Been testing the waters of Toon Boom this past month, and as a Flash animator, goddamn has it been rough. These videos couldn't have come at a better time! Cheers Jazza (and Colin)!
It is really interesting how a hand full of effects can add so much to the animation. The sun glow and the glow in the monster make the monster look kind of 3d. Awesome video.
Am I the only one laughing at all the Flash users complaining that ''it's too expensive'' yet Adobe Animate is 240 dollars a month with the older versions being 600 on most shopping sites?
eheh Ashley is right, i subbed to Jazza long ago just to learn how to draw, and because i like his way of explaining things, even just watching the process with any program i wont mind...i just wont be able to do it myself tho xD
TreshToons is it not possible to download it for free? For sure you will find the way on youtube... althoug this program seams great.. I'm stiking to flash for the moment
Ok, everyone is complaining about how Jazza is changing and not working with flash any more and using this new expensive software but hes not he is simply giving you a different tool to try out and advertising for ToonBoom and his friend. Also, Harmony 12doesnt cost that much, atleast Harmony essentials doesn't its actually a good price, I mean $180 for a year is pretty good and you can still make top notch quality animations with it so I would go for that. But i guess since iv'e never been a flash user like you all it is easier said than done just my opinion.
jarvon cobb dude 180 dollars for a year is very much :P I dont think I can buy a program for life for that much :/ I am not saying I'm poor, I'm saying my country is poor :P in my country with 1 euro (or even dollar) you can buy allot of stuff , I think that my digital tablet doesnt cost that much. I wanted to support soo many of these great artists and youtubers but sometimes money is just not enough . I am just saying this for you to know that there are crappy countries like mine
Sofronija Sharlamanov Isn't that reversed? Like in my country everything is so damn expensive because our currency's crap and inflation. If the products in your country is cheap doesn't that mean that 1 euro has more value than the dollar? Besides, I think it's expensive because you are buying the license to use this software to make animations which you make money off of and is your intellectual property.
ChaosDragon 1999 Yes I mean when you get money that is something but it allso matters how much you get and if you even get that much I mean if I was to buy a program like this it would be for joy and crating something new and then share it , but I wont get something for it :P becouse lets say I work another job which has nothing to do with this what should I do then ?
I'm testing out the Toon Boom trial currently, so hopefully Onion Skin's magical tutorials can help out with that. I've been using various versions of Flash for the past 10+ years, so hopefully I can make a decent transition with Flash being ingrained in my brain for so long. Here's hoping!
I've been using Flash for over 8 years and this program blew me away. I would have absolute no problem moving over to this if it wasn't so pricey. If you get Essentials then it isn't so bad really but I'd at least try to get Pro.
mike knite If you really want to develop and plan to use animation for a long time, toon boom. If just for a hobbym more leaning towards flash, but it gets annoying to pay the monthly subscription. So just get Harmony essesntials. Harmony = More professional Flash = geared towards hobbyists, but not really serious.
If you plan to collaborate with others you want ToonBoom. The information set that is the Palettes can be used by each artist. Swapping drawings and using the same Libraries is also something ToonBoom does easily. This huge benefit to staying on model. If you think you'd like to work with studios, they use ToonBoom.
Long explanation incoming, but Jazza has a history with Toon Boom on this channel, and recognizes its power, but I think he is A LOT more comfortable with Flash: Jazza has explained over the past few years his reluctancy to switch from Flash(now Animate) to Toon Boom. Some of you may be aware, but Adobe Flash had a bad connotation with businesses and others thinking that it was just used for "stupid flash animations" and even Apple made the first iPhone unable to use Flash Player(highly controversial and almost completely killed Flash, the program AND the medium). Because of this, many Flash users went the way of the industry standard Toon Boom(which is just fine) but when told to do the same because Flash was dieing, Jazza tried about 3 times over the years and thought the user interface was NOT beginner friendly AT ALL. Recently, Adobe then rebranded, and completely revamped and updated Flash into Adobe Animate CC and I believe Jazza himself will stay using Flash for a long time coming, because now that Adobe is updating again and heading in a right direction, he has always expressed wanting to stay with what he has been using for MANY years. Do NOT feel bad about switching from or staying with Flash! I am a musician mainly myself, and there are huge debates on which music software is better and like Flash and Toon Boom, there and pros and cons to each, and I think when they rebranded from Flash to Animate, they adopted A LOT of expected industry standards to make the program more up to date and comparable to Toon Boom these days. Both are quite powerful, you see Toon Boom's power here, and Flash's power in Jazza's videos. It's the amount of time you invest and the way you use the tools(and work around the cons) of each that makes a quality piece of work!
I got as far as Animate Pro and gave up. But maybe I should look again. Toom Boom has this female "instructor" (I forget her name) who normally does an excellent job on their YT channel. However, when she got deep into cut-out workflow (it's called "puppets" right? Should be simple!), it was *_SO_* involved that even *_she_* became confused at certain points. Also, I think the example she was using included "nodes" as well! *_Arrgh!_* I do welcome their addition of deformer rigs, but MOHO 12 does a really good job there, too. And while not as capable as Harmony, they are at least somewhat simpler. And cheaper. Still, a great overview, and I will definitely sign up over at Onion Skin!
As a Graphic Designer, i can't help but like the Onion Skin Logo up to the point where that odd hexagonal shape borders it. Should try a more round shape for the positive space, just a suggestion.
Flash should have updated loooong ago after macromedia flash but did nothing for 12 years until the recent Adobe animate. Toonboom focus more on animators preference and if you are a really good animator, you would tell the difference once you experience both software
I was getting so aggravated with the vector tools I was about to give up the idea of picking up toon boom. I had no idea there was bitmap tools. I just don't understand why pretty much every animation program is in vectors though. Maybe its cause Im not used to them, but its a major challenge getting used to them for me. It just feels like vectors fight you.
I'm thinking about buying this because I just got a SHITTON of money. Except I also have to buy a bunch of other software so, complications, complications. Loveable Psycho
Since I'm on a budget, I did some research on the features that come with the version I can afford, Toon Boom Harmony 12 Essentials. I discovered that it's okay but the version you see in all the ads is Harmony 12 Premium. Which is almost $2000. Essentials is decent but it's designed for people who don't know jack-shit about animating. I'm not that kind of animator. I'm looking into making animations that are as high-quality and complex looking as possible with a low budget. Essentials has basic cut-out and paperless animation. It isn't as fluid as Premium since the animation's limited in movement due to simple vector tools. Sure, it has multiplane backgrounds but I'm already doing the same thing for MUCH cheaper. I also need more experience if I'm ever going to buy this. Since I'm still learning. So I'm going to buy Flash CS3 or CS5 instead. I'll get almost identical results to Premium, I'll learn more, and it's cheaper. Loveable Psycho
I've only had Toon Boom Harmony Essentials (I know he's using premium) for a couple months and I've like, only ever seen character rigging animations on it out there XD I've always been frame by frame animating with it. Heck I've only just discovered camera movement, effects, and key frames XD
I'm not sure if this was answered in the video, but can you animate with completely drawn frames, or better yet, have a hybrid between that and the deformation rigs?
I'm new at animation too, I'm starting with flash and is going smooth with a few tutorials. That's how I end up here in Jazza's Chanel. Im using flash CS5.5 , Illustrator CS2, Photoshop CS3 and Inkscape as tools for my animation. I hate the pen tool in flash for drawing that's why I'm using AI and Inkscape for vector image and PS for rasters or bitmaps.
I recommend practicing art as well, and get into figure drawing, it helps massively for animation. As for software I'd recommend flash, because it can basically handle most hobby animation, toon boom studio is also good, and is one time only payment so that is a really good beginner choice
Am I correct in assuming this is the premium version of the program? In general though this is exciting! I was planning on trying to learn Toon Boom this summer, so I look forward to using Onion skin and your channel to start me out.
a question for Collin is one that i have run into when i hit that harmony brick wall is , i use mouse mode when drawing with my small wacom manga tablet (small pen space) but harmony is seems to be wired to use pen mode any idea how to change that ?
how do you import a video into toonboom? And i already went to file>import>.mov but then it never gets to the progress bar of it converting the video to images. HELP!?
I wonder if you are seeing the Drawing view, which only shows one layer, versus the Camera view, which shows all? Check out Toon Boom's user forums and tutorials, as well. Faster answers to get over your starting questions, than come to these artist's channels to see TB in motion.
Hi. I make some Flash animations to. Not your level ofcourse :D I wanna tray toon boom to. But my PC is old. How big defferent is toon boom studio and harmony? And can you make more toon boom studio tutorials?
Studio was an incompatible program to the higher-end TB programs and was phased out. Harmony Essentials took its place. This level does not have X Sheet, but can export to the more enabled versions of Harmony.
Can you make a video in flash that shows us how to make flash anamtion look 50s cartoons like the filter the qaulity tried to mKe it look like it but I failed lot
I would start with Flash if I were you. There is tons of tutorials for flash compare to TB. Is a good way to start animating...once you master flash than it will be a good idea to jump to TB.
Goku Sorry to be the spanner in the works even though I was the one advertising Toon Boom here, but from working with many animators I've found that those who start with Toon Boom have a much nicer time picking it up than those who start with Flash and change later. The Essentials version is cheap and does everything you need
You're very welcome, and VannyARTS was right that there are more tutorials around for Flash but... well, that's why I started a channel, feel free to send me a message with any questions if I haven't already made a video on the subject =]
sorry if you answered this in the video don't have time to finish it right now, but can you add sound to the animation from the software, or would i need a 3rd party?
Does "sound" mean lip-sync? Because TB does a pretty great job automatically, and its even easy to fine tune that by swapping out drawings. But, if you mean EFX tracks like foley, and a music score, you're going to have more control doing a mix to pix style workflow. Lock your animation, then Export out of ToonBoom and do your audio editing in a video program like Premiere, iMovie or Final Cut.
Yeah, in fact anime studio is so good you see it all the time in professional shows, and 2D animated movies... Wait a second... That's harmony I was thinking of
Matt Berg-Cody That's cause they get a kickback from the company. You might as well say that Nike is the best shoe 'cause that's what the pro's wear! I'm saying that it's comparable and less expensive than toon boom. When you're starting out as an independent, that's what you look for; Function and price!
I have a question, not sure if anyone here can answer it but i bought and have been using toon boom animate 3, and i see that i can upgrade to toon boom harmony advanced for like $276. if i upgrade will that mean ill have harmony advanced forever or will i be paying for a subscription that will eventually run out? i dont want to have to keep renewing harmony if i do upgrade from animate 3.
Paying for upgrades in software is where the artists who design the software are paid from. When I upgraded from Studio to Harmony, I was very surprised they let me keep the Studio license. Usually companies erase the old license when an upgrade's initialized. I thought this was generous of them.
bitmap drawing starts to get pixelated when you zoom in, while a vector drawing always has the same quality whether you zoom in or out = 0 quality loss
A Vector drawing is a description of a line as it appears between two points. This description includes alterations to the line by a curve or an angle, and a description of the color used. This is why a vector can be copied, or scaled up or down, and not lose its clean shape. Drawing that same line in a bitmap program, describes color as its expressed in each pixel it passes over. This is why the bitmap file size is larger.
Nguyen Do Flash, Anime Studio and Toon Boom Essentials are the three main competitors and all about the same price these days. But that can still be a couple of hundred unless you go a subscription. I'd say give each of their trial versions a go and see what you feel most comfortable with
Onion Skin Do any of these software allow for drawn vector/raster tweening? I remember reading about a cartoon (I think it was Futurama) where only a fraction of the frames were drawn and the rest were solved with computer tweening. I want to experiment with rotoscoping 3D-animated armatures but as simply a hobby I would not be able to spend any reasonable amount of time committed to it with the frame rate and art style I have in mind.
Onion Skin I mean like can you tween a whole hand drawn raster/vector character or a part of him using master key-frames with the computer filling them all in, i.e. Hand-drawing a character's expression changing with 7 frames (frames 1, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30) then having the program solve the other 23 frames?
There's definately a drop in the feel as most users implement it. I hate that Frankenstein look, too. But using the Deformer brings some fluidity back to the rigs, as does the Inverse Kinematics feature.
Still seems to have the whole mediocre dragging pictures across the screen animation, especially with those arms of the monster, will admit it does have some useful tools for effects.
Been testing the waters of Toon Boom this past month, and as a Flash animator, goddamn has it been rough. These videos couldn't have come at a better time! Cheers Jazza (and Colin)!
I have worked with Harmony for years and I have never ever had the idea to overlay the same glow several times x) brilliant idea! Thank you!
It is really interesting how a hand full of effects can add so much to the animation. The sun glow and the glow in the monster make the monster look kind of 3d. Awesome video.
jazz have you made any progress with harmony?
Am I the only one laughing at all the Flash users complaining that ''it's too expensive'' yet Adobe Animate is 240 dollars a month with the older versions being 600 on most shopping sites?
adobe animate is 24 dollars a month, but i like toonboom better.
Comment number 6! xD Jazza you are Awesome! Seriously awesome! You seem so busy, but you still give us content. Thanks man!
More of Jazza trying toonboom!!!
i understand that the software is really usefull and stuff, but hell..just like adobe , so expensive :S
I know right?! I subbed to this channel for flash, because I have it. Not to buy new expensive software ):
TMC MarCodeRed Lucky that all the tutorials will be on a separate channel then, eh? :p

Toon Boom so great, unidentified publisher for Mac. Way the go!
The Curve Deformation tool is a incredible tool for cut-out animation

Either a cheap alternative or piracy, I suppose.
Holy Crap, ToonBoom looks far superior to Flash. What have I been missing out on?
alot.
Wow, Jazza! Very great video and I never realized how lovely your eyes were :D
I'm testing out the Toon Boom trial currently, so hopefully Onion Skin's magical tutorials can help out with that. I've been using various versions of Flash for the past 10+ years, so hopefully I can make a decent transition with Flash being ingrained in my brain for so long.

Flash is just a bunch of shapes moving around
Hey Man- Great tutorial.
I've been struggling to make this jump (even after purchasing the Application).
This helps- will look at the onion skin next.
I've been using Flash for over 8 years and this program blew me away.
I would have absolute no problem moving over to this if it wasn't so pricey. If you get Essentials then it isn't so bad really but I'd at least try to get Pro.
so what is the difference between flash and toon boom? and in your opinion which one is better?

you could just buy an old version of flash on amazon if you don't want to pay for a subscription or just get clip studio paint ex

That was a kick ass intro...thanks for teh upload
Yeah I'll try toon boom like later on in my life. It looks interesting. :)
I got as far as Animate Pro and gave up. But maybe I should look again. Toom Boom has this female "instructor" (I forget her name) who normally does an excellent job on their YT channel. Pizza God That change has been on the todo list for a little while. Maybe I should get your approval when I do :P
If I switch to toon boom I'll feel like I betrayed flash.
Flash should have updated loooong ago after macromedia flash but did nothing for 12 years until the recent Adobe animate.

its buggy
Going to give this a try.
seems pretty interesting

so ready to get the software omg
Have a great day :)

If you're looking for something cheap that has a lot of the basics, you could also try anime studio. I have it and it's pretty good.
I recommend practicing art as well, and get into figure drawing, it helps massively for animation. As for software I'd recommend flash, because it can basically handle most hobby animation, toon boom studio is also good, and is one time only payment so that is a really good beginner choice
Hooba Animations Flash is great, definetely get a drawing tablet, they help alot.
Am I correct in assuming this is the premium version of the program?
In general though this is exciting! I was planning on trying to learn Toon Boom this summer, so I look forward to using Onion skin and your channel to start me out.
Jkdabomb10A Yes he's using the premium version as he states in the end of the vid.
You should host an animation challenge with a Toon Boom lisence being the grand prize
Looks nice, but can you use like a 5 sec. Frame by frame like something from flash?
What one should I download? Beginner, pro, or expert?
Can Toon Boom Harmony do the same things as Adobe Animate CC?
I LUV U JAZZAAA
Hey Jazza can you make a ‘Top 5 free animating softwares’ please!
are you thinking about leaving flash and doing your work on this program?
oh yes this will help me for my toonboom exam ;-;
a question for Collin is one that i have run into when i hit that harmony brick wall is , i use mouse mode when drawing with my small wacom manga tablet (small pen space) but harmony is seems to be wired to use pen mode any idea how to change that ?
How would you compare this to TVPaint?
how do you import a video into toonboom? And i already went to file>import>.mov but then it never gets to the progress bar of it converting the video to images. HELP!?
Combination of After Effects, Flash and Photoshop?
i need help it wont let me draw when i start the software i check if there was anything wrong with the layers but it looks fine i dont know what wrong
+karla michelle Did you press the brush icon the left?
I'm a Flash animator, but when I watch this Video, its time to switch!!!!
Which toon boom is it, is it essential, advanced, or the most expensive versian
Are you Jazza going to see Eurovision Song Contest on Saturday?
I'm new to toon boom and whenever I draw something on another layer it is not all visible when I use multiple. How do I fix this? Thank you
I wonder if you are seeing the Drawing view, which only shows one layer, versus the Camera view, which shows all? Check out Toon Boom's user forums and tutorials, as well. Faster answers to get over your starting questions, than come to these artist's channels to see TB in motion.
How many layer can i use in essentials?
frank summers channel is pretty good too.
Is there anything i can use besides a mouse to draw on a computer
toon boom not allow me to draw how to solve ? please help me.
You may be in a workspace that only shows one Drawing layer. Look under the Workspaces dropdown for the Camera view.
This was my own first mistake :)
awesome!

please review TV Paint! I don't know if want tv paint or toon boom
Check out Aaron Blaises' channel. He's a classicly trained fine artist who became an animator at Disney, and his TV Paint skills are lovely
Who'd of thunk all sudo-chibi characters are amazing at body painting like sanic??
very informative
Can you make a video in flash that shows us how to make flash anamtion look 50s cartoons like the filter the qaulity tried to mKe it look like it but I failed lot

If you play Little Big Planet 2-3 creation mode, will be more easy for you. xD
Awesome
Anime Studio does pretty much the same thing, doesn't require other programs to run (like quicktime) and only costs $300.
Yeah, in fact anime studio is so good you see it all the time in professional shows, and 2D animated movies... Wait a second... That's harmony I was thinking of
Misterprickly Anime studio is dumb.
Dan Reaper That statement was so profound.
Misterprickly
k
Matt Berg-Cody That's cause they get a kickback from the company.
You might as well say that Nike is the best shoe 'cause that's what the pro's wear!
I'm saying that it's comparable and less expensive than toon boom.
When you're starting out as an independent, that's what you look for; Function and price!
AHHH Wat????? I was somehow unsubscribed to you. Why RUclips??? Oh well Guess that means I have the pleasure of subscribing to you again :)
A great guide you could do is how to torrent flash animation XD.
Hey Jazza, could you make a tutorial on drawing people kissing? Thanks!
Rigging in toon boom is pure horror experience
I love onion skin
Stu VS true, but for this the upgrade just gives you more for the most part, wouldn't be much point in taking away the old license in my opinion
I really hate inking in this program it's incredibly annoying is there a way to bring your gestures into photoshop to do it and then put them back?
Waiting for anime studio pro 11!!!! Toon boom is so expensive.
no frame by frame animation= no life in the work.
I agree. Tweened and cut out animation usually looks really lifeless.
***** Kim Possible is Classical Animation, not digital. whereas Spongebob's earlier seasons are classical and later ones are digital.
I really wish I could have gotten this one but oh well
AAAAARGH THE HAND! When it grasps its so...out of place!
What's the difference between the bitmap drawing and vector drawing?
bitmap drawing starts to get pixelated when you zoom in, while a vector drawing always has the same quality whether you zoom in or out = 0 quality loss
oh, thanks
A Vector drawing is a description of a line as it appears between two points. This description includes alterations to the line by a curve or an angle, and a description of the color used. This is why a vector can be copied, or scaled up or down, and not lose its clean shape.
Drawing that same line in a bitmap program, describes color as its expressed in each pixel it passes over. This is why the bitmap file size is larger.
How much money is harmony?
But, this program is so expensive. And trial version does not launch at all.
no matter what i do, i can't seem to figure out how to see what I'm drawing

Да довольно интересное видео
is toon boom good for linework
***** He's a got a video demonstrating the brush and pencil tools in Toon Boom. It seems to have more control over the line work than Flash.
Jazza, how much does adobe flash cost, toon boom is way over my price range, do you have any suggestion for cheap animation software?
Nguyen Do Anime Studio is relatively inexpensive and does animation quite well.
So you mean like tweening a circle into a square kind of thing?
Onion Skin I mean like can you tween a whole hand drawn raster/vector character or a part of him using master key-frames with the computer filling them all in, i.e. Hand-drawing a character's expression changing with 7 frames (frames 1, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30) then having the program solve the other 23 frames?
help I opened toon boom and I don't know what to do to draw something
***** But I can't change the color
man shit I started with toon boom it has very good option but it's very hard to under stand it
tbh i hate the animation style of just making different body parts shapes and making them move.
+ImpastaSauce I can't agree with you more! That's why I am highly thinking of trying to learn TV paint instead.
There's definately a drop in the feel as most users implement it. I hate that Frankenstein look, too. But using the Deformer brings some fluidity back to the rigs, as does the Inverse Kinematics feature.
ImpastaSauce That's how Jazza animates in flash. Rick and Morty also uses character rigs. But. you can tween and animate frame by frame if you wander.
Youe Australian accent was very deep back then 😅
i still dotn understand whats going on T-T
How much is toon boom?
mrjblanco50 from $23 per month to $1975 for perpetual
It takes a lot less effort to create that scene using Anime Studio Pro as compared to Toon Boom
Jazza draw deadpool plz :)
Don't like the result of all those effects, make the animation so programed and less animated.
Stay without the effects.
+Danybox Piano lol
Still seems to have the whole mediocre dragging pictures across the screen animation, especially with those arms of the monster, will admit it does have some useful tools for effects.
Sounds like a lot of concentrating
Lmao im never going to be able to do this shit
You are so cute!
This video seemed a bit sponsored, didn't it.
ur voice..
a bit out of focus, blury as hell
