  • Across the many appearances of the Daleks from throughout classic and modern Doctor Who, there have been a diverse variety of different Dalek spaceship designs. In this video, we will be taking a brief look at each of the most prominent Dalek spaceships, from the earliest Dalek exploration ships to the most recent top-of-the-line post-Time War Dalek saucers.

I kind of think that the DARDIS was a fairly late design in one version of Dalek history. As in, shortly before the Time War, the Daleks made an attempt to retroactively eliminate the Doctor early in his own history. That version of Dalek history might have been unmade, hence why we stop seeing DARDISes after First Doctor's era.

I never liked the idea that Daleks can fly from space through atmosphere and onto a planet. It turns the entire species into micro versions of the traditional flying saucer with an alien sitting under a domed cockpit.
      Which feels silly.

  • @liamc9998

It’s an interesting thought of Daleks sometimes stealing other species ships / crafts to use for their own purposes.
Personally speaking, I’ve always thought the Crucible from the end of season 4 was one such thing they stole and then repurpose for their own uses. For if you look, and take into account, much of the interior of the Crucible, you notice a lot of elements that don’t really fit the idea that this place was purpose fit for Daleks. Most of the station is very industrial and we see multiple sections within which seem like they could only be accessed / used by humanoids.
It’s been my head canon for a while that the Daleks just stole the station from some other civilisation because it was a suitable platform to effectively mount the Reality Bomb.

I think it’s almost a kind of boast to the show’s longevity that one of its recurring villains have been using classic flying saucers since before they had became ‘retro’ in any way. It’s a quiet little point of pride, like how they still use sound effects dating back to the ‘60s.
My favorite is the imperial Dalek design, but I like it being unique to that faction, so I wouldn’t take it over the flying saucers.

  • @Absolia24

Nothing is more classy than a saucer, I’m so glad they decided to bring them back for New Who. And the theory that some of the wackier ship designs might have been commandeered or stolen from other species is a good one I hadn’t thought of before!

I remember reading in the Dalek History book that the early Daleks on Skaro didn't have a lot to work with in terms of discovering space travel. Using methods learned from Thal or Kaled Missiles as the basis for rocket travel, they failed again and again to get off Skaro. Hell, they once jumped the gun with Hyperspace once they did manage to break through Skaro's atmosphere. Using it caused a huge explosion, because the Dalek Emperor wanted to run before it could walk. If Daleks were capable of being mortified at the time in the city below, we'll never know. It is even suggested that the Daleks were essentially "Hitchhiking" across the Galaxy on board alien vessels and had outside help to learn space travel.
I personally find that the Saucer-ships aren't my favorite. It's so generic, and imo conflicts with how we view the "Greys" IRL and all the history associated with flying Saucers. You could argue that the Daleks exploited another race of Grey aliens as a coverup and blame all of their wrongdoings on them, since it would be fitting for the Dalek race to do that, interfering with human history and our perceptions of the facts regardless of damage or consequences to the timeline. But I prefer the non-saucer ships instead.
