What a great video. For those of us who grew up in Chicago we loved Vienna. Now I know why this factory is amazing!! You see the fat they are trimming off the roasts to use. No wonder they taste better than any other sausage.
The original Vienna hot dogs (Wieners, actually known as Frankfurters in Vienna) are not made with just with beef. The secret formula dating back to the 1805 is made with pork and veal and/or beef. They have a much more refined flavor than the stronger tasting all beef hot dogs, as anyone who's had them in Vienna well knows. The story behind this sausage goes all the way back to the early 1800s. The recipe was originally invented by Johann Georg Lahner, born in 1792, who was a butcher trained in Frankfurt. He eventually moved to Vienna to get a job and was employed by a well established butcher shop until he was able to get a loan (from an aristocrat) to open his own business. In 1805 he produced the first "Franfurters", which he named after his native city, using pork, including bacon and by adding some beef and/or veal and spices. Although they're still called "Frankfurters" in Vienna (Wien, in German), everywhere else (including Frankfurt) they're known as Wieners (Viennese), or Wiener Würstchen in German. Most sausages, Wieners etc in Europe are not made with pure Beef, this was a Kosher variant , especially common in the States, because pork is obviously not Kosher. The casing of the original Wieners is always natural, as with all pork sausages.
That was awesome. I miss these so much. After twenty years living abroad, I visited home and went to Portillos. The hot dog made me cry. Beautiful childhood memories. Amazing to see the factory. (I’m looking for a way as a cook to approximate the Chi dog in Argentina)
An excellent video! Thank you! I grew up in Hollywood, CA. We had a place called The Dog House on the SE corner of Hollywood & Vine. The owners made their hot dogs exclusively with Vienna Beef Natural Casing frankfurters. When The Dog House closed down, I lost my favorite hot dog. 😢They don't sell them in Fresno, where I moved to, either. 😥 I can buy them on Amazon, but if I wanted a Vienna Beef dog today, I'm SOL. Maybe you could wield your power and influence to get them to ship the Viienna Beef natural casing frankfurters here, to California.
I'm 52 and never had one of these hot dogs. Also I never saw a dog with that stuff on it. I know everyone is different but dam sure looks good. Thanks for the video. I am a chili and cheese hot dog guy. But I will try this brand and setup minus the pickles.
Being originally from New York I certainly do love my Sabbrett hot dogs and Nathans to some degree but I do love Vienna beef Chicago Dogs as well. I think I might like the Chicago dog slightly better and I am from New York but, I am honest too. I now live in Arizona and have lived here for the last 29 years and I also do like the Sonoran Hot Dog. I was reluctant at first because I was stubborn and biased but I gave it a chance and I enjoy it too. You can find great hot dogs all across the United States that all come in different forms. I was open minded and glad I was. If you want to check out a cool video on the Sonoran Dog, check out this Mexican immigrant who is considered the Godfather of the Sonoran dog. ruclips.net/video/TXOLeZGcbC8/видео.html

AMEN. Vienna Beef or none at all. I miss them being in Texas.
I worked in an Eckrich hot dog plant in Michigan; and can say. Honestly we used quality meat product. No weird fillers. Pure beef. Pure pork.
The Midwest makes the best food!
@@boogitybear2283 Agreed. I love Johnsonville Sausages (who are based in Sheboygan Falls, WI) and I'm not even from America.
