so lets say this *1sttimereact* for argument sake, just a debate become an old fan of the series and you.. "snape loved lily more than friend, but sadly lily never reciprocated the same feeling towards snape, she basically friendzone here nothing more of less.. james, sirius lupin and snape were bitter rivals even until the time of their deaths(imma say this though and this my theory and speculation: "do you remember both in the book and the movie snape was seen first at number 12 grimmald place at the meeting with the order?' i believe snape gave them the heads up, hell have die and switch sides in order to "force harry" to grow up..(unbeknowest to harry, ron and hermoine amongst others)
yes harry went through emotional trauma calling snape out in the great hall with minera and others there(personal opinion even harry was illogicially emotional drive harry no right to say what he felt against snape, to ridiculed like that) this was 20 year old plan and most of them, especially the adults knew they wasnt coming back after the battle of hogwarts..
now harry wants to have respect for snape, after seeing what snape has went via his "tear memory" bro, harry was fake ..somethings are left up for faith to decide, you dont need or have desire "a worldly desire" to know absolute truth, or science and reasoning for unexplained .." something or sometimes just let it be and it shall show what must happen or with happenstance let it happen.." as snape aka alan rickman #rip once said "for the moment or time being let them unfold.." and thats life to be fair..

The three parts that kill me the most in this series is
      1) this line, then Lily repeating the line to Harry.
      2) In the prisoner of azkaban, Sirius going 'the people we love never really leave us, they live here you see.' Pointing to Harry's heart. Then in the same scene as Lily's 'Always', when Harry asks if Voldemort would be able to see them. Sirius goes no, we're here you see. Pointing to Harry's heart.
      3) The same scene again with Harry going 'and Remus your son'.

I don't think he doesn't love Harry, but yeah the book is very nuanced as compared to the movie. Snape hates Harry's triats from his father, but sees his mother and has no choice but to care for it. He hates AND loves him. Thats why in the book after Dumbledore asked him that, he simply said "him?", because even though he doesn't have a want for a kid to die, Albus should know that that's NOT the root of his concern.
Snape is arguably the most nuanced character in all of fiction. He went from villain to hero, and was never really fully loyal to either one. But he had ONE thing he always loved: Lily.....

For all HP's ups and downs as a work of fiction, Snape has emerged as one of the best characters written in the past 40 years, so complex and nuanced, and brought to life brilliantly by Alan Rickman (R.I.P.). Alan was actually going to leave the films after the second or third movie, but Rowling took him aside and told him - and ONLY him - what the backstory was. Alan became fascinated and stuck with the character. He held the secret close but it informed his portrayal immensely. In my opinions, one of the big failures of the movie wasn't laying the groundwork for the reveal of the Doe patronus, of how the Doe was Lily's patronus (to match his father's Stag), but as the sole source of his only happiness and his only happy memories (remember, how you summon your patronus, with powerful feelings of love and joy), his own patronus mimicked hers, though it was kept in secret, like his love.
Imagine loving a person more than you could possibly ever love anything else and hating the person who took her from you by exemplifying everything you could never be... and then being forced to look after and care for the living embodiment of both your greatest love and admiration and your greatest source of hate and self-loathing. So masterfully written and the reveal was so superbly done after all the red herrings and (seemingly) conflicting behaviors by Snape...
Personally, I have been fortunate enough to discover that there are worse ways to live one's live than in the service and devotion to one truly good woman - even after she has gone.

My favorite hint about Snape's true nature was that Dumbledore had Snape train Harry in occlumency in Order of the Phoenix - because Snape has been successfully using that very skill against Voldemort for years.
In fact, that speech he gives Narcissa and Bellatrix about "playing his part well" and "deceiving one of the greatest wizards ever" was 100 percent true - they just assumed he was deceiving Dumbledore instead.

My experience as a reader of HP books, this scene was ths most heart-wrenching. I was a menace and announce spoilers to people, because I like being the first one to read books.
My older cousin bought the book, HP7, hardbound, and I asked if I can read it first. One thinh she told me, "Once you're done, don't spoil anything to anybody"
When I got to this part, I was at the dining table, waiting for lunch. My parents and other relatives were around, talking, laughing, and having a good time as we were having a weekend get-together.
Tears rolled nonstop, as I was struggling to read the chapter slowly, taking in the information.
My cousin, who owns the book, noticed and asked: "Why are you crying?"
I just looked up to her, and said: " Oh... you don't wanna know... You have to read it, I'm not gonna spoil you"
This plot twist was the first that I have never spoiled to anyone, as I want them to feel how breakinh it is.

@@darajeeling While that is true, James ultimately did fail to protect Lily. We learn in the books that James casually threw his wand onto the sofa after entering the house, minutes before Voldemort broke in. Despite the severity of the situation and the fact they had a CHILD that was being targeted by a very dangerous wizard, he tossed his wand aside without a care, effectively leaving him defenseless. That's why he was killed so easily. If he had kept his wand on him, he could have tried to buy time for Lily and Harry to escape. They both failed to protect Lily, but James was in a more direct position to do so, and when it mattered, he was careless. Upon hearing of her death, you can bet that much of his anger towards James was because he didn't protect her. Yes he loathed them for bullying him, but Lily was always his sole focus. And after 10+ years of dealing with her death, he probably blamed James a lot in that time.

Things of note: When Harry is trying to close his mind, he enters Snape's mind and see's James, Sirius. Lupin, and Peter bullying Snape. Snape called Lily a mudblood. In the book that made it in the memory because Snape apologized for it but she didn't accept it. Peter was the one who was secret keeper for James and Lily and that's how Voldemort found them. Neville was the second boy born at the end of July but Voldemort went after the half blood not the pure blood. The doe represented Lily and Snape's love for her, always. When Snape killed Dumbledore, that should have broken the power of the elder wand but Draco disarmed Dumbledore so the wand transferred to Draco inadvertently. It's ironic really. The memories show pretty much everyone is a way worse person as to how they've been portrayed up to that point.
    - Lily's sister is not a nice girl, though we knew already what she'd grow up to be like.
    - James Potter was indeed a bully & arrogant. We can clearly see that.
    - James actually picked on Severus yet Lily did not only not protect her best friend, she fell in love with the bully.
    - Albus is highly manipulative and is interested in destroying Voldemort above all else. Including himself and Harry. He wouldn't have known whether Harry would survive or not.
Severus actually protected Harry with his life. The child of his best friend that literally betrayed him. Not because she went with another guy, but with the guy that specifically picked on him. That's cold to treat your best friend like that. And Severus STILL protected her child after she died AND she died because *she trusted the wrong person* . Sound familiar? The reality is, Lily is a pretty bad person too.

Here comes a post from someone who grew up with the books and movies ( I am the same age as Daniel Radcliffe).
When reading this part in the book (I read all books prior to movies), it completely BROKE me because you realize that the very same man you hated turns out to be the very same man who is the hero. Snape played his character so masterfully, hiding his true feelings for Lilly and behaved like an asshole towards Harry in his presence, but backstage he was saving him from death (remember the Patronus he send?) and hiding a fake replica of the Griffindor sword in Bellatrix’s vault so Harry would have access to the sword?
For me, seeing the movies in cinema and especially the final movie, THIS is the scene where the entire cinema froze. Not a single word was spoken, it was so quite you could hear a fly on the wall. The movie makers did brilliantly in making the cinema adaptation so masterfully done as opposed to the book version. When Harry then realized the truth, we all broke down and cried. Just imagine a cinema complete SILENT and then bursting out in tears and screaming.
THIS was unequivocally the MAJOR plot twist of the books, it took everyone by surprise when reading the books when they were launched for the first time.
For me, Snape’s death was the most painful. Not even Dumbledore’a death made such impact.

Snape’s patrons was a doe just like Lily. James’s patrons was a stag. Dumbledore was dying anyway, so that is why the plan for killing him. That way Draco Malfoy did not become a murder. Snape did not love Harry, but protected him out of loyalty to Lily. Also, Voldemort did not know that he had created a horcrux in Harry.

this was one of the very rare occasions a movie did something better than the book. when reading the book i didn't really care a lot about it but when i watched the movie it broke my heart and i teared up.

Dumbledore knew how to make Voldemort vulnerable. Harry had to “die” to kill that part of Voldemort soul.

I’m still wondering, if dying Snape hadn’t shared his memories, *who was supposed to tell Harry he had to die?*

Anyone else screaming at the screen when you first saw Snape summon the doe?? You knew what they were showing and what it meant so fast, and it was so painful!!
