    Good tutorial! For small details, like vent windows, I have started 'painting' them w/ Molotow chrome. I purchased a refill bottle and dispense a small amount into a paint cup and then paint it on. What I have discovered is that if u vigorously shake up the Molotow, when dispensed it actually looks like molten chrome. Have u experienced any concerns w/ the lack of adhesive on ur BMF sheets? The last 2 sheets I got had little to no adhesive.

    • @ScaleModelExperiment
      @ScaleModelExperiment  Год назад +3

      Thanks Johnny for watching and commenting. I also have a Molotow pen but don’t use it much. I also fight with BMF as the adhesive sucks. I found the original chrome seems to work best these days.

      @@KevinWhite-zb5os no worries, I really wanted to show that using thin strips and actually placing the thin strips right on the cut line makes it easier to work with foil. The A pillar trick I like to use because foil looks clunky there. Most people don’t even notice that it’s paint.

    I bought some inexpensive chrome acrylic nail polish from an overseas website to use for marking /color matching things that I repair and found it to be a very nice finish. I used it on a plastic automotive grille and was nearly undetectable.

      Nice! There are a lot of very shiny silver paints out there that can take the place of BMF. I still think it is the best for window trims but for very thin areas paint is better. Thanks for watching, I appreciate your support 👍

    Very nice! When I am paint prepping a body that I intend on using BMF on I will use the back of an X-Acto blade to deep in the groove at the edge of the chrome trim so that I have a cleaner edge on the finished part when I trim the bare metal foil. I do this because I use automotive grade refinish materials basecoat and clearcoat.

    Hey James! Nice tutorial! I cut BMF the same way you do and I apply it right on the trim that there is little or no slivers to cut off. The reason is that BMF lifts off clear sometimes and I don't like clearing over BMF because the clear sort of gives it a crinkle effect which is horrible. I try to do my measurements with a small metal ruler and make the cuts on the BMF and not on the car, trimming off all the excess which is wasteful. BMF costs almost 10 bucks here so I really try to be efficient with it to stretch it out. Good to see your channel again since your move

      That vellejo stuff is meant to be airbrushed. I like it but nothing beats chrome from allclad you must paint gloss black first but you get a real CHROME finish. It unbelievable and at about $8 a bottle it will last a long time. Pre thinned for airbrush. A little labor intensive but well worth it

    I use different tactics for different models. Sometimes I use bmf sometimes I mask and spray gloss black then chrome paint. it depends on the complexity of the body, the amount of chrome on real car and where else it's located and whether or not you want an actual chrome or brushed look.

      Hi Darrell, the product I’m using in the video is called Bare Metal foil. It has an adhesive already on the back of it. Some people have problems applying the foil. I wanted to show my technique of using very thin pieces to lay it out along the cut line instead of using a much wider piece and having to cut it. Also I wanted to show the painting of the wing window frame as an alternative to using foil as it looks more to scale. Thanks for watching and I hope this helps your modeling journey.

      BMF can be challenging. I’ve found that using thin strips and placing it right at the cut line keeps trimming to a minimum. The chrome paint that I use on A frames looks the part when up against BMF but I tried it once instead of foil and just like you said it looks like glorified silver. My point is… use chrome paint for parts that are small where BMF would add too much thickness.

    After building kits for nearly 60 years I still dislike Bare Metal foil. It was always a hit or miss using it, stick, no stick, wrinkles and the final " look " of it in the end ,even falling off years later. I've tried all chrome look products to no end ( Molotow, foils, A/B chromes ...etc.). I finally came across some of Hasegawa's "Mirror Finish" foil and it was shocking. I foiled a Monogram 1/12 Camaro and I will never go back to using any of the other foils. Try a sheet of " Mirror Finish ", you will be more than surprised.

      Hi, thanks for watching. Yes the Hasegawa film is more like window tint, it stretches and adheres to flat surfaces. It is shinier than BMF. However it does not cut the same as BMF. Each has its own learning curve. I suggest BMF for muscle car window trim and Hasegawa for mirrors, tail lights etc.

      Thanks JP, I find that using thin strips actually makes it easier to manage BMF and painting the wing windows makes them look better than BMF. Give it a shot👍

      I assume that you mask a line and then apply the Molotov? Or do you have the gift of laying out a perfect straight line with the marker?

      @@ScaleModelExperiment to answer you're question yes i do straight line it but i use a fine brush, and no worrys if you mess up because it cleans up easy with rubbing solution i learnd it from maddogmerv the down side to it it can rub off you just have to becareful not to touch them areas

    For about six to seven Dollars you can get a can of 3-M spray adhesive and for about two Dollars you can get a big roll of aluminum foil. You can spray your own adhesive and have gobs of foil for next to nothing compared to bare metal foil brand which isn't much better than aluminum spray paint! I tried this on my 1/12 scale Chevy Bel Air and it looked dull and horrible. I stripped it all off since I painted the body with lacquer and sanded it to 1500 grit then polished it to a high gloss finish I didn't want it to be perfectly painted with a poorly done window trim. I use SPAZTIX for my models and it looks a lot more like actual metal than foil does.
