To think that she's only 17 in this video is mind blowing. What a professional at such a young age and such amazing stage presence. Even now, knowing how big the Beatles became after this, watching this video she is the one who mesmerises you.

You never heard the Monty Python sketch rock notes?
Dead Monkeys are to split up again, according to their manager, Lefty Goldblatt. They've been in the business now ten years, nine as other groups. Originally the Dead Salmon, they became for a while, Trout, then Fried Trout, then Poached Trout In A White Wine Sauce, and finally, Herring. Splitting up for nearly a month, the re-formed as Red Herring, which became Dead Herring for a while, and then Dead Loss, which reflected the current state of the group. Splitting up again to get their heads together, they reformed a fortnight later as Heads Together, a tight little name which lasted them through a difficult period when their drummer was suspected of suffering from death. It turned out to be only a rumour and they became Dead Together, then Dead Gear, which lead to Dead Donkeys, Lead Donkeys, and the inevitable split up. After nearly ten days, they reformed again as Sole Meuniere, then Dead Sole, Rock Cod, Turbot, Haddock, White Baith, the Plaices, Fish, Bream, Mackerel, Salmon, Poached Salmon, Poached Salmon In A White Wine Sauce, Salmon Meuniere, and Helen Shapiro. This last name, their favorite, had to be dropped following an injunction.

Shapiro popped on to the music scene with four top 3 hits - two number 1s - and was voted Britain's Top Female Singer before she was sixteen. Then she faded almost as fast as she rose. This song made it only to the middle of the charts. The lads she was goofing with in this appearance made her style seem so...yesterday. She sounded at least ten years older than her age, which was sort of weird in a way.

Terrific, catchy song. Superb vocals by a child who sings like a mature woman.
And the VERY CLEVER staging of this sequence was a treasure unto itself.
I wonder how many takes they did in rehearsal?
Helen Shapiro's facial nuances are impeccably timed. The eyes, the smiles, everything is magical.
For a just a kid (of 16 or 17 at the time) she had amazing talent and professionally seasoned with 2-3 years of experience already under her belt.
She exudes supreme confidence and gave the Beatles (the FRIGGING Beatles!!!) a lot of sass in this 3 minute reel.
What an absolute treasure. I was not familiar with her until stumbling upon this song today and then also read her bio.
This clearly should have been a hit song. Surprised it never caught on in U.S.

Helen Shapiron was a big name on the Brit scene at the time and in Feb 1963 the Beatles joined her UK tour as 4th billing. During the tour they put together the song Misery and offered it to her but she declined. She was big, they were nothing! A few months later they stormed the charts and she must have kicked herself.
Those that are new to her, search You Don't Know and Walking Back to Happiness, recorded when she was just 14.

wow. Turning down a beatles song. Please Please me has I saw her standing there, ask me why, please please me, love me do, do you want to know a secret, and it's my guess that the Beatles considered "Misery" one of their weaker songs. They kept the best stuff for themselves usually, but even the worst Beatles songs were always better than anything else. Please please me hit the top of the charts in May 1963 and stayed there the rest of the year. So it was only a couple months before Helen knew what a mistake it was to pass on a Beatles song.

As well as their uniqueness they deserved their success by working their socks off. During the month long tour, on downtime they infilled by squeezing in 7 other gigs, 4 TV and Radio shows and recorded most of the tracks for their first album.
