So, if for some reason you are in some dire need of water and for some reason you can’t drink from the tap of the sink or bath, and all you have is the toilet (likely scenario, I know), drink the water from the toilet TANK. I was wondering if there was bacteria in the tank, and I am surprised that there is such a Little amount. Not saying there always will be a little amount, but it sure seems safer than drinking from the toilet bowl.

I took my dog to the vet a few years ago because she drank out of the toilet that had a bleach disk in the tank. What he said was hilarious and I still laugh every time I think about it. He said she should be fine from the bleach because its so diluted and as far as the bacteria goes, its highly unlikely that will hurt her because and I quote: "a dog can eat something that will kill a human and not even get a fart stuck sideways". He was an old cowboy and kind of gruff but hilarious.

I once saw a documentary following the life of an IV heroin addict/ He was followed into a public toilet and I got a real shock when he took his shot water from the puddle at the bottom of the bowl. I couldn't believe it as he casually draws water into his syringe straight from the bowl. I would have thought an addict using toilet water for a shot would at least open up the cistern and take it from there. I know a guy who took his shot water from a puddle on top of a bashed in wheelie bin lid. God only knows how he's still alive.

It's both fascinating and sadding to see that in most circumstances it's not the bacteria's activity that kills you, but rather our own immune system overreacting. I wonder why we didin't elvove to better regulate our immune response so it dosen't kill us.

    • @emeraldadventurer254

It's definitely worse nowadays with all of our hygiene advancements.
Back in the day, people would drink Bacteria filled water, eat unclean foods, and just be in and around dirt 24/7, which made their immune systems not overreact. Nowadays we live as clean as possible, and it causes these overreactions of our immune systems. Ancient humans probably evolved immune systems that worked well with the amount of dirt they encountered, but overreact when we live super clean like we do now.

Though perhaps we could use to play in the dirt (sand) more, even as adults and i know it sounds silly but well it can still be fun, and you have a relatively lower risk of getting serious ilnesses... perhaps when you get to senior age you have to stop that since your immune system would be quite weak by then.

We did. But MOST of society is almost TOO hygienic. We aren't introduced to disease very often, so when our bodies are, we overreact. Septic shock is also extreme because it's in our blood. Our immune systems are MUCH better at fighting an infection in an isolated area. When your entire body is essentially hindered and infected, your really screwed.

Due to the way water is flushed from the toilet bowl, there is either an infinitesimally small or nonexistent chance that bacteria finds its way back up into the tank, as corroborated by the test done in this video. If you are in a massive emergency and the toilet is the only option, then the tank is far far better for you than the bowl, but you are just as able to unscrew the pipe bringing water to the toilet and drink directly from the clean plumbing, equivalent to drinking from the sink. You will make a massive mess on the floor, but it IS an extreme emergency after all.

    Huh.
I had this dream the other day. Basically the whole city ran out of tap water EXCEPT for the pipes in my toilet. We kept that as a secret but we had to drink water from there.
I mean it was a dream so I didn't consider than using the tank was better or simply re routing the water from the pipe into a faucet.
    Dreams.

Nothing should happen, just because there's bacteria that doesn't mean they're bad, most of them could be gut bacteria, gut bacteria stay in your gut so ingesting it should be safe and @darkscienceyt didn't say how much bad bacteria and gut bacteria there were. I will strong advise you to not drink any if it's not necessary. The only problem i could think of is if someone and any desese (like ebola) and used the toilet and you drink it you could possibly get the desese so be safe. (Sorry for bad english)
