In 1961 I was a shy 12 year old boy who was just discovering the attraction of the opposite sex and this song spoke to my romantic soul in a deep way, and strangely enough it still does now as a not so shy and time weary 73 year old, good songs and music can do that to you, and can also carry you back in time to remind you of those young innocent, sensitive adolescent feelings, Helen's sexy and soothing voice compliment a wonderful song with sweet nostalgia.

hi Alan, I just saw googles tribute today to Dusty Springfield. Then by looking for her I found all the other
female singers of the early 60ies. As a young german au-pair girl in London at the time I knew and admired
them all. What a time that was, which never comes back. What an untroubled, easygoing life that has been.
All comments here are full of those our age and I thought: Nostalgie once it grabs you........ ;o))

Another UK singer from the same time period well worth checking out is Julie Grant, listen to "Count On Me" "When You Ask About Love" "So Many Ways" "Then, Only Then" they all have that wonderful special 1960s sound.

A fine song of unrequited love. The lady has an erotic timbre to her voice, slightly husky, very steady, very feminine and confident and sincere. A superb song and a deal better than a lot of the Beatles.

I’ve just heard this song for the first time today and it just hit me, how beautiful it is. Young love & longing. We can all relate, no matter when we were born. The 60’s seemed like a great time to be young.

Helens voice is so haunting, forget any female singer after the 60's this lady with several others, Sandy Shaw, Dusty Springfield, Cilla Black etc could outvoice any of today's women. Wish I was there are the time.

Umm, this came out in 1961 so to have been 14 at the time would make you about 73 now.
Helen was 14 when this was no.1 her 2nd no.1 of the year and her 3rd big hit.
She only had a couple more minor hits and could have retired before she left school.
She made the equivalent of a million pounds in her first year, with all the subsequent royalties earned from that, plus concert tours and 2 brief film appearances, she was set for life and could have left school and lived comfortably for the rest of her life

Great music, great lyrics, and great singer equals a great song! I didn't know Helen Shapiro had a problem with an over active thyroid gland until I read her book. Which makes her even more plucky. The good Lord says we will all have trials and tribulations. Celebrity or not. Given all of her fame and talent I am astounded she seems so normal. Three cheers from America,
