In case yall weren't around during this time, this movie was so popular because this was the first time you ever saw close realism cgi used so abundantly, movies had it here and there but this one was full of it and it blew a lot of people's minds. Now we see it in all Marvel movies but this was the first of its kind back then

The 3D was what sold this movie. no one had done a fullt stereo movie like this before.
The thing is though, that this CG is still better than most modern marvel films

Avatar relied on word of mouth - it was a standalone film with no prequels to hype it up so audiences had to see it then tell their friends to see it. It also had a later China release. Avatar only had an 11% drop from opening weekend to weekend 3 which is crazy - it's box office was generated over time. Endgame has had 11 years to hype itself up and so its opening weekend was insane. But it had a 59% drop from opening weekend. The way they're generating their money is so incredibly different it's hard to predict.

It was amazing on IMAX. I remember in 2009 we were all shocked and awe. I know this is cliche but this film looked ahead of its time in the late 2000s.

Dad took me when I was 11 years old to see this and I still haven’t had a movie experience like it since. Sure the special effects were good but the movie was just epic.

Cameron wrote this movie as Project 880 in 1994 before coming up with the name Avatar and he wanted to film it in 1997 for a 2000 release date but decided that the technology wasn't on par or there just to satisfy his notions and had to wait until the technology gets better

Is it just me?, the more i watch this movie, the more i'll enjoy it and like it, which is kind of weird cause Avatar is a good film at best.
It was it's groundbreaking visual effects that were breathtaking that made the film 2x better. One of very few films i regret that i didn't watch it movie in theaters on IMAX 3D.

Avatar 2 Trailer: 20 million views in 13 days.
The reason Avatar 2 is taking so long is because James Cameron is shooting the film in higher frame rate which as he stated takes the glass out of the window to reality. This would imply that either a downgraded version would be required for release in majority of theatres across the world or this movie would be a pioneer in the attempts to get a higher frame rate into cinemas worldwide. Avatar 2, 3 and 4 have all confirmed to be released back to back 2017, 2018 and 2019 filming non stop. I think it's one the most ambitious film projects ever undertaken. Similar to the LOTR trilogy.

Still looks incredible in 2022. No wonder our minds were blown in 2009. It was in a different league to other special effects.
I remember seeing this trailer for the first time. It’s almost like it has 3 acts, each act changes into the next signaled by a change in the music. The trailer gets more and more fantastical and over the top as it goes on and I think that’s what made this trailer so enticing. I haven’t seen a trailer like this since Inception, so many absolutely amazing scenes shown with zero context made me anxious to see it in theaters, and it didn’t disappoint.
Nearly 10 years on and this movie still holds it own on a whole other level. Can’t wait to see Avatar 2, if they did this 9 years ago, I get really excited when I think about the possibilities of what they can do now. Amazing movie.

In my opinion, Jake Sully's character form the 1st one to its sequel had changed so much. He has so much bravery and conviction from the 1st one. I hope the next sequel will be a redemption for him
Well in the first one Jake had nothing to really loose. In the second he had everything to loose. He wasn't just thinking for himself but for his entire family who aren't old enough to properly defend themselves.
In the first movie he started off not really caring for much of anything. To be honest he was just going with the flow. He never really truly picked a side wether it was the military or the scientists in the beginning.
If Cameron's titanic released on 2018 or 19 endgame can't reach his box office collection.

James Cameron knows what the everyday people want to see he care less about film critics and film circles. That’s why his film always make bank. It’s no mistake, he repeatedly mentions the audience he goes for, so he know exactly what he doing when he make his movies and this is why I’m not betting against him with Avatar 2. He always comes through.

+jianfei shao Avatar thrived on people watching it in 3D for MONTHS on end in the theaters (Avatar stayed in theaters till August 2010, eight months total).
Also, 6 years is NOT that impressive. E.T. held the record for 10 years, Birth of a Nation (1915) for 23 years, and Gone with the Wind was unmatched in box office gross for 25 years.
The real question is, will Avatar 2 be able to top Star Wars Episode VII, which I GUARANTEE you will beat out Avatar by next year.

Every successful movie had to thrive on something, I can also argue that the original Star Wars thrived on lack of competition, no piracy, lack of TV entertainment, lack of big screen TV, lack of DVD/BluRay/VHS Market, and a whole lot of other factors which could not exist to benefit any film released today. As a result, people rushed back to theater to see Star Wars again and again and again because that's the only way they can see it, and there's not much alternatives. Avatar pushed the boundries of 3D to a point no film has done before, and it deserves to get that credit.

My question is (and I find this quite funny), if Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, The Phantom Menace, and Revenge of the Sith came nowhere close to all time highest grossing film globally, what makes you think The Force Awakens can do it? You think Avatar is that easy to overtake?

Watched Avatar again recently. It still looks and feels like the future of film.
I'd be happy if they didn't make another one and let it stand alone as a benchmark in film. Besides, it's been a long time now since it's release. Expectations change, along with the world of cinema. I'm not sure it would be a success on the level of the first film, unless James Cameron has another masterstroke of technological genius tucked away for it...
As for losing its place at the top of the gross charts, that's not exactly worth mentioning these days. Endgame is the culmination of over 20 stories, over more than 10 years, with a dedicated fanbase that will probably have watched it several times each. Quite good business by Disney, but nothing more than that.
And besides, when adjusted for inflation, it's still a long way off Avatar, and a very long way off Gone With The Wind. Although the Marvel lot won't acknowledge that, they're a sensitive bunch...
