Big thing is BE IN SHAPE. Don’t be overweight, don’t be underweight. Clothes are great, but the foundation of good appearance is physique. We need to get the diet dialed in, we need the lean mass to body fat percentage to the scientifically healthy standard.
My wife's Real Estate team (all women, most over 50) had a get together yesterday. As the night was winding down, the conversation ended up being about spouses (who were invited but there were only 4 of us men) and several of the women remarked how I was always well dressed and put together. They specifically mentioned how I looked at the time, basic shorts and a button down. What really impressed them (although they didn't realize it) was that my shirt matched my shoes...yes, I used the "Sandwich Method". Way to go John! #LEGEND
We all love compliments, especially from the ladies… But here’s the real test of self-confidence: can you feel good about yourself without outside validation? Reaching that point where you trust your own taste and judgment above all, regardless of what others think, is the ultimate fashion statement
Perhaps I didn't make the point I was trying to make. This wasn't about me seeking compliments or confidence. I subscribe to this channel to get information and suggestions. John made some in this video, I tried it and people noticed. My comment was more about John's content than my need for validation.
I’ve been watching your vids a couple months now which helped me buy some summer clothes…nothing expensive…and recently my friends commented “you look like money, you are looking so good”…the details make the difference…thanks for the great advice
You are the consummate male fashion whisperer. So much, if not all you recommend, is classic which means it will last beyond trends. Gentlemen, John knows of what he speaks.
I find it fairly easy to look better than most other guys -- care a bit about how you look/ dress and use a mirror, stay fit...you're pretty much there.
Great advise! My husband looks great after listening to your videos. Proper fit is so important! Clothing that doesn’t fit should be passed on to someone else.
I am that mid-forties guy who needs to get my act together when it comes to fitness, haha. That said, even with a bit of a dad-belly, I can’t give up a classic white or blue oxford cloth button-down. To me, darker colors for those are less traditional And just a little out of my style preferences. Here’s a tip though - put on a darker outer layer such as a V-neck sweater, cardigan or sportcoat. Then you can enjoy that classic white or blue button-down and still draw attention away from those less flattering areas. Thanks John! Really enjoyed this one
Yes, and this is only something I’ve noticed as I’ve entered my mid 40s. My damn feet are stretching out lol. Not as much of a problem with lace up shoes, since you can just go up a size to get the width you need and compensate for any looseness by tying them tighter. But with slip on shoes like loafers, it’s much trickier. I don’t suggest spending lots of money for the sake of it, but I’ve found that when it comes to dress shoes, the higher end stuff tends to work better. For example, I tried about 12 different Brands and styles of loafer before I arrived on a pair of Alden LHS Penny loafers that actually fit my weird feet like a glove
Thanks John for another great video. Your suggestion about getting your temple (your body) in shape is spot on. Three years ago, I was flirting with 190 pounds (I am 5'11" tall), and decided to change, so I went to a functional medicine doctor, learned about good nutrition (organic vegetables, grass fed meat, supplements, etc.), and today, I weigh 169 pounds (I weighed this in High School, I graduated in 1969, I am 73 years old!!), and am feeling great. I also stopped drinking about 3 months ago, and giving up that sugar allowed me to go from 180 pounds to my current 169 pounds. My clothes fit better, it is easier to work out (I do 20 minutes of yoga each morning and walk at least 1-1/2 miles per day), and if I can do it, anyone can. I urge the guys to find a good functional medicine practitioner, it will amaze you what they can do to help!! Thanks for all you do!!
Awesome John. All your top 10 tips all rolled up in to one easy to watch video. Colour wheel, sandwich method, shoes for the right occasion etc etc all in the one video. It’s great. As you say, follow this advice and look better than 90% of the men you see on the street or at the mall.
I actually recently used the color matching thing to renovate my room, especially where tile, ceiling and wall color was concerned, and it turned out absolutely beautiful, so it goes beyond clothing, absolutely helpful.....OK now I need to go shopping and buy a classy sneaker and a piece of decadent chocolate cake to reward myself ❤ 😄
Thank you for acknowledging the ‘ shirt-tucked-in look again……of course, better with dark colors……any color if fit. Have also been tucking in lately as well. Loved the idea of dark shirt with lighter color summer trousers. 🎉✌🏻👍🏻
John I haven’t seen you in person since the meetup in Temecula 10+ years ago. I have maintained my look and fitness since the early days of following your advice when you had a few thousand subscribers. I’m 70 and most people think I’m in my fifties. Generally I do look better than most other guys. Not bragging, just saying your advice is on point…Thanks
You're absolutely correct about being in shape! A physically fit man will make a simple outfit like a pair of jeans and a white T-shirt look like a tailored suit! Tucking in a shirt with a big belly just isn't visually appealing. All you're doing is bringing attention to your big belly.
John, so right! i have a larger upper body, and see that light colored shirts make me look top heavy. Most of what i'm buying now are dark shirts and it helps a lot.
Great video, John. Working on the fitness, but back to back Rotator Cuff surgeries took its toll. I'm looking for a light-weight sport jacket. I've looked locally and really not finding anything that I liked. Is there a good online source you would recommend?
Just accidentally found your channel and liked it instantly. Was looking for something like this for a long time. Great tips. Not sure if you already have it , but anyways requesting if you can make a video with style suggestions for Asian brown men.
Great video, good tips. And I guess I’m a unicorn… I’m 58, better shape than when I flew in the Navy in the 80s and 90s and look good shirtless at the beach 🎉
Funny, I went for stone coloured chinos today and was deciding on either sky blue or dark blue shirt. Both work obviously, but opted today for dark shirt. My influence was although I would normally wear brown shoes with this I went for some blue boat style shoes I'd just bought really well with the shirt.
You recommend utilizing the sandwich method, which is great. Also recommended is dark shirts and white shoes. Those things don't go along with the sandwich method.
Like it's been said - the number ONE thing you can do to look and feel better is not be overweight! If you are sittin' proper on the BMI scale, you will feel and look better! Even the best looking clothes are going to make less of an impact if you are overweight. Don't fool yourself...
Love your vids mate. I always feel too puffed up with the tucked shirt / polo ~ unless it’s a suit, shirt etc. I try to buy Oxford cut shirts, so they don’t look like a dress 😂. That said; I’m usually ~ jeans and t and maybe a long t shirt or windcheater over (winter); good pair of wheels, a nice watch and the Chanel Allure / Bleu de Chanel to seal the deal! I do get compliments from the ladies; so I guess it kinda works. 🇦🇺
Another helpful video. To you last point, a few years ago, my wife & I were in a nightclub in the Gulf region with friends. In there were multiple others, both men & women, dancing & having fun, as you do. We noticed one guy in particular, likely retired military, about my age (early 50s at the time),dressed in a loose, untucked shirt with baggy shorts (with obligatory cargo pockets). This style (such as it is) was somewhat popular in the 90s. But in 2018, on a 50-something guy, attempting to dance with fairly attractive young ladies, it really did not work. Guys, don't do this.
Oof. He could be a totally nice, decent guy, too. People just don’t know until they come across this type of information. Hell, and until about a year ago, I was mostly wearing T-shirts, jeans, sneakers and hoodies - and I’m 45 years old. My wardrobe has since dramatically transformed, now containing oxford cloth button-downs, polo shirts, chinos, corduroys, dress shoes and only some of the nicer T-shirts and jeans
John, do you have different rules on tucking for pants versus shorts? I tend to tuck my shirts in when wearing pants but leave untucked when wearing shorts.
@40OverFashion European and middle aged myself, simple rule: pants tucked, shorts untucked. Easy. But you're right, no shorts under dress shirts too long or with slits on the sides. Semi classy casual summer outfits are evident: fitting khaki or any pastel colored shorts, and a nice polo or chambray/cotton/linen shirt, in a matching color like you said.
I’d also like to add that most of us men over 40 are established in our lives and probably have more disposable income than we did in our 20s… So stop shopping like a 20-year-old! You don’t need to buy everything at Target anymore. You can afford that Ralph Lauren button down or that pair of Alden Penny loafers. I’m not saying you should be hyper brand conscious or just buy expensive things for the sake of it, but as you explore more premium brands, you will find that they fit better, feel better, look better and last longer. Treat yourself sometimes
Does ‘terrace’ style clothing not translate to the USA ? Also although aspiring to warm weather clothing is at the forefront of our minds this time of year, in Scotland it’s been wet windy 10 degrees Celsius tropical summer ( spoiled I know) this last week or so n colder in evening 😀
I’m not sure if I’ve posted this comment in the past; but: Can someone explain to me why clothing manufacturers, particularly American Eagle, are designing XS shirts for men that stand 6/2. Again, extra small size for a 6/2 man. Are manufacturers advertising the emaciated look? I am 5/2 and weigh 111lbs. There used to be a time when xs sport and dress shirts fit nicely. Now, they look like night shirts; and I’m relegated to kids’ wear. Sorry for the whining, really.
Right? It makes even a 25-year-old guy looks slouchy. That clothing is strictly for participating in exercise, not any activities outside the gym. I don’t know why so many guys are so lazy now with their style but it’s disappointing
Here's a simple tip that makes a huge difference; Stop wearing tshirts everywhere and replace them with collared polo style shirts. I get so much attention if I'm wearing a nice black Polo Brand shirt also. Ladies. I'm not a piece of meat. Okay?
Drinking too much when we get older is really bad, man. Not only does it contribute to weight gain but it hammers your liver and can hasten cognitive decline
What is the definition of bring in shape? BMI under 25, 6 inch drop vs. Shoulders/waist 1.6 (never going to happen)? Top 1-2 % seems way too high for 50+ guy just being in shape. Yes the median stat is pathetic. Still there are a significant number in the top 15% that skew the average and make the top standard to be very tough.
if funny am 48 , and magority of my friend or men i see my age , are wearing athletic running shoes , t shirt or hoody , cargo shorts , or cargo pants , and puffy jackets in winter , and don t think any of them has a proper jacket or shirt or iven pair of derby , only thows that got marid have 1 suite they have wear only once , at ther wedding ,
Sadly, that is the majority. I’m 45 years old and only in the past year or so have I actually started refining my wardrobe. Before that, about the nicest thing you’d find in my wardrobe was a target polo shirt or maybe a gap cotton crewneck sweater. Otherwise, jeans, T-shirts and sneakers all the way, with hoodies and ski jackets for outer wear. I’ve made huge strides since then and can’t believe I relied on that clothing so much in the past
Style is never outdated. Fashion is. The reason older guys dressed like in their college days look strange: Grown ups shouldn't dress like college kids! Athleisure? Hell no! I wouldn't care about my clothes while working out in the gym. But wearing gym clothes when not working out? What's wrong with people?
Thank you. The laziness of so many grown men, especially here in America, is staggering. No self-respecting man should be walking around in public in joggers, athletic sneakers and a hoodie. How can so many guys have so little self-respect and present themselves in such a slovenly way?
There is no clothing company that makes shirts or pants in perfect proportions. Except for the tailor. And then only for YOUR proportions. YOU determine the proportions. Your body proportions are not mine. And what is the "right" one is in the eye of the beholder. There are no "proportion rules". Personally, I would say that your advertising partner's shirts are too long for YOUR proportions.
Whether off the rack or tailored, proportion is certainly a real thing. Not sure what your point is. Further, there are some things that cannot be fixed by a tailor, such as the shoulder width of a structured jacket, so there are some measurements you need to get right from the get-go
Personally I just don’t think black and tan go that well together. The conventional wisdom is that you should not combine black and brown, and tan is basically just a light brown. I know some people choose to subvert that fashion rule, and that’s fine if done well, but for most of us, I think it’s there for a reason. Swap the black shirt out for a navy shirt and you get the same contrast but with a much more harmonious look
@pensivepenguin3000 It was relevant to something said in the video, and just my personal opinion. Unlike your reply, which is completely irrelevant, not to mention totally unnecessary. Find something better to do with your time than being a troll
I definitely agree that a proper button-down and chinos or slacks is always a safer bet, but never say never. It’s all about how people pull it off. I could see a well fitting pair of dark blue denim jeans pairing nicely with a more casual medium gray sportcoat, for example, maybe something with patch Pockets, which tends to come off as a little more casual
Hello this is just an opinion ok How long dou you have with the same look I believe it's time to change your look The beard and the hair make you look older Change that beard and change the way you fix your hair
@@noName-kn1lx nonsense. While the trendiness of facial hair might come and go, a well groomed beard is always perfectly acceptable. Besides, what kind of style influencer would he be if he was so weak minded that he just listen to what random people in the comments told him to do? That’s no channel I would follow
@@noName-kn1lx i’m not a beard guy myself, but I still don’t understand your point. What exactly is wrong with some guys choosing to have facial hair? It’s a thing some guys have done for centuries. It can be done well or it can be done badly, but that’s up to the individual
Big thing is BE IN SHAPE. Don’t be overweight, don’t be underweight. Clothes are great, but the foundation of good appearance is physique. We need to get the diet dialed in, we need the lean mass to body fat percentage to the scientifically healthy standard.

You will never be stylish as long as you are obese. Not mr olympia but a normal weight
Yeah mate; I agree … and abs are built in the kitchen at the end of the day … Train hard ~ Fight easy .. who dares , wins 🇬🇧

Amen. I’m 59 and I got serious and lost 44 pounds. I’m back to running three miles a day. You can do it!

Yeah. Literally wear anything other than sneakers, jeans and hoodies and you’re already ahead of 99% of them lol
Doing something with the shape/weight is very important. Is not just a thing of looks but if we get to live a healthier life I don't see why not.

Great video, John. Working on the fitness, but back to back Rotator Cuff surgeries took its toll. I'm looking for a light-weight sport jacket. I've looked locally and really not finding anything that I liked. Is there a good online source you would recommend?
I prefer to look locally. Online is OK, but nothing beats trying things on in person before you buy.
My friend, ask a physical therapist or look online for low impact exercises. You can still do a lot while working around your injury.
Just accidentally found your channel and liked it instantly. Was looking for something like this for a long time. Great tips. Not sure if you already have it , but anyways requesting if you can make a video with style suggestions for Asian brown men.

Sure... 55 myself, still 75kg for 1.80m, since decades. But you gotto admit, the shape of your body changes with the years and not for the better.
Thankss for the video.. simple yet informative 👌 definitely got kudos

Well done!

You are also probably in shape. I'm just guessing, here. If so, good for you.
Well said, John!
Thank you, good video.
Thanks for watching!
Athleìsure has to be fitted or slim fit. No questions asked.
And only worn when actually training or working out. This is not a substitute for actually dressing properly when in public

John, do you have different rules on tucking for pants versus shorts? I tend to tuck my shirts in when wearing pants but leave untucked when wearing shorts.
Yeah, it’s sort of a 50-50 thing. I’ve just been doing it to try it out. It’s a lot cleaner looking, but you can take it or leave it.
Don’t wear shorts. Shorts are for boys, not men. In warmer months, go for a lightweight cotton or linen pant much more stylish and refined
I’d also like to add that most of us men over 40 are established in our lives and probably have more disposable income than we did in our 20s… So stop shopping like a 20-year-old! Cuts is great but I really like Bylt basics as well. Pretty much all the same stuff but personally fits me better. A bit less expensive as well.
The bar is so low today with men that any real effort puts you far ahead
True!
Yeah, I’d say that bar is pretty much lying on the ground at this point lol
I do want to go for a little dress!! John, what are you saying??? Ha!! Only kidding! Great advice as always.
Haha!

Tucking my shirt in. I can't wear a shirt that can't be untucked. Parents made me do it and the military completed it.

Black tops are a great idea, unless you have dandruff and then they become a total embarrassment.

👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻
Those skinny pants are not really happening...
Further, there are some things that cannot be fixed by a tailor, such as the shoulder width of a structured jacket, so there are some measurements you need to get right from the get-go
If you’re over 40 years old, and Caucasian, don’t wear the black shirt with those beige chinos, you’ll look washed out.
Depends on your skin color. Dark skin Caucasian’s can pull it off.
Hot take, but 90s grunge guys r hot ngl
Um, ok? Not sure if that’s a hot take as much as it seems to be a totally irrelevant take
@pensivepenguin3000 It was relevant to something said in the video, and just my personal opinion. Unlike your reply, which is completely irrelevant, not to mention totally unnecessary. Find something better to do with your time than being a troll
@@roxytocin_216whoa lol. Relax. You act like I insulted your mom or something
Mmmmm sandwiches 🤤
Don't wear a suit jacket with polo shirts or blue jeans. Looks so naff
There was a time you would never have recommended the sponsor’s clothing. I get it, those cars ain’t cheap😅.
Hello this is just an opinion ok
How long dou you have with the same look
I believe it's time to change your look
The beard and the hair make you look older
Change that beard and change the way you fix your hair
He really just looks like a healthy guy, not trying to look like a kid
Beards are getting way past their sell date
What’s wrong with a 55-year-old man looking 55? Much worse to try to pretend you’re still 25, which ironically makes you look much older than you are
@@noName-kn1lx nonsense.
