There's something about these live performance recordings that is so much more appealing than a studio recording: a presence, a weight, an edge to the voice that's not heard otherwise. Her voice was so glorious in the early 70s -- darker, heavier, but still as fluid and technically perfect as 10 years earlier and with the most secure top range of any soprano I've ever heard. She remains, for me, the greatest singer of all time. If there are more selections from this recital the poster would care to upload I'd be very appreciative.
Wondefly amazing. She's incredible backed by jus a piano...or nothing for that matter. I have to say i quite like the photo. looks like a good laugh was had :)
Agreed about the photo! I never saw her look that heavy--must have been a bad moment. But the singing is amazing. God, Bonynge hustles her through the aria! Hard to imagine her keeping up the pace, but the coloratura is, as ever, magnificently clear.
The photo with her costar was taken around the time she made that Australian movie about a family in the outback, some 20 years after this recording was made.
I'm not positive, but I think the photo was taken after her retirement from opera (post 1990); she made a movie with this actor whose name I don't recall. Must have been taken on a promotional tour for it.

The picture is with the late Australian actor Leo McKern. I presuime it is from the time when they made Dad and Dave together since Joan's hair is the latter day blonde.
That may be the most unflattering picture of Sutherland I've ever seen... But anyway, this performance is lovely. I think I like it better than her Bell Telephone hour version.

Suth Pav You stated it perfectly.
I couldn't agree with you more! She was just outstanding in the early 70's - even for HER! 😃
Joan constantly astounds one....even when you listen to a performance over and over.
My all-time favourite aria, by the master himself. Joan Sutherland' vocal technique is litterally astounding.

is there anyone else who can trill like that? 'i suppose you're rather born with it,' i once heard her say in an interview.
She was a miracle!
The one and only Joan Sutherland.
Incredible.
Perfection!!!
Thanks for sharing this amazing recording. I have always loved Joan's rendition of this aria.
Stupendous!
Great singing from the great Sutherland.
I LOVE that grin on her face :D
Joan out sings herself, Bravissima !!!!!
The trills are amazing - the top notes are not bad either (= understatement!)

And she sings this piece amzingly well! But of course that goes without saying :)
INCREIBLE COMO PUEDE HACER ESO TAN SOLO CON UN PIANO...........CUANDO ESO TIENE QUE HACERLO EN UN GRAN TEATRO Y CON UNA GRAN ORQUESTA......

Indeed. One of the reasons Joan agreed to the flim was because Leo McKern was cast as Dad. They were both terrific.

This is not "Italianate" a la Ponselle or Freni, but who needs Italianate when you have facility like that?
ES UNA ACROBACIA DEL CANTO......Y NO NECESITA ORQUESTA PARA DECIRNOS A TODO EL PLANETA LA CAPACIDAD HUMANA DE LA BELLEZA DEL CANTO Y EL PODER.....
