I appreciate this review! I've been looking for a new 'quality' lighter, and with so many out there it's difficult to know where to start - wish there were more lighter reviews! Thank you!
You're very welcome! More to come!
Nice to see you again Paul.
Thank you!
Cheers - Paul
I’m not sure I would’ve been able to endorse this lighter if in your shoes Sir. You made several references to owning more than one that was problematic with one currently stuck in the black hole of warranty service pending for a year. I’m not at all convinced it’s the value added luxury item it’s been made out to be.
Same... Pretty lame for the price... 😞 Will likely get a Xikar instead...
Have you ever used the Maxijet? If so, what do you think of it?
Are you using the ST Dupont red gas? Or some other butane?
Hi quick question for you. Which brand butane would you recommend in lieu of Dupont brand (as that is near impossible to find here)? Great honest review. Thank you!
Thanks! Xikar, Colibri, Lotus, and Newport are all solid butane brands that we'd recommend.
@@Bespokeunit Thank you for the info. About an hour before your response I tracked down some Dupont brand butane locally. But good to know I can use the other brands as I have those already as back up. Thanks again and great videos!
@@wwolf5670 Fantastic, great to hear it! By the way, it's worth noting that Dupont lighters have a proprietary valve shape so not all butane bottles will work. You can buy adapters but it's worth making sure that it'll work with your lighter before you buy!
@@Bespokeunit Good info. Thank you. I do have those little blue adapters that come with the Xikar butane. Hopefully one of those will work if I run out of the Dupont.
I have this and for some reason it's leaking gas now... I have lighters on rotation and this one recently just leaks gas right out not sure where to service this HELP!
Reach out to ST Dupont! They have service centers in the US (if I'm not mistaken). Also depending on the age of your lighter, it may be covered by their warranty.
So when is the new vid uploading, dude?
Have you looked HUGO btw? Should I invest?
Hi Vania,
The next written review is already on bespokeunit.com - otherwise, the next video will be out on Tuesday!
All the best,
CP
I have the same lighter on the way. Your review has me a little worried now. I don’t plan on having a few of them….
Hopefully, it'll be fine! If properly looked after, it won't let you down.
Lol, this is why you never go looking at reviews immediately after making a purchase. Always going to find some negative information. That said, I appreciate the honesty of this reviewer. While I do not own this lighter, I do have many highend accessories/toys that I love regardless of the pain I've gone through to deal with issues like these. Sometimes you just love it, even if it's a pain in the ass.
Before filling it up make sure that the tank is completely empty, put the lighter in a freezer for 15 min., then it gets completely full with liquid gas, without bubbles
We've yet to try that freezer method. However, for the price you pay with these Defi lighters, one would expect that this wouldn't be necessary.

I love the maxijet.. this one is too huge for me 😂😂
agreed on the china point... they sold out
Yeah, it's a bit of a shame.
It's only the ignitor unit, and they're obliged to disclose it. The rest of the lighter components from the jet nozzle down to the lacquer (on the variants that have it) are manufactured and assembled in France.
Well, I had to return 4 bronze and 3 red ones back to the store I bought these.
My opinion? ST Dupont charges a ridiculous amount of money for a cheap made in China product, that they didn't even took the time to QC it.
I am sure the production cost is less than $10-15 and they charge more than 10 times this, for what?
You just pay for the brand name!
I am extremely disappointed from this product and I can see others have similar experiences.
If you ask me, spending $150 online will buy you 5-6 lighters that will keep running for years.
@@illkickyouinthenuts I agree with you. I have a couple of those Daytonas and they work like a charm. Less expensive than the Duponts and more reliable.
Seriously these lighters are terrible , I’ve gone through three of them and last one has just stopped working!! I ‘ve just replaced it with a COLIBRI DAYTONA , which in my opinion is practically the same but at a fraction of the price. All ST DuPont lighters should be made in EUROPE and for £200 is ridiculously expensive for a cheap China lighter that malfunctions in under a year.
Hey Terry,
I definitely think ST Dupont could do a much better job with the Defis quality-wise, however we haven't had as many issues as you describe. This being said, when they work, they work really well.
Rafael
European brands devaluing their product line by mfr in China and making low level lighters. No different than Mercedes and their entry level vehicles. if you run out of well heeled consumers.... Make a cheaper version but you lose some cachet
over valued cheap lighter
No bing no chi ching 💵 from me!
What's the 'bing' you're referring to that's missing here?
Rafael
@@Bespokeunit the iconic St. Dupont lighters (Ligne line), when you pop open the top it does a loud metal ding sound, that’s basically the majority of the point of buying an ST. Dupont. Everything else is like buying an electric Harley Davidson bike without the motor sound .
@@frankv7068 Makes sense now, Frank, thanks for explaining! Having never used a Ligne lighter, I quite like this Defi, though I can see how my mind could change after getting my hands on a Ligne. I'll keep the "ding" sound in mind for when I do.
