- This by far has been my coziest project yet! New essentials for a cloudy day: a cup of tea, a good book, and a QUILT COAT. This also turned out to be quite an easy project, so if you're a beginner, I'd definitely recommend trying this out! Remember to tag #sewwithemily on IG if you do!

Are you going to quilt it or tie it? When you wash them, the batting will fall apart if they aren’t quilted together. You can do it by machine or by hand. But you need to quilt it every few inches. I’ve seen some batting that said 10”, but I would do it every 4-6”. Just a bit of advice from an old quilter. Super cute coats!
Exactly what i was thinking 🙂
Like the colors on second one. Both great.
I need both!
I’m not sure of the logistics of it, but I’d have been tempted to make a reversible jacket from the large one
Haven’t finished the video yet, but all those quilts for $15 😲!!! Couldn’t touch one in a thrift store for that price where I’m at. Great haul, sooo many possibilities! 😍
Exactly what I thought. Where in the world did she find them?!
Love the idea, and both jackets. Second on is my favorite. Suggestion for the future: if you want to take apart a quilt, wash it first. Washing raw edge seams of an older quilt could lead to some of the seams coming apart. This is much less likely if is still together in the form of a quilt, rather than the two pieced sides without batting. Great project. Great job! Thank you for the video.
I love the black trim on the 2nd coat, but I love the length on the first one. Aww heck, they're both splendid! 🤩
Your coats are absolutely lovely. But as a quilter I thought you should know that you will not be able to wash or dry clean your coats. The batting will separate and shift and ball between the layers. You need to stabilize the batting by one of 2 methods. The little ties or sewing through all three layers. If you don't you might find over time the batting will stretch and distort. Especially if left on a hanger. Just thought you might want to know for future designs.
Yes, secure those layers together. The batting you purchased should have instructions as to how closely together the batting must be stitched/tied. Beautiful coat, great design, enjoyable video! I liked the second one best because of the black binding. It really anchors the many colors of the quilt and outlines the wonderful design.
I cannot believe you found all those quilts for so little! Quilts can take hundreds of hours to create and even now with them coming back in style for various uses it’s wild that you can just find them in a thrift store. We still (as a society) undervalue craftsmanship so much. Also I hope you were able to throw them in the wash before you laid them on your bed to film because I got really stressed about bed bugs for you from that packed thrift store! These are so beautiful and it seems you could get another whole jacket out of what’s left. Oh, one question! Which quilting foot did you use?
I find quilts for $2.50 at a textile waste warehouse. If they are antique or in good condition I try and resell it as is, but if they are not antique or anything special ( some are machine made or mass produced) and they are damaged I will use them for crafting.
@@RoxieRHeartWhere are these shops? I've never heard of textile waste thrift shops, which state in USA?
@@RoxieRHeartThat's wonderful but where do you find a place like that. Never heard of them.
Both are adorable! So creative and may have to give one a try. Now to hunt for an old quilt.
Woah that second one is amazing! Love it with your whole outfit!
Ohhhh they both turned out so lovely!! They both have their own look/personality and I'm quite glad you were able to show us!
Make more videos. I love them. I am a quilter and the fabric from that quilt is 30's prints. They were flour sac reproductions. I got a chuckle with you mentioning Lancaster PA. It is where my friends and I travel and shop at the Amish quilting stores. So Fun. They pronounce it weird. It is almost like you don't here the A vowels.
Beautiful job! It's almost summer here so I'm making a patchwork dress out of fabric scraps. So obsessed with how quilted coats look!
I like the way you cut it out. I’ve been noshing on it for weeks, because I wanted to keep the sewing to a minimum and perhaps get the edging that’s already on the blanket/quilt in position so that it becomes the hem/end of pieces. I may use this idea and still break it up into pieces but it’s given me a path. Thank you!
I make quilts and I hope many years into the future someone makes a coat like these out of them :)
I love them both! But that long time is more what I’m hoping for. Thanks for sharing your process.
Both turned our fabulously😊
Both were pretty!! But I loved the second best!!
Just gorgeous! Thanks for showing us how to make it. A great way to repurpose old quilts.
Love both. Second one is my favourite. I’ve never seen a second hand quilt in an Australian charity shop though. Those things are precious.
And you took that quilt all apart, cut and re/-sewed the “new” jacket
Really-you’re hired-! 😮
Love both! So cool… funny thing, I just bought a bunch of squares of Japanese themed fabric to make a jacket similar to yours… then I remembered that I have 3 100 year old hand sewn quilt tops! Now I’m set, with your inspiration
, to make a few of these gorgeous jackets… thank you so much for sharing your instructions… this will be a fun bunch of projects❤️
They both turned out great!!
Thank you for sharing this wonderful tutorial. I like the second better.
haven't sewn in years going to pick it up again.. this is going to be one of my first projects 🥰
You did an amazing job on both coats!😄
Fabulous makes!! So beautiful and gorgeous! Simplicity with that touch of eclectic sense of style. I love both makes!! 🥰🥰🥰
Both jackets are very, very cute, one of a kind for sure. Thanks for sharing.
Very cute! You go girl! A quilt jacket is like a warm hug.
Thank you for the beautiful inspiration I loved both and how you put the slits on the sides 💕🙋🏽♀️
I had never seen a quilted jacket! But they're so cute! Thanks for sharing 🤗🤗
Love your glasses! Super stylish. Thanks for the instructions.
Wow you did an awesome job I like the first one better because I like the sleeve on it but the second one looks just as nice beautiful job❣️🪡🧵✂️💗💓💕❤️
A quilted coat would be fabulous! I quilt and I want one!!
I cannot say which I 💕 more... ohh you have inspired me....huge Town wide garage sale this weekend..I wasn't going to go... but now I'm on hunt for a quilt to make a jacket from!!!
They are both awesome!!
It’s gorgeous! Am on the hunt for quilts!
I love the large cuffs on both and the split hems. Very nice! Not sure I could ever cut up one of my quilts though. Thrift stores here I come!
Super cute. I like both!!
Love ‘em both. However, if I have to pick one, I pick the very first one you made. I love the colors. You did a great job. Thanks so much for sharing!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I have just subscribed to your channel. I love your quilt coat tutorial from 2 years ago. What did you do with the other quilts and fabrics which you bought?❤❤❤
I have a suggestion for the French type vintage fabric, you can make a coat and use that fabric as a liner, it’ll look so elegant. By the way both coats are gorgeous. I am a quilter and will try doing this myself, thanks for the inspiration.
I bet these would be great for outdoor use especially camping in the winter. I've seen people use the old surplus military blankets and turn those into jackets for the outdoors too.
I love them both. Thanks for the inspiration.
Wow, nice work ma'am! I didn't know I wanted to make a quilt coat until I came upon your video. I'd love to make a Kung Fu jacket from an old quilt I've been carrying around for a few years now.
They turned out soooo cute!!
I love quilting but wanted to do something more fun than blankets. I made my daughter a quilt poncho and now have a pattern to make my own coat. Thank you!!!
Fabulous! I want one! I loved both!!!
Love the sleeves on the second one !!!
I’m in love!!!! Great job! So cute
That is a walking foot. You must stitch (quilt) the top of the coat because the batting will fall apart. Nice quilt find.
LOVE THEM BOTH. BUT THE ONE WITH THE BLACK BINDING IS SO RICH. GREAT JOB
Thanks for the inspiration!! Great job on both!
I actually love the jacket you’re wearing at the first of the video.
Love your coat! What kind of quilting did you do to hold the layers together & ensure the batting doesn't come apart when it's washed/worn?
Please make sure that you actually quilt this coat meaning that you take your sewing machine and so across the quilt squares or diamonds as you prefer, so that it will all stay together. If you don't, when you wash it, the batting will disintegrate. Your work is just beautiful. You did a great job.
Fantastic DIY inspiration. BODE also has a line of upcycled quilt garments.
Absolutely amazing! I want one!
They both turned out so pretty!! 💕✨ My favorite would be the second one 💕
Both are fantastic!
Amazing job on both,. but the second one is stunning on you. Nice projects.
Absolutely adorable
I love it. Both
I really like the short one. I am getting ready to make one upon a request from a friend.
Love both of them!!
I’m so glad I found this video! Thanks for sharing
beautiful knotted comforter. Beautiful old vintage fabric.
Interesting. I've been thinking of doing the same with a couple quilts given to me. I was planning to make both reversible with a simple, but still quilted fabric for the reverse side and trim.
I love that this style is perfect for big patch pockets.
You are soooo talented! I love the shorter jacket! I wish you had given us some measurements as a general guideline.
Both are amazing !!!
Hey 👋
This quilt coat come up beautifully ❤
So glad I stumbled across your channel!! Great video, gorgeous work!
What pattern did you use? Or did you draft it yourself? So cute! The second one is my favorite 😍
She's not answering her comments. Not good.
I love both, but the 2nd one a bit more! Great job!
Don’t you think not having the money to buy someone else’s coat is more fun? I do! Thrifting, imagination much more fun!
Like both very creative. Really pretty. Great job.
Beautiful, great job!
You can make reversible coat by sewing the seams with bias tapes.
Is there a reasone you didn't quilt the patchwork fabric?
That’s totally amazing. I’m going to try it
I really, really like the last one! But both are nice. Now, let's see what you make out of that afghan. LOL
They are both gorgeous! What type of batting did you use? A lightweight 80/20? You could sell that pattern!! 😍
Make a reversible jacket or coat from the Tied Quilt. Reversible is really easy to make. Have you thought about washing these quilts before putting time and effort into the new project? I would hand wash in mild shampoo, baby shampoo is good as it's fairly neutral and doesn't foam too much
Loved this 🥰👌😍
Very impressive! Both are darling.
That came out really really nice. Looks really nice on you. I quilt.
So cute!!!! What are the length n width of the sleeve on the second coat? Just what I was looking for! Thank you!!
well done - these are beautiful.
This coat is SO dope!!!!!
I just love it’s 💖💖💖💖💖💖
I like the kimono one best.
Good morning beautiful crafts video well done 💕
My grandma used to take old quilts and cover them w new tops!
Amazing! 3 hours! Still fast.
❤❤
I love both, but I would wear the short jacket more often. Where did you find the shop with piles of quilts and quilt tops? Mind sharing your secret shopping trip?
That's gorgeous!!! Too bad there's no way to thrift quilts so cheaply in Europe. Well done!
Love both.
The quilt you want to separate is a tied quilt and it will be easy for you to separate.
Make a reversible jacket. That would be awesome.
Very pretty. Well done. Inspiring. Thank you. Sandra B.
Cool video! Another brand that I think anyone here that's interested might want to check out is Bode NYC. Their garments are all one of a kind and they do special order. But fair warning it ain't cheap.
I would love to be able to have access to these second hand quilts!!!
Beautiful!!!!!!
