      Since they use the recordings so much in criminal cases, they need better audio and visual equipment in most cases you see in recordings used in court. I wonder how much defunding the police affects this?

      In born and raised in shelby NC, this police department dont have these kind of cases ever, it's not a big city it's a small ,country town. They probably cant justify an exspensive camera for such a small town where the biggest thing to happen here is the occasional murder... it's mostly just drug dealing and thieves

      Well...you're not looking at a camera. You're looking at a screen with a moving image on it that was captured by a camera.
      The other reason is this is probably camera one and so they just left it as camera and in another room that camera probably says camera 2.

      I believe that is a standard template, and they have it in case of multiple cameras (can be labelled Camera 1, 2, 3, etc)

      That's where you're supposed to program "Camera #01" or "room 3".
      The default in 90s, my aunt had one such cameras and you could even write
      "the end" at the end.... redundant I know

    Something about a calm and calculated killer is 100x more terrifying than any other kind of criminal to me. I mean what kind of person can stroll into a church, hang around for 15 minutes, and then murder several people in cold blood for no real reason, and not even be a little rattled or panicked, like its just a normal day for them.

      Oh by killswitch I mean I don't have a turn off swit h for when I need to use violence, I'm either all in or extremely resistant to applying such means. I hate hurting people and due to being a smaller stature I've had to use my reflexes(95%) and various trainings to really hurt people and it haunts my dreams. I'd rather talk out problems or even agree to disagree, but try to rob/hurt me and I'll likely kill or hospitalized you or die trying and then run 10 blocks bleeding... I've done that btw.

    Can’t believe it’s been 8 years since this happened. This story went international, I was over in Ireland on vacation when the news broke, just insane SC is rarely in the news, such a small state out of the way, couldn’t believe it.

Maybe enough to bring plausible deniability into video evidence based on expressions.

      These places get their budget from the city which comes from the taxpayer. They only have a certain amount of money for upgrades. The last thing they need to upgrade are cameras in an interrogation room. For what reason do they need HD cameras?
      Just because people have HD camera doorbells doesn't mean anything. If the police department was built today they would have HD cameras. But there is no sense in upgrading something and spending possibly millions of dollars to do the entire police force for that City for no freaking reason.
      You must be young since you don't understand how budgets and renovations work.
      By the way, the importance of having an HD camera in your home security system is so that you can clearly make out the perpetrator. In an interrogation they already know who the perpetrator is.

      I remember them using Cassette tapes with me in 2011 lol, I always thought it had something to do with keeping all the archive footage the same format but i'm not 100% sure. That obviously changed or was never a thing at some point.

You can get HD cameras for less than $20, in bulk even less. This would benefit many people, on both the law enforcement side and the defendant side. They can easily be hardwired into the existing wiring.

      Doing upgrades like that costs millions in some cases and their budgets barely cover things as it is. There's no need for HD footage in an interrogation room either so I imagine all of those are the valid reasons why.

      I believe that's the EXACT reason it's blurred. FBI agents need to work undercover sometimes. To be recognized by a Mexican cartel or Baltimore vicious crew would mean execution. I CLEARLY REMEMBER reading that Officer Marcellus 'Marty' was screaming when cops tried to bust in the Pennsylvania Ave. apartment and the drug dealers executed him. Very close to home and very near my stomping grounds. I really felt his terror. Sheesh! Yea, they need to blur the interrorgators' faces!

      I dont think so. Im pretty sure he just walked in and shot. I have tried to attend those churches (mainly bc of the music) and they wouldnt let me. I was okay with that tho. I used to drive my 4 wheeler over and listen to them sing while I sat outside...NOT this church but one like it.

    Crazy to think this happened right after graduation down here. Left July 15th to go on a cruise and didn't come back til the 22nd and came back to just this all over the news. We had no idea anything happened until we got cell service back as we were pulling into the harbor. Such a horrible person who rocked our community down here and i doubt anyone here will feel any sense of justice served until his death sentence is carried out.

    Comments mentioning camera quality forget that the FBI has to record and save ALL interrogations. A 1080p high quality surveillance is just not realistic when you have to consider the file space all of these recordings would take up.

      @@tylerd1297 I guess my response was deleted because I quoted a source but the source stated that about 35% of cases are ruined by the investigation/interrogation process. The Reid technique has proven to be most effective in solid interrogations, which these detectives did not use. Not clarifying his background gives him opportunity for mitigating factors later. Also, the detectives were stumbling over one another which can cause the suspect to say he was confused and didn't thoroughly understand. There should've been one lead detective. I have more issues with this interview but I don't want to bore you. Lol.
      And for the record, I LOVE THE CHANNEL! I'm just critically thinking for myself. I wasn't trying to offend anyone.

    How is it that in the 21st century with all of our technology, they still can’t make decent audio on interrogations?? You’d think for any other reason it’d be helpful in court to convict people. There’s ALWAYS so much background noise and just static noise and audio levels are so low. The technology is obviously available but interview rooms still sound like the 70’s.

    its interesting how the movies get it wrong about police interrogation rooms. Cops screaming at the killer, flipping over chairs. In the real world, like these guys, are nice, calm, cordial, friendly; they make it easy for the killers to spill all the details without asking for a lawyer. And its a smart way to get information. I'm sure families of the victims would see this as disrespectful.

    It's so hard to wrap my head around how broken this person's brain is. The fact he hadn't told his family or a friend teacher/counselor..just shows how broken his mind is he doesn't even really have any examples of why he feels the way he does. But he knows he can't tell his closest connections because how they would feel about him and his feelings but he still felt and believed in his mind this is what he had to do .

    Terrifying. Crazy to think I was on a ghost tour in Charleston just a few blocks away when this happened. We didn't know what was going on but there were sirens and a search helicopter above us. We were trying to leave and the roads were blocked off. It was such an unbelievable tragedy

    Every question they asked him was to get him to say something that would seal the 'hate crime' fate...never, ever talk to LE w/o your attorney present. He would have gotten out of the death sentence if he was prompted by a lawyer to shut up about most of what he willingly hung himself with.

    Anyone else hear a cat meowing in the video? I heard it earlier than that, but 54:17 or so it sounds like it. edit: it was the chair squeaking. i didn't notice since i stopped watching the video and was just listening and, for a while, was frantically looking for my cat.
