I was a Royal Marine in the sixties and Helen with others came to do a Show at our Camp, The Commando Training Centre RM. The show was at the Camp Theatre called "The Globe". I was lucky enough to say hello to her and what a lovely unpretentious Lady she was and I never forgot. God Bless her.
She abandoned the faith of her ancestors. Only a few years after millions of Jews refused to give up their religion and preferred to be martyred. She was a lowlife traitor to her people.
Come on BBC.... Do the right thing.... Give us back this great program that is sorely missed. It spread good vibes through all who took part and watched it.
A few years ago, late 70s early 80s Helen was booked to perform at a Cabaret evening at the Baron Suite, Edinburgh. She came on, sang one song, began another but had to finish abruptly as she had a really bad throat. Her throat was so bad she could hardly speak her apology. She left, went to a dressing room and we all looked at each other. I had been so looking forward to seeing her, as it was partly her influence that helped me to become a Singer, and I was able to sing standards too, which really helped me find plenty of work. I went over to the House Band, most of whom I knew, since I had worked with them myself. Next thing I knew I was asked to step in, as there was quite an audience who needed to be entertained. That's my story about Helen and me, whom I spoke to later on before she went back to her hotel. She really was unwell. I stood in like an understudy does. It's a memory that's been treasured by me all these years. Thanks Helen. Thanks for the Standards I learned from listening to you .
Helen Shapiro. Such a talent and a lovely lady. As an American I have always listened to British tv, vocalists and movies. Helen overlapped with Alma Cogan, Connie Francis, Petula Clark, Lesley Gore, and Brenda Lee and so many others. Graceful, kind and gracious. Shalom Helen. We love you here in the States. Been listening to your songs in the car, and everywhere. Wish the variety shows of yesteryear would make a comeback. Helen is iconic for so many reasons including the Beatles.
I had never heard of Helen Shapiro until yesterday when the video of her and 3 of the 4 Beatles showed up on Facebook, "Look Who It Is". I was hooked! I absolutey love her voice and she seemed so comfortable. This was from 1963. I had to know more and came across this. She has not disappointed. I can't believe I've never heard of her! Apparently she didn't get much air time in the United States.
Helen Shapiro is so nice, down to earth, and talented. Coming from an American, every Brit should be proud of her. She is a role model for the rest of us!
As an American, I really never knew that much about Helen Shapiro, but I've always liked Walking Back To Happiness. Really enjoyed getting to see her story unfold on this show. Cheers.
Helen Sapiro; an underestimated musical godess! Your voice and songs, Helen, will live on forever! Thank you so very much for what you given this beautiful and borrowed world of ours!
What a lovely trip down memory lane! I loved Helen Shapiro - who is a year younger than me and still know all the words to her hit records. So pleased that she looks so well and is still enjoying singing. Thank you for this memory.
@jiliosler9353. Still looks so well? Did you not realise this is a very old recording ? She is now 76. and I'm posting this on 2023. She was probably around 40/50 on this video. I remember all her songs, too.
i know im randomly asking but does someone know a way to log back into an Instagram account? I stupidly lost the account password. I love any tricks you can give me
@Henry Caspian I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site through google and I'm trying it out now. Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
I never realized Helen is such a lovely person wished I went to see her when she was singing in Nottingham in the early 60, If I remember correctly it was the same time Clif Richard was singing in Nottingham many thanks for uploading this Brilliant documentary so now we all know what an Amazing person she is God Bless you girl
Helen, I love your songs. It's a real pity that in my younger years growing up in Canada, I didn't hear enough of your pop songs. Not too many British artists were popular on the other side of the pond until the Beatles changed that. That's a real shame. You are among my British female singers on CDs together with Dusty Springfield, Cilla Black, Petula Clark, Sandy Shaw, Lulu etc.
Had a huge schoolboy crush on Helen in the 60's, then I found out she recently appeared at a church hall a few streets from where I live, and missed her !!!
Thanks for this tribute to Helen, which i have only just seen on YT. Helen is 6 years younger than me. She has many admirers everywhere i'm sure including myself. I remember Helen very well through her songs when i was a teenager and i became an instant fan of Helen all those years ago and still am in my senior years. Cliff nailed it with his lovely comment to Helen. Robert. New Zealand.
I'd almost forgotten this Young lady till now. & What a beautiful lady she then & now, Yes I remember watching Helen on those fantastic shows,Thank your lucky stars, & a few more, I'm pleased to see her life has turned out very happy, Very Lucky lady, God bless. ❤❤❤.
a highly underated performer and a very nice person as well, we had the pleasure of watching her perform and afterwards she came and spoke to my friend and I who was wheelchair bound and couldn't climb some steps to meet her for a good half hour after the show a lovely person.
I was lucky to work alongside Helen & George Layton in Oliver! They were both amazing open people. As George said Helens dressing room was always open. I have wonderful picture of Helen sitting on Christopher Ellisons lap in her dressing room ( he played Bill Sykes) It was an amazing West End experience working with them all in the late 70's. In 2019 i was working for a small charity and i phoned her and asked if she would do an interview with me. Lucky for me & 50 members of the audience she came and did a lovely interview. Then without asking she sang a couple of her hits, signed autographs and we sat chatting for ages. She is as lovely as everyone says on here, and still a star. ❤
I just fell in love with her voice / music just a few months ago and I'm 54! Imagine that. Accidentally stumbled across "Queen for tonight" on a Spotify 60s playlist and now I'm a huge fan. Life is strange.
Walking Back To Happiness, Kiss And Run, Look Who It Is, etc. All phenomenal, and highlights of an impeccable track record amassed by a world class artist. Job extraordinarily well done!
A bit older than Ms Shapiro so I remember her and others through the 60's, but I never realised what a wonderful lady she was/is. Great to see this clip in 2024
She is known to most American Beatle fans as the singer who gave The Beatles their first big tour of Great Britain. She was the star of the tour but The Beatles just released Please Please Me and it was during that tour that their fortunes changed and they wound up the stars by the end of the tour. The Beatles were slightly embarrassed but Shapiro was very kind and graceful and I think even let them watch tv in her dressing room because they didnt have one. She was a big star to them.
Absolutely outstanding......followed her during the sixties, hadn't seen her for many years since then after moving to the US....but what a charming lady, so exceptionally talented and quality professional.....
I came across this by pure chance. I was at school at Northwold Road Primary school at the time as Ms. Shapiro, we knew each other. Her talent was found during her next school (girls only). I was pleased that she was appreciated This is a long time ago!!.
Fantastic sound it's too long since I last heard her,she looks wonderful for her age 1 year younger than me so I grew up listening to her magical voice
In my late teens I had the privilege of going to some little village hall where Helen Shapiro sang gospel songs and told us how she found the Jewish Messiah and gave her life to Him, Jesus Christ.
I remember when Helen was appearing Southampton, when I was a teenager, I was three of my friends walking down the High Street, and I saw Helen walking with two of her Heavy’s, I could not believe my eyes she walk by me at close quarters, I wanted to say hello Helen, but looking at the Heavy’s I thought I better not💖
Gotta say, that voice. It was my manhood emergence background theme. Never even looked at girls with high-pitched voices. Too late now but a few more songwriters looking for a quality vehicle for 'strong women' songs could have seen her international career blossom. That being said I doubt very much that bothers her in the slightest. Those feet know exactly how nice it is to feel solid ground. Having a smile that could light up a small city certainly helps. Love from a fan in Oz 💖.
What a chance for in sixtie's to know so great idols of music hall as Helen Shapiro,Cjiff Richard for UK or Paul Anka.My teenage youth.Even if they are rather old as me Ihey stay my idols in my heart.2 years ago I was at Angers in France Eric Burdon and Animals sang.It was marvellous.Thank you Dear Helen.

As Cliff Richard says, we have the same Father! Love Helen Shapiro's Messianic gospel!
Helena Shapiro już dawno jest nawrócona do Pana Jezusa Boga
She abandoned the faith of her ancestors. Only a few years after millions of Jews refused to give up their religion and preferred to be martyred. She was a lowlife traitor to her people.
Come on BBC.... Do the right thing.... Give us back this great program that is sorely missed. It spread good vibes through all who took part and watched it.
They'd ruin it, it'll end up with non-entities like Gemma Collins and Joey Essex

I was, madly, in love with her back in the '60s.
By that time I had just arrived from Jamaica 🇯🇲, I too was in loved with her. ❤🎉.
I still am.

Fantastic! Talented AND beautiful!
Helen Shapiro is so nice, down to earth, and talented. Coming from an American, every Brit should be proud of her. She is a role model for the rest of us!
we of a certain generation are very proud of her.
Helena Shapiro jest żydówką z krwi i kości,a nie pochodzenia amerykańskiego
Having met her, I can say you are right 😊
As an American, I really never knew that much about Helen Shapiro, but I've always liked Walking Back To Happiness. Really enjoyed getting to see her story unfold on this show. Cheers.
Lovely Helen born same day as my wife my wife is one of her biggest fans and loves to hear her songs bless her
Thanks for posting this gem of a tribute to Ms Shapiro!
Helen Sapiro; an underestimated musical godess! Your voice and songs, Helen, will live on forever! Thank you so very much for what you given this beautiful and borrowed world of ours!
One of our finest singers. Glad that Helen has had the recognition she so deserves. Northwold school also had Marc Bolan as a pupil.
Marc Bolan or Marc Field as he was at school was Helen's cousin & was in a band with Helen & Susan

@jiliosler9353. Just finished watching this. It was 1995, so she would have been 51. Didn't realise she had three marriages,, and no children.
So underrated. Helen has such a fantastic voice.
Yeah...A stiff lump of wood...compared to "little miss dynamite" Brenda Lee
slept on

My very first single I bought in Zambia was Queen for Tonight when I was at school. I have never forgotten her or that song. Love you Helen!
Helen Shapiro, magnificent singer and a lady in every sense.
Beautiful lady and singer and so down to earth... God bless Helen and her family.

Please don’t treat me like a child….sang by a 14 year old with a fabulous voice. Couldn’t fail !

Always wondered where she went. Still got her records. Lovely lady! Shame I don't like jazz, I would be her biggest fan again!
'Tell Me What He Said' is her greatest-it lives on in Northern Soul years later.
Wonderful stuff ... she is a treasure and great to honour her so well.
You can hardly sing any better than that. 🥰

I didn't realise Helen was British until now. I've heard her singing voice many times and automatically thought she was American.
懐かしい❤当時は中学生でした 今聞いてもポップで良い感じ 🎼🎶
