the vinyl is. Just go to a hobby shop and buy a small roll of vinyl. Be careful when using a heat gun to remove the wrinkles.
Tom, thanks for your question or statement. I haven’t experienced masking tape breaking down concerning the glue. If or when it does, I will use it as a rebuild opportunity. I’m guessing you experienced this. Did you overcome it? Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experiences. Have a blessed day. Steven 😀👍🏻
@@scalemodelcarchief Here is a tip I have done successfully. I do the styrene strips thing first. Then I decanted primer and used home depot sponge paint brushes to dab the the primer on which gives you a textured to scale look . let a coat dry, apply to your liking then paint. The pointed and slanted edge of the foam paint sticks allows you to aplly right up to the trim without hitting it. I've seen the tape trick and it isn't wrong I just prefer something stable.
Great point. Has this happened on one of your builds? I’m thankful I haven’t experienced that happening on my builds. I guess if it happens it will be a good time for me to do a rebuild. Thank you for sharing your experience and thoughts. I appreciate you taking the time to watch and respond to my video. Have a safe and blessed day! Steven 😀👍🏻
I’m new to this, I’m not looking to do a top like this, but I really like how you explained everything here. Thank you!

A new blade would help lots.
Thank you for showing your way of doing a vinyl top you made t look easy I'm going to have to give it a try

Nice tutorial. I use gaff tape, its easier to shape and has the real vinyl top look.
Cool thank you for the tip.

I might do one some day.

I'd probably run my rivet maker along the seams to replicate stitching.. I do headliners with resume paper and the stitching looks pretty sick.
I've always wanted to try this. But I've always wondered about the trim. Do you simulate the crome trim?
I've thought the same thing I'm doing a 73 roadrunner where I'm making a halo top trim using styrene strip for the trim... It a copy of the real car that the vinyl too is long been gone.

You bet, Michael. I hope other modelers find the information useful. Have a safe and blessed day my friend! 😀👍🏻
Funny thing - It was cheaper for Chrysler to install a vinyl top and charge more for it then to finish the roof seams for paint.
Can you piant this after it taped?

What do you use on the chrome trim? Paint or bare metal? What paint do you use? I was going to use a vinyl top for my 57 ford.
I used a Molotow chrome pen for the trim on this build. It works well. I hope this helps. Have a blessed day! 😀👍🏻
Nice tutorial Steven
Thanks Tom! I really appreciate your support and kindness! Have a blessed day! 🎄😀👍🏻
Did you paint the roof before you taped for the vinyl top

So, do you leave the top Blue or do you paint it for the color you want the top to be?

What happens when the glue on the masking tape breaks down, and it will. It will peal up.

How about a Mod Top 😊 or Gator Top 😊
Either would be really cool! 😀👍🏻
It looks great…. Until the tape drys out and the glue lets lose!
