I forgot to mention I installed the 20% underdrive gears. Since it comes with them it’s just a given to me. It kinda feels like it needs more though. I wish it would’ve came with 20 & 30%. The 10% is almost unnoticeable to me.
I definitely understand the outrunner AND the Fusion thing. The Fusion just being soooo precise on throttle control and FOC. On the other hand, I've been running outrunners on my crawlers for 10+ years and just absolutely love the torque-density and with the right esc, awesome low-end control. But the noise from the old esc's that uses the outrunners as speakers does get annoying. I was thinking a Furitek Python Pro X with a 2500kv Revolver from Holmes-Hobbies would be awesome. Never been a fan of Redcat's mediocrity on design and quality but they've kicked-it-up a notch on these new rigs and have peaked my interest.
Redcat has 9.5% under drive diff gears for the Gen 8. That's nearly 30 % total. I've done the same mods that you did and am loving my Ascent. Great vid. :)
I needed that un-cure adhesive remover!!! I used all the "normal" methods to remove the tires...and ended up MELTING the stock wheels and destroying the tires. Doh!
I was only successful at removing two tires. First I tried heat "failed" then I tried un-cure but the rims were super warped by this point so it only worked on 2.
All you together with different vehicles has to be so much fun! Loving all your great information. You tell it like it is, without the BS that others do that were sent free ones from Redcat. So obvious! 😃
Been waiting for this video. I'm stuck between getting another mini with the furi wagon or another 10th scale and grabbing this. You're making my life difficult!
My friend just got his blue Ascent, I will also get the blue truck but get rid of the back bed. Looking forward to seeing your other mods for this rig...
I get my ascent next week, I've got some stuff planned for it, I've watched your 24th scale content and I enjoy it so thanks for another ascent video it made me feel better about my purchase
Both are grewt options, for $10 more id get the 1800kv. Either one should work. Heard the driveshaft from motor is tight fit maybe putting 1mm shims when installing back together will work to give driveshaft little room.
Great video. Awesome tips and tricks. Thank you. I also trimmed the rear body posts. I noticed it was messing with the compression on the axle. Haven’t seen anyone mention that yet 🤷🏻♂️
I have a bunch of RC’s. This is my first crawler, it makes me wonder if I just should’ve spent the money on an better model Redcat or Axial. And thank you for the video man and all the links because it’s going to kind of help me get this truck operating a little bit better I hope 🤞
Great content, Matt! Didn't have the time this morning to watch, but good info as always. Gotta part out a few undesirables to open the stables up for this thing. So funny how many "comp guys" on social media are bashing it. Guess their $1,800 custom builds are triggered by a $300 Redcat with $300 in upgrades.
Really appreciate that! Yeah some people just gonna hate no matter what. The thing is really good for an rtr. Maybe it’s not quite as good as a fully built comp rig but like you said it’s at least half the price even when completely built and when driven by someone who knows what they are doing it’ll definitely keep up or beat most imo
Will the stock springs fit inside the shock body if you trim them down to the right height?🤔 Might be a solution to getting a softer spring on the inside of the front.
This was the perfect video to have playing while installing the Fusion SE in my Ascent. Did you happen to notice the passenger shock hits the pan-hard mount on the axle if you try to lay them back further than what stock allows.
Yeah. That’s really one of my only complaints with this truck. Kinda hard to work the front end out how you want. It’s very limited in the front due to the pan hard and shock mounts on the axle. You’ll love that se! It’s crazy smooth in this truck.
After trying pen springs and limit straps, i prefer the straps. Keeps full travel while limiting the body unloading im climbs and side hills. While you're trimming the body will you try to get it lower or is it on the shock mounts already?
The front is definitely noticeable higher then the back no matter what mounting holes you use. I actually raised the rear body mounts a little so it doesn’t rub & it still sits lower in the back. I’m thinking about getting Desert Lizard shocks to try out I’ve had good luck with them & are very tunable. I have the 20% underdrive gears in & that’s a big help. I’m wondering if I can get those gears in metal.
Yeah I’m hoping eventually the gears will be offered in metal. I run the lizard shocks a lot. I’ve always had really good luck with them as well. I really just wanna use the stock shocks on this to see if I can lol. Everyone kinda swapped to lizards in my area so I always wanna be that guy doing something different 😆
I’ve picked up all my stuff from either Redcat themselves or eBay for the Gen 9 axle parts which also fit the ascent. 1tenthrc has the servo on axle mounts.
I'm a somewhat newb to electric crawlers although done plenty in real life and fairly new to RC's in general and had been looking to buy my 1st without going all-in on my first rig. I can't believe the amount of hate that Redcat® receives and especially this Ascent from some of the "big" RC Crawler channels ans snobs (Won't mention names) Ya it isn't a perfect rig but for the money imo well worth the $289. I don't see any other brand offering a decent crawler with Portals and spares for the same money anywhere. What was the icing on the cake for me was when it continued to win in comps against guys with their $1K Vanquish customs. Guess no matter how much you spend if you can't drive it doesn't matter..
Do you think switching from a 90mm to a 100mm shock would be beneficial on a low center of gravity rig like this? I did it on my gen8 but because it is already a taller vehicle and top heavy, i didnt see the benefit of the extra travel, it would unload sooner even on the lowest lb springs. Curious for your thoughts on this though. About to pull the trigger on one and doing my research.
I’ve had great luck with the stock shocks and really don’t think I’ll change them but I do sometimes run a little longer shock on my builds that I’m trying to get a bit more flex out of. Especially when limiting them with bands. Kinda depends on the truck for me. I really like the shorter shock on this truck but something like my poizd or gshot build I usually run 100mm
Yeah both of them need weight. The red one is my father in laws and I’m about to put a fusion in it. He don’t know it yet but I’m ditching those stock plastic wheels he’s running and giving him something with some weight in it while I have it!
Why flip the rear shocks? What’s the benefit? My ascent comes mid week and if I’m gonna take them off to take the inner springs out and do the mini T spring swap, should I invert them?
It’s not much of a benefit but any extra weight down low helps so it’s kind of a habit of mine to flip them. Couldn’t really do the fronts until I did the servo on axle mod because the panhard mount was on the way.
Crazy response time. Thanks. I’m pretty pumped to get my first 1/10 crawler. As I don’t have an abundance of parts on hand to mix and match I’m trying to make the best one time purchases I can.
@@jonhowland4985 well I hope you love the ascent. Only real issue I’ve seen with them so far has been the mounts for the panhard bar. I’ve seen several broke straight out of the box. Even had one myself on my 2nd ascent I picked up. They replaced it really quick but it’s an issue obviously.
Probably not because of how the motor is mounted to those same towers. The real issue is you can’t lay the front shocks back much because they hit the panhard mount. That’s why I may just drill a couple new holes where I want them lol
Yeah I forgot to mention that but I did add the under drive that it came with. I did the higher 20% and it still feels like it could use more imo lol. Since it’s included it almost feels like it’s not even a mod I guess so I forgot to mention it haha

I needed that un-cure adhesive remover!!! I used all the "normal" methods to remove the tires...and ended up MELTING the stock wheels and destroying the tires. Doh!
Oh man! I’ve seen a few people with melted wheels lol. I was amazed how easily this stuff removed the glue!

Check RC4WD for the inner shock springs.
I'd love to have some rock like that close by. Your Lucky!

I’m In Kentucky. Lots of this around here lol
What are the length of the top links in the back I know you said they was Capra links to .
I got my son one and the only thing I keep having a problem with is the body getting stuck on the frame from the middle. Any ideas?
Great video.
Thanks! Really appreciate it
Its doing good without weight even. I don't think the other trucks can touch the Ascent for price point to performace.
I agree! Crazy how good it is. I’m gonna add the inner and outer portal covers next and see how it acts.

In this video I was running the og klr tires but I’ve really been loving the 1.9 ruptures on my ascent. They are the best tire I’ve ever ran I’d say
