Literally just getting into RC today and it seemed like a whole can of worms, particularly the whole rabbit hole that is batteries. I have immense confidence in myself to go out and start battery shopping like a pro now. Thank you for the video VERY informative. Definitely getting a sub from me sir👍🏻
Thank you, Richie. This was an excellent tutorial. I’m getting back into the hobby after 20yrs and so much has changed. Many thanks again- this helps tremendously. Best wishes
Just getting back into rc car and truggy/buggy 1/10 and lipo for the 1st time ever and this video explains lipo batteries mah and the "C" rating so easy to understand, now I know what to get my strada car and my ftx truggy. Great video. 10/10 rating in my book.
Awesome video i just got into rc world 2 months ago the only thing i wish i had done was embarked on this wonderful hobby many years ago but better late than never lol great information as i must master this crazy battery stuff to not get left behind lol
That pretty much sums it up. I have been wanting to upgrade my battery to get the max speed from the motor but wasn't sure exactly what I needed to increase, without hurting something else. This explains everything, without adding more confusion. Great explanation, thank you.👍
I knew most of this stuff before what hing this video, like voltage, and mAh (but I didn't know that too low of a mAh rating can harm the car). However, in places like C ratings, I had a fuzzy idea of it, but it wasn't clear to me. After watching, I understand! Thanks Richie! I'm going to be keeping this video in my watch later for future reference, or for recommending to friends!
A lot of people worry about the C rating, but basically it's like filling your car up with premium gas not regular! It really won't harm the enigne! It's the current draw from the motor etc that is the main worry. Even when Is started this channel with just 1 rc car I always bought the highest C batteries I could afford
Something you also need to know about using a too small battery: The battery itself can be damaged(Puffing up/explode) if you try to drain it faster then it's rating. For example: Trying to drain 200Amps from a battery rated at 80Amps.
true cells have maximum A discharge for example a bad 18650 has 10 or 5 A but a good quality samsung 3000 mah can discharge 20A and those bad cells with low A discharge also have very low capacity compared to what is written on them
Thank you! I am coming back after 20 years of not using RC. My last car I used was back in 2000 was a HPI RS4 Nitro. So I am clueless about Electric. This has helped me out a TON understanding the Batteries. I just got a 6S Notorious to get back in the game but I haven't bought batteries yet. Wanted to do my research first. Not looking to Damage my toy. Thanks again! 👍👍
Same here I had the same truck back then also. Wish I never sold it had most of the aluminum bits for it too. I picked up a rc at a garage sale for $20. I'm in Canada. Needed batteries and a new ecu Got the hobbywing ezrun 10bl120a And the 3652-3250kv motor combo. Just got it all working. I only have 1 2s lipo at the moment. Gonna let the kids run on that and am currently trying to figure out what 3s to throw in it.
@@nealcoles3359 So now a year later i have used the Zeee 11.1V Lipo Battery 3S 100C 8000mAh Hard Case Battery with EC5 Plug. You can get them with different plugs. But they have not let me down. So for a year now i have had no issues and they run good. Hope this helps. They make better but these worked well for me.
You can run a 1000c battery on a 50a esc. It’s only if the motor can draw too much current and the battery can supply that current that a esc will die from too much current.
Great Video, I have a 5000mah 100c with 2s esc and 8200kv motor.. wasn’t sure if the combination was too much.. but this video showed me that I’m doing the right thing ..my rc performs very fast and aggressive👍🏾 thanks
Best and most understandable explanation of this topic, thank you! I literally just did a mini marathon of videos on this topic and after watching yours, finally feel like I understand batteries better! Thank you.
Nice video. For those ZOP lipos in the description, how much worse is the performance compared to more expensive gens ace and powerhobby? I have powerhobby lipos at the moment and they're good but getting a bit old. For bashing should I spend the money on expensive lipos or just get the zop ones?
Hi Richie, with no information in the manual and the size of battery in the 'Extras' Package' offered for sale with the car how do you calculate the right size battery for your car? I have a Axial SCX6 Honcho for 'Trail Walking', the suggested battery size 11.1 Lipo. I only use NiMH batteries (my own choice) and it would seem a 9.6 volt Nimh might be a good alternative. Could I go lower say 8.4 V or 7.2? I understand from your excellent Video how mAh can effect the run time, I think 56000 mAh is the highest I can get but I could carry a couple of 3000 mAh batteries for equal run time. Any advice welcome, and best wishes.
I use to race 1/10 electric 4wd rc when I was a boy like 35+ years ago. Just getting back into it hoping to get my son into it. Nicad was the battery used back in my day hahaha. Question, in a racing situation with lipo do people use the smallest capacity possible to save weight?
Hi buddy just gave you a sub. I’m totally new to RC and just ordered my first car. Can you buy a 12v charger to charge your batteries while in the field ? Thanks for the video Paul
I always like hard shell for abrasion resistance while in the vehicle. I always find rocks and dirt under the battery and like the hard shell for keeping the pack from wearing through to the batteries.
Good video. Explains alot clearly.. I have a question that wasnt covered. I race rc cars, and use a 6600mah intellec lipo 2s. I think races use about 2000mah. How many of the mah of the battery can be used before taking the battery below its safe discharge? Like could i safely get 3 races out of a pack?
I'm going to get into RC and this helped me know what battery I should use when I get my First first RC car it can run on 2s or 3s batteries but to use a 3s battery I would have to buy different gears to add to the car to use a 3s battery and it will make the car go 70 miles an hour but I'm going to just stick to a 2s battery which the car will only go 44 miles an hour which I'm fine with that.
The *exact* video that I was looking for. I'm *brand* brand new to the hobby with very little knowledge of lipo care that's carried over from airsofting. C rating isn't something that we had to consider in airsoft, at least not back when I was active. I have only just ordered my first rc car on an impulse, hyper go 14303, and was thoroughly confused by the 25C first party battery packs being so expensive. I started looking at 3rd party packs only to see 50C+ being the most common and readily accessible. After running amperage calcs to see if the 45amp esc, that I think the 14303 has, could handle the 50C+ packs... I ended up scared myself off any of those high C rated battery packs. Elsewhere online makes this all out to be a "Bigger peg than the hole" kind of issue where having a higher C rating will kill your esc immediately.
Hi Richie, I'm new to this. I bought an RC truck for my son with a 7.4v / 1200ma battery. The problem is that it lasts only 15 to 20 mins max. Which bigger battery can I use safely to last longer. We are not worried about speed, we want him to enjoy the car longer
Okay I hope you see this but what is the safest when it comes to the battery overheating while charging then exploding. My NiMH battery exploded yesterday and I wanted to know what is least likely to explode (examples of what I am looking for is NiMH, or lipo batteries stuff like that)
