I am writing my fan fiction story for one of my favorite video games to play (Telltale the walking dead) as one of the main character's favorite books and film series is Lord of the Rings as he reads it to his love interest adoptive son of the greatest story ever told to mankind. It is so cute, and yes this is the best trilogy that is ever made and still one of my favorites.

I remember watching this trailer 30 times, and being moved to tears over and over. It was just so overwhelming. It still brings tears to my eyes 20 years later. I've seen the movie maybe 30 times since, and the trailer still hits just as hard as once it did.
I remember when it was first released. I was 11, and my family didn't have the best computer, and I remember waiting probably 1-2 hours waiting for a 3 minute video to download, and my word was it worth the wait.
Im born in 93 so I was 10 years old when I saw Return of the King in the cinema. To this day it is, without a doubt, the greatest movie experience in my life. My mom didnt let me see Two Towers (Cant remember when Fellowship was shown) , but I saw them both on DVD maybe 20 times before RotK came, so the hype was real. Im so glad i convinced my mom to let me go since it is one of my greatest childhood memories( even though the scene with Shelob scared the shit outta me :D)
I remember when fellowship came out I was 8. My dad went to see it but said i couldn't so when the dvd came out he let me watch it with him. And then we went to see 2 and 3 together
This movie is a masterpiece, all of them are. The ending to this is so beautiful and emotional and makes me cry so hard. And the music in these movies is so good and perfect 😭
my father bought me a dvd of the "fellowship of the ring", we were watching it together. he passed away in 2003 and has never finished the trilogy. when i am watching these beautiful, soulful movies i always invite him to watch them with me and we both cry sometimes, touched by the mere beauty of this masterpiece!
The people that made this trailer deserved an Oscar. It perfectly summarises the incredible epic scope, the action, the story, the characters, the stakes, the life morals, the sense of importance this film trilogy represents in cinematic history, the overwhelming emotional pathos of its final chapter - it’s all so movingly told in 3 minutes. They chose the perfect final line which summarises the soul of this trilogy: “We cannot achieve victory through strength of arms… not for ourselves… but we can give Frodo a chance…” Perfection!
Dude I know, I still remember sitting in my 6th grade homeroom class on December 17th 2003, feeling pumped that the big day was here... now I'm a senior in college and I can still recall that feeling of excitement so vividly.
Thats a heck of a time away! lol. I never saw them in theaters but I have seen them a bazillion times both standard and extended editions . There will not be a trilogy that rivals this for a long while.
I agree. Its a VERY tough thing to do what Peter Jackson, his cast, and Weta Studios did, and no one will be able to make a trilogy as good for a while. If you want to think young adults, then if The Hunger Games was still a planned trilogy, and not a quadrilogy, then it would be up there. I dont know about you but I really enjoy HGs.
My dad is the type to talk over and criticize movies, or fall asleep in the theaters. These were the only movies he'd ever get excited for, and actually respect and really enjoy. He brought me and my brothers to all of them in the theaters and they were big holidays for us (day released in theater and day released on dvd). He now criticizes movies by comparing them to these to this day. Powerful stuff we got here.
These movies will never become old, the CGI is not very much in these movies, and the CGI there is, is very good. These movies will live for MANY years. They are perfect.
***** Should have been "compared to The hobbit". So yes, not very much CGI when you look at it that way. Movies these days are filled with CGI untill they can't fit anymore. The orcs, goblins, all look realistic in the LOTR trilogy compared to the orcs, goblins in the Hobbit. That's why LOTR will live longer then "the Hobbit". :-)
Guard655 LotR will live longer than The Hobbit because it's LotR. Anyway, for a big LotR fan, The Hobbit will never die too, because it's still Middle Earth. Overall, ofc it's weaker than LotR. You can't expect The Hobbit to beat LotR. In fact, nothing can beat LotR lol, but still there are many epic and some heartwarming scenes that can be re-watched over and over again.
True exactly what i thought, CGI will improve and the hobbit may one day look dated, but the lord of the rings was shot perfectly and had suspense and realism because of it. an example is the balrog in the fellowship vs smaug in the hobbit, the clever way they hardly showed the balrog and engulfed it in flames created far more suspense and made the scene really realistic. Nothing will ever beat The Lord Of The Rings in my opinion :)
This is a masterpiece of our lives. One of the true wonders of the world. I have yet to see a movie be given this level of dedication since. The costumes, the pacing, the coordination of the people, parades and action. And especially the speeches. I can't tell you what it was like to see these for the first time in the theater, before most knew what it really was. What it was like when movies lived up to the hype, and blew you away.
@@fellownerd1138 It was. I will never forget it. The journey there, the walk out, and the general sese of the city around me afterwards is blurry. I was so lost in first the hype, and then the wonder after walking out. Back then everyone was dead quiet in the theatre's too. I had seen too little to fully appreciate just how great we had it, now that I think about it. Best years of my life, no contest.
@@Nyarlathotep_Flagg i agree, some of the best years of life during lotr days, and i had no idea then it would be the best movie i would see up to this point
Aye this trailer is pure childhood nostalgia, I still remember the day it was released, no visit to the cinema has ever topped Christmas 2001, 2002 and 2003 when these films came out and I was aged 9 to 11, we are all lucky to be alive and to have seen these works of art :)
Watched the trailer for RoP and immediately had to return to this master piece to wash my eyes out. There will never be anything remotely close to this epic trilogy
Andreas Kunz this trailer is amazing tbh. it has such a rhythm to it. nothing will ever come close to these beauties. they'll be back in theaters yet again after covid.
The LOTR and The Hobbit series are the only movies that make me wish I had amnesia. These are the movies that make you wish you could forget only to watch it over again and again and again.
I was lucky enough to see all three movies in the theater, and seeing this epic story come to life on the big screen was an awesome experience! Theaters should have a 20 year anniversary and show the whole trilogy again!
No matter how much technology will progress ,no matter if the best actors all been put together in one movie , no matter if I'm 100 years old and witnessed everything ...Nothing will ever compete this trilogy . EVER.
Absolutely The Lord Of The Rings The Return Of The King has won 11 Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director and they tied with most awards won by single film tie with Ben-Hur and Titanic
@@eugeniapatron2693 Let's face it, back when this trilogy was made, the Academy Awards were still a huge, important thing. It's been many a year since I last time even bothered to check which movies got the Oscars, let alone watch the broadcast. And I'm not the only one with that sentiment. Back when Return of the King scored that victory, 43M Americans were watching the show. For the past few years, the viewership hasn't reached even 30M, and this year it was mere 10M. This year might have been a temporary, particularly bad slump for various reasons, but I doubt the event will ever again reach the significance it once had, unless it manages to totally revamp itself.
I remember when the movie came out. I was so excited and couldnt wait to see it. I was sure though I wouldnt see it on opening day. That day, after I got home from school, I relaxed at home for a bit but then mom and dad said they were going to see a movie and told me to come along. I knew though it wouldnt be Return of the King since they never saw the other movies. But when we got to the theatre and got our tickets they said the movie and I just jumped up and down in excitement. We had to wait in line for an hour and a half in front of the theatre. The people coming out from the previous showing were cheering and I knew it would be good. 3 and a half hours later, I came out with a huge smile on my face and almost crying. I still watch the films to this day. :)
I was recently off work sick and decided to watch the LOTR trilogy. It brought back so many amazing memories. I remember my dad taking me to see FOTR when I was in grade 6 and it was amazing. I saw ROTK five times in theatres and each time I saw it I fell more in love with it. This trilogy, these movies will always be my number one favourite until the day I die. Nothing will ever compare to these movies. Bless you Peter Jackson on creating a masterpiece of a trilogy!
@@felipeherrera6507 Mmmm sorry but yeah even the last film not being great doesn't take away from the two greatest films to ever exist Godfather p1 and p2
I just finished the three lord of the rings movies for the first time (I’m 25 so I can’t believe I haven’t seen them before) and WOW now this is coming from me watching them for the first time so late, and they were SO SO GOOD. I love Frodo’s and Sam’s friendship so much. Sam is an amazing friend. And the hug Frodo gives Sam at the very end before he left made me cry so hard. Absolutely fantastic movies and I’m glad I was able to watch them for the first time because I’m sure fans wish they can watch them for the first time again. Some of the best movies I have ever seen wow 😭 And the music is beautiful and emotional 😭
If you’re not a big reader the books may be intimidating, but they add so many incredible details about Middle Earth and it’s characters. I’d definitely recommend giving them a try.
Sons of Gondor, of Rohan, my brothers...I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me. A day may come when the courage of men fails, when we forsake our friends and break all bonds of fellowship, but it is not this day. An hour of wolves and shattered shields, when the age of men comes crashing down, but it is not this day! this day we fight!! By all that you hold dear on this good Earth, I bid you stand, Men of the West!!!
One thing I didn't like was that the speech tone used in the movie is different than the trailer. This sounds more courageous, more exciting. In the movie is so flat. Does anybody noticed this?
***** I can see arguments for both being the best, although FOTR is mine, as I slightly prefer the more personal, small scale perspective of the film to the huge, epic scale of ROTK. By like 0.1/10 lol, that's the difference in quality between the two imo.
That moment when you've watched the movie so many times that you know which scenes from the trailer didn't make it into the actual film simply because you don't recognize them, or that Aragorn's speech in this is a different take than the one in the finished product because the inflections are different :)
I have heard that theres gonna be a new Batman trilogy directed by a man called ¨Christopher Nolan¨. I think its gonna be terrible!!! Lets wait and see
***** I call it the Lucas Syndrome. Over-reliance on CG bombast, and less emphasis on characters, story and structure. Hence when the CG effects get boring and routine, you more easily notice the lack of the latter. Just like the original Star Wars Trilogy had practical effects that SUPPORTED the story and the prequel trilogy did not. Same goes for PJ and LOTR. The ending of DOS made me so furious. It was akin to ending The Two Towers just as the Urak-Hai begin the charge on Helm's Deep, and Theodin's line, "so it begins." Bad filmmaking should not be rewarded by seeing the "next chapter."
It's been 13 years and this trailer still gives me goosebumps. Never again will we see a trilogy so amazing and everlasting. Kudos Peter Jackson, you are my hero
Over a decade later, and just the trailer can still give me chills. An amazing conclusion to an amazing trilogy. I hope Peter Jackson can look back on these films and what made them great, and look on to The Hobbit films now and what people don't like about them and learn a valuable lesson from it all.
I agree that this has to be the greatest movie trailer of all time. I still get sucked in with this one. However I have seen a doc about the hobbit that explains a bit of why it didn't hit the mark as the LOTR trilogy did. LOTR they had YEARS of preproduction and prep done on it. whereas the hobbit only had months. A lot of the work that Guillermo del Toro had done when he was working on it had to be reworked only months ahead of production. So by the time they got to the last one, they were winging it too much. that and I don't think they should have split Hobbit into 3 films.
Nearly 20 years later and I still feel blown away as I did when I saw this in the theaters as a kid. There will never be another series like this ever again.
I saw this movie 11 times in the theater during its original run. That's once a week for almost three months. I can't imagine doing that today, with ticket prices as they are. And frankly, there hasn't been a movie since that I've HAD to see it again like I did with Return of the King.
I was 13 years old when my uncle told me they were filming LOTR, so he gave me the books and I read them, then I got hooked.. Then, a few months later the premiere was in school week at night and my mum was awesome because she let us go to the premiere at 00:00 to watch the movie. It was phenomenal! I got back home around 4:30 and still got to go to school but It was worth it. After that It became a family tradition to go that late at night. I will never forget being thrilled watching the helm's deep battle in theaters with all the fans clapping and laughing together, it was an epic experience, now is really hard to go to cinemas and experience the same thing with everyone. I will never forget the incredible experience of watching LOTR, I'm glad I was mature enough to go to the cinemas and appreciate this movies. I will always be grateful to Tolkien and Peter Jackson. I know the hobbit aren't as great as the LOTR, but the excitement of the fans in the theaters is whats makes me go each year, and this movies still give me a little taste of LOTR, so I will always welcome that ^^. Now I hope Peter picks The Silmarillion, some of its chapters will become awesome movies!!
I think is a little extreme to wait for him to die. Even if that happens, because of intellectual property you can't do something about somebody works at least until 50 years of his dead has past (that I heard but I could be wrong). So probably I will die of old age before I see the sirmarillion :S.
+Maria Pinochet You're so lucky. I was born in 1996 and so I was 5 years old when the first movie came out in theaters. Too young to understand everything that wasn't a cartoon or a comedy film. After having bought "The Hobbit" videogame (the one of 2003) I started being curious about Tolkien's works and that curiosity became love for The Hobbit and LOTR books. I enjoyed The Hobbit movies but I wish I had enough age to see LOTR movies in the same way :')
God, I must have watched this trailer about a hundred times as a kid. We'd only just got broadband at the start of 2003 and I spent all my time on the family computer browsing the LotR forums and watching the trailer again and again. It was only twenty years ago but it really does feel like a lifetime. The trailer, however, is as good today as it was when it first came out. The Lord of the Rings trilogy is truly timeless.
It sounds so funny to think back to when these movies came out in theatres. When I say the Hype was EVERYWHERE. You literally couldn't not see it. For 3 years it was the height of almost everybody's year. The experience will probably never be matched honestly. I mean when theatres let out after ROTK, the atmosphere was like how it probably felt in Gondor during Aragorns coronation. Strangers were hugging each other (*I'm dead serious), grown Men wept without shame, it was amazing. Honestly probably one of the closest times we ever came to World Peace 😅
I remember seeing this film at the cinema when I was 9. After all these years it's one film that still gives me chills, even though I've seen it countless times after on VHS, DVD and now Blu-Ray. Following the trilogy over three years, from 2001-2003, felt like a journey in itself, I will never forget the clash of feelings I felt when the credits first began to roll. Thank you Tolkien, and Peter Jackson, for making a timeless masterpiece.
Johnathan Shelton Although, some scene's (at least in the extended versions) I cringe for. They could have spent a bit more time on the final polish/editing for these films. But all together an ambitious and great production of one of the most well written and renowned trilogies in contemporary English fantasy. RIP JRR Tolkien.
The one thing that disappoints me is that Sean Astin didn’t get a Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He was the heart of the trilogy while Elijah is the soul of the trilogy.
The most epic film series ever made. Can't believe it's been 20 years since the Fellowship of the Ring came out 😢 I was 11 at the time and the film completely blew me away.
Alexdz Cp I used to love the dark knight but getting older I've started to prefer LOTR. The idea of a man dressing up like a bat and going against a man wearing make up begins to feel inferior against the story of a group of people setting off on a long journey to destroy an ancient evil that threatens the entire world. Idk something tells me I'll stull be watching these movies when I'm 70
Gandalf i agree.i just rewatched RotK and i can't make up my mind whether its better than tdk or not.both movies are my all-time favorites and that wont change as long as im alive. But i DO preferer the lotr over tdk as a triology.but consider this in your calculations-the idea of tdk is not a man dressed into a bat going against a regular lunatic with a bunch of make up.its something much depper-The silent guardier going up against one of the greatest comicbook villains ever portrayed by Heath Ledgers awesome performance into somebody who is not only unbelievably mad,but also a FRICKIN GENIUS.all trough an awesome storyiline and greates scenes.thank you for stating your opinion and taking time to read this comment.
I was 13 years old, sitting at a computer with a dialup connection waiting nearly 20 minutes for this trailer to load into a small, extremely compressed video window. Memories, man.
It was one of the rare occasions that I went to see it alone. Reason was that I waited for the rush to be over so I could watch it at the best seat in the house.
Well I liked HP too but LotR was way better accomplished. The 3rd one though (Prisoner of Azkaban) was a really good one, and the first soundtrack by John Williams was also insane. If John Williams and whoever directed the 3rd would've made all of the HP series I bet it would come pretty close!
HP was too inconsistent and had many flaws. Seriously how much plot convenience do you need?! especially in the second book/film. And why is it that nobody EVER believes Harry is telling the truth? First he warns about someone trying to steal the Philosopher's stone, then claims he is not the heir of slytherin and not petrifying people, then claims Sirius Black is innocent, then claims he didnt put his name in the Goblet of fire, then claims Voldemort is back, and STILL NOBODY THINKS HE IS TELLING THE TRUTH?! JESUS!
And it didn't have much of a "Universal Appeal," like I watched the first HP when I was 21 (a yr ago) and it didn't seem all that great. The only reason I kept going was because the last 2 films seemed good. The LOTR Trilogy, however appeals to ALL audiences.
Here in 2022, and this still is the best trilogy. This film deserved all of its awards it was nominated for. Epic epic film.
The only way to feel it again is next gen game trilogy

The people that made this trailer deserved an Oscar. It perfectly summarises the incredible epic scope, the action, the story, the characters, the stakes, the life morals, the sense of importance this film trilogy represents in cinematic history, the overwhelming emotional pathos of its final chapter - it’s all so movingly told in 3 minutes.
They chose the perfect final line which summarises the soul of this trilogy:
“We cannot achieve victory through strength of arms… not for ourselves… but we can give Frodo a chance…”
Perfection!
This cinematic masterpiece, unrivaled, will be ten years old in 15 days....DANG
Dude I know, I still remember sitting in my 6th grade homeroom class on December 17th 2003, feeling pumped that the big day was here... now I'm a senior in college and I can still recall that feeling of excitement so vividly.
Thats a heck of a time away! lol. I never saw them in theaters but I have seen them a bazillion times both standard and extended editions . There will not be a trilogy that rivals this for a long while.
The only decent trilogy post LOTR was the batman Trilogy.
HD Simplicityy 15 years now
My dad is the type to talk over and criticize movies, or fall asleep in the theaters. These were the only movies he'd ever get excited for, and actually respect and really enjoy. He brought me and my brothers to all of them in the theaters and they were big holidays for us (day released in theater and day released on dvd). He now criticizes movies by comparing them to these to this day. Powerful stuff we got here.
Happy Birthday to Return of the King, who turns 20 years old today!
***** No.
***** i hope so
This is a masterpiece of our lives.
I wish I was alive when it came out in theaters lol would’ve been awesome to see
@@fellownerd1138 It was.

@@Salesiable It's a record. I hope that record would be repeteaded.

That moment when you've watched the movie so many times that you know which scenes from the trailer didn't make it into the actual film simply because you don't recognize them, or that Aragorn's speech in this is a different take than the one in the finished product because the inflections are different :)

Cryer24597 I totally agree. WETA had done an amazing job with all the props in LOTR.
The one good thing the Amazon series is doing is getting me back to watching all of these again.

Need to see this after the new Rings of Power Trailer..
+Stephen64138 Or more like the Hobbit was 300 page children's book and the Lord of the Rings was 3 longer books made for adults.
Tired of the Hobbit film bashing. There are way worse movies out there
John Smith I agree, they're not terrible but certainly missed a mark that LOTR hit on the dot. I genuinely enjoyed the last one.
Allan Costa it was always going to be hard though since The Hobbit was always a lesser book than LOTR
A lot of the work that Guillermo del Toro
had done when he was working on it had to be reworked only months ahead of production. So by the time they got to the last one, they were winging it too much.
that and I don't think they should have split Hobbit into 3 films.
I was so moved by seeing this movie with my Dad on release date that I recited Gandalf's 'White Shores' when I spoke at my Dad's funeral in 2016
Nearly 20 years later and I still feel blown away as I did when I saw this in the theaters as a kid. There will never be another series like this ever again.
I saw this movie 11 times in the theater during its original run. That's once a week for almost three months. I can't imagine doing that today, with ticket prices as they are. And frankly, there hasn't been a movie since that I've HAD to see it again like I did with Return of the King.
Holy crap. I saw it the same number of times in the theater too. I'm not kidding lol
I was 13 times at the theater for RotK, 17 times for TT and 15 times for LotR. But I admire you good Sir / Lady ;)
20 FotR, 11 TT, 16 RotK, including special events. I still have the ticket stubs.
"Not for ourselves, but we can give Frodo a chance" Aragorn was ready to make the ultimate sacrifice to defeat Sauron.
Although I agree with everything you've said, he unfortunately will never get the rights to the Silmarillion.
HPfrk321 never say never. there is still a chance for that
If christopher Tolkien dies what happens to the rights?

The new series is woke trash. The LOTR trilogy is a movie experience. Only agenda it has is to tell an amazing story.
The one thing that disappoints me is that Sean Astin didn’t get a Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
He was the heart of the trilogy while Elijah is the soul of the trilogy.

Alexdz Cp I used to love the dark knight but getting older I've started to prefer LOTR. It is 2020 and LOTR is still the best movie trilogy of all time!
Sorry guys but this trilogy was FAR more superior to Harry Potter's 8 films...
FAN DEBATE!!!!
Well I liked HP too but LotR was way better accomplished. The 3rd one though (Prisoner of Azkaban) was a really good one, and the first soundtrack by John Williams was also insane. If John Williams and whoever directed the 3rd would've made all of the HP series I bet it would come pretty close!
sebaba001 Alfonso Cuarón directed the third Harry Potter film. He also had recently directed Gravity.
Guys Guys Guys..... Why not have both :)
