- In an attempt to branch out and try something new, Carcass set their sights on building a rally car. They sought out something inexpensive and fun, with readily available aftermarket parts. What better than a 1996 Honda Civic? Not only did it catch their attention, but it checked off all of the boxes on their wishlist, leading to an unforgettable build. The finished product exemplifies the capabilities of the Honda Civic and what you can achieve on a small budget, turning it into a machine worthy of the Carcass badge of honor.

I’m not sure if you guys will ever read this but It is always my dream to build my own rally car and this video made it all a reality for me, I am forever grateful.

Hey guys! I saw this vid, and it reminded me of when I was living in Minburi, on the eastern edge of Bangkok. There was a guy in the next 'soi' (sidestreet) whose business was building no-shit race-cars from the Honda Civics, that was the ONLY car he did. The customers would bring him the car, he'd strip it down in his driveway and rebuild it into an actual, roll-cage equipped, beefed up everything racer. He was the ONLY workman here whose workers had been taught to lay out parts like a surgeon's tools...seriously. He worked on my truck as a favor twice. Amazing guy and outstanding craftsmanship. He invited me into his front room a few times for coffee, the whole room was covered with pics of cars he'd built winning races. Incredible.
That's tight.
Whos the guy??? Does have socials?
Back in 1979 I had a Datsun 180B from new. I rebored the motor to 2100cc, fitted a cross flow head, did up the cam and crank. Cut on SS headers, 2inch exhaust, Garret t4 turbo. Datsun 240k 5 speed manual transmission. Rear wheel disc brake kit and It put out 210hp at the rear wheels on the chassis dyno.
When you take off, try letting the wheels spin in dirt a bit longer so the car caries more forward momentum before you bang 2nd, then it won't drop out of boost when you hit the next gear! Grew up building these cars. Too much fun
Exactly 💯
or wet the tarmac up for launch
literally bro
@@ger808?
Oh lord the cringe in your comment LMAO
I learned more from this channel in 5 minutes than I have from any other car channel in years. Thanks 👍🏾
From 93 to 203 horses is a huge jump. Crazy what you can do replacing a few components and a proper tune up. This was a great build to watch
200HP from a stock D16 with the turbo is actually impressive
no.... its not
built a d16z6 back in 2007 that made 327hp 226tq on 18lbs boost
@@TwisNinja that's awesome man!
We can get 240hp out of a n/a b16 in real rally cars (no turbo)
I thought it was pretty good, too. Especially since they didn't touch the motor....
i wish you would re upload the gsr swap civic you did back in the 90s. Im 32 years old and I've been watching horse power tv since I was probably 10 years old!
Found the video but the quality is not great . ruclips.net/video/oj0mWTdxPDg/видео.html
I think that video is on RUclips, but its like 240p
Lol me too but they changed the name so many times. That's all I watch when I was a kid on Saturday. Memories lol
@@RetroCheater81 i know it sucks
My 86 CRX was the most fun I’ve ever had in a car. It taught me how to drive with momentum and definitely prepared me for bigger and better things. I’m glad you guys switched it up to this because this is something the every day guy who’s already got one can do. A stock b16 with a turbo kit making 200hp is a very fun rally car
D16. B16 is something way different.
Facts
Yeah this is a d16y7. (Y8 is vtec) B16 made 170hp naturally aspirated and was a dohc engine
@@dhag72 some one that actually knows what his talking about kudos bro
Don't know to much about Honda's but how much horsepower can a stock D16 bottom end hold with that turbo kit.
I had a '93 Del Sol with the D16z6. It was bone stock, but with the roof off and the windows down, it was easily the most fun car I've ever had. 125hp may not sound like a lot, but with the light weight of the platform, it was... well, not fast, but it was plenty zippy, and extremely responsive. I kick myself at least once a week for letting it go.
I'm a 4th gen honda nut and have owned 6 88-91 civics and 2 2nd gen crxs as well as a 98 EK hatch. The biggest swap is ever did was a 126 hp ZC and these cars were built so light and nimble that even at that it was a blast to drive. A good set if H&Rs, and some grippy tires and they handle ridiculously well. Unfortunately they are getting hard to find these days.
@@vintagetweed i have a 98 EK3 civic, D15Z6, you could tell that it only has 115hp, but dose are the funniest 115hp that I have ever tried, the car is just sweet to drive, you don’t even need to drive like a maniac to have fun
This is the exact same story for me about my 91 Honda CRX EF7 with the ZC1.6L, 130hp at 900kg with a 7800rpm fuel cut, could beat on that car all day and it would ask for more. Miss that thing (In my profile pic)
@@docsgearheadgaming2503 same bro got a 91 hatch that i b20 swapped currently only needs a tune but from what ive driven it so far its loads of fun
it's crazy that after 280k miles it has the same power that it had when brand new
It's a Honda. They make amazing engines!
Their 2.0 F20C in S2000 made over 240 hp and could rev all the way to 8,8k rpm stock.
With a bit of tuning 300hp and 10k rpm isn't a huge achievement with that motor.
And that D16 in the Civic is a brick of an engine. People abuse the shit out of them and they just keep working.
The only thing consistently wrong with these engines is that they burn a lot of oil bc they're so beat up.
They barely have any torque and low rpm they don't have any power so you either rev them high or go at a snails pace.
My Accord V6 still runs the same quarter mile time that car and driver tested it at after 260,000 miles.
@DOGS LOL Their motors perform very well, and have the reliability of a boring Toyota. Win-Win
@@edim108 f20 revs to 9,000 stock, F22 revs to 8200. But yes very incredibly engineered engines. I daily drive my s2000 and have put almost 40k on it in just under two years without a hiccup
These are fantastic little cars. Great to see power nation changing it up a bit
wow, this a great segment you guys did. reminds me of watching tv series back in the days.
It's the the producers were playing mad libs with episode build ideas.
Today we're building a (power adder) (manufacturer)(motorsport) turbo Honda Rally car
Thank you for this video! 💜 I just bought a 1996 Honda Civic (4 door). I plan to do the same build.
In high school i built a 93 civic dx d16z6 darton sleeves .020 over wiseco 9:1 pistons eagle rods arp bolts and studs Bc stg2 turbo cam skunk 2 springs retainers titanium sodium filled 1mm over valves cosmetic head gasket custom intake cop conversion d15b lsd trans act stg3 clutch garret gt2860r turbo. Hondata s300 550 injectors 2 Walbro 255 in tank pumps It was a beast. Made little under 500
I love this show and the american cars you always build, but I love the fact that you chose a Honda which is something that is popular with my generation and nice to see you guys work on it and make it super cool!
You guys should to an all wheel drive conversion on that civic with S1 Built all wheel drive conversion kit. And then do a K24 swap plus more boost.
I NEED THAT INTERIOR FOR MY CIVIC... $500 🙏🤣
Simple, organized and detailed video on this build. Thank you it inspired me to finish my ek hatch too
It's absolutely wild watching this diehard American made vehicle series over the last 2 decades working on an import. It's nice to see them work on something different but with that power nation spirit.
*_Gotta love these unique civic builds. Especially on the legendary civic 97' hatchback!_*
Probably shouldn't use BOSCH spark plugs on a Honda. Next time use NGK
NGK is the only way in Japanese cars😂
OEM plugs for my 90 Civic SI Hatch were boring old Champion Copper, purchased from my local Honda dealer's parts counter. I think they were like 2 bucks a pop at the time. Gap properly and replace on schedule and she will purr like neko-chan.
How people work with imperial units and be precise really amazes me
Very cool to include a JDM import and as well shining light on a very overlooked motorsport, that has so much to offer for both driver and mechanics.
Excellent work!
Its a USDM civic. Just because its Japanese does not make it JDM.
@@BBk20z3 last I checked the Honda is a Japanese company? I would of simply said a import, but residing in the USA, many cars fall into that category (BMW, Porsche, etc). So I was specific to the JDM ( Japanese Domestic Market) Had I said great job on a RHD civic, then I could understand your concern.
@@CarsAndPablo Im not sure how you know what JDM stands for but not what it means. A JDM vehicle is one sold in the Japanese Domestic Market. A Japanese vehicle sold anywhere outside of Japan is not JDM.
From start to finish this was a very cool project!
I love that you guys did a Honda, but you missed a couple big opportunities for cheap and easy power. I guess you guys got denied on any kind of a decent budget, but you could had picked up a B20 out of a CRV and a B16A or B18C head to make 200whp to 220whp before you even added a Turbo. With the turbo, the B20 VTEC combo could had gotten an easy 350hp to 400hp to the wheels, depending on fuel pump and injector size and running E85 wouldn't hurt either. Same goes for a K24A2 from a 2002-2008 Acura TSX, Honda Accord or newer CRV. The TSX would had been the best option, but they are getting rare in junk yards. The CRV K24 or Accord K24 would had been a cheaper option and still a great block to start with. If you could get your hands on an Acura RSX K20A2 head, or a Civic Si K20z3 head, it would had been a monster. Hell, just a K20A2 or K20Z3 or K24A2 by themselves would had been a great engine choice to run a medium frame turbo at 8 to 10 PSI. The K24 block with K20A2 or K20Z3 head combo makes an easy 450hp and gobs of torque compared to the D series, or even the B series engines with a medium size turbo and a tune. There is also an all wheel drive setup that can be put together for all the Honda engines, the K Series, the B Series and D Series engines if you wanted to make the Honda a real rally car. I want to see this series redone with a proper engine swap and the all wheel drive setup done. And for the love of God, please repaint that poor EK Civic to a single color. You did good picking the Championship white, or the electric blue pearl, but not both or 3 at the same time. Just 1 of those colors and the car will look good, instead of having it look like a weird clown car. Come on guys. Talk to Jason Waters more, or K Tuned. There are a lot of good companies you could work with for doing a K20A2 orK24A2 swap. A mild K24A2 build can do 250whp without a turbo and 450whp with a turbo. I've seen K24 builds hit over 300whp without a turbo, so next time, please do more research on your Honda swaps. Kyle from the Boosted Boiz here on RUclips has the fastest 2nd generation Toyota MR2 in the world, and he is running 7 second quarter miles with the stock chassis (just a 7 second certified roll cage and some coilovers) MR2 and a turbocharged K20A swap. He also has a really fast K24 Swapped 1000HP Acura NSX, and an 800+whp all wheel drive Honda Odyssey Minivan. The K20/K24 swaps are so popular, they have kits to put that magnificent engine in 10 different cars at least. Besides being swapped into other Hondas, you can swap them into almost anything. You can put the K24/k20 swap in both the FC and FD Mazda RX-7, Nissan 240, Subaru BRZ/Toyota 86, older Nissan Sentra SE-R , older Toyota Suprax, Acura NSX, Subaru WRX, and probably a lot more I'm forgetting or don't know about.
Never, never put Bosch plugs in a Honda. That’s a no-no. NGK or Denso only, please.
Probably a sponsor I imagine
I guess they couldn't find any e3 plugs 😂
How come if I might ask I don’t know why it would matter but idk
It doesnt really matter
@@bauerleinjohn Sponsor nothing you heard the man you never put Bosch plugs in a Honda 😂😂😂
You cannot drive an old Honda and not have fun. They are such good cars.
agreed
Holding onto the roll cage works until you roll and you don't have hands no more , you need to make a hand t bar for the passenger side .
What the hell are you trying to say?
@Aaron Loos indeed
Man u grew up right down the street from Brenton productions. They were the people who filmed two guys garbage and other popular shows. Now I work across the street from it and past it on my way home everyday. I always see cool cars and they film occasional burn outs while I'm at work.
You guys are awesome! I'm entertained and excited watching this episode!
I drive a 96 Civic DX and they are awesome little cars. Get good mileage, easy to wrench on, and parts are cheap n plentiful too.
Nice! Curious why you put the rally lights in front of the intercooler instead of those openings farther outside?
A lot of memories with this video. I had a 99 civic dx hatchback with the y7. Favorite car I ever had
I Had a 98 cx civic hatch for 15years put 5ook still ran by strong ..still kicking myself for selling
these cars are tons of fun and actually produce 1hp per ci stock...this channel is awsome thanks
Man this is the first video that i see someone shares the torque value in the video
Good job man!
Never found out the last lap time! Did he beat 1.08?
really enjoyed this coimpilation of episodes for this fun build. thanks.
I just bought an OG set of those same wheels for my civic project. But since they are like early version they are stamped with Fifteen52 on the edge by the lil square windows. Sick design.
Fifteen52 are really nice wheels. Expensive. The wheels on this civic are essentially knockoff versions of the og fifteen52
longest Rockauto commercial ever!
I had a 1979 Honda cvcc and I loved that little car!
I used to own a 2002 Mitsubishi Lancer OZ Rally edition. $2.5k, 212k miles, my first ever car i could have fun with. Had her for 7 months till some old bastard pulled out in front of me. I was so heartbroken. I now own a 99 Mustang. But i will still miss that little 2.0 4 cylinder, she was my baby.
more honda builds please
Wish they would have did an entire motor rebuild. Would be nice to see the options and power they could get
why they didnt do a vtec head swap with the turbo build, vtec head breaths ten times better than nonvtec head
@@mikehowell6874 I agree it would have been better, but I think they just wanted to keep the build simple. I would have at least brought the head back with them and swapped it in a later episode or something.
@@mikehowell6874 breathes better but the vtec vs nonvtec heads are like night and day. vtec = more hp from rpm less boost. non vtec =more torque less rpm. torque and more reliable rpm for a stock 280kmile motor for this build is seemingly correct.
There’s a saying in rally 2WD class.
“If you want to have fun, get a RWD. If you want to win, get a FWD.”
Great thing about those little Honda's is that they'll run forever if you keep up on the fluids. the bad thing is the body rots away in the north. Had a 2000 sedan with an auto as a commuter car. Great little run about.
Love your doing a Honda build hope to see a B or K series under that Hood soon 👍🏼
I ran the parts dept at a Honda dealership for 12 years.(I was actually the only person in the parts dept!) I still would love to get a little Civic like this, and make a sleeper out of it. B20 motor out of a 1st gen CR-V, maybe lower it an inch front and rear, no obnoxious wheels or body kit, no "fart can" exhaust.
Its soo good.. very nice build.. id love to own 1 of those.
Happy to see you guys work on a Honda! These cars are so fun!
It Needs a K24 Bottom End With a K20 Cylinder Head 🏁😜🏁
Awesome Build dudes!!
That is awesome!
Always wanted to turbo my d16 so I’m not even mad you guys didn’t swap it.
This is possibly my favorite build here
Do a whole makeover series on upgrading and updating it, then keep it for sure.
I tore one of those d16's down and replaced the short block in my laundry room. Life was simple before I got married.
Amazing
Thanks guys for doing a Honda project please do more
can you imagine that now those civics are now vintage cars , kinda hits me in the face lol
Yeah I’m trying to preserve and restore my Integra GSR. 380k miles all original drivetrain. Got a permanent antique license plate on it lol.
wish this was in the UK My Car needs this so bad!!!
I had a 84 crx and I put a 87 crv drive line in to it for 4 wheel and it was a monster
So hyped I used to own a 06 in black the k series can make cheap easy power
Wow I didn't noticed that overspray 😁✌
Awesomeness
Thnx for Sharing......

Nice little ripper!
Boy do I miss my 92 Hatch. Baby pickup truck.
am I the only one that notice Jimmy King looks like Blake Griffin the former LA clippers' basketball player? Lol!
Good job
This was painful for many reasons but that paint job is one of them...
This is the kinda pimp my ride that I wish for.
i really enjoyed the civic build commercials that came in between the Rockauto video.
Those ram horn exhaust manifolds just look cool as hell
For me, it would make more sense (an be a heck of a lot cheaper both in money an time), to vinyl wrap a rally car. You don't worry about scratching paint, an can be re-applied. But that's just me, I guess.
My dad also has a mk4 Supra with a large turbo I love that car
Hmmm 🤔 for some odd reason I knew that factory fuel rail would magically pop up. They probably would've let it slide at the register if you wouldn't have taken it off lol..😂
Best show yet IMO. Super fun.
Shout out to Jason Waters and Chip Meyers from Jason Waters Tuning... that's my tuner and where i buy 90+% of my go fast parts. Best Honda tuner in the southeast imho.
A first generation CR-V would have been perfect for this. Non VTec B series AWD relatively lightweight but you get the civic goodies like double wishbone suspension & interior simplicity, and CRV goodies like enough room in the back for jack, tools, and recovery gear & decent ground clearance out of the box.
can tell they come from TV... lol.. miss the old days
Should have put a bolt on AWD system in there. They sell kits that convert them to an H pattern symmetrical AWD that can handle crazy amounts of power. There are dudes running 600 wheel horsepower builds and those kits have no problem with it.
If you guys ever come back to.this car, the parts from a awd crv will swap on with some work of course but then it'd be a proper AWD rally car
This is very surprising!

1:21 Correction there was a light blue Honda civic coupe that was done on Horsepower TV pre - Power Block/Nation and since Horsepower TV ultimately became Engine Power it was technically done on one of the Power Block/Nation shows.
Wow that paint booth has the dust extraction capability of an old lady standing there waving a piece of paper
As a Midori ek hatch owner. Glad you guys showing some Honda love. Next time do a engine swap and throw some boost. If you want to visit NASA, make it AWD
Y’all need to run ngk in that Honda. Vtec will foul any other plug. You will find out
lol this car doesnt even have vtec. vtec wont foul other plugs anyway smh you people that think you know everything in the comments lol.
I couldn't stop thinking "carc ass" lol
Calling that a rally car is an Insult🤦♂️ . My Civic rally car would eat that for breakfast and still be hungry 😋🤣
Luv the builds and solid production.
I currently have a 2006 Acura RSX base model with a bent valve and no 🤑 to send it off to a machine shop. So basically I'm in need of a K20a3 head or 1k Hondata and grab and keep/k24 head and be 😎. Lmk if you have any ideas.
Thanks
42:40 I work at harbor freight and I’m very surprised that I seen something from my store on the show
I would like to see more budget cars built similarly. Like a Nissan 200sx or a ford focus would be nice to compare.
Y’all were more than good using stock axles with that lil bit of hp
New pump from RockAuto... Holds breath
Didn’t know you guys were local to me. I’ve been to that salvage yard tons
i love this episode and civics. and it aired on my birthday.... but it just goes to show that even poor men can have a hotrod....
more 4cyl content is needed🤩
still watching the video, so many good tips here. im loving this
