Did We Accidentally Create Iron Fist in D&D Monk Paladin Character Build
This character build is inspired by Marvel Comic books Iron Fist Danny Rand. Not really trying to recreate that character, but I do believe watching the Netflix trailers have inspired me. So we delve into the players hand book to build our paladin monk combo that I am affectionately referring to as the Ponk D&D character build.

Oathbreaker Paladin with Sun Soul monk was my version. 11 levels of paladin with 9 levels of monk. He was a fallen paladin and sought monkhood as a path to redemption

For Paladin turned Monk, Vengeance and Tranquility would fit together in RP. Character started as a Paladin because they were seeking vengeance for personal reasons(murder of a loved one for example). Talk to the DM and around the level you want to start taking monk levels have you find and kill the person who you were seeking vengeance against.
Finding your goal reached but the emptiness in your heart still there, you look for another way. As time goes by and you find peace you begin to look at the world with fresh eyes and see that you gain new understanding of your oath. At this point you bring the abilities together and set out to right wrongs and protect the innocent.

Make him a paladin of a goodly God. His order serves under the direction of a greedy religious leader. He casts off his affiliation with the corrupt heretic, but continues to serve his god. He starts his own sect of truly faithful paladins who must take a vow of poverty. They are trained to fight for good without the interference of weapons or armor. Just a devout soldier and his divine might.
Badass back story with a built in nemesis, rival faction, political intrigue, and quest line.

I must agree with Dave, mountain dwarf is always the correct answer.
One way I see a paladin becoming a monk is a vengeance paladin fulfilling his oath, then committing to enlightenment. It could be done in a story arc up to a level 8-9.
Also I would allow a Four Elements monk to use their 'Disciple of elements' for smites.

@@cykonetic My Paladin/Sorcerer build is built for smiting with fists. Grabbed up to 11 levels in Heroic Paladin just for the smites, for fighting style I went Unarmed Fighting from the Unearthed Arcana, grabbed a level of Fighter for Mariner to keep him mobile and went Giant Soul Sorcerer the rest of the way for more spell slots, giving him more opportunities to smite.

Quick breakdown of the racial options Nerdarchy mentioned: Mountain Dwarf - not too bad. With 12+2 15 12+2 8 13 13 we're technically good to go, but with lots of uneven stats. Vanilla Human: 12+1 15+1 13+1 8+1 13+1 12+1 give us a decent base if low on racial features. Variant Human with a "+1 to a stat" feat can start with something like 13 15+1 11+1 8 13+1 13 (resilient con) otherwise the hill is gonna be steep. Half-Elf - 13 15+1 12 8 13+1 12+2 is doable though I wish we had more Con. Wood Elf - 13 14+2 13 8 13+1 13 isn't bad, it's even decent. Races that were not mentioned but can serve the build: Tortle 14+2 14 12 8 12+1 13 is the case where one can go Str Monk and even grapple quite effectively. Dragonborn 10+2 15 14 8 13 12+1 gives a palatable setup provided we bump Str eventually. We also qualify for Dragon Hide. Triton 12+1 15 13+1 8 13 12+1 just barely passes and allows for some fun amphibian shenanigans. Finally I'd like to put Half-Orc and Ghostwise Halfling up for consideration - the former grants us access to beefier criticals and Relentless Endurance (11+2 15 13+1 8 13 13 passes our multi requirements) the latter grants us Lucky and 30 ft of Telepathy (and 13 14+2 13 8 13+1 13 is a pass).
Keep in mind that we don't necessarily have to satisfy multiclassing conditions at level 1.
Incidentally it would be possible to dip Draconic Sorcerer at some point since it would allow for Dex prioritization. I'd even say it could be interesting, RP-wise, to play something like Draconic Sorc 1/Monk X. 13 cha alone is a lot easier to satisfy compared to Str and Cha 13. For instance, you may go Variant Human, start with 9 15+1 14 8 13+1 13 and take Mobile or whatever rocks your boat.

I like the idea of the "ponk", but I feel that it's slightly inaccurate. If I had to make Iron Fist as D&D character, I would say that monk/draconic bloodline sorceror would be a more direct adaptation due to the explicitly draconic origin of Iron Fist's powers. Flavoring spells like Shocking Grasp or Burning Hands to do radiant or force damage could solidify the build, assuming DM cooperation. The build still suffers from MAD, but it would be interesting to try out.

I'd go standard human with 14s in all but Int (which gets an 11). Keeping the build at level 10, taking 5 level of Vengeance Pally and 5 levels Open Hand Monk. Use the 2 ASI to boost Dex and Wis up to 16s. Now you have a respectable AC of 16, Extra Attack, D6 fists, pool of 25hp Lay on Hands (Mr. Miagi style), four 1st level and two 2nd level slots for Smites... which you try and save for when you crit (more likely with your vow of enmity), you can Stunning Strike and do all the great Open Hand Techniques with your flurry. This is how I would build it and seems pretty awesome! The only thing I think is wasted is the fighting style (which I don't think works with unarmed).

13:44 is why he should definitely be a noble. I love it!
I'm okay with a Daniel Rand character have Intelligence as the dump stat. He was away in Kun-Lun for a decade (15 years according to the Netflix series) so he wouldn't be aware of modern technology.
I like the extra smiting, but I'd rather have the more consistent unarmed damage of the monk. Plus, Iron Fist was only able to use his smoldering fist once per day for decades. It was more of a coup de grace until he joined the Avengers and needed to be more powerful to keep up with the rest of the team.
I will now have to make this character.

started coming up with backstory for a fantasy setting. Second or third son of nobility, (old noble tradition, first son is heir, second sent in service to the king or immediate superior noble, third goes to priesthood, paladin is a good mix of 2&3) sent off to train with the order at a young age he returns after completing his training to see his family before setting off on his first assignment.
On his way to his home he see's the squaller and degradation of the people on his family's land (possibly seeing some of his family's guardsmen beating a townsmen (your choice for man woman or child) for refusing to work.
On confronting his father all his father says is," where did you think the money came from for your training and armor?"
Aghast he leaves immediately casting aside his mace and armor as he walks through the village and into the night, never to return.
this allows you to explain your refusal to wear armor while also sidestepping those pesky rules for losing the favor of your god. Plus it adds some potential conflict you dm might incorporate into the story, when you run into your pompous older brother in the kings service.

I would personally go 11 paladin/ 9 monk because that would give you the extra 1d8 radiant to all of your attacks. you would also get immunity to fear and if you went devotion paladin like I would for this build you'd get immunity to being charmed. Your martial art's die would be a d6, but the amount of dice you would be throwing per attack would be higher without using any of those smites.

A couple of things: 1) What if your deity were someone like Ilmater from Forgotten Realms? You might want to be a more healy monk or just determined to soak up as much of the world's pain as you can (Monk of the Long Death? Lots of temporary HP to help you soak in the world's evil)
    2) The noble background still works for a monk minded build in that sure after his Paladin training, he just didn't feel that he was being devoted enough and so sought out unarmed combat instructors to teach him. He definitely has the money especially after selling off his armor and weapons. Think Bruce Wayne or even Elektra Natchios from the movie, her father didn't want her to be a victim so he paid the best martial artists to teach her combat.

Great idea, though by RAW the build is Multiple Abilities scores Dependant, and even if your GM allows multiclassing to and from Paladin with 13 dex instead of str, that's still three stats instead of two plus a decent Con would be ideal. Now, low level builds are doable imho (Pal 3/Monk 2, Pal 2/Monk 3 or even just Pal 1 for the proficiencies and Divine Sense) but higher levels are indeed where the money's at.

  • @VinhNPL

My version of Paladin/Monk is kinda weird, but i picked Halfling Lightfoot. Started as a sailor, his goddess is of the Sea and he wasn't in a setting where Heavy armors were common. I envisioned a sacred warrior more than a traditional western European knight. As for the monk part, i took it on land and with the same dedication to perfect his way of defending the cult dogma. All in all, it's an incredible character to play, and i did it despite a lot of negative reviews. Maybe it's not an optimal build but it's such a fun character.
Kensai or Open Handed are both cool. I will not go over the Oath level, considering the setting, doing so will just make him fell to the darkside, but will pursue Monk all the way thereafter. Vengeance seems more efficient, but i think Devotion or Redemption would be the way to go.
I really think having a sincere approach to the game with any character build works better than a mechanical beast. At least from a role-playing perspective. But if people play tactical board all day, well good for them and there's really nothing to add :)

    Paladin 5/ Kensei 3
    Criminal Background
She wanted to stop killing when she found out she was pregnant, ran, and was pursued by the order of assassins she used to work with. Culminating in the massacre of a god's temple during her wedding. She's still out to kill all the people who massacred her wedding party/unborn daughter, but after waking from the coma, she decides to make it personal by seeking out the legendary Swordsman who trained her former boss, to slay him at his own game.

If you wanted your "glowing fists" with a little less MAD, a single level in Cleric, Domain of War would get you the Divine Favor spell which adds 1d4 radiant damage to each of your attacks for up to a minute as long as you concentrate on it. Not the handful of d8s a Pally gets, but much more feasible, and still decent synergy with the Monk's many attacks. You'd also be much more sustainable.

another option could be putting in 3 levels fighter battle master. with the additional crowd control and superiority dice knocking an enemy prone and really waylaying into them while still controlling the battlefield to some extent. plus the them of using your inner strength to heal yourself a bit, or drawing into additional reserve power and really pelt down an enemy with divine smite, superiority dice, Ki, attacks and even knocking them prone unleashing all of your inner strength and hate. or adding the versatility to your character with using them individually from one moment to the next and practically dancing around a battlefield knowing you can treat every foe differently to better suit your needs as you can see your superior power of inner strength but your inner peace to conduct your foes in the way to best suit what you want. honestly it would be really hard for any NPC to gauge how this character will fight because they can do so much, not to say if this character where to Nova every chance they get that enemies are going to cannon fodder out your Nova before the big baddies come in because they are smart and don't want to be hit with a dozen dice worth of damage within 6 seconds.

Honestly from what I have seen over the all the characters I've built, I feel like 9 / 11 split is a good bet no matter what classes you're taking. I built Kratos the other day and did a 11 champion fighter and 9 Berserker Barbarian.

  • @harrywhiteley89

If the idea is smiting punches then you would most probably want to go either monk 6, paladin 6, cleric/sorcerer/bard 8 or monk 6, paladin 8, cleric/sorcerer/bard 6. The spell casters is to get a boost to the spell slots as you would end at either 10th or 11th this way, which is about the same as what the paladin gets if it was pure

    • @harrywhiteley89
      @harrywhiteley89 7 лет назад

But unfortunately even monk fists do not count as melee weapons so the entire thing doesn't work as paladin divine smite requires a melee weapon attack and monks use melee attacks... Still a nice idea if you can con your DM.

If you're taking a standard array, I think standard human is probably better. It would be 16 15 14 13 12 9, and you need a 13 in strength and charisma, or dexterity and wisdom to multi-class to either. So starting paladin you put your 14 in charisma, 15 in wisdom, 16 in dexterity, 13 (yeah i know its awful) in strength and 12 in con with a 9 int. Build for the monk part since probably the best way to play this is going to be more monk than paladin. as this build you get an ability score increase at level 4 of both classes, and at level 8, and 12. So if you go 9 paladin, and 11 monk, you get 4 ABIs, if you go 6 paladin and 14 monk you get 4 ABIs so it doesn't matter in that regard but you will have to decide what Feats you want. With standard array it will be really hard to be optimized while having good stats, i can foresee wisdom and dexterity being the only 18's and the main feat you get would be Mobile. +2 Dexterity, To get wisdom to at least 18 you have to at some point do a +1 / +1 split between two scores so if you don't like a negative intelligence modifier or you wanna slowly beef up Constitution that's the way to go. Then later on you will put the +2 in wisdom leaving you one ability score increase to get Mobile or Dexterity / Wisdom to 20, I'd take Mobile.
If you're doing the standard 27-point buy then getting 13 in the 4 stats takes 20 points, leaving you with 7 points to do not much with, thus making you pretty much worse off in the long run.
Your best bet is to roll at least 2 16's with 4d6. Ideal level 1 stats i would want as this build would be 16, 16, 14, 14, 13, 10
Pretty above average but it covers your bases. If you do get this array then you could be a Variant Human for Mobile, and beef up Charisma and Dexterity with those +1's. then at level 4 beef them up again each with +1's so that when you hit level 6 paladin your saves will be AMAZING. At that point your scores would look like: 13 STR, 18 DEX, 14 CON, 16 WIS, 10 INT, 16 CHA with at least being level 4 in either class. Moving on up you can choose to get Dexterity to 20, Wisdom to 18, or Charisma to 18, Constitution is incredibly important but this class has too many stat requirements as it stands so having higher than a +1 is amazing. doing the 11/9 split you'll have 9 d10 hit dice and 11 d8 hit dice, and if you roll very well you won't be incredibly squishy while having high unarmored AC.
The only Feat I think is mandatory for this build is Mobile. It's just TOO good to pass up, especially as a Monk of any type. That being said Tough, Resilient, and even Lucky are incredibly beneficial (Tough being my personal go-to, my level 10 (1 life cleric / 9 favored soul sorcerer) with Tough and currently 18 CON has 123 hit points so i'm no slouch, so don't sneeze at the power of 40 additional hit points.
As was mentioned you're better off using a Simple weapon or Shortsword with the Dueling fighting style for this build, but to capture the Iron Fist in you, weapons don't mean shit. That being said you can opt for Archery to have some ranged weapon potential with something like Darts (which are monk weapons) just in case you cannot get up to your enemy for whatever reason, but for Min-Max Dueling is really the only option.
This is all without taking into consideration any magic items you could have that increase your Ability Scores or items like Amulet of Health (which makes your Con 19) etc., nor is it considering any custom item your DM has for you. With non-magical items, and the standard array you're looking at 18 AC, well over 100 hit points on average, 60 base speed, +2 to all saves with Aura of Protection (Paladin, 6th level feature), d8 Monk weapon / martial arts die, level 3 spell access (with the 11/9 split, 14/6 only gets you 2nd level slots) for smites or utility, anywhere between 11 and 14 Ki points. Downside is that if you go Human like i said above, without any items you won't have Dark vision, which is a real pain in the ass 9/10 times, and if you go Variant Human your ability scores would probably be harder to manage. Half-Elf is probably way better for the Standard Array version of the build but in the end it's really up to you as a player.
Did I look too far into this? O_O

I'm arriving late to the party, but with a potential idea I believe could be cool.
Monks are usually portrayed as the wise-men-on-the-mountaintop, but they can also be more Street-Fighter-Kung-Fu-esque.
As far as a 20th level character, what I see potentially being cool is a Dragonborn: 12-level Open Hand Monk, 8-level Frenzy barbarian. They don't need armor: Their skin is the armor. They don't need weapons: they are the weapons. Strength and Con highest scores, followed by Dex.
This means the Monkzerker can Rage (get Str bonus for unarmed strikes). Flurry of blows attack (1 unarmed strike, 2 more as bonus action), and then use the Barb 5th level Extra Attack and do the same thing (a total of 6 attacks, unarmed). And this could be done at level 4 (3 monk, 1 barb).

    • @Reapor234
      @Reapor234 7 лет назад +1

The Wanderer the most attacks you could get would be is 4. two from extra attack and two from flurry of blows. doesn't matter what level after 7(that assumes 5 barbarian and 2 monk. could be 6 if you do monk 5 barbarian 1.).
frenzy barbarian attack uses a bonus action, and flurry of blows uses a bonus action. you only have one bonus action per turn.

    That's a nice combo.
The problem is the fighting style, duelling does'nt work with unarmed style, defense does'nt work without armor, there is nothing that works really...
Personally, I'd go for radiant monk for this build (you did'nt mention it but I guess you're planning on a vanilla monk).
Radient would be thematic, plus it gives option.
Also, because you don't have a free sun bolt spell attack as a bonus action you would not "miss"a free bonus attack while casting/controlling hunter's mark. You can go hunter's mark +sun bolt, then fire 4 sun bolt using a ki point on the next turn to maximise damage without loosing on the action economie.
The character would also be less one note. With less risk to burn everything on a couple of flurry of smite.
Having two option, sun bolt+hunter's mark and unarmerd smite would allow some flexibility dealing with both minion and bosses...
I'd like to know how this build does because it is an idea that I had and dismiss for lack of class synergie.
I was mostly afraid to have too few smites to be worth the level investissement, well that and the other synergies issue like the wasted fighting style etc... but the concept is so cool that i am really curious.
( And for those that wan't to emulate that feel of mana fist in another way : eldtrich blast + crossbow expert or how to "punch" with 1d10 force damage up to 4 times an action. A great way to make a melee warlock without beeing unfaithfull to the trinity eldrich blast-agonising blast-hex)

I think dueling requires a melee weapon [not fist] and defensive requires armor [not unarmored defense]...The only [non-UA/non-Homebrew] option for fighting style I see working here is Mariner unless I'm missing something.
