I'm 50. Slim straight and slim fit jeans, button down and button up shirts, and dress shoes have become my daily outfis. Thank you for all the advices and tips.
I just discovered vintage knit polos thanks to you. still trying to figure out loafers, there seems to be a fine line between casual upscale footwear and old rich dude and I haven't mastered it yet.
Thanks Jamie! That’s pretty subjective, but the ones I showed in the video are from Ace Marks. There’s so many different brands out there, with a lot of different price points. Allen Edmonds is another solid brand.
This is a topic that hits home for me. I wear jeans about 95% of the time and I will start to incorporate some of these styles into my wardrobe. I know that brown tends to go really well with denim and if I go to an event with jeans, I'll pair it with brown accessories.
I'm 73 years old. I bit on the "husky side". What do you think of the "Hawaiian style" shirts, mixed with jeans or khaki pants?? Not necessarily the loud color shirts, but just that style. I like the comfort of the shirts and the fact that they don't need to be tucked in. Especially like them for cruises and resorts. Just looking for another opinion. Perhaps an idea for you for an upcoming video. Thanks for all of your hard work on your videos. I enjoy your videos and opinions very much.
LEGEND. Great video on jeans! I especially like the part about trying different colors. I have black, dark wash blue, medium wash blue, gray and white. Yes, white! #Legend
Another great video. I am big fan of dark denim jeans. You dress them up or down. Great with sneakers, boots etc. But I have few medium dark jeans & black & brown. Thanks again for another great video #Legend
my favorite Jeans were Lucky Brand....Until, I tried a pair of Hugo Boss Maine Jeans!!!!! I was lucky to find some online at a discounted price a couple of weeks ago...BEST jeans for me!!!! and since I don't have a "beer" belly, I like to pair them with some slim fit untucked style shirts ( either white or black) well...I am 52 yrs old
Excellent video!!! I was on the search for the perfect jeans for my body type. Years ago I discovered Bonobos. They have a shorter inseam available, an athletic fit, and finally- something worked perfectly without a trip to the tailor. I've moved to a jeans and t-shirt under a light sweater guy. Lot's of options. T-shirt in grey or black to contrast the sweater (v-neck or crew). On some days I'll break out the shirt and tie, which combine beautifully with a pair of dark jeans. I got a pair of old, scuffed up cap-toed boots that add a ruggedness to the look- my wife like them, so that's all I need. But then every few weeks, I break out a suit and everyone is floored. Great to have options.
I love wearing jeans a Chino’s…. Another great show mate, you are making great videos , also appear to have a great life. Keep up the good work mate… Cheers
The paring jeans with shirts is what I'm working on now in my wardrobe. Great tips as always John. Your content and channel has the best advice for guys our age that I've found. Keep it up.
Thanks for the suggestions especially the bold colors to match the jeans. Some food for thought for spring shopping. Also the shoes work well and I need a new pair😀!
Just watched this and found it informative!! I wear dockers a lot and just came across an awesome olive pair that I had tailored so they fit great; I can pair them with a black sports jacket, but I wanted to know what you thought on a color shirt for this ensemble? I guess I can go black, but people think I’m Johnny Cash.?? what are your thoughts on a color shirt with olive pants and black sports jacket?
Great tips. One frustration I have is wearing pants other than jeans that fit me properly. I'm muscular and have huge calves so most chinos are skin tight around them then bunch up above the knee! And suggestions?
I don't wear jeans, but every piece of this advice also works for chinos and tech pants. For boots, I've found that oxblood/burgundy is as versatile as brown (and it's a highly underrated color in shoes & boots).
Can't go wrong with a great pair of jeans, and an absolute essential in both men and women's wardrobe. Although personally, I'm delighted that skinny jeans are not as prevalent these days. Most men probably hate them, but you can't argue with the comfort of a loose mom jean, lol! Legend
Great video John! This has to be the best channel for older gentlemen. Question: some outdoor gear channels provide links for the equipment. Would it be possible for you to do likewise for some of the great, distinctive pieces you feature? Without creating a lot more work?
Great ideas John. I have a question, sometimes it’s hard to find the right inseam for my jeans, is it okay to roll up the bottoms? If so, is more than one roll up okay?
I would suggest getting the length right, or having them hemmed at a tailor, but if you need to cuff them, cuffing with boots is a better look. It’s all personal preference really.
Hello John. ***Legend***. Thank you for a great video! I wear jeans about 50% of the time. I always try to wear a casual long sleeve or dressier shirt. I like those shoes that you showed. Besides tennis, I do wear brown tone casual shoes or boot type shoes. It makes a big difference on how it looks and how I feel. Always looking forward to your next video. Thank you! Stay safe and have fun! Cheers.
Awesome video. I love monochromatic outfits. Always my comfort zone clothing. Blacks, greys, dark blues and burgundy are my usual choices. I have several bomber jackets and shirt jackets that I like to layer when cooler weather is here. Keep up the great content I’ve learned a lot! Legend!
I guess it depends on who you are in the health of your feet. I think both are comfortable, but Cole Haan uses a more athletic soul on some of their sneakers, so some would say that’s more comfortable. I wear Thursday sneakers all the time, and never have the feeling that I need to take them off.
Great video as always. Now I have a question about hats I am about to have shoulder surgery and won’t be able to style my hair for a few months any hat ideas ball cap vs flat cap?
If you're a *100% casual* guy, baseball caps are probably a better option. Flat caps are more versatile. I'll wear a linen flat cap with a t-shirt and shorts. I'll also regularly wear a tweed flat cap with a dress shirt, sports coat, and dress slacks.
Thank you both. This is gonna be a weird one it’s gonna be button ups and joggers and a hat for a few months with slip ons I am trying to adjust by looking on Pinterest for combo ideas any suggestions would be great thanks in advance
@@mjjenkins8678 If you have joggers that are in a solid neutral color (charcoal, navy, brown, etc.) with no logo, those might pass for tech pants at first glance. Particularly if you tuck the laces into your waistband. If I was limited to slip-ons, I would wear my Chelsea boots or loafers for dressier occasions. During my 20s, I broke my foot and was in a walking cast for 6 weeks. The only pants that fit over the cast were my sweat pants. I was amazed by how many people managed to overlook that I was wearing sweats with a dress shirt, *and* miss the off-white cast sticking out at the bottom.
I picked up some blundstones and thursday boots. I like the blundstones a lot better as they are far more comfortable and look pretty masculine in my opinion. I wear the thursday boots when I need a dressier style though
John, great video content and it’s impacted how I think about over 40 mens fashion. Your tips have encouraged and given new hope. Even my som in the 20’s make comments like, Dad, your are looking awesome 👏 My 23 year old son also asked for a pair of new white sneakers like I was wearing, thanks to some of your past videos!
Legend. I'm so grateful to have stumbled upon your channel. I'd like to recommend FIDELITY Denim to you and your viewers. For our demographic, their JIMMY / SLIM STRAIGHT, Size 34 fits me perfectly. Curiously, so does their TORINO / SLIM, but in Size 36. The other models really don't fit us older guys. Stretchy and soft, they are comfy, like pajamas. Nordstroms/Nordstrom Rack carry these in store and online. Also direct from Fidelty. I'd hit them up for sponsorship. Next on my shopping list - trying to find the light blue blazer you wear in your videos. Thanks ever so much for sharing your expertise. 🙏
Hi John respect that you are a kind of guide for older guys..I am in my fifties but Still fashion addicted and love the better brands mainly designers. The clothes you showed in your video’s are for me too common and mainstream but helps allot of men in my age I think.Clothes look good and better when you look good and when youre in a good shape.
Thanks for the advice 👍🏻 But dark brown shirt with blue denims..looks awful but that's me, whereas the light brown shoes go very well with blue denims, by the way these days I wear denims 7 days a week! 😂
Big follower and love your content. You make everything very simple and easy to understand. Always struggle buying jeans and takes me days.... and never satisfied even after I get them home. Love the slim/skinny fits and they look really good, but always loose from the waist and hugging the thighs! Never sure if I should go a size bigger or smaller. 🤔 and this happens with almost any brand I try.... Levi's, Zara, jack & jones, etc....
Love your videos, John!!🥂 I think jeans rolled up with a light sweater for spring (or fall) and paring it with some Birkenstock's is a nice casual look for a daytime playtime with friends! Also, you did a video a while back saying older men shouldn't wear jeans with holes in them and I politely disagreed. I do think you should reconsider because I think it's a look and done right I'm not mad at it! 😁
Very nice dress shirt there John. As we on the northern hemisphere are entering spring, this is the perfect time to switch out those dark blue or black denims to some other color. Alternatively you can put on a brighter t-shirt or dress shirt. But if you like me have somewhat of a dad bod, brighter denims/trousers is a better option as brighter cloth items brings focus to that body part.

I hate jeans. They are uncomfortable, the fabric is too thick and it is unforgiving for people with less-than-perfect physiques. And let's face it... most men over a certain age are going to have one or more of the following: skinny legs, flat ass, wide hips, "front-butt" and other deformities that are only magnified with jeans. And at some point, jeans just look desperate, as if one is trying to look hip. I say embrace your age and wear something stylish, flattering and dignified. You may have aged out of the jeans game without even noticing.
