      @@ATinyWaffle Barbarian/Champion works well for crit fishing as well, and you can use rogue, paladin, or whisper bard to make use of the crits when you do get them. Champion gives you a x2 chance of crit, and barbarian lets you take advantage on demand, rolling twice for twice the crit rate. Go zealot and devotion paladin to really double down on that divine champion theme, or tribal scout for a more naturalistic approach.

    I play a BarbLock, it's super fun running into the baddies coated in ice (armor of Agathys) and really powerful and thematic. I've stared down groups of ogres and went toe to toe with a giant.
    I play a deep arctic barbarian who has made a pact with the great old one that my tribe worships, in the long run he intends to be a guardian/shaman for his tribe but right now he's on his journey to adulthood. This is a process that all warriors coming into adult hood have to go through. He has traveled further than any who have returned in several generations, as well as already being gone for longer.

    • @user-mu8ok5xf8d

      Dude that actually sounds interesting. You only need three levels in barbarian to get the subclass

    • @BouncingTribbles
      @BouncingTribbles 2 года назад

      @@user-mu8ok5xf8d you've got it halfway. Level 6 old one warlock gets you resistance to psychic damage too, at level 9 you can have resistance to ALL damage while raging.
      You want level 5 barb at least for two attacks though, ideally 8/8 for the most feats. I like 4 rogue to top it off for assassin and another feat. Primary stats should be con-dex with at least 13 in str and cha. It's easy to have 19 or 20 AC at level one as a barbarian with decent rolls (and a shield). You miss out on some higher level abilities but you can end up with a really nasty sniper who can headshot from half a kilometer away with no penalties who is also really hard to kill in melee.
      You can also fit most of "the wrestler" in there if you don't want to take ranged and stealth feats. (You could also go Goliath, +2 str helps with the multiclassing)
      Devil sight+Darkness is an amazing combo
      improved pact weapon gives you a[ny] +1 magic weapon that you can sneak through airport security pat downs
      If you get to three invocations being able to cast detect magic at will can save you from so many dangerous situations
      (It also makes sorting through loot a breeze and you'll never miss a magic item while searching again, my old DM always let me use the "assist" action by telling the searching player if there was anything magical where they told me to look)
      I recommend mending and prestidigitation with outsider background for almost complete self sufficiency in your travels
      That's my version of a mage scout anyways :)

    I actually made a feat a while back called Rage Mage. One of my players is a Barbarian/Sorcerer and is planning on getting it next level.
    "Rage Mage
    Prerequisite: Barbarian and the ability to cast at least one spell
    You may cast evocation and abjuration spells of a spell slot equal to half of your proficiency bonus, rounded down, while you are raging that do not require concentration.
    When you gain this feat, choose one of the following damage types: acid, cold, fire, lightning, or thunder. While you are raging, you emit an aura of pure arcane energy. When a hostile creature ends its turn within 5 ft. of you, it takes damage equal to your Rage damage of the chosen damage type."

    • @Nagluuu
      @Nagluuu 5 лет назад +4

      great feat but...i'd take out the second part
      the ability to cast a spell as a raging barbarian is extremely strong by itself (even with those limitations you had in), addin aoe free damage too it's a bit too much IMHO
      or you can make that last part activate using a spellslot right when you rage
      as you wrote it you could take this feat with just pure barbarian and no other class, just take a lv1 barbarian variant human with one of these feats (magic initiate, ritual caster, spell sniper) and you can right away take the rage mage feat, rage and have free 2 fixed aoe damage around you without using ANY spell at all at level 1...that's quite strong

    • @agilemind6241
      @agilemind6241 5 лет назад +2

      Does it though? Warlocks are generally using their Charisma for their weapon attacks which should make most Barbarian abilities invalid since it is no longer a Strength-based attack. Most of their good spells are combat spells and require concentration and/or are designed for up-casting so will quickly be useless if you're just taking a couple levels of it, and with so few spell slots Warlock generally aren't your utility caster so most likely those slots are going to go to waste.

    • @micmic2575
      @micmic2575 5 лет назад +5

      Yep, just a single level in Hexblade allows you to Hexblade curse 1 target to take your proficiency bonus in extra damage per hit. It's like an extra rage in terms of damage and only gets better in later levels. Armor of Agathys can act as a stable opener along with rage if you don't get a heads up before combat starts. You get double the mileage with the temp hp too since you're raging. At level 5 you can Eldritch Smite if you take the invocation for it. The level 6 ability to get a specter is not limited by rage. The only thing is you can't be using Strength to attack if you want the rage bonuses like Agilemind said, but that's optional with melee weapon attacks. What's nice about this is you don't need a good amount of Charisma to make the build work.

      Not finished the video, but this makes perfect sense to me - Armor of Agathys should kick ass on a barbarian, it deals full damage when you're hit by some dude with a sword, and you only take half damage. Fantastic USE of the spell that you CAST before you rage and have no need to CONCENTRATE on. You're dishing 25 dmg each time, and you armor effectively has 50hp until it gives out.

  • @96Logan
    @96Logan 5 лет назад +53

    I will point out that a wizard with a few barbarian levels can come in handy. Sure, you can't cast or concentrate on spells while raging, but that's ok. You are a wizard. You stand in the back and go pew pew with spells. Bad guys know this so they try to jump on you and surround your fragile body. All you need to do is rage when shit hits the fan and you are surrounded. At that point, you pull out your great axe and forget you could ever cast spells.

Medium armor, bonus to str and con, extra hp when you cast an adjuration spell, proficiency with warhammer/battleaxe...or go Necro for minions to give you more chances for flanking and more attacks per round than a hasted fighter, plus finish things off with a necro school spell for the auto heal. Here's a fun one I like to call the Immortal: mainly Zealot Barbarian with a few levels of Celestial Warlock. A warlock gets invocations you can use, and celestial warlock gets a special healing ability that isn't classified as a spell. Zealot Barbarian eventually reaches the point where he can't be forced out of rage and can't die while raging, even if you fail 3 death saves. Takes a while to fully come online but it'll still make for a seriously tanky character along the way. By the time this build finishes, you can tell your cleric not to worry about you, draw all enemy fire, take enough damage to drop you below -100 hp, suffer 3 failed death saves, and then expend one healing die before your rage ends to avoid imminent death. And then if someone ever does kill you, the cleric can bring you back without material components.

    I actually sent an email about a very similar topic, building a barbarian + caster around the spell Warding Bond. It's also a 1 hour duration spell from the cleric list that bards could gain access to through Magical Secrets. It's about the only way that you could effectively stack resistance through the barbarian casting on another party member. The party member takes half damage because they have resistance. The barbarian takes the same damage actually dealt to the other person, but in 5e, all damage must have a type. And since the barbarian's resistance is separate from the other party member's, they get to half the appropriate damage types coming through the spell. Additionally, it helps with keeping that rage going, if the barbarian can't reach their target (flying enemies) and the enemy is focused on another party member.

    you glanced over wizards sooooo quickly as just "magic users" but i think you could have discussed much further the combo of a Bladesinger Barbarian, as Bladesong is not a spell, and boosts both your movement speed and AC. then later on being able to just burn a spell slot to absorb damage? a bear totem could go against a 20cr and spend a few turns just not taking damage at all! and of course at 14 getting to add Strength+Rage+Intelligence to damage! you are looking at a potential +12 damage to every swing! also Booming Blade is a cantrip you can cast, lay some beat down, and then rage as a bonus, and the bubble remains.

    it has some nice "cast before you rage" spells as well as some nice sorcerer giant soul abilities that add to it.

    I made a hulk/hyde type subclass for barbarian and have been itching to use it to really get it balanced. Uses a swap mechanic to make raging feel like your character has changed personality. I used a 1/3 caster table (eldritch knight) for the bruce/jekyll form so that you still have use while not raging. When you rage you INT and STR score swap.
    Barbarians of this path are either cursed or effected by some powerfull forgotten magics. Weak and timid in normal day to day life, but when they enter a rage thier personality flips and their bodies under go physical changes.
    FERAL BODY AND KEEN MIND
    Starting at 3rd level, when you enter a rage your body and mind change in drastic ways.
    While raging your strength and Intelligence stats flip.
    SPELLCASTlNG
    Use Eldritch knight table
    MAGICAL BODY
    Starting at 6th level, when you are raging you gain advantage on saving throws versus spells.
    MAGICAL MIND
    Starting at 10th level, when you make an ability check using intelligence, you can gain advantage on the roll. You can use this a number of times equal to your intelligence modifier per day.
    SUBCONCIOUS CASTER
    Starting at 14th level, you can cast certain spells while raging. You can cast spells that follow these restrictions. 1 action casting time, instantanouse duration, and must deal damage.
    WILL POWER THROUGH RAGE
    This replaces the capstone ability primal champion if the player wishs.
    At 20th level, your intelligence and constitution increases by 4 and your stat limit increases to 24 for these.

    oh, you guys didn't go into Barbarian+Warlock as much.. my favorite combo to shock DMs... xD
    I have two "builds" that I found enjoyable to use. First is the "selfish" one, with Bear Totem + Fiend - you essentially get resist to all damage and a buttload of TempHp per kill something - it does require a higher level (13) to pull off everything tho. The second one is the one i'm currently using, Ancestral Guardian + Celestial - you can protect your allies and heal damage while raging, pretty darn good combo.
    Also, in regards to Booms Blade is indeed great (eldritch smite anyone?) and Tome grants loads of out-of-combat utility - like every non-barb tomelocks. However the Chain is *excelent* as it allow your barb to have a pet for advantage without reckless, invisible scouting, see in the dark in case your race doesn't and, more importantly, the "gift of the ever living" one invocation (every heal dice on you is maximized) which combined with the barb resistance , becomes even more ridiculous.

    • @agilemind6241
      @agilemind6241 5 лет назад

      Booming blade is a spell you can't use it while raging. And frankly something has gone terribly wrong if your party is needing to heal their barbarian in combat often. And frankly familiars should be getting killed almost instantly if they start using the help action since it requires the familiar to draw attention to itself.

    •  5 лет назад +2

      I said nothing about booming blade, the "booms blade" refers to 3rd level warlock feature Pact Boom : Pact of Blade.
      Also, most warlock familiars have Invisibility, which allow the to use the help action and move out without triggering AoO against most enemies (as it requires sight). Also, this is just ONE of the several uses the familiars have.
      In regards to "healing the barb often".... it might happen, because my current party has no other frontline besides myself and we run deadlier combats - in the last several fights i run below 5hp in all of them and to 0hp in at least half of it.

    You're very much underselling the potential of a Barbarian - Celestial Warlock multiclass, particularly if they go pact of the chain and gift of the everliving ones, which maximizes all healing they get. Such a barbarian merely reduces Hit die from d12 to d8, yet gets to regenerate 6 HP per healing die of celestial warlock used. Combine that with armor of agathys and you have a lot of survival stacked together, that you can round out with utility spells (e.g. spider climb or invisibility).

    Now that the artificer is released, I feel like you guys should talk about a barbarian artificer multi-class. If you have the minimum needed intelligence, then you can go 3 levels in and pick the alchemist subclass. By doing this, you get two infusions and three spell slots. You get a shield and enhance the defense with an infusion giving you a +3 to ac. Then you infuse your weapon giving you a +3 to attack while raging. Now the real kicker, if you use spell slots to make elixirs, you can pick there affect, so with three spell slots, you can choose to have +1 ac with each elixir. In other words, with a shield and three potions, you get +6 to ac all while keeping unarmored defense. Of course, the elixir affects only last ten minutes so you would have to know when to use them, but if you know the boss will be in the next room and you just need to enter you can take them all right before entering and get +3 ac for sixty rounds plus one other bonus at random
    here are the effects
    1 Healing. The drinker regains a number of hit points equal to 2d4 + your Intelligence modifier.
    2 Swiftness. The drinker’s walking speed increases by 10 feet for 1 hour.
    3 Resilience. The drinker gains a +1 bonus to AC for 10 minutes.
    4 Boldness. The drinker can roll a d4 and add the number rolled to every attack roll and saving throw they make for the next minute.
    5 Flight. The drinker gains a flying speed of 10 feet for 10 minutes.
    6 Transformation. The drinker’s body is transformed as if by the alter self spell. The drinker determines the transformation caused by the spell, the effects of which last for 10 minutes.
    Number 4 would also really help in a big fight as well, so one of the elixirs could easily be used for that, or even the one random elixir you get for free might give it to you.

    I would add the Healer feat ability as a minor boon - "As an action, you can spend one use of a healer's kit to tend to a creature and restore 1d6 + 4 hit points to it, plus additional hit points equal to the creature's maximum number of Hit Dice. The creature can't regain hit points from this feat again until it finishes a short or long rest."
    I'm 10th level with about 65hp, so that would be 17.5 hp heal on me or someone else - this is like me casting a 3rd level cure wounds, so frees up a 3d level slot also.
    At max level, it's 27.5 hp heal without using magic, and same as using a 5th level cure wounds.
    Probably better at lower levels - level 4 heals 11.5 hp.
