produnova was an amazing mix of artistry and athleticism. She has pushed the sport more forward than many of her contemporaries and I'm so glad the internet lets us see this great gymnastics.
Totally agree. My favorite team ever. I remember being obsessed with Produnova. Still am! But everyone was great. Khorkina, Katya, Zamo all incredible all around athletes. Even Kolesnikova had moments of brilliance and Chepeleva had a great triple full on floor.
dahighbar remembered when Russia was great! Had that country not split up they would've been unstoppable! Belarus, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan all those countries. Just think about it!
M.Derrick I have to agree with u.... when I looked up on Wikipedia, those who won the individual all around and team finals, from the the 50s to the 70s and part of the 80s, Soviet Union was so great until the 90s
@@TheMajesticice01 Russia never got split up, the Soviet Union did. P.S. I did get what you meant though, but just sharing a gentle correction with regards to a technicality.
What an innovator in women's gymnastics! This program is a perfect marriage of excellent tumbling and beautiful choreography, just goes to show you don't have to sacrifice beauty in the pursuit of difficulty. The choreography of today's gymnastics is a joke compared with the programs of the past.
Those first two passes would still be considered some of the most difficult in the world today. It's too bad the code of points at the time wasn't able to adequately reward such extreme difficulty. If only Produnova could have been around anytime after 2005...
jfeathe1211 i have always thought that Prudonova would be unstoppable in today’s CoP, she can do a 7.1 vault, great bar routine, beam and of course floor,
@@eh5507 Her vault is a 6.4 in today's code and was a 7.0 last quad. But otherwise, I agree, she still would have been a great competitor under the open-ended system.
THIS is artistic gymnastics!!! Head held high, eyes open, looking around the arena, using the music and performing a FX. All young gymnasts should watch this and similar performances and be amazed and in awe and wowed and try to be better on the artistic level. All gymnasts at elite level are technical, some more than others for various reasons, but we need to bring the artistry back to gymnastics again!!!
front layout to immediate punch double-front is a very hard pass that barely anyone competes (Japanese junior Sae Miyagawa does it, but she's the only one I can think of). Few gymnasts have this much front-tumbling in their routines because it's very hard to land consistently; Produnova was a real innovator in that area.
Such an underated gymnast, if she was born 8-12 years later, her power could've been put into great use, the medals she won don't fully represent how great she was, could've been a vault and floor gold medal contender, maybe beam as well. She could've probably remained an AA threat in Beijing as well
this proves that you can be a powerhouse tumbler and STILL have great choreography. Can someone send this to Jordyn Weiber and the up and coming american girls? Their "University of Alabama" choreo has got to GO!
Produnova had it all. Amazing power combined with style and the ability to dance, not to mention real presence on the podium. It's a shame she wasn't born a few years later, she could have absolutely cleaned up in the last 2 quads.
Produnova had qualified for the all-around finals, where she was a legitimate medal threat. However, she had broken her foot during the Olympics and, bitterly disappointed, had to withdraw. I took this out of wikipedia. In essence won a bronze medal on beam with a broken foot. I don't know if her foot was broken here. She's tough as nails.
It was on the vault - she went 9.800 on bars, 9.775 on beam and 9.725 on floor (should have been 9.825 if she hadn’t tucked the final pike front somi) - what a warrior! However after the competition was over clearly her foot began to stiffen up!
Avalon Avarice Russian figure skater Plushenko also did this -- focusing as much of his choreo as possible in the direction of the judges, the other three sides of the arena be damned.
For some reason the judges only gave her a 9.9 start value here. One of the other non-NBC broadcasts showed that the judges conferenced about her start score, which given how close the Russians were to Romania every tenth of a point was critical for Russia to have any hope to remain in contention for winning the gold. Not sure if she didn't get CV credit for the front tuck on her last pass since she had already performed it on her first. To think if she had gotten the 10 SV the Russians would have only lost the competition by .105. Regardless this is still one of my favorite Olympic FX performances of all time.
That was freaking incredible!!!!! It was a complete performance rather than tumbling interspersed with fluff that was a vehicle to get from one tumbling pass to the next.
@MoceanuReturns Agreed. The four of them had style and performance quality totally unmatched by the rest of the competition. Each of those routines is captivating and perfectly matched to their personalities. If they'd all gotten into the 9.8's, as they deserved, they probably would have edged out Romania for the title.
I love that team too. This 2000 team I feel is the strongest. The Gold was in their hands and they messed up and lost it. I won't count the AA because of all the issues and well Russia Dominated EFs like they should have in the Team and AA. Both are great teams. I like Lysenko from 1992
They only dominated in event finals since all other countries screwed up, the same way Romania won in team and AA due to the Russians crewing up. On vault Moya would have won doing her best vaults, and Raducan could have easily won over Zamo too. Khorkina only won bars due to Line Jie's hop on the landing. Beam Russia getting any medals, especialy Produnova getting one was an epic joke, Raducan and the Chinese being there and hitting crush them, even Karpenko beats them. And floor Romania would have gone 1-2 with Raducan and Amanar if both hit. And a sloppy joke of a gymnast like Zamo getting 2 event golds is a complete farce, and only shows how much a splatfest event finals were. Had a real talent like Produnova (not on beam, but on vault, bars, and for sure floor) or Khorkina gotten 2 golds maybe, but not crap like Zamo.
The best power gymnast pre-Simone Biles era was Yelena Produnova. Other's should watch Produnova she had power and artistry. You don't have to sacrifice both
I hate people who say the powerful athletes can't do artistry. Prodnova did, Komova has the hardest programme and Mustafina did before her. The best are those who combine power and elegance like these 3 and Anna Pavlova did in her 2008 as floor in particular
@dahighbar I second that! You don't have to be a ballerina in a FX to be artistic. Give the audience some form of emotion/attitude and we believe it. I think above all, gymnasts in general need to open their eyes and look around them when they perform to connect with the audience and draw them in to their FX. So often you see gymnasts holding their heads high, but looking down their nose and all you see are their eyelids. I LOVE this routine. A 80 second fierce story told perfectly!
Because Romanians play extremely safe and polish the mediocre difficulty. Russians go for the hardest stuff, inventing new moves and pushing difficulty to the limits. THAT earns much more respect in my book. There were however some very fine Romanian gymnasts who didn't play safe but they were much fewer.
I have to agree with you. The Romanians under Belu used to do uniform and lack-luster routines for any apparatus they were weak on, like uneven bars and balance beam (with the exception of Catalina Ponor). On vault, they produced two powerful vaulters: Simona Amanar and Monica Rosu. Floor was definitely their forte, considering they won it at the Olympics in 1980, 1984, 1988, 1992, 2004, and 2008.
Apart from everything else she has going for her, she has fantastic strength and poise in her dancing. Rarely, if ever, have I seen a gymnast with such confidence that could pull off a routine like this. Maybe Lysenko.
@loriolus I TOTALLY AGREE u are sooo right the romanians do a semi safe routine with numbers and the Russians did an all out go for it routine with Risk
0:58 what the commentator here says exactly what floor should be right now..FIG take note lol..this is how a floor exercise should be...individual and catered towards the gymnast. I love this routine and I would give this the Gold metal over any routine that is preformed today
People who didn't follow the sport for years talk about Biles. I was like Pre-Biles the power gymnast was Produnova also has a skill named after her on all events
@bbhouk1 Oh, okay. I thought you liked Patterson based on your comment. That's a relief. Well of course the Soviets were much more artistic and we can go all the way back to Latynina in the 50s. I do however like Yelena's dance from 0:46-0:54. I don't know, at that part I fell in love with her routine. Russia is definately declining in artistry. I just hope the new juniors can bring it back. I love Grishina, Dementyeva and Komova.
Why didn't Zamolodchikova compete in TF for floor she got first in EF so you would think that she would have been the Russian's first (or second) choice right?
@markelov - I agree with mmoran, I think Elfi meant something more than just "doing your routine in front of the judges". We can't really see it, but I think Elfi was talking about how Elena boldly did certain moves right in front of the judges' table. Those former Soviets (both skaters & gymnasts) have been known for such tricks w/ the judges. (Winks, direct eye contact, etc.) In the same mold, Jamie Dantzscher allegedly pointed at the judges at the end of her FX at this same competition. LOL
@ShawnVikaKomova2012 well it depends. i wouldn't call Yelena very artistic (as compared to what I think of as true artistry, like 80's Soviets) but that doesn't mean she's not awesome. And don't even TALK about that robotic crap of Patterson's being anything close to "dance"
produnova was an amazing mix of artistry and athleticism. She has pushed the sport more forward than many of her contemporaries and I'm so glad the internet lets us see this great gymnastics.
She can be a powerful tumbler while being graceful, artistic, and elegant at the same time. No gymnast today has all of that qualities.
The 2000 Russian team was possibly one of the most talented teams ever.
Jeremy Kinney agreeed. They should have won gold
Totally agree. My favorite team ever. I remember being obsessed with Produnova. Still am! But everyone was great. Khorkina, Katya, Zamo all incredible all around athletes. Even Kolesnikova had moments of brilliance and Chepeleva had a great triple full on floor.
To this day I agree. We it not for the mistakes on beam they could have gotten the gold. They were so talented.
When I go into the Olympics for gymnastics I want my Floor routine music To be the music from the 2000 Russian teams floor routine
Produnova and Zamolodchikova 😍
one of the greatest team final floor performances ever

Too bad she never won gold except in team competition. She was powerful!!!
One of the most creative, original, and well-choreographed FX routines I've ever watched! Well done!
Oh, my God, she's amazing. So powerful. I have not seen a gymnast do a routine like that in my life.
she's so intense, i love it

She almost does double front on every event
Vault - Handspring double front
Floor - Double front
Beam - Double front (dismount)
Yeah, not too much twisting.
Breathtaking! This has got to be the best athletic/artistic floor exercise I’ve ever seen. What a competitor; nerves of steel!!!

Few gymnasts have this much front-tumbling in their routines because it's very hard to land consistently; Produnova was a real innovator in that area.
7 years late, but Rebecca Bross also did that as her opening pass with a stag jump
Produnova was made for today's code!
Yes!
Who else got shocked at 0:47 ??
and that's why you don't see that move in men's gymnastics.
meeeeeeeeee
i second to that
Its called the Produnova. I wonder what the value for it is now in the COP
I was shocked. Amazing pass!!!!
One of my favorite gymnasts of all time. LEGEND!

I was lucky enough to be there and see this in person from A reserve right in front. Will never forget it!!! 🤩
this proves that you can be a powerhouse tumbler and STILL have great choreography. Can someone send this to Jordyn Weiber and the up and coming american girls? Their "University of Alabama" choreo has got to GO!
ViardotVSGrisi L M F A O
Wooooooow talk about throwing shade on Jordyn. I think her 2012 FX team finals was phenomenal
Edward Adaba Choreography wise? No, her floor routine was garbage. Tumbling wise? It was awesome.
Produnova had it all. Amazing power combined with style and the ability to dance, not to mention real presence on the podium.

What a floor exercise!!! Fantastic
i love how she is so serious and powerful
One of my favorite gymnasts of all time! Such power! Thank you so much for posting!
"And all of this directed right in front of the judges" hmm thanks for pointing that out there Elfi I had no idea judges were watching
They were referring to the fact she was facing the main panel of judges.
Avalon Avarice Russian figure skater Plushenko also did this -- focusing as much of his choreo as possible in the direction of the judges, the other three sides of the arena be damned.
For some reason the judges only gave her a 9.9 start value here. That was freaking incredible!!!!!

Великолепная гимнастка! ❤
Amazing!
Russia's FX line-up was just GLORIOUS. Incredibly hard routines (Zamo, Profunova, Lobazniuk) and such a great choreo. 2000 team Russia FX are the best
yes I agree, a ballet backround is always important and I wish more of the power gymnasts today had as much attitude and style as she did

wow!! I love the part from 0:48-0:53
@MoceanuReturns By the way why didn't Zamolodchikova compete in the team for floor because she got first in EF.
She also pioneered the double arabian punch front......back in 1995!
Lysenko in 93! Produnova took it to another level
her body type is so beautiful
I wish people stop confusing Artistry with balletic...This routine was very artistic!!!

Fangirling this routine for more than a decade now
The Yelena "cooter slam" gets me all the time. 2:49

Well said. Quintessential Russian gymnastics. I miss that a lot.

@USAGymnast Romania was way overscored on UB. If the scores had been correct, Russia would have won gold despite the falls.
@USAGymnast gosh..all produnova needs is a 360 element and this routine still works for todays FIG code of points
so bad she did a front tuck twice (first and last tubling), but that does not take away that this was one of the best floor exercises in Sydney
did she win gold
Really fukd that she didnt make fk finals..such a beast..1 of my fav Russians EVER!!!
She had it all.
damn what is the d score if this routine was used today?
Did you see many ballerina-gymnasts perform in the 2000 OG?
@ShawnVikaKomova2012
well it depends. i wouldn't call Yelena very artistic (as compared to what I think of as true artistry, like 80's Soviets) but that doesn't mean she's not awesome. And don't even TALK about that robotic crap of Patterson's being anything close to "dance"
Incredible and in your face!
wow this was a badass routine
what was her score???
what an amazing power she had!!
I know it may sound really shallow...but I feel that it would have made me enjoy her routine much more had she not been wearing anything on her feet.
she should´ve stayed with the front double twist to front piked as the last pass, in order to have 10.0 start value.
Produnova is such a badass
She was a beast.
Someone must have this epic routine in better video quality
Amazing that I think I can remember, but I believe it was a 9.712.
Una mujer muy fuerte y muy seria
