Christopher Lee was such a Tolkien fan, he was livid when he found out Saruman was killed off right at the start of Return of the King and almost walked out on filming
In regards to Sean Bean and the helicopter. He did get in to it on the first day. Unfortunately for him, Dominic and Billy had told the pilot to show Sean what he could do leading to one crazy trip which made Bean so scared he preferred to get up five hours earlier and hike up in full gear.
Not only to get to NZ in the first place but his line of work makes me wonder how much he struggles with this. Or was it simply an excuse to get a hike in while getting into character or something...

Instead of putting Tom B in the film Jackson became Tom Bombadil. Of all the changes made from book to screen I am very happy with the product. Regarding point 3 with the 250 horses, did you know that it was Bernard Hill (Theoden) who suggested to ride along the lances with his sword gracing them?
I’ve been a lifelong cinephile, loving films of every genre, era and description. If one includes degree of difficulty in the equation, there is simply no denying that LOTR is the greatest achievement in the history of cinema and is unlikely ever to be eclipsed. Even if degree of difficulty is excluded, a very strong case can be made for its superiority to any other film that is considered great.
I think everyone has heard how Viggo broke his toes. You forgot to mention how Sean Astin put a glass shard through his hobbit foot, which came out the top of his real foot. Plus the scene with Viggo in the water, he was pulled under by the current and pinned there. The Safety Dive team couldn't find him, and just as he was out of breath...the current released him.
I knew all of these facts, mainly because I’ve watched the appendices to death and love them but nice to see them on here as well from someone who loves the franchise as well
I wanted to say that too. You typically obscure the actors behind an object like a pillar or something for a brief moment for the switch. Just using the picture frame here was done masterfully. The most important thing is that both actors maintain a very similar direction and speed in their motion and the viewer can’t even notice it.
48/50! Fact #7 is partially incorrect. Gandalf's pipe staff is taken by Saruman when he's captured in Isenguard. If PJ had included the fight between Aragorn and Sauron at the black gate in the film, he would have only spit on the books even more! He has enough of that already!
I remember the scene Pippin screaming when horse went stomping him , his hands not tied with a rope , then he crawled out with his hands tied with a rope 🤣🤣
Viggo broke his toe on the third take because his scream wasn't believable enough, but the real pain caused a real scream. The riders who broke from the charge at pelennor fields were people who had actually read the books and so Peter Jackson told those rider to break ranks and charge.
I had the privilege of touring the META studio in Wellington and getting a tour. These actors worked six days a week straight for two years. All three movies were completed at once.
Thanks so much for this... I knew more than half of them, from 'The Making of...' series, but still there were some interesting new facts... I'm glad that none of the other considered actors were chosen - this was so perfect. Including that Sean Connery (alias the first James Bond) was offered Gandalf's role and an exorbitant amount of money, but declined, because 'he couldn't make sense of the story' - so glad about that! Billy and Dominic (who played Pippin and Merry) met on the plane down to New Zealand, and 'recognized' each other immediately, without having been introduced. Christopher Lee was convinced that he would be the perfect Gandalf... Peter talked him out of it and into playing Saruman instead. Peter Jackson of course lapped up the main recognition for the film script and execution, but after all I've seen, I respect so highly also Philippa Boyens and Peter's wife Fran Drescher - they all worked on the script and its execution permanently. Peter did have the authority as the director to have the final word, when it was needed... my favourite movie of all times was for over 30 years Kubrick's '2001 - Space Odyssey'... ...until LotR appeared.
The movie Simi Tuff was shot in cowboys stadium for the on field shots. I was living there at time and unemployed. The ad said free food. that was all I needed. The weather was not good and only about 600 ppl showed. So what they thought would be a quick morning shot feed them lunch and send them home to all day and into the night. I got feed three times that day . They had us moving all over the place for dif shots. We walked a good 5 miles that day. Easy for me but for some it got hard and they would just sit for a while and then join back in. That was a fun day and my first and last movie ever to be in. I live putting it up on my 76" zooning on he crowds and showing where I am in all the stands scenes
The thing about LOTR boosting tourism in NZ is definitely true. When my wife & I had just gotten engaged, we took a vacation to NZ, for the sole reason of how beautiful it looked in the movies, and wanting to see it for ourselves. We aren't particularly hardcore fans of the Tolkien or the the LOTR movies and story world universe..although we have both read the books (many years ago) and really enjoy the moviè..we just love traveling and visiting beautiful places, and doing things like hiking, camping, hunting, and exploring the wilderness in those beautiful places, like NZ. And i swear, NZ is definitely has some of the most beautiful places in the world that you could ever lay eyes on.
Andy Serkis did tell the story of how he came up with the story how he came up with Gollum's voice in the behind the scene doucmentary The Taming of Sméagol on the Two Towers Appendices DVD.
I just saw it today. I hope one day they will release all the cut scenes. Especially from the battle of the last alliance , and Aragorn fighthing Sauron. I knew 42😊 but I love the behind the scesnes almost as much as the trilogy. And since rings of power even the cringe scenes and the CGI in the Hobbit movies seem forgivable. At least it all feels like middle eart and the character who are Tolkien characters are not ruined. Btw. As much as I love Legolas, I also adore Thranduil, especially when he fights. His comstumes and sword are gorgeous and he looks totally royal
I knew 45 of these. Cinderblock Balrog, visible Arwen in Helms Deep, fan favourite elf, Tolkien grandson and Real actor dead Saruman were new. Great stuff, Thanks.
I loved the video! Here is just something you can use another time maybe. InTwo Towers, after Gimlis line "No Sign Of Our Quarry But What Bare Rock Can Tell" when the 3 are running on the hill after the Uruk Hai, you can see a part of Gimli's armor fall off. (Well, I think it's an armor (leg) piece.) 😊
Another reason Stuart Townsend was fired, was his terrible attitude, and work ethic. When other cast members wanted to rehearse, or practice fight choreography, he would always respond negatively, with, “You’ll get it on the day.” It got so disheartening, that Ian McKellan actually took Townsend aside, and asked him if he even wanted to be there. Peter Jackson was just being diplomatic when he said Townsend was let go for being too young.
Sean Bean DID go in a helicopter once and it was up in Caradras scene where he picks up The Ring after Frodo drops it in the snow. He was so afraid when he rode the hlicopter that he struggled NOT to think about it for the rest of the day, which Viggo noticed and asked about it.
There was just two reshoots, not three. They filmed The Grey Havens once, then they reshot because of the vest mishap and then they had to do it a third time because of blur that happened because of a camera mishap (not because of the mistake of a focus puller as stated in the ddirector and writers commenray).
You missed in the first movie at the end Sam runs to stop frodo but he stepped on a large piece of glass and had to go go hospital because it was too much for the crews medics to handle. Great show and one or two new to my fan boy self !
Fran Walsh had a cold the day they recorded her scream so it was a lot gravel in her voice, which made her scream come of as weird according to her. The result was that Fran destroyed her voice after she did her recoding of her scream. Like Peter Jackson says "Pain is temporary, film is forever.".
20:38 except all Deleted scenes are there in extended versions, what are a lot better because then u dont miss actually any important cutscenes. I also do have those shorter versions from both films.
this was good i learned a few new things but you could of including the scene where Sam steps on glass and went through his foot when he is on the ramp trying to swim to Frodo`s canoe
I very much believe Sean bean probably didn’t ever step foot in a helicopter, man’s happy to take a hike after filming the sharpe series where they had to hike in full 95th rifle gear from the 1800s they did so much work in the Spanish hills along with other mountain areas during freezing winters
If they had gone through with killing one of the hobbits, or they had to bend the knee for the Weinsteins, I can guarantee the LOTR series would not have gone down as well. Members of Tolken’s family already hated it, they would’ve disowned it if they killed the hobbit
I didn't know or at least i couldn't remember 5, 8, 20, 28, 33, 34, 47, 48 and 49 I am bad with numbers, so i didn't know the exact numbers for 3 (but knew it where a lot and the number in the books and movie), 9 (but knew there where multiple in all kinds of sizes) and 12 (but knew it was shortly after and very early in his career) So i only really completely knew 38/50 and my favorite trivia i learned by far was 33 :D (Viggo Mortensen throwing apples at Billy Boyd 😂) You really got me with number 50 😅 Whole LotR love ♥️
Gandalf actually would have lost his pipe to Saruman after losing his fight in Orthanc. He has a different staff in Rivendell and on the journey. I know this because I had to choose which staff to spent a crap ton for a replica of and went with the “Moria” staff. Hope Saruman got good use of the pipe with all the pipe weed he had stored up
The loss of his pipe explains why Gandalf went berserker mode on the balrog. Poor thing never had a chance. He's lucky they fell though. Had he not, he would have faced something so terrifying it wasn't even named in the movie. P.E.T.A. "0_o"
2:18 yeah but the point peter jackson was trying to make in the movie is that sauron cant appear physically without the ring because he poured in so much of himself into it

Imagine David Bowie with his eyes, he looks bad ass as Elrond.
Honestly, I can see him as Elrond!
I really like the act by the Wormtongue actor, always felt he is kind of special.
And i swear, NZ is definitely has some of the most beautiful places in the world that you could ever lay eyes on.
my like makes it from 7.4k to 7.5k 😍
this video was so good your videos give me something to look forward to every day. I really appreciate it
This took so much work. Thank you! I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Thank you! ☺️ Gathering all the facts, writing the script and editing such a long video is no easy feat.
3:31 "look carefully the next time you watch it" this guy knows his audience😂 we rewatch these films constantly
This video was so amazing! Great job on the editing. The ending made me lol 😆
The last broke his toe one something went whack and I think we miss the toe and another one
Andy Serkis did tell the story of how he came up with the story how he came up with Gollum's voice in the behind the scene doucmentary The Taming of Sméagol on the Two Towers Appendices DVD.
You’re right 😉
I NEED a playlist with all your videos in one
I just saw it today. I hope one day they will release all the cut scenes. Especially from the battle of the last alliance , and Aragorn fighthing Sauron. I knew 42😊 but I love the behind the scesnes almost as much as the trilogy. And since rings of power even the cringe scenes and the CGI in the Hobbit movies seem forgivable. At least it all feels like middle eart and the character who are Tolkien characters are not ruined. Btw. As much as I love Legolas, I also adore Thranduil, especially when he fights. His comstumes and sword are gorgeous and he looks totally royal
42? Oh, that's not bad for a pointy-eared elvish princeling. I myself am sitting pretty on 43... 😉
This sleep mask thing is something i didn't know i needed
They actually used 500 of the New Zealand army soldiers and fought scenes with real swords and shields. Real enactments, great stuff 💪🏻
I knew 45 of these. Cinderblock Balrog, visible Arwen in Helms Deep, fan favourite elf, Tolkien grandson and Real actor dead Saruman were new. Great stuff, Thanks.
Impressive, glad to hear that you learned a few at least :)
The scenery, the music, the costumes, the photography were all excellent. What Jackson did to the story was an insult to literature.
Great video. I knew 16 of these before the video and it’s always fun to see more behind the scenes information. Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks! I didn’t know that, thank you for pointing it out! ☺️
I saw that big ring scene at walmart. Forgot all about it, when malls were full of stores, stores full of customers
This was great! I knew most of them, except Arwen at Helms Deep, Éomer’s sword falling and we got lucky when we got Vigo instead of Nicholas Cage!🤮
I also do have those shorter versions from both films.
hahaha i was about to write the "did u know aragorn really deflected the knife" fact as a joke and he beat me to it as the first one!
Hey dude glad to see you making Middle Earth content now! It's much less of a dead horse to beat compared to Star Wars Battlefront lmao
Boromir climbing up all that mountain hours before is crazy o.O
14:27 I never really put a lot of thinking into it but it’s such a great shot of chucky
Is is! It really adds to the scene.
24/50 almost half. It's only because of this channels shorts that I knew so many 😄
Haha glad to hear you've learned a lot from our shorts!
gollums voice came from Tolkien himself reading the hobbit. the record is rare but its out there. so Andy is just doing a damn good impersonation
this was good i learned a few new things but you could of including the scene where Sam steps on glass and went through his foot when he is on the ramp trying to swim to Frodo`s canoe
What are the odds of being recommended this channel of all channels 🤣
Hope your having a great week Elliot 😁👍
I very much believe Sean bean probably didn’t ever step foot in a helicopter, man’s happy to take a hike after filming the sharpe series where they had to hike in full 95th rifle gear from the 1800s they did so much work in the Spanish hills along with other mountain areas during freezing winters
Wow! I was surprised to learn Brad Dourif played Grima Wormtongue. He Also played Dan Douherty in Deadwood.!
Didn't Viggo buy Bill The Pony too?
Yes I believe that’s true. There is also a funny photography of the two eating breakfast together. 😂
Such a magnificent vid❣️
If they had gone through with killing one of the hobbits, or they had to bend the knee for the Weinsteins, I can guarantee the LOTR series would not have gone down as well. Members of Tolken’s family already hated it, they would’ve disowned it if they killed the hobbit
They hated it? Why? These films are incredible.
The Troll which Aragon fight at the end is the Troll from Arnor who was loyal and a leader from the Witchking of Angmar.
I am surprised you didn't mention when Sean Austin runs out into the water chasing after Frodo, he stepped on glass and cut his foot open.
Quite some new interesting details to learn. Never saw Eomers sword dropping altough I watched the movies countless times. My score is 29/50.
I didn't know or at least i couldn't remember 5, 8, 20, 28, 33, 34, 47, 48 and 49
I am bad with numbers, so i didn't know the exact numbers for 3 (but knew it where a lot and the number in the books and movie), 9 (but knew there where multiple in all kinds of sizes) and 12 (but knew it was shortly after and very early in his career)
So i only really completely knew 38/50 and my favorite trivia i learned by far was 33 :D (Viggo Mortensen throwing apples at Billy Boyd 😂)
You really got me with number 50 😅
Whole LotR love ♥️
I did learn some of these that I didn't know. Thanks for the video, you got a big ole laugh out of me at the end lol.
Glad you enjoyed!
Gandalf actually would have lost his pipe to Saruman after losing his fight in Orthanc. He has a different staff in Rivendell and on the journey. I know this because I had to choose which staff to spent a crap ton for a replica of and went with the “Moria” staff. Hope Saruman got good use of the pipe with all the pipe weed he had stored up
Gandolf, Saruman, and the Balrog are the same type of entity. Both are Maia or...Wizards.
That was a really interesting video. I was totally captivated by it.
50 things you learn from watching the extras on the extended dvds.
Okay.. being honest: I did not know 15, 28, 38, and 45. 46/50. I feel that’s about standard for a LOTR fan
Well done!
The loss of his pipe explains why Gandalf went berserker mode on the balrog.
Poor thing never had a chance. He's lucky they fell though. Had he not, he would have
faced something so terrifying it wasn't even named in the movie. P.E.T.A. "0_o"
2:18 yeah but the point peter jackson was trying to make in the movie is that sauron cant appear physically without the ring because he poured in so much of himself into it
I was watching most of the video thinking about fact 50. Got the video a like!
