This demands an immediate follow-up episode by covering the Italian corridors on the NW and W side of the city where Nottoli and many others have been thriving for decades. Let's go, Adam!
I was born in Little Italy... They broke it up... We ended up moving to what some refer to as Li'l Tuscany. 22nd & Oakley baby! Home of some of the best mom and pop owned sit down Italian Restaurants that are going on a century old. Sadly, as those restaurants are still there, the funeral parlor (mom ...rest her soul) is gone. Our friend Danny's family owned the mom&pop Ace Hardware... that's all gone. St Michael's church and grade school looks destroyed. When the Italians finally say "goodbye" to the Church...there's no turning back. So, sadly our neighborhood on the West side is also gone. (except the restaurants...they are still there) Thank you for doing this video. I actually got emotional watching it. -Giovanni ✌️
Is Febo's still there? I moved to Frankfort in the early '80's and then to Indiana and really miss the food! I have traveled the world and I always say there is no better food city than Chicago - New Yorkers and Bostonians don't know what they're talking about! HAHA Chicago has the pizza, subs, hot dogs, everything!
Yo guys. I'm super grateful/stoked that you guys love the video so much. Just a little announcement so you aren't in the dark... It's getting cold here in Chicago which makes backseat eating quite unpleasant for these food crawl videos. We're going to take a brief pause in this style of video for a few months until it warms back up again. DON'T WORRY THOUGH! We WILL be back at it with a number of other Chi food crawls with special guests as soon as possible. Hell, I might even eat my words and run one during the winter if I'm feeling like it's possible. Just wanted you to know. THANK YOU FOR WATCHING I LOVE YOU KISS KISS HUG HUG! Seriously though. Thanks c:
You Just couldn't do better in the '80s and 90's than Vernon park. Fontano's, Carm's, Great American deli, Al's Original beef, Hawkeye's, Tuscany, Rosebud, Conti, and uncelebrated but truly great Patio! (Italian beef and hot dogs, the best fries I have ever had!) Mrs. Fontano was about 5'2" and when she spoke, the whole place jumped into action. I'll never forget being in Great American deli when two UIC kids walked in asking if they had anything for vegetarians. The place had dried meats hanging from the ceiling and was next to NeAgora, a Lamb butcher!
Your videos remain so damn addicting. Also, I’m a damn Italian Sub freak. So this one really hit home. D’Amato’s is my favorite right now so I’m so psyched to see you adoring what they do. 🔥
27:15: Adam himself said that this is the best of the 312 (area code). Adam, we ABSOLUTELY need a Part 2 (or even Part 3 or more) that covers the 773, the 708, the 630, and every other Chicagoland area code.
Fun fact: Bari used D’Amatos bread in the past. D’Amatos seen the success Bari had with subs so D’Amatos started selling subs too. Bari wasn’t too happy with that so they switched bread companies. I think Bari still has the better sandwich.
100%, I agee with every thing you said. Love the Bari Hot Italian sub. Back in the day I would get cookies from next door for my dessert. Stopped going once the stabbed Bari in the back.
Franklin Park, suburb of Chicago, has my current favorite Italian sub at AL and Joe's. Hit most of those places in Chicago and Bari's hit the spot for me. You won't be disappointed at any of them though.
Great video and love that you are putting some of the great Chicago small businesses center stage. I'm adding these to my list of places to visit when I'm in the city. The West Loop has been evoloving over the past few years and the food scene is great. Keep up the content.
27:15 -- Adam himself said that this is the best of the 312 (area code), so that just means he needs to do a Part 2 that covers the 773, the 708, the 630, and every other Chicagoland area code.

There's a place in Madison called Village Bar. They put a thick slice of brick cheese on the burger patty on the grill, put an ice cube by it, cover it, so the cheese steams on the burger. Literally one of the best burgers I've ever had. Brick cheese is special. Now that I am living in New Orleans, I miss being able to get it easily.
some of ur food is better tbh, chicago has a lot of options but some areas are lacking (japanese and indian) and a most of our acclaimed food is v heavy! california has better asian food and food w actual vegetables
Used to live a few blocks from D'Amato's & Bari. I was always a bigger fan of Bari subs, but I was living there when Bari stopped using D'Amato's bread. It was a neighborhood scandal! Great video!
We are absolutely spoiled with every kind of food in Chicago. Traveling to most other places that aren't bigger cities leaves a void in some ethnical food standings. Anything you can ever want is less than 30min away usually.
never seen Adam's videos but he got some real legends in this video. Jim at JPG's is such a nice dude and D'A'mato's is some of the best daily bread I've had in my life. Lmao I paused this before he spoke and had no idea he used their bread too, plus they all support each other on IG and stuff. Anyway, shout out to Adam helping showcase some of the best business owners in the city. Cool to seeJoseph, next generation and all class. Especially because generations did have to pivot like JPG since years ago you bought in bulk for big families, he made the move to more subs years ago and has really worked hard at leaning into it. I wish everyone single one of these places the best, RIP Fiore's Delicatessen.

Wow, watching this totally makes me want an italian sub now -- even tho I literally had Conte Di Savoia subs for lunch yesterday and dinner on Tuesday (Italian and The Rosie) as well as Fontano's last Thursday. Been eating Fontano's regularly for years, but I don't know that I've ever noticed the "Italian Special" (maybe cuz it's #6 on the menu?), as I usually go Wiseguy or Big "L". Anyway, great video, keep up the good work!
Ever since I became for financially stable, I always wondered what cool places I could eat at in Chicago. Thanks to your videos, I tried new hot dog places and Italian Beef ones. They were so good! Now to try out your pizza, Italian sub, and other recommendations as well. Thanks for your videos and keep up the great work!
I made The Basque cheesecake early this morning could not wait overnight but it came out to perfection. could not believe how much adding that manchego improves the taste. that custard texture is amazing and I used a dessert wine over the top. I think it actually is less preparation and baking time than a regular cheesecake. and I usually let my cheesecake sit up too. so overall, I think it was actually easier than a regular New York style cheesecake and tastier. and I make a pretty darn good cheesecake but this was Superior
I grew up in New England, and got my first italian at the Amato's in Portland, Maine on India Street back in like '76 or so. Same place my dad, grandfather, and great grandfather all got theirs. It is a very good sub, and many claim they invented it. All that said, the sub at Graziano's looked perfect to me. The bread, the meat, the veg, all perfect.
Great job but you need to hit the suburbs as you missed Alpine food shop in elmwood park,Al&Joes in Franklin park which both use imported provolone on their subs. All the places you went to all changed their recipes with adding Giardiniera to their subs as it wasn’t an original item on the subs. They all went cheap with using the domestic provolone then using the original imported provolone which gives the sandwich the unique taste
Very fortunate to live within walking distance of Conte Di Savoia and Pompei and I love them both! Every now and then I’ll go to D’Amato’s for their Italian sub and they have phenomenal Italian cookies. Shoutout to Frankie’s Deli out in Oak Brook Terrace, IL! Worth the trip out that way!
These videos are awesome Adam! Keep up the good work, I'll probably never go to Chicago, but knowing how you guys do it right let's us assimilate these foods at home in southern Oregon!
How did Google know I was missing my hometown today? Born & Raised in Chicago - now in LA - Missing Aurelio's Pizza & Italian Subs! Their subs are served HOT! Sounds weird but AMAZING! (Yes hot lettuce 🤷♀️) & Google was also tempting me with Chicago Italian Beef Sandwiches from Al's! And I'm missing Polish Deli's! And an actual Irish Reuben! Sigh
When I lived in Chicago, I noticed Italy was all over Chicago; yet no "little Italy" to be found - that I knew of. The history was unknown to me at the time and I appreciate you going through the history of the neighborhood and what Mayor Daly did as it was unknown to me until now. One question sort of off topic to the video: there was this great butcher I remember visiting that was near Second City. Had GREAT Italian Sausage we would buy to cookout with. Any idea what it might be called because I am forgetting?
FINALLY. People need to give respect to the Chicago Italian sub. It's not a sandwich without giardiniera. I miss JPG's every single day, the absolute king. Vinnie's is an absolute sleeper, love the addition of balsamic. There’s nothing like going to D’Amatos the days before Christmas when I’d pick up some cannoli. It’s absolute chaos. Fontano’s has the wildest clientele. I once saw a VERY Italian-American man with an ankle bracelet on. Conte absolutely fucking rips, too. They have a great selection of hot and cold cuts. Apart from Publican and Tempesta, every single one of these places were on my rotation.
Little Italy is not, and has not been, on Taylor Street for decades. Since 1991, the officially designated Little Italy by the City of Chicago is on the far NW side. It’s where the majority of Italian Americans live (beyond far more in near west and near NW suburbs) and you’ll find many mom and pop places, Italian spoken more regularly and great food, it isn’t a touristy area but where locals know.
I like the number 1 choices in the video, but worth mentioning is North Buena Deli in Uptown. It has an amazing Italian sandwich! Surprised it wasn't on the list here, but these were great ones as well.
I’ve lived in Chicago for a number of years and as an Italian, I’ve had to try most of these subs and they’re all fantastic! My only complaint is that they all close by 5-6pm making it tough to find a good Italian sandwich after a long day of work - weekend treats only…
I moved to southern Michigan for a year. There, I was exposed to hot giardiniera for the first time. I was using it in everything. Rice dishes and probably a lot of things most people don't use it on. After I left and moved back to Kentucky I searched every grocery store in the city trying to find some and I still have never seen it. That was about 20 years ago. Someone could probably make a lot of money putting it on a jar and selling it nation wide. It's really not in a lot of places. And every person I exposed to it, loved it. Seriously. People would ask me what it was. When I told them, they started buying it in the jar to put on sandwiches and other dishes.
I come from Detroit, where the submarine sandwich was invented, I remember it being on an Italian loaf, layered with provolone cheese, pascuitto ham, Genea salami, mortadella, red onions, sliced tomatoes, lettuce added later, and pepperacin
Love the detail and objectivity in your review. Really helps to separate the different choices available in one of our best neighborhoods for authentic Italian food! If you ever decide to head north of the city check out Fausto’s bakery in Arlington Heights. They feature delicious Italian sandwiches on bread they bake themselves. Delicioso!
As an Sicilian American this video sings to me. Moving from the North to the South at a young age, there are so many benefits and disappointments that come with it.
Yeah, your videos are bitter sweet😅 it’s a love-hate brother. It’s so hard to watch you eat all this bomb food, but you make such awesome videos. And I can’t wait to get back to Chicago this year. I now have a hell of a list to choose from 😌🙏🏻 thank ya sir. Keep it up

The Chicago giardinera and a good sub dressing are a must on Italian subs, or really on any subs for that matter.

One question sort of off topic to the video: there was this great butcher I remember visiting that was near Second City. Had GREAT Italian Sausage we would buy to cookout with. Any idea what it might be called because I am forgetting?
Classic! Wish I knew these locations when I lived in the area in the early 80's. Yes, I'm old but you are wonderful with your content.
Apart from Publican and Tempesta, every single one of these places were on my rotation.
those sandwiches look amazing :)
Happy to see Grazianos and Fontanos made the list. Fontanos at least once a week. ❤
Im starving and live in Chicago im going to get an Italian sub from the first shop ! Looks absolutely delicious ! Thanks guys .
Conte Di Savoia is my absolute favorite Italian Sub😋😋😋🤷🏽♂️
Good video guys!!!
I come from Detroit, where the submarine sandwich was invented, I remember it being on an Italian loaf, layered with provolone cheese, pascuitto ham, Genea salami, mortadella, red onions, sliced tomatoes, lettuce added later, and pepperacin
my sister used to live around the corner from Conti Di Savoia. SOOooo good!!!
Conti Di Savoia is my absolute favorite hands down🤷🏽♂️😋
Love the detail and objectivity in your review. Really helps to separate the different choices available in one of our best neighborhoods for authentic Italian food! If you ever decide to head north of the city check out Fausto’s bakery in Arlington Heights. They feature delicious Italian sandwiches on bread they bake themselves. Delicioso!
Thank you for this!😁
As an Sicilian American this video sings to me. Moving from the North to the South at a young age, there are so many benefits and disappointments that come with it.
Another great video! I always get italian subs when I go to a sub shop…. the best!
Did not expect a video about sandwiches to be so damn entertaining.
I grew up in the Chicago land area. Moved to Indiana and miss the pizza and subs so I opened my own restaurant.
@jamesspeelman2765, to what part of Indiana did you go -- how about some self-promo here and tell us about your restaurant and where it resides?
Yeah, your videos are bitter sweet😅 it’s a love-hate brother. It’s so hard to watch you eat all this bomb food, but you make such awesome videos. And I can’t wait to get back to Chicago this year. I now have a hell of a list to choose from 😌🙏🏻 thank ya sir. Keep it up
JPG! I miss working in the west loop. Whenever I have folks in town I hike em over to JPG for lunch. Such awesome nice folks in there.
I agree with your top 2 picks. publican didn’t impress me at all. Rex is really good
ENJOYED. Thank you.
North Buena’s Sicilian is my go-to
