My favorite episode of: "Rob Tries To Go 5 Minutes Without Making Every Song Metal"
0-000-0-000-0-000-0-000
Challenge: G O D L Y
failed in 2 minutes
To be fair he was given a weird lower tuning that really would be weird in anything else
@@dude-guy69I could see someone like Björk using a tuning like that
I love that they counted method man twice without realizing it and deduced that there must have actually been 10 original wu tang members
What's stunning to me is not how quickly you guys can come up with a song but how quickly you can *workshop* it. It's this constant back and forth between you and Andrew as you piece the thing together, half the time talking in shorthand. Brothers from another mother!
It’s not a very good song though.
@@thegoodguy44 that's subjective the point isn't to make the greatest song possible but to make something listenable out of potentially the worst tuning ever
That's insane musical chemistry. Band goals, honestly.

@@gwc_garage nah.
unironically andrew's screamo vocals for "I GOTTA PROTECT MY NECK" went fucking hard
Hard agree
Same
Huh im not there yet I guess
knowing what rob was going through at this time this episode makes more sense. i remember watching this for the first time thinking he was acting strange but i guess he truly wasn’t himself at this time. glad he’s doing better now
yeah dude... like retrospectively a lot of things makes sense...
Rob: Bass is important. A good bass line is what makes a good song great.
Also Rob: I don't have time, I'm just gonna do a simple bass line.
Hey, he had some sick slides in there
Sometimes simple IS good
And sometimes a simpler bassline is important rather than making it too busy
Relatable to the adhdstruggle is real
the story went like this:
"dude i have a cool synth the size of a room"
"you're now my best friend"
The dynamic of this group always makes me smile. The amount of fun you all have makes the music pop.
just seeing how robs mind is working through the entire process is so interesting and really shows his writing process which is so cool.
andrew: i won’t make it easy on you
rob: *NOT DIFFICULT ENOUGH*
Most guitar players would have folded at that tuning. Rob is a beast. I love this group's dynamic so much :)
the tuning is nice though, very dissonant and mysterious
It’s really pretty actually
Playing 1 chord only ? I'm no guitarist but I could at least shit out 2 😜
@@jonathanmellqvist2let’s see it
im just gonna come out and say it: they are on different levels musically. andrew is like autistically musical, while scallon has a gimmick he uses over and over again@@jonathanmellqvist2
That clean riff sounds straight up Dillinger Escape Plan to me, and I am all for it.
Sounds like something off of one of us is the killer or one of the jazz breaks on calculating infinity
great taste man
I love how Andrew's just screaming the whole song through and then, at the end, he's just politely asking for a pair of mittens 🤣
"How would you describe Rob Scallon's writing process?"
"Very much so, yes."
I appreciate how you really leaned into this. (Way to really accept his offer!) You have real talent as a producer, Rob. All those choices you made, improved both the tracks immeasurably! I don’t think anyone could have seen where this track (or the other one was going), but you did! And your maturity in walking away from the other track, and letting Andrew create, was amazing! Love your content and energy!
That is the politest ending for such a brutal breakdown about protecting your neck in the winter
Never expected a drop of Wu Tang knowledge, but I for one am not complaining.
I really like the synergy between you and Andrew, him coming from electronic synthesizers and you metal guitar and the such, it makes the whole exchange very interesting and funny to watch
Rob writing songs in the same chaotic way as I do, is so inspirational
Rob and Andrew are a seriously entertaining duo.
Been following Rob for years and he still makes the coolest content ever... Thank you, you're awesome
i'm not a regular viewer but the chemistry that ya'll share through this is hype
looking for more
Have you watched the First of October stuff
I love how the note at the end of the Sonic Boom jingle is played on the instrument that the episode is focused on, really neat
Ngl that tuning is freaking awesome. Perfectly the style that I listen to lol. Just going through the notes sounds awesome
"I don't need any practice" the most bass player thing I've heard 😂😂😂
It’s so great to see Rob just work things out on his head and say OK OK we’re gonna do it this way, genius at work also-
BADGER BADGER MUSHROOM MUSHROOM
I love that Sonic Boom is just kinda like extra First of October lol
So much fun. Love watching the awesome friendship as much as the music and creativity!
Can't wait for the covers of this.
Rob, I haven’t watched your channel in a good 5+ years and to see you still kill it is just awesome never stop!
My favorite videos of you have always been with Andrew. You guys are so creative and best of all just have fun with each other
I love y’all so much keep making amazing videos
Holy shit, Andrew has an amazing voice!
"It's not a tuning anyone else has ever used."
I'm sure Soundgarden did it sometime. They had THEE craziest tunings I've ever seen.
Mailman had a fkn weird one and superunknown. Burden in my hand is some weird open tuning. Rusty cage is like the e string is tuned to B? Fuck knows what they used on my wave
@@legitwhitebelt8353 Soundgarden tunings is a video all by itself! I believe "Dusty" has every string tuned to D and G in some form.
Sonic Youth would like to have a word with you. XD
Oh, come on, SOMEBODY must have...
@@scottvogel8477 They're too busy eating watermelon out of Peter Frampton's cooler.
You and Andrew make the best music content on RUclips
Sonic Boom is so much fun, thank you for making it!
I think these are some of my favorite Andrew Huang lyrics now.
Musical morning show? That sounds freaking awesome. I've been playing for years and y'all give me a huge boost of inspiration.
4:31 that is the nastiest breakdown I've ever heard
the way you leaned into that tuning. also this turned out way too fire lol
newest knocked loose single goes hard
This is awesome! I'm amazed at your ability to instantly play in an unusual tuning. Actually, that's one reason I study music theory myself: to eventually be able to play any guitar in any tuning with any number of strings. Thanks for the great content!
This may be the most ridiculous project I've seen you undertake yet....and I simply luv it!
This is the funniest stuff you guys have put out barring the October sessions- oml.
I really would love for my brain to work like Rob's. I don't think there's an instrument, weirdly tuned guitar or otherwise, that Rob couldn't play. He just perceives music in a way that most of us can't. He's like an X-Man of music.
The video editing of this is on a whole other level. Made it entertaining and funny
I had so many thing to say, but everyone else already covered it. Holy shit this was awesome to watch.
As a heavy metal and djent fan. That all was sounding real good to me. Got some Gojira noises going there, A man of culture 🤌
Thanks!! I just ordered a great scarf! I live very close to you Rob, and we both know how much you have to protect your neck!
Hey hey, I posted this on Andrew's channel too... I love both of your channels independently and you two are supper rad together! Thanks for keeping music making fun. Love it! And super cool to have a production team to play with they're super cool too. You're all great! This makes me think of the video Andrew posted about branding and it's limitations. I love the metal guitars added too!!! Love to see you both trying lost of different things. Please keep it up.
FINALLY!!!! Rob making metal music again! I'm back in!
"SCAAAAARRRRRRRFFFFF!!!!"
(repeat 4x)
Coolest tunning ever ngl there should be a band using this tunning as a charasteristic sound
Been lovin every ep of Sonic Boom and got worried I'd missed an episode haha so hype for this show
Didn't think it'd turn into a badass hardcore song at the end lmao Vocals give me a very light Every Time I Die vibe.
rob knocked it out of the park this episode more than other episodes
Andrew screams "protect your neck", IRL sudden gust of wind slams my door.
They're too powerful
Been watching a lot of sonic boom videos recently and I must say you two dudes are an absolute vibe keep it up 😊 🤘
I’m on mushrooms and y’all made this specifically for me I know you did y’all are everything when y’all went in on hip hop I was like damnnnn my nighassss
Love the tunes, love the video.
Also it's time to talk about the hair dude
1:28 That's the song that plays when the Mysterious Stranger shows up in Fallout.
I love how the double bass is just chillin
It’s fascinating to see Rob in music director mode. Andrew tends to be the person driving structure a lot of the time in their colons, so it’s really fun to see him doing it this time.
Yet another banger!!!
The tone on that first breakdown was filthy, totally ripped.
Sonic Boom on Rob's channel this week? (Partially) This is awesome!!!
I love to play in open tunings. Not as weird as this obviously, but still quite different, like Bb Bb Db Gb Bb Db, or C F C F C F, or Db Ab Db Db Ab Db. You can make some really cool stuff out of wacky tunings sometimes.
Those are boring tunings tho. Too many same notes so you'd have to do crazy reaches with your fingers to solo or do a melody.
I like open tuning that already make a full chord. But to be honest the standard tuning just brought down 3 or 4 half steps is cool. I even like going up a half step, so it's F standard. As if you have the cappo on the 1st fret but it's better in tune and you've got a couple more higher notes because there isn't a wasted fret.
My favourite tuning of all time is C G C Eb G D, it gives an all hope is lost type of feeling, really dark open chord, and I love it.
i like to play in DADEAD because my dad is dead
7:24 is the best thing ive seen in my life
This has brought me so much joy, it rocked
I love this tuning
This tuning was genuinely SO COOL
10:13 - Scarlxrd more activated
Also, how I missed this show, funniest and most wholesome people ever!
Hey Rob, just wanted to tell you that you are a big inspiration! I bought my first guitar about a year ago (not yours sry, just got a cheap beginner model xP) and it's crazy how far I've already come in that short amount of time! Even make some of my own music now :)
Well, just wanted to thank you for doing what you do
Love these sonic boom episodes!!!!
This is amazing. 😂😂
I love this series.
You guys are awesome and i love this show
Andrew: I'ma Give Rob the most Out of left field Unplayable tuning possible.
Rob: I just wanna hear Andrew make a pretty song :(
0:45 undone the sweater song sounding😭
You two almost invented Black Metal there for a minure.
that clean guitar riff is so sick
*Sonic Youth has entered the chat*
You two are just amazing lol I love you dudes
you guys are awesome.
amazing as always❤
This video kind of validates my favourite tuning, dadcae. I still feel like an outsider but at least there's more weirdos outside now. Thanks for the video
didn't snowing use that tuning?
@@copsarebastards I'm not too sure what that is, but I borrowed it from a song called havoc in the forum, by ttng
@HolySmokesTheSquire snowing was a midwest emo band. Similar to ttng but more yelly and heavy and a bit messier
@@copsarebastards sounds like I need to check these guys out, thanks!
I never know what you all are going to come up with! I'm going to play around with both those tunings!
from a bro to another bro, going bold is okay! don't worry too much
This is the perfect song for northern Minnesota... love it
30 years later, all us 60 year olds gonna be calling out parts in songs as the badger badger part lmao
Episode idea. Rob should perform live with an improve jazz band on guitar. (Or maybe a blues band if jazz is too far out there for him). Rob seems to be pretty flexible, it would be fun to see him stretch his musical abilities to the limits in front of a jazz crowd.
That tunning sound so creepy good
Oh my god i wasn't expecting to ever see Rob and Andrew be inspired by Wu Tang 😂 🤩🤩 🤣 I absolutely love every second of this
10:57 For a moment I thought he said "put on some clothes" and I was about to say "never!" 😂😂😂
y'all wild af, I love it
...only problem is there's no bees 'cause it's too cold. That guitar tuning is amazingly usable.
It's so chilly! 🥶🧤
I love everything about this.
That was awesome!!!!
I love the new Kaonashi song y’all made
Time to enjoy more nonstandard tunings
