Perhaps the most misleadingly named of the fantasy races, bugbears are the hairy goblinoid boogeymen that have stalked the bestiaries since the very first edition of D&D. Now in 5th edition we get a chance to play the fuzzy beasties for ourselves. What are they? How do they play? Grab your talking trophy heads and follow us into the cave as we go through everything you need to know about bugbear 5e!

I made a Bugbear ranger Swarmkeeper. A very literal BUG BEAR! He gave up eating humans in favor of having a sweet tooth for honey and goodberry jam. Want to multi-class him to barbarian path of wild magic since one of the random effects is to summon giant hornets. When he rages the bees also rage! It's too fun of a build.

Good job! I’m reminding myself to check 3:30 for after combat ritual and to keep watching from there onwards for the appearance and good reasons for why this boogeyman from the woods is traveling alongside the party

Flark the Monk (Way of the Shadow) / Rogue (Swashbuckler) and Actor. (Eberron)
Born and raised in the ruins of the Great Crag, Flark grew up in an environment where tribal combat between goblinoids was common. Being less brawny than most of his bugbear kin (but also more perceptive and astute), young Flark took an early interest in the fighting techniques that the smaller goblinoids used to war with each other and adapted them to his long, wiry frame and penchant for stealth. As he learned and trained in these methods, he came to understand them as a uniquely cultural practice of the goblin-kind, even collecting bits of lore of the more obscure goblinoid fighting arts (like those of the fabled Hobgoblin Iron Shadows).
The Daughters of Sora Kell arrival at the crag occurred just as Flark was coming of age and, in an attempt to prove himself, he (and some of his fellow bugbears) were among the first beings who helped the hags infiltrate and conquer the Great Crag in an (almost) bloodless revolution. The Daughters brought a more functional social order and culture to those living in the Crag and the rest of Droaam, and for his efforts Sora Maenya (The Fist of the Daughters) gifted Flark with "The Shadow of Sora Kell", a magical cloak that enhances his (already substantial) skill at stealth (Cloak of Elvinkind).
After the nation of Droaam was founded, a renaissance of culture sprang up among the beings of that land. Seeing an opportunity to showcase a part of that culture (the martial arts), Flark traveled to the City of Towers to express the artistic side of what he learned as an actor, fight choreographer, and stunt person in the theaters of Sharn.
    (Setting Notes)
Licensed performer in the "Sanctuary (Theatre) Troupe" of House Phiarlin.
    Lives in Torchfire (Lower Menthis).
Publicly teaches "goblin scrap'in" as an extracurricular activity for Morgrave University at The Commons.
Enemy of Allain, a ponce elvish actor who was publicly humiliated in an altercation.
Owed a favor from the Boromar Crime Family (for Allain's humiliation).

I've been playing in a gestalt campaign since 2021, before the bugbear rewrite. My bugbears Frost Giant slave name is Hvítr Mús which means bright and colorless mouse in Jotunise (giant speak). Mús pronounced "Meus" is an albino bugbear Yeti (Bear) totem barbarian and Runic Knight. I play the tank/ front line control in my party with glaive/polearm master/sentinnel. When I giant size I stand 16 feet tall and occupy 4 squares. With 15' reach. My favorite surprise attack is called Mús in a box. This is where I hide in a small giftwrapped box that only a small creature could get into and wait to be unwrapped. It's gained so much notariety that the famous minstrel Justin Limbertake wrote diddy of it as a warning to opening gifts with unknown contents. My 37 page backstory can not express how much I love Mús, but my tattoo of him will. Bugbear 4 life people! All of my future character will be from purposefull breeding with Mús lineage. You know the saying, once you go bugbear...

My bugbear is going to be a barbarian named Grokni, a larger bugbear than some with years of fighting prowess built from gladiator style combat trials to honor Hruggek. He has left that arena after the others in the party bested him and he was given a choice to join them or be killed.

Thanks helped me make my super fun bugbear: Bedbug is a boogeyman and nightmare under the bed. Some feywild bugbears come to the material plane to find a quite place to sleep, eat and do nothing. These are the monsters under the bed that children fear and to appease will feed and keep secret or parents might find an empty child’s room some morning. They are given the dark gift of second skin… when ever they are within 60 foot of a child they take on the corpse like visage of the same child.
Bedbug is currently looking for a nice bed as his last child grew up. He did quite like her and grew to protect her and sing her to sleep, when he wasn’t threatening to eat her….which he would have never done.

I made a Bugbear Ranger who is actually more on the small side. This got her mercilessly picked on by her fellow Bugbear so she chose to sharpen her stealth skills and became rather skilled with a crossbow. She's not exactly friendly, but she's less destructive than a typical Bugbear and sees the benefits in teamwork, especially when it means less work for her. She has a heavily curated list of people who has slighted her and most importantly insulted her height, they'll be the first ones to wake up with a belly full of crossbow bolts.

    Bugbear Race (MMotM)
Halberd reflavored as a giant ass morningstar.
    5 levels of Ancestral Barbarian
    5 levels of Hunter Ranger
2 levels of Fighter (if you value nova damage more than utility and defense) or Ranger 7 for Multiattack Defense.
2 levels of whatever you didn't pick before
Ranger gives us Expertise in Athletics, Defensive Fighting Style, Longstrider, Goodberry and Pass without Trace. PWT doesn't interfere with raging because it is used outside of combat and it will help us secure a surprise round, possibly giving us two rounds of attacks with +2d6 on each attack that lands. The other two spells don't require concentration or casting spells. Heck you could even rage=feed a goodberry to a party member that went down.
Hunter Ranger with Giant Killer consistently weaponizes our Reaction because as an Ancestral Barb, the enemy will REALLY want to attack us. And then we get to attack in return. Round after round after round. That is now 4 consistent attacks per round. All with Advantage and at level 8.
Multiattack Defense pairs perfectly with the tactic we have going on of pulling aggro.
Fighter gives us action surge and a fighting style (Great Weapon Fighter).
If you used all your attacks and Action Surge, you could potentially shove an enemy 25 ft backwards and off a cliff. Expertise in Athletics combined with Advantage on Athletics checks is insane.
    Polearm Master
    Great Weapon Master
Bak the Gladator. An ex-slave that fights against slavery.
    Athletics (Exp)
    Intimidate
    Acrobatics (background)
    Performance (background)
    Stealth (Bugbear)

Im playing a bugbear vengeance paladin that was left orphaned from his clan as a cub and rescued from death by an elven heiress.
Im loving this gameplay; though he's not the sneakiest(disadvantage with armor) or smartest cabbage in the patch!
I gave him the blessed warrior fighting style beacuse we dont have a cleric in the field.
But his reach and strength and care for the others that want to care back have been a joy to play!
Not just a fuzzy dim honorable beast... but a ruthless one to boot!

Currently trying to create a Bugbear Barbarian Rogue for a campaign placed in Eberron. His back story is fairly plain. Bald, unnatural grey skin and piercing ice blue eyes and an intimidating top heavy but almost hazy frame. He was a mercenary bugbear with his brother in the last war and they were both caught in the mist. Losing all memories and his brother. Daavn is lost and continues to search for his brother. He finds he relies more on his inate abilities to hide his presence, which seemed to have only increase since the events of the Mourning, to make his way through the world of eberron. In flashes of pain and recollection of his brothers voice he lashes out in rage. He is slowley guided to an unkown goal by what at times seems to be memories of his brothers voice but could also be warnings in disguise. His mission find his brother, find his memories.
But at a rlly slow pace my guy iz lazy as hell.

Tldr: Bugbear, haunted one background, batlemaster fighter, Unearthed Arcana tunnel fighting style, polearm master, great weapon master, sentinel. Rp his cannibal tendency to be flesh of any intelligent species. Cooked like Hannibal Lecter would.
Long ago the goblins practiced dark magic and worshipped an Old one from the Far Realm. In their ignorance they tried to summon the Old one to the material plane. When the Old one fealt what it's subjects were trying, it resisted and splintered off the part connected in ritual. This seed found a newborn bugbear baby boy, a host it claimed. Inside the baby the seed took sprout, their conciousness merged growing together. Short years later this strange tribe member and his pack packmates where whisked away by planar forces to an infernal hellscape of twisted dark caverns, sheer cliffside and blasted dark rock. The pack had to keep it together, find a way home. To this end Skiggaret fought and hid from many dangers before finaly finding a way home. Returning with trophies to honor the Gods but banished from the tribe as a cursed abomination, for in those tunnels of sharp blasted hell the seedling emerged twisting and piercing the host flesh it ripped it's way into the enemy ranks like a torrent of living shrapnel before returning to the host's form. Skiggarets pack was in shock from the terror. When they told the elders what they had witnessed, the elders whispered of long cursed bloodlines and rejected their God as it had them before. Loneliness and hunger drove the outcast to adventure, and the coin drove his hedonistic desires and cannibalistic diet upon which he feasted with his unwitting fellow adventurers with gold and silver plate wear and utensils, taken from a long ago devoured King.

My bugbear was a escaped gladiatorial beast.
    He was a rogue/barbarian.
I had this HB rogue subclass, the Hoodlum, that is all about dirty fighting and eschew finesse weapons for sneak attack. I used a Great Sword.
And another HB subclass for barb, the Reaver, that is all about corruption and flesh eating. When raging he causes his profficiency bonus as extra necrotic damage and heals the same ammount. Double that in a crit or when below 25% hp.
I even got a HB fighting style through a feat: Merciless
When I down an enemy, all enemies that saw I doing it must make a wis save throw with DC 8 + Str + Prof and be frightened until the end of turn on a fail.
That HB material is available in the Unfinished Business mod for Solasta.
I got to Rogue 6/ Barb 5, and the guy was basically a slasher monster straight from an horror movie.

Seems out of place, but give it a chance and read.
Level 8/9 Ultra Sprite Fear and Poison Coffeelock. You get your own poison ranger. Read the stat block for Sprite and really focus on the shortbow attack carrier.
A full combat familiar with 3 attacks a turn, a nasty poison carrier to those attacks 100 foot flying speed, and good AC supported by a terror inspiring Form of Dread with a Menacing second attack every turn.
4x Attack rolls, 2x Fear effects, and 3x Poison effects each turn.
    3 Warlock/Undead/Chain
    - Dread Form
    - Investment of the Chain Masters
    - gets YOUR save DC and triggered attack
    - "unarmored sprite" -1AC
    5 Sorcerer/Shadows(in case you go to 6)
    - Menacing feat.
    - Twinned Haste!
    - Coffeelock
Unarmored Sprite with Mage armor = 17AC
Sprite takes reaction attack when you use a bonus action and it uses your spell save DCs. With haste this adds another attack and brings AC to 19. Upto three attacks per round.
16sp worth of short rests(4 hours) provide a full combat of resources. Only 2SP needed in the combat, the rest is through bonus slots. With enough bonus slots built up can repeat this combat 3 times without using any other resources.
Precast Mage Armor and Longstrider on Sprite.(4sp)
Precast Gift of Alacrity and Longstrider on self.(4sp) Consider precasting Flock of Familiars.
    1st Round
    Action - Twin Haste(2+5sp)
    Bonus - Dread Form
Haste Action - Attack w fear effect -or- replace with Menacing
    Sprite - 2x Attacks w poison
    2nd through 10th Round
    Bonus - command sprite
    Action - Attack w Fear
    Haste - Replace with Menacing
Sprite - 3x attacks with poison
    *4 attacks, 2 fear, 3 poison*
+2 poison attacks Flock of Familiars.
One more level of Sorcerer adds the ability to summon Hounds of Ill Omen with their chance to knock people prone, also via your spell save DC. If entering battle with spell slots to burn these are cheap to summon, have pact tactics advantage, and are self controlling once summoned, adding as many trip attacks to your fights as you want. Thier save is vs Str, so great for weak caster and sneaky types.
Giving the Sprite items with which it can cast Hex adds damage and helps lower enemy saving throws.
Flock of Familiars says the familiars follow the rules and options of Find Familiar spell, which for you allows the summoning of Sprite, Quasit, Imp and Psuedodragon with other bonuses. It also costs the same SP to store a slot for as summoning a hound and lasts way longer. Can be precast so even as a base level spell you enter combat with two more sprites, so two more poison attacks each turn vs Con. You have 5 slots of that level.
Take to Warlock 6 and Sorcerer 14 for flavorful compliments to the build(120ft teleports and an escape death feature) or you can combine it with...(literally anything or...)
    Bugbear
    Knight of Solamnia
    11 Fighter Cavalier/Tunnel Fighter
    Weilding a pike
    Polearm Master
    Piercer
Do first level as a fighter, then the 9 levels of horror inspired villainy above before returning to fighter.
Will sacrifice occasional bonus attack from Sprite for tunnel fighter whirling dervish.
Any party will quickly recognize buffing the Sprite as the equivalent to buffing a party member, certainly in terms of temp HP and such.
Addition feats through training should include Great Weapon Master, Inspiring Leader, Defensive Fighting Style, Med/Heavy Armor Master. There are so many others that would just add to the character at this point.
You are a Lu Bu on horse back, with an insane toxic satelite, and you'll be siccing the hounds or sprites on those who run.
