I am left-handed and just take a right handed guitar and play upside down, without altering the guitar or strings. It's just the way I learned to play. I have tried to play a left-handed guitar with the strings reversed and it was too difficult. In all honestly, when I am playing, it doesn't feel like I am playing guitar in any different way than a right handed person. It's only when someone points it out to me that I realized it's different.

One thing that is particularly cool about this is that on stringed instruments, like guitar, your hands are responsible for different aspects of music. If you play lefty, your left hand is suddenly completely in control of rhythm and your right in control of harmony, whereas it's the other way around for right-handed players. The switch between these two systems involves more than the muscle memory required to shape the chord and the strength to press the strings correctly. (of course, more advance techniques will mix the aspects and blur the lines between each hand, such as tapping and fret-hand muting, but the core of it still stands for the most part) Really cool that he did this. Teachers often forget what being a beginner really feels like.
It's something I do with cooking though. I've spent many an hour teaching friends how to do some foods and nothing helps more than going over the entire recipe from scratch, taking ntohing for granted and slowly making your way back up. So far, it's helped me learn some knife skills left-handed, how to pleat some doughs in many different ways and some interesting ways to substitute for things I can't get from the market with their home-made/McGuyver versions. Teaching is a very good way to learn yourself :D

Most guitar course instructors completely forget what it was like to be a beginner, and don't go through the effort that you have to learn it again, Rob. Thank you for truly putting in the effort to re-experience what a beginner does, and in doing so, making yourself a better instructor (which, in turn, will produce better students).

I teach at a School of Rock. One of my favorite things to do during my off time is pick up one of the left handed guitars in the school and try to play it. It is quite humbling and reminds me of what a lot of my beginners go through. We forget after a few years just how hard starting the instrument was. I think it is important for any guitarist who has been playing for at least 10 years to try this out.
As someone who plays guitar left handed, i love the video. It's really cool to see how much people struggle when they're playing guitar with the wrong hand and it's also a bit annoying to walk into a Guitar Store and only see 3 guitars that you can actually play properly and even then, it still feels strange because i use 12s and these guitars usually have 9s on them, although that's a story for another day.
I'm a left handed guitarist too and I can play in two ways which are 1). playing Left hand guitar with strings in straight (E,A,D,G,B,E) and 2).Right hand guitar holding it upside down in left hand & playing with strings (E,B,G,D,A,E). I started with playing the standard left hand guitar but later when I wanted to further expand & try out playing other people's exotic guitars(most oftenly right handed ones) I had no other way but to learn them upside down so that I can just get some good feel of my playing as fast as I can. The chord structures & holding positions and also improvisation are what I am almost used to now. I find this way of playing very interesting & sometimes come up with completely different & beautiful new patterns or ideas. Infact I'm completely in love playing the right handed guitar upside down now, & I think that's the way I'm more diving into now. Also it helps me if I want to try others guitars which are most of the time right handed & can play immediately on them without looking for that specific left handed one. Most of the time non-guitarists, non-musicians or people in general don't notice this way of playing but some true observers do notice it for sure.
I slept handers are always watching out for that. I see a lot of videos and think oh wow left handed guitarist then I look at some writing somewhere in the image and see it's reversed and say ah shit.
Trying to teach my 6year old Ukulele but she’s left handed so I feel your torment! However it REALLY opened my eyes to just how difficult things can be for a beginner and it’s helped me not call her an idiot every 5 minutes when she zigs instead of zags
Love this! It’s genius! Many masters of a craft have gotten so skilled that they take the basics for granted. Imagine teaching yourself to walk and breathe again 😂. By going left-handed, Rob’s years of knowledge and experience didn’t go away, but his all muscle memory, callus, and mastered techniques vanished. The fact that even HE struggled so much shows how important practice is for playing an instrument.
Absolutely brilliant that you're so comfortable just not being *that* good with the left-handed guitars. I know a lot of players would get frustrated and just go back to what they're used to, so the way you handle the discomfort and mistakes with grace and humor is really what makes you such a good player in my book.
I love being a lefty who plays right handed, no hassel. I cant tell you how many times a bunch of friends were hanging out, passing the ole guitar around, and I'm so happy I was able to participate without having to bring my own guitar.
This video was awesome! Your sloppiness is saved by a rock solid band behind you. :D In all seriousness, from one lefty to another; just thank you for doing this. I really appreciate you going way out of your comfort zone.
It's fun watching you try to play like this, 'cuz you are doing all of the newb things everyone does when they start. The super clumsy strumming, using only your pointer finger for the frets... I remember those days!
And at places like guitar center they'll always have the same piece of shit overseas fender squier left-handed hundred-dollar piece of junk guitar and that's about it!

This is so awesome! Knowing all that you can do and seeing you struggle to play with your offhand is really informative and inspiring. It sends the message that one can benefit from making due with the skills they have while striving to improve, and have fun with the process regardless of skill set. Awesome!
This is a great video for making me feel like "hey I guess I'm a pretty good guitarist" so even if I don't need the lessons at least I got that from it.
Damn, your "bandmembers" are cool! Also, it feels kinda good to see someone struggle as much as I do with the instrument, despite me having a right-handed guitar. ;)
6:37 I've Always wondered: "How would a beginner guitarist sounds like in a professional recording?" Guess I got the answer now, especially from 7:42 to 8:00
If I had to guess, it's because Surf Rock uses a lot of non-western/more dissonant scales and The Mars Volta also experimented with a lot of unusual dissonant harmony. Plus less distorted guitar than is typical of punk/hardcore.
I’m a lefty who has been playing lefty for 20 years; 6 years ago, I decided to start playing right too, just coming at the hobby as a collector. So, I agree with Rob when he said it’s fun to learn to play again; It was neat to relive all those milestones and gave new life to playing covers again.
For drummers it is actually a VERY GOOD practice to switch to left handed for a while. It improves your limb independence and also gives you that brain tickle again from when you learned your first rock beat :)
Just tried holding my guitar the wrong way round, probably ever. I've been playing for like 20 years. I cannot believe how much I can't play, really gives you an idea of how a beginner feels. Kudos for all guitar players ever getting to the point where they can hold down a few chords. Playing upside down really gives you an appreciation for how good you actually are.

I'm a left handed guitarist too and I can play in two ways which are
1). playing Left hand guitar with strings in straight (E,A,D,G,B,E)
and
2).Right hand guitar holding it upside down in left hand & playing with strings (E,B,G,D,A,E).
You just needed to flip the picture over 😂
I slept handers are always watching out for that. I see a lot of videos and think oh wow left handed guitarist then I look at some writing somewhere in the image and see it's reversed and say ah shit.
This is one of the most Wholesome thing I've seen in my life. Thank you for what you've done for the online guitar community!
2:10 Rob making deathrock, my life is complete
Rob Scallon play guitar left handed: "my finger hurts"
Buster: *died of laughter*
Brooo, Jessica Burdeaux is such a badass ❤️🔥
I've seen her videos. She's an absolute beast behind the kit.
You’ve got potential Rob, I reckon you could be a great guitarist one day.
Fellow lefties, we have been heard!
Yes we will rise
*reads in Colins voice* we have been haired
Leftys got to represent!
I am so thankful for him. We're like some weird endangered species getting a long-overdue documentary series.
Glad to the minority and not norm.
Absolutely brilliant that you're so comfortable just not being *that* good with the left-handed guitars. I know a lot of players would get frustrated and just go back to what they're used to, so the way you handle the discomfort and mistakes with grace and humor is really what makes you such a good player in my book.
Our kind has been noticed
Very nice to see this from the outside as a lefty playing bass righthanded for a couple of years and now 'playing' guitar lefthanded.
Even being Left-handed and playing lefty, it's weird seeing someone do it especially you
Same here. I always feel strange when I see a video where somebody plays left-handed. 🤣 Anomality. 🤣
I love being a lefty who plays right handed, no hassel. I cant tell you how many times a bunch of friends were hanging out, passing the ole guitar around, and I'm so happy I was able to participate without having to bring my own guitar.
@@jaybeemhardscrote7466 that’s dope. I learned left handed. At times I wish I did it right handed. More guitar models to choose from.
I love unveiling of big projects like this.im proud of you man
always wanted to try a lefty guitar.. gonna keep an eye out for a used rig
This video was awesome! Your sloppiness is saved by a rock solid band behind you. :D
In all seriousness, from one lefty to another; just thank you for doing this. I really appreciate you going way out of your comfort zone.
Wow he really does sound like a beginner again, including the "aaah" every time you fail.
It's fun watching you try to play like this, 'cuz you are doing all of the newb things everyone does when they start. The super clumsy strumming, using only your pointer finger for the frets... I remember those days!
The pain is real! Been there!!!!
This makes me so happy. Thanks for taking a picture with me at Lost Boys Drive in by Bridgeview!!!
i was at sweetwater once and i asked how many guitars they had, it was 5,000
asked the same but for left handed it was about 25. its rough
This is pretty sad
And at places like guitar center they'll always have the same piece of shit overseas fender squier left-handed hundred-dollar piece of junk guitar and that's about it!
@@Will_Wel it is true
And they are all in black.
But when you do find the right ax, it's a precious moment that right handies can't possibly understand.
@@tjsogmc all my electric guitars have been black aside from a schecter damien 7, which was grey lol
Hey Rob, I just finished Guitar Quest, and had a great time with it. Thanks for all the knowledge and all the laughs. Love the behind the scenes of the finale :)
This reminds me of that british model who got to 120kg and went back to 85kg all in one year to promote his exercise program.
I think its actually really cool you're literally putting your self in a beginners shoes. Thats a good teacher if I've ever heard it
Let's appriciate Rob for buying a left handed guitar so he himself will feel a beginner again
That drummer is fantastic. And her smile and personality is so infectious. She's having a ball.
Can't wait for the next video being "Left Metal/Mirrored Metal" - where every instrument is played left-handed/mirrored
I’ve been playing guitar for years now and I’m pretty sure I can like play guitar now and probably don’t need a beginner’s guitar course but y’all just look like you’re having so much fun I wanna watch it anyway...
Me, a lefty: Weakness disgust me
(Love you Rob, amazing job)
omg it's a fat waccoon!
try playing righty then
As a lefty aswell, i have, it was weird but didn’t feel too far from whet I usually do
I'm a lefty but I play right handed guitar.
@@noahcalland8316 ayyyyy me tooooooo
Right handed guitars just feel better amirite
The juxtaposition between the low skill guitars (7:40) against the flawless execution with absolute ease at the drums (7:50) really cracks me up
Don't know what he's complaining about, I've played guitar left handed for years
🤣🤣🤣
This is so awesome! Knowing all that you can do and seeing you struggle to play with your offhand is really informative and inspiring. It sends the message that one can benefit from making due with the skills they have while striving to improve, and have fun with the process regardless of skill set. Awesome!
"The Master has failed more times than the student has tried "
Some random wise guy, I don't know.
Ims so glad you uploaded! Love your videos!
Playing Pinch Harmonics : Not Pro
Playing guitar left-handed: Pro
Great form on the drummer!
Lefty here that has only played right handed. I feel like I would struggle only a little bit less in this situation.
Rob is definitely the most creative guitar youtuber out there. Every video is super inspiring
From Rob, you'll be Michael Angelo Batio Lol
Omg yes
*Ok bet*

He should borrow one of MAB's dual guitars and give it a try
hahah this was awesome! and you have such a positive attitude for learning :)
is there any chance we're getting perhaps a 1st of january album? or even february, march idk
What 2021 needs to start off right!
This is a great video for making me feel like "hey I guess I'm a pretty good guitarist" so even if I don't need the lessons at least I got that from it.
When you get good enough, you should duet with yourself with a right and a left hand guitar.
Jessica is a beast on the cans!
Now, reverse the drum set as well ;D
Damn, your "bandmembers" are cool! Also, it feels kinda good to see someone struggle as much as I do with the instrument, despite me having a right-handed guitar. ;)
6:37 I've Always wondered: "How would a beginner guitarist sounds like in a professional recording?"
Guess I got the answer now, especially from 7:42 to 8:00
I wish that they would play this song for real! I LOVE THIS SONG!!!!! Jessica's drumming is amazing!!!!!!
it sounds like Mars Volta at some points, is it because the guitar effects or they're both using left handed guitar..cool
Now you know how every lefty feels , hopeless at a guitar store
Forever stuck playing the right handed’s upside down.
That, and enduring the sidelong sneers of the employees when you ask about left hand basses.
Mhm.
When will they learn
For drummers it is actually a VERY GOOD practice to switch to left handed for a while. It improves your limb independence and also gives you that brain tickle again from when you learned your first rock beat :)
me: playing left handed is sooo easy
also me
left handed
I'm lefty but glad I learned music right handed
Good job Rob! Love your channel and your personality dude.
When you rebirth in a RPG game
Just tried holding my guitar the wrong way round, probably ever. I've been playing for like 20 years. I cannot believe how much I can't play, really gives you an idea of how a beginner feels. Kudos for all guitar players ever getting to the point where they can hold down a few chords. Playing upside down really gives you an appreciation for how good you actually are.
I laugh at this and then realize, this is my skill level, and i AM left handed
As a left handed player, this is how I feel every time I’m at a friend’s house without my gear. Respect to you for doing this!
As a lefty... NOW YOU KNOW HOW IT FEELS LOL
the fact that you guys picked out that sean paul part was great. really shows your music versatility.
im also west indian so i heard it as well and wasnt expecting that reference haha
Wow, I've never been this early before.
Let’s take a moment to appreciate robs mix on this track, especially the drums!!! Thst snare is fucking amazing
I AM LEFT HANDED
Wow! I'm a left-handed guitarist you're the first one try to play on my side! You rules dude!
It's sounds like absolutely falling guitar hero track
You did very well in a short amount of time. Now I know how Faul was able to master left handed guitar and bass. 😃
hilariously my right hand is my dominant hand but with how i naturally played guitar hero and air guitaring as a kid, of which i still do that, I'm a lefty on guitar... that's when your left is on strum duty right? xD
Yes left hand picking hand right hand fingering (on the fretboard) hand
