Nerdarchy just seen this video. I did this build as a half-orc before. GM very picky about stuff like this without a good backstory. Backstory was a tribe warrior who’s tribe got over run and he was found half dead and was saved by some monks who took him in and trained him to control his rage. His god of course being the orcs deity.

you should look up a guy called ranton, he trained with the shaolin monks, and it turns out that most of that peace and tranquility stuff were for tourists and donation money, they are warriors first and foremost, and train their asses off to be the best they can be at kicking someone's ass.

Its a case of ying and yang. The monk presumes to be a balanced character, yet he is always peaceful, calm, and in-control. That's not balance - its one-sided. To truly understand the coldness and serenity of ice, one must understand the passion and fury of fire. Embrace the rage, it too is natural.

A badly injured 9th Level Barbarian is found by Monks from a secluded monastery. He learns to channel his Rage into Ki as he is nursed backed to health. The Abbot, noticing his potential, begins to teach him from an ancient secret scroll no one has been able to master for over a century. The Barbarian begins taking the first steps of learning "The Raging Fist of the Stormlands."

My personal build is Monk (Open Hand) 6 and Barbarian (Path of the Zealot) 14. That 1d6+7 Radiant damage on top of 1d6+8 for the first attack (that hits) is spicy as hell, and I think it's one of the few Monk/Barb builds that actually fits thematically. You're from a monestary to a war/strength god. No real need for any twisted reason to follow both paths; it's technically within your tenets to follow such a path.

I like this idea. I think you can take it more in terms of the PC or his master perhaps studied hurricanes and tempest, and was awed by the power and their nature of swirling rage and chaos with a center of inner peace and tranquility, the Eye of the Storm. And that true power comes from the point between Rage and Serenity. Perhaps he/she was a pirate or sailor who survived a such a storm and became a survivor on some deserted island where he became a hermit who trained in this way and is now making his way back into society. I don't know, just adding my 2 cents.

I built a triton long death totem Barbarian bear (orca for flavour) with haunted one background. He’s being watched by an abyssal harvester that took his fellow monks and before his grand master was taken he was given the scroll of the long death, to help him destroy this thing. Later on he met a hermit that taught him how to channel the totem of the orca (bear) in an attempt to quell his anger over his lost comrades. He’s a decent tank/h2h combatant that is difficult to kill lol. Lvl 15

  • @MrDarkweaver

Maybe the backstory that makes logical sense if you want to go monk first, is the monastery where the character studied, studied a particular form of martial arts that reflected a particular animal spirit (like various classical Chinese Kung-Fu styles).
For example, a grappling style with hand strikes for bear, a mobility based style with rapid striking, and flying kicks for eagle, and a mobile, flanking style based low kicking and strikes designed to try and knock your opponent prone before finishing them off for wolf.
A tragedy happens at the monastery which drives the character to grief, but this unlocks a spiritual connection to the totem of his style, fuelled by his grief and rage at the tragedy at the monastery.
His first 2 levels levels of barbarian are when his rage takes him over, and he is learning to control it, that way when you choose your path at 3rd level as Path of the Totem, you can thematically link your training as a monk to your totem as a barbarian, and as you level up as a barbarian, I see the character learning to channel his rage through his previous martial arts training. What do you guys think?

I've been running this build for about 6 months now on a half-orc. It is super powerful and works very well. For the most part, I don't worry much about Dex or Wisdom because you could still use Strength for unarmed, even as a monk. I feel to note the fluidity in mechanics is so good: reckless + bonus action attacks, Danger Sense + Evasion, Resistances + Deflect missiles, ect. However, I am building just a bit differently than your version here. I keep the d6 unarmed and go 9 monk and 11 Barbarian, for the Relentless feature. Flavorfully, I feel it better suits the brawler build this is going for and when stacked with the half-orc racial feature it becomes highly difficult to fell this character. High AC, Resistances, lots of hp, advantage on Dex saves that you only take half damage if you fail somehow, crazy mobility, and high damage output. This has become my favorite way to play and all straight from the PHB. Subclasses I go with: Totem of the Bear and Way of the Open Palm.

I really REALLY wish there was a class that wasnt monk but still specialized in unarmed combat. My favorite unexplored character concept is a hand-to-hand muscle man - think Zangief, Disney Hercules (for the most part), etc. But for the past three editions, d&d has this weird idea that the only hand-to-hand class players could possibly want is a monk.

If you use a shield, you lose the benefit of the monk damage die as well as the extra attack using your bonus action. I might also suggest the Water Genasi. You don't get bonus to Str, but the bonus to Con helps def and the Wis boost will help with your Monk class features. Plus you have a 30 swim speed, and the boost to movement from both barbarian and monk say nothing about it being land speed only. :)

Chops I agree. After watching this video i did some theorycrafting on this build. Lizardfolk do indeed give this build the best racial features. The 1d6 bite as an unarmed attack (which counts for the monk's martial arts), the lizard folk Unarmored Defense gives you an AC of 15 at level 1 (compared to 12 or 13 using the Monk or Barb feature), added swim speed, hungry jaws, and skill proficiencies. not to mention 15 minutes of holding breath (basically immunity to gas spells and effects, suffocation, and drowning) and Crafty Artisan flavor feature.

I just had a player in campaign go with a monk / kensai dip into barbarian. Her model was the Bride from Kill Bill with a focus on hunting down cultists. Special nod to Nerdarchy - I was inspired by the gnome monk chain build that Nerdarchy did a feature on and developed a similar idea within the campaign world. She was inspired by that idea of cult hunting monks and began her monk build and off it went.

I actually made a barbarian monk but it was more for story reasons. The character was a Minotaur that wandered from his labyrinth and was reformed by a traveling high monk who brought him back to his monastery. As far as the rage tranquility thing, the martial arts are built into muscle memory meaning he'd be able to use them (though less effectively) while raging. As for the Ki aspect, Ki can come from emotions so him raging but channeling that into his fist as a sort of silent berserker would work narrative wise as well.

Grappling is also an interesting aspect of this build. With a walking speed of 85 or so, you could easily pick up an enemy, walk him to a ledge and just push him. note on the lizardfolk shield monk: monks can also kick, and you could use your bite melee as an unarmed attack as a lizardfolk

I had an idea to make an Elf-Orc monk. Since his elf side and orc side were in conflict with each-other, he retreated to a monastery to study with the monks on how to find inner-peace and balance within himself, which sounds like how a Barbarian Monk could work. However, I haven't found a DM willing to accept an Elf-Orc character.

I did this build and pretty much make a sayain. Human and take mage initiate cleric and used guiding bolt as the level one spell light and thaumaturgy as the cantrips. I only made it to level 5 and didn’t really build much past it but it was bad ass. Did path of the sunsoul at lv 3 monk and put 2 lv in barbarian

So i am playing a barbarian monk atm in our homebrew campaign and i gotta say its pretty neato. Also i wouldnt say they are opposed. My guy has kindof a hulk issue with having a chemical accident that puts him into constant subconcious rage, and the hand to hamd combat that he learned from monks helps him control it, it serves as kind of a vent for him.

I imagine the Half-Orc might have struggled with the rage inherent to their heritage, and so retreated from society in order to get a handle on it. Just get out, so they couldn't hurt anyone, and where they wouldn't have the stress of civilization setting them off all the time. And over the course of solitary contemplation, they studied the natural world, forming a martial art that channeled their rage in a focused, controlled manner.

Starting class really depends on what unarmored defense you want. But I would start with Barbarian as that gives you the most Hp starting out.

  • @Nurk0m0rath
    @Nurk0m0rath 6 лет назад +9

Hmm, random thought. Would you allow a shield to be claimed as a monk weapon, as essentially an extension of your punching? If so, a shield could actually be your main weapon and you could go for a serious Captain America styled fighter running around with the high con, dex, and str, and only decent mental stats, doing shield bashes and throws and then relying on punches and kicks until you recover your shield.

I'm imagining something like Ron Swanson for the characters personality but him as a bare knuckle boxer.
Variant human with a feat like mobile or defensive dualist, I would start as a barbarian and switch to monk at level 2 highest stats Str, Dex, Con and just enough Wis for the multiclass.
Trade in that great axe for a dagger and go way of the open fist and just beat everyone unconcious while raging and stick all the stat upgrades into Str, Dex and Con.

So this particular style of character as been on my mind for a while I have wanted to do an unarmed character for sometime but not a monk. So far the best I've come up with is elderich knight at 7th lvl using alter self to make there fists as hards as iron. This gives you 1d6 +1 combined with the dueling fighting style and a shield ( required to make the fighting style work). One should get better average dmg then a monk per round and spellcasting. If your unfortunate enough to lose concentration you can always summon a weapon

Dragonborn w/dragon hide racial feat + Warlock + Pact of the Tome using the Primal Savagery druid cantrip gives a really nice unarmed(claw) attack for a d4+2d10 @ 5th level. You can use the True Strike cantrip to give advantage on your attack to make sure that you leave some really cool wolverine claw marks on your foe.

So, here is how I built the same concept: Tabaxi, monk 17, barb 3, taking long death and wolf totem. I had a bit of an advantage with stats because we roll at my table, and reroll anything less than 13, so i generally have pretty high stats all around. Now this is an insanely crazy build because of the tabaxi ability to double speed, meaning that the max speed without feats is 120 every other turn. With the special abilities that come with the death class, you could zip around the battlefield to all sides and end your turn by almost guaranteeing a kill on an enemy at the cost of a few ki points, and be out of everyone else's range. Pair that up with rage and the other barbarian stuff and damn.

Legend has it that the original Shaolin Temple was founded by former bandit kings who wanted to repent their wicked ways without compromising their security. Why both Shaolin temples are so remote and built like fortresses.
So Barbarian rage is fundamental to Shaolin monk. Not so sure about the other monestary systems where stick fighting and such were taught as part of self defense who would "liberate" a monk of the collected tithes.

Interesting. I've been dealing with this idea for a few days now as I'd like to replicate Dragon Warrior from Battle Realms - kinda half-naked guy with a giant curvy sword that can be set on fire and they also have Chi shield that absorbs damage. As this would be a totally flavour-based character, I've decided to give him Counterattack (homebrew) due to the lack of armor. Counterattack: you can use your reaction to punch a counterattack (both armed and unarmed attacks) to block the incoming blow. Roll a full attack and if a number you roll is higher than the opponent's, the attack is deflected. Any thoughts?

I like the idea of a human who studies at a monastery. There, they specialise in conserving rage for the battle, in which they ham on people and literal tear them apart. This person completed/flunked their test to be an 'elite' and are on a quest of the monastery to do something/gain redemption.
