Thank you for this! Last Fall I had a male and female oriole show up for the first time ever. I looked them up to see what to feed them and jelly was one of the offerings I put out. They loved it. This Spring the female came back and took twine and other bits from my yard for her nest, but they didnt visit the feeder at all. So I removed the jelly and fruit and left only the sugar water which the hummingbirds drink. I did plan on putting jelly back in the fall for them if they return. This gives me some time to devise a covered feeder. All the ones I see in the store, sadly, are open dishes.
I raised a Raven last summer. Chose to stay around and is never caged, clipped, or tethered. Downloaded some of our interactions if interested. Blessing and Experience of my life!
I want to thank you so much for opening my eyes re feeding jelly to orioles. I have never done it, I am 70 years old, and up until this year I never put out the jelly. Not sure why. Somehow I Just didn’t feel right about doing it. This year, two days ago to be exact, I put out some grape jelly into a newly purchased Oriole feeder. It also has orange halves prongs on this feeder. The only bird I have seen at this feeder so far is a cat bird. He seems to love the jelly. He does not touch the orange. My hummingbird feeders are on the opposite side of my house. I shall remove the jelly as to your recommendation. First thing tomorrow. I am on Cape Cod, East coast, USA. By the way, I LOVE your channel. So many great ideas. Many thanks for your great ideas and advice. Val, Falmouth, Ma.❤
How sad. I don’t think I’d ever think of putting uncovered jelly outside. The bugs would be attracted to the jelly. I’m so glad that you have this knowledge. I love to feed the birds in my yard. Tfs. Have a great evening.🤗
There are even Oriole feeders with places to put orange halves on spikes AND jelly in little open reservoirs. I've considered getting one, because I'm so thrilled to finally live someplace that has an Oriole population.😁 But I'm SO glad I didn't purchase one yet. I will definently look for one that isn't dangerous for hummers, or make one with a mesh covering that prevents hummers from getting jelly on themselves. Thank you Robbie!!! I love my little hummers and would never want to harm them.❤
I’ve been feeding the Orioles jelly for years. They migrate into the central states and we love them . we haven’t done it to hurt any other birds so don’t get your feathers ruffled.😂 Also we tend to love the bugs, and the other birds that eat the jelly. Bees love the jelly. What Robbie has done has taught us optional ways to feed our Orioles that will protect our hummingbirds. We learn as we go through life and this is something that we’re just learning, so we will adapt to protect the Hummers while also enjoying our Orioles. And just a sidenote, nobody can ever get an oriole to eat out of an oriole feeder in this area. The Orioles that come to my yard do not eat the oranges, although other peoples Orioles do.😋🙂 I will keep putting the jelly out, but I will make it safe for the Hummers 🙂
Thanks for the warning. Knowing how sticky jelly is, I imagine it acts like glue, sticking their feathers together and making it impossible to fly. Personally, I've never used it and have had plenty of luck attracting Orioles with just ordinary Hummingbird feeders and nectar. Their hole size seems ample as well without any enlargement needed.
Thank you for your public service message! Also important is not to use commercial red dye sugar water for hummers. According to Jean Roper, the Hummingbird Lady in Lomita who does hummer rescue, it gives them blood clots and they die. So white sugar water only 1/4 cup white sugar to 1 cup filtered water (I use a Berkey Water Filter). I also clean the feeders really well so no slimy mold from the sun. Occasionally I do a 5% bleach solution dip so all bacterial and mold is dead and a very good rinse out and air dry before refilling. Yellow and red colors are the only colors that hummers see so be sure your feeders have both. I enlarged the holes with a hot plastic shish kabab stick and propane torch or gas burner to heat up the rod. One great idea on RUclips, was to hang a plastic frisbee over each feeder for shade so the sugar water does not heat up or spoil as fast and they get shade while drinking. Thank you for your amazing garden, your dedication to nurture these marvels of nature, and your compassion. Very commendable, and great to see. I've done animal rescue since I was a toddler literally. Giving back to wild species is a joy.
Living here in Northern Ohio our hummingbirds have never gone near the Oriole feeder with grape jelly and they’re about 4’ apart. Sorry for that problem out your way. How you attract all those hummingbirds is amazing!
You're right about not being aware of this. I had no idea that birds even liked jelly. I know I certainly can't stand to get anything sticky on me it drives me crazy so I can't imagine what it would be like for poor little hummingbird to get something like jelly all over themselves and with their long beaks not be able to get the sticky off of themselves it must be terrifying for them. I hope this video keeps playing and playing and that it reaches people all over the world. Cause I'm sure that people that do feed birds would love to know this information and will immediately stop feeding jelly or sticky things to birds or any animals I think a big part of it is getting the education out there to learn about what not to give birds because there's really no information out there about it so thank you for sharing this video and teaching me something that I had no idea about I'm so very grateful to you for that. So come on all the bird loving people out there in the world just stop giving birds jelly or anything sticky that can harm any other birds or animals. And watch this video and learn all about it. Thank you again for doing this video and teaching me something that I had know idea about and I've never even ever given it much thought until just now today at 6pm in the evening. Ok take care.
Thanks for advice 🙏 I wouldn't put jelly outside. I have numerous fruit tree and flower tree and flower plants. I had the plant mister on outside today. Numerous hummingbirds and birds flying through the water mist. so cute. 😊
Thank you for sharing this information. I had not heard about this danger to my hummers. I modified my oriole feeder this morning and hung it back outside. My Oriole tried it out right away and seems to love it! Now my feeding station is safe for everyone Btw I made a solar fountain also and hung it out for the hummers, waiting for them to notice and start using it. I love your channel!
Great suggestions, as always! I’m also in SoCal. For a while I was putting grape jelly on an oriole feeder. But what I found was that the orioles mostly ignored it and fed on sugar water from the larger holes in my hummingbird feeder instead, where the yellow plastic flowers had broken off. It was mainly the house finches that gobbled up the jelly and sometimes a mockingbird,. That feeder was always such a mess that I had to wash it daily. Eventually I stopped using it, and I still have plenty of orioles all summer. Incidentally, the large flower-less holes in the hummingbird feeder also attract ladder backed woodpeckers. Lately with temperatures above 100° F, I’ve seen the woodpeckers sometimes drink sugar water first, and then drink plain water from a hanging birdbath before departing.
Orioles come here during winter and leave before the weather gets really hot for the jelly to be sticky. I have never seen a hummingbird going into the grape jelly but it is good to be aware of it. Another thing to consider is the suet that in warm weather it can melt and get into the birds feathers and hurt them. I feed (my) birds: orange, apple, banana, mango, sweet lime, mandarine, etc. but they love oranges the most then the apples. For the hummingbirds I do prepare the water-sugar nectar and for other birds I give them also a mix of grains. I do it everyday. Thank you for your advice!
Never considered putting jelly out. The bees are bad enough in the summer. Good to know. You are the hummingbird whisperer. Love your videos. Thank you❤
Wow when i bought a so called oriel feeder which has prongs to put orange halves on with a small bowl for jelly. That is how thwy advertise it. Thank you so much for this awesome info. Thank you again
I’ve never heard of the grape jelly, and I’m so glad that you took the time to share. I learned about the spider webs by the feeders the hard way, and I’m so glad I found the hummie all tangled up in it, so I took it to the kitchen sink with a little bit of Dawn liquid, I was able to get it all cleaned up.
Thank you for sharing this. I saw a an Oriole at one of my feeders this year, so I was thinking about setting out jelly next year for them. I will keep all of this in mind. I didn't realize it was a hazard for hummingbirds; they really are are delicate, though beautiful and amazing, little creatures.
Glad to pass on any info that is important for us to know on hummingbirds, and other fun hummingbird diy’s and facts. Thank You So Very Much for the generous Super Thanks! So greatly appreciated ❤️🌸😊💕 Again Thank You ❤️❤️❤️
It’s so fun learning. We here in the central states have been feeding jelly to the Orioles for years. During the months of April-June ,when migration is peak, you can hardly buy grape jelly in the store. I’ve always stocked up through the winter so I didn’t have to worry about running around finding it. During that peak migration, I’ll go through two jars of jelly a day . I will now be adapting how I put it out☺️
I didn't know this about the jelly! But I never put it out for any of the birds. And now I know that I will never put it out for any of the birds! Thanks again, Robbie! I love you guys and all the info you've sent about the hummingbirds! ❤❤😊
Glad you used the word addiction because that is the most appropriate word to use I could think of. Corn syrup and sugar are my gateway drugs and one I still battle to this day. 5 years sober from alcohol as long as I have my sugary drinks.
Thank you for this! Give us more tips on how to keep our hummingbirds safe. I have orioles visiting for the first time. They spook more easily than my hummingbirds so I can't get a good look, but they are bigger and I worry for my hummingbirds. I considered getting a separate jelly feeder so they would stop trying to use the hummingbird feeder. I won't do that now.
Thank you for such a wonderful and thoughtful approach to this serious issue along with a well thought out remedy!! I love learning new and helpful information! You’re the best so we can be too!!!❤
OMGosh! Thanks for the heads up. We put out orange slices in a suet feeder for the orioles and considered putting out jelly, too. We have hummers, so we WON'T be doing that.
Robbie, thank you so much for not just telling us to stop, but also offering solutions. I am in Nebraska. I’ve been feeding orioles jelly for years. I have a flock that comes back to my house every year. They’re not eating as much right now because there’s lots of bugs out there, but I noticed the babies are coming in now and eating some jelly. We also have hummingbirds in our area. Although not like you do .😅 I will most definitely try your suggestions on how to make my jelly feeders safer. Thank you.!
I am in northern Utah. Our hummingbird know which feeders are theirs. We watch them out the kitchen window. We also have Bullock's Orioles. For some reason the orioles do not drink the sugar water anymore but they will eat orange halves and go crazy for grape jelly. The orioles have their own larger nectar feeders. I have two types. The Aspect's orange disc feeder and the old Perky Pet Deluxe glass colibri feeder. some years back the orioles stopped going to the nectar feeders. Do you know why they would stop? As for the jelly the hummingbirds have never gone near it. I also have a bird bath fountain in the back yard and I have seen the hummingbirds hover in the running water when it gets hot.
I bought an Oriole feeder with shallow jelly cups but it was late in the season so I saved it for later, people need to buy the feeders for orioles so they are safe
Thank you for this information, Robbie. I never realized that it could harm hummingbirds. If I put it out, I'll be sure the hummers can't get sticky from it.
Thank you for making these videos. I want to make some of the fountain kits you show, but am skeptical about using ebay. Are there any amazon links or do you not trust them? Thanks again for these videos.
Thank you for bringing this to our attention. I have just started using the product “oriole nectar from sweet seed”. I put some in the bowl and the next morning it was full of insects like wasps, hornets, flies, ants and they are all dead , i know this is not your issue, but you have a platform to share this concern. I don’t think a product should be sold if the unintended species is damaged.
Hi Robbie this is off topic but I live in Michigan do you know if we get humming birds here? Since I've been watching your channel I want to try to attract those little beautiful birds...
Yes, you have a couple species of hummingbirds in Michigan. You would have to put a feeder out where they can see it and hope they’re in your area. The flowers will also bring them in. ❤
Thank you for such an informative and fun website. I've been trying to attract hummingbirds to my feeders for I don't know how long but with no success. I don't have a lot but I do have potted flowers and plants that are supposed to attract hummers and have one fountain thanks to learning, from you, about the solar pumps. I know there are hummingbirds in the area as I've seen them a few blocks away at feeders, but they don't come to my feeders. Any other suggestions as to how I can attract the hummingbirds? I put out the homemade nectar and change it every few days since I live in Florida and it's really hot here. My fountain and feeders are in the sun as I have no real shade. Anyway, thanks for any further advice you can offer and thank you for such an informative website. Keep doing what you're doing, you're making a difference. Have a great day...Judy :)
I didn’t know this but that’s a very informative app thanks Robbie as always you have made us feel better 🙏🏻👍♥️😊👩🌾 not to endanger our natures love this video ♥️😊
Thank you for the warning. I tried an Oriole feeder last year but worried about the hummingbirds so I only put the oranges on it and made extra nectar. They seemed happy with that.
We live in the deep south and three years ago, we routinely had a dozen hummingbirds. The last two years we have two or three. Others we have talked to have noted the same. Something catastrophic must have happened to the population but I haven’t been able to find any information on this.
Thank you for this video! I have been contemplating putting out a dish of grape jelly for the Orioles and now I have reconsidered and will not do that. I love the hummingbirds as much as I love the Orioles and do not want to cause any harm. Thank you for this video. 7:17
I get hummers every year, but this is my first year with orioles. My feeders don't seem to have big enough holes for them. They hop up & make noise directed at my door, but I don't see them drink. So I looked online & all I see are jelly/fruit feeders. I thankfully stumbled upon the dangers to the hummers & was looking for ways to cover the jelly or not use it altogether. I was just going to maybe fill the bowl with nectar, but I do have chicken wire Thank you so much for the suggestions!
I keep my grape jelly separated from my hummer feeders. HOWEVER, more importantly👈 don’t feed your birds HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP jelly. I use the “natural” grape jelly, made with cane sugar.
When I put out grape jelly once or twice the only thing I attract are ants and bugs so I stopped. Thank you for this information though I would not have known if you had not posted your video.
Any idea why california orioles would build a nest in a tree outside my window and then immediately completely disappear for the last few weeks? I haven't seen any at all in my neighborhood either. I live in Anaheim.
Noise, lack of food available to raise chicks, or something happened to one member of the pair, could be a number of reasons. They are nesting in our area
@RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy Thank you. All things I considered, but I still found it odd I haven't seen them anywhere in the neighborhood. I hope something didn't happen to one of them.
This might give you a laugh...My husband and I have trained ourselves to NOT swat at anything buzzing our ears. It's often not a bee or beetle, but a curious hummer keeping tabs on what we are up to or telling us to get off our fanny and refill the feeders :-)
Question: how do I get my charm of hummingbirds to recognize the water fountain? Fountain is within 6 feet of feeder, elevated, plants within 2 feet. I live on a mountain. I suppose our birds are not accustomed to running water, fountains. Thanks. I have followed you for years
Hi so I just started my hummingbird feeder because we have a tree that has pink flowers and is a bit sticky. I saw a hummingbird out there one so I got the feeder. So it is now a quarter full when it was filled completely but. I haven’t seen any birds and my feeder doesn’t seem to be leaking. What could this be? Do they come at night at times? I don’t find any ants
I have a question for you. I found a recipe that’s 1 cup of grape jelly, 1/2 cup of sugar, 1 cup of water and squeeze an orange. Boil the mixture until til dissolved. The oriels love it, but I saw some hummingbirds on the feeder too. In fact, they were eating the oriels food more than their own. Thoughts?
I happen to use the same feeder for both Hooded Orioles and hummers. However, the jelly is deposited in the central "moat" of the feeder and the hummers appear smart enough to go only for the nectar thru the tiny holes. There is a water trap above the feeder to discourage ants and crawling insects.
I'm in Washington state. Hummers have zero competition but for bees an ants if you buy or place feeders wrong. Use diluted cane sugar. Never corn sugars.
Robbie I never had Orioles until a few months ago. I got another feeder that was a 10 hole feeder that has the holes like u have Then came the Orioles & a mockingbird. They seem to get a long. Is it ok if the hummingbirds & Orioles drying out of the same feeder?
Texas- How do you get so many hummingbirds. We can get 2-3, but out of that one becomes a bully and chases off the other two any suggestions? Love birds too!
I don’t know why people have to feed birds jelly in the first place. For one thing, it contains HFCS. For another, it contains pectin. I don’t know why people think these two things are “natural” or “healthy” for a bird that is used to natural things. I find myself screaming at people not to put out jelly for ANY bird. A piece of an apple, an orange or even a banana that is left in the refrigerator is a much better, and healthier, choice.
People see and hear about things. They don't think what causes they might be doing. What a good idea, even if it's not. It's sad what some are doing to this little bird. I'm not putting out jelly because of heat, the ants, wild cat, and dogs that won't stay home. Plus, my brother dog eats everything. So 2 different feeders is a good idea. Thanks for the tip and lesson.
One time I found a sticky covered hummingbird right underneath on of my feeders, I called the wildlife rehabber and got instructions on how to bathe the hummingbird and she flew off, yeah! Not sure what happened, its a mystery but it must have been a fluke occurrence because I never had another problem..... except the time a hummingbird got stuck in a spider web so I saved that one too
I'm shocked. I have a jelly feeder. It's not far from my Hummer feeder. The jelly feeder is blue so the hummers haven't shown interest in it (that I know of). But I don't even want to take a chance on hurting my precious little jewels. The only thing that I'm super disappointed about is that house finches really seem to love the jelly and I don't think their beaks could reach inside an oriole feeder to get jelly in there. What if I stopped feeding jelly all together and peeled oranges with a knife and chopped the fruit finely and put that in a bowl for orioles and house finches? Do you think that would be safe for hummingbirds? I'd really like your input.
I have been feeding orioles for years along with hummingbirds. I have never ever seen a hummingbirds dive in grape jelly. I am not saying it never happened but hard to beleave it is happening all over. You said there fethers fall out if you touch them but you captured one and washed it did you wash off all the fethers? You do come up with some good ideas as alternative to try.
Maybe you can help us? We had 4 hummingbird feeders out and they were swamped with hummingbirds almost all the time. Hummingbirds were standing in line to eat. Stayed this way for 2 years. Due to the massive April and May rains here in So Cal. there has been a need for the neighborhood to clear their hills of weeds more than the usual once a year work. It seemed like overnight all of the hummingbirds disappeared. We leave regular cleaned food in one container now in hopes they will come back. At best, we've only seen 2 or 3 birds and they don't stay or feed. Clearing is finished now. Is there anything else going on other than Orioles (we usually only see a few of them every year and haven't seen any yet).
I used to have hummingbirds every year. The supermarket ran out of their favorite nectar so I made your recipe but they haven’t came back 😩. Is there anything else I can do? Thank you
WOW,IM IN MAINE..I HAVE ABOUT 5=7 HUMMINGBIRDS THAT SHOW UP TO 1 FEEDER..I HAVE 1 BULLY HB THAT FIGHTS THE REST OF AND AS LIKE YOU,I NEVER HAVE MORE THAN 1 HB AT A TIME FEEDING..VERY COOL SYSTEM YOU HAVE..
I have a big bird coming to feed on the hummingbird feeders. I don’t know what type of bird it is. It has a yellow chest/front and back is gray. Is this normal?
Thank you for this timely warning. I’m sure you will save many hummer’s life with this post. Good job Robbie, thank you.
I never gave that a thought. I’m so glad you brought this up. I removed my feeder as soon as I seen this. Thank you so much for the information.

Same. Our hummers never go near the oriole’s jelly. Unlike the catbirds and purple finches!
Like I said earlier, a lot of hick people are going to use jelly anyway.

Thanks Robbie.Very timely message. I was just reading about this.
I am glad you keep up with all these unsafe ways of feeding birds

Thank you for this! Give us more tips on how to keep our hummingbirds safe. I have orioles visiting for the first time. They spook more easily than my hummingbirds so I can't get a good look, but they are bigger and I worry for my hummingbirds. I considered getting a separate jelly feeder so they would stop trying to use the hummingbird feeder. I won't do that now.
The orioles will not hurt the hummingbirds, but the hummingbird’s leave when the orioles come.
Thank you.!
I never even knew grape jelly was used on anything besides toast or peanut butter. Think I'll keep it that way...why risk it 😔
You can use it to feed the orioles just do it like Robbie does.
Put that grape jelly on pancakes. Its delicious. Its like pancake crepes.
I would be worried about the seeds in the jelly. Couldn't a bird choak on them?
@@goldenvioletbirds eat seeds
@@sidneyvandykeii3169 seeds in jelly? That would be jam.
Thank you so much for putting this out, I'm sure alot of us didn't know this, I sure wasn't aware of this🤔 keep the knowledge coming🤗
Thanks for the information, I never thought of hummingbirds getting into the jelly. I’ll make a feeder for the jelly like you suggested.
I didn’t know this. Finches are also feeding on the jelly. Thank you for sharing this…I’ll change my ways.
Yes finches and even Robins here.
Thank you Robbie. I fed my Orioles jelly last year, they really didn't care for it. Esther
I would just stick to the hummingbird nectar, safer for all, Thank you ❤️
@@RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy I am and I'm going to try the oranges again. Thank you
Awesome~ Thank you for sharing the tips to keep those birds safe~🤗
I always check your channel before I put anything out for a bird. Thank you.
Okay. Got it. My hummingbirds are finally starting to engage with me on my porch. Definitely don't wanna do anything to hurt them. Thanks!
Good to know. Thank you Robbie.❤
Never knew anything about leaving jelly for orioles. I am so glad i watched your video.
Never would have thought about putting out jelly. Scary. Can you tell us the names of the hummingbirds?
I didn’t know this but that’s a very informative app thanks Robbie as always you have made us feel better 🙏🏻👍♥️😊👩🌾 not to endanger our natures love this video ♥️😊
Thank you, never thought of this. I’ve never put out jelly but I know others who have mentioned it. So sad.
Thank you for the warning. I tried an Oriole feeder last year but worried about the hummingbirds so I only put the oranges on it and made extra nectar. They seemed happy with that.
Thank you for this warning!! I have shared this on my FB feed!!! I will tell everyone I know.
Please do, Thank You so Much ❤️
@@RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy You are welcome
Ty so much for the oriel feeder tip I love hummingbirds to much to ever do harm to them🥰
Never knew this. Thank you. I can adjust how I will feed in the future. (Have never used jelly)
I keep my grape jelly separated from my hummer feeders. HOWEVER, more importantly👈 don’t feed your birds HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP jelly. I use the “natural” grape jelly, made with cane sugar.
Thank you!!! Great advice!!!! ❤
Wow. I did not know this. Thank you for this information.
I purchased a very pretty one made of brass wire. I think I'll use it for something else. Thank you soo much for sharing!
Thank you for posting this where everybody can see this hopefully people will stop doing that and save the hummingbirds😪🙏💕🦋🌅
you live on the west coast? I see hills and palm trees. I didnt know Orioles lived out there
When I put out grape jelly once or twice the only thing I attract are ants and bugs so I stopped. Thank you for this information though I would not have known if you had not posted your video.
Thank you for this information about the hidden dangers of jelly for birds
My pleasure
I place banana peals over tree branches which attracts fruit flies. I've seen birds pecking at them and heard humming birds will eat the flies.
Wow I love your yard I also love my birds I feed them winter and summer I use to live in riverside California
Wow. I had no idea...thank you so much!
This was a great video. Thanks for the education and some practical solutions. Beautiful bird garden!
No, they do not feed at night, but other animals could be trying to get to it
I have a question for you.
Love the fountains! How do you make them? Going to check your other videoes. Just subscribed
Que belleza de pajaritos son hermosos
I'm in Washington state. Hummers have zero competition but for bees an ants if you buy or place feeders wrong. Use diluted cane sugar. Never corn sugars.
I love you, thank you people need to know. I'm making a solar fountain for my birds. I love all wildlife. ❤
Thank you so much for this video! I was just getting ready to do exactly the wrong thing and put jelly out!
Thank you for this very informative message. I had no idea. ❤❤❤❤
You are so welcome ❤
Well they don’t read or research what they put into their own bodies so your expectations are rather high.
Thanks for the info. I would not chance it.
Any tips for keeping Orielles away from humming bird feeders? Can’t stand how they come after the uninhabited feeders.
Thank you my friend, I never thought of that before and I never see Orioles but I have used it for mockingbirds.❤
I put up hummingbird feeder but none of them are coming in northern Az just curious why
Can you put hummingbird food in an open bowl?
I never have problems with hummingbirds and Oriol sharing feeders 😊
My hummingbird feeder is hanging at the front of my house. My Oriole feeders are at the back of my house. I have no problem
I have a big bird coming to feed on the hummingbird feeders. I don’t know what type of bird it is. It has a yellow chest/front and back is gray. Is this normal?
