Starcraft 3 will always be out of reach, i cant deal with a bad starcraft 3. Dawn of war 3 was so bad it killed the franchise. I'd rather i never get it than letting some greedy company tainted what little legacy it has.

I think there was a lot of neglected information that went unexplored here. Like how the Heart of the Swarm expansion for SC2 introduced one of the most boring and imbalanced periods in the competitive scene, or how the game went free-to-play in 2017 (not too long after the release of the Legacy of the Void expansion); and how the game did receive balance patches, cosmetics (albeit locked behind micro-transactions that funded some competition contracts), and how the game even had a massive editor update that introduced the ability for fans to make custom campaigns officially, that even supported save files.
8 minutes isn't even close enough to the amount of time needed to dissect the history SC2 alone. Not to mention the series as a whole, or the original game.
BTW, Warcraft was also a RTS series. So Starcraft was not the first foray into the genre for Blizzard.

Agreed. Arguably Brood War or Wings of Liberty was definitely the peak of the series.

The "modding" scene has always been a backbone of Starcraft. To this day, there's still a solid niche of people creating & playing custom maps for Brood War (it could really use some updates to expand its potentials, but the community has made things like SCA to let you save/load progress in customs between sessions at least).
To say nothing of SC2, of course.

Honestly, I think StarCraft II esports is in an amazing spot *because* Blizzard took their hands off of the wheel.
We’re still seeing new pro players, we’re still seeing new amazing tournaments and new metas emerge. With how much bullshit Blizzard is going through, I think leaving StarCraft alone is the best thing they can do. They ruined Diablo with Immortal, they ruined Warcraft with reforged, they ruined Overwatch with OW2, but StarCraft’s name hasn’t been tainted the same way, and I’d much rather keep it that way.

    • @ericandruszko7563

The only major thing they can do to make it better is put in a proper offline LAN mode like they should have originally. That way, tournaments don't have to deal with stupid server lag, and people with spotty internet can play with each other easier at home (which is still a larger group of folks than most people think it is, even in America).

and asia play mostly gacha games and RPG games. RTS have been dead for most people since long ago. starcraft 1 is my favorite game. played it for many year when I was a kid.
people that leaved blizzard and tried to make other RTS resulted in crappy games.
the best example is Age of Empires 4 when people complained it looked bad graphically. and even featured a ultra low setting.
but Microsoft was right in what they were doing. the were not targeting kids or you adults with RTX3080 cards that when flashy graphics.
The average player of age of empires is over 30 and plays on an old computed a lot of them on intel integrated graphics that is why they market the game not with some raytracing but with an ultra low mode able to run on any old computer.
the only persons I know that bought age of empires 4 is my dad and uncle both 60 and 54.

Right now in Korea, Brood war had hit its new post-progaming era peak and has been beating league in terms of viewership and has been #1 in Afreeca (mainstream korean stream website over Twitch) for past 2 years. It's largely thanks to twitch chess-scene-like revival and formation of streamer teamleagues and likes. Even before that, viewership has been strong with ASL finals hitting 100k+ viewers most of the time.
You can always revive a "dead" or "dying" scene with great content. People will follow that.

This year a new balance patch system was "designed", meaning pro players make balance decisions (1patch so far, which improved especially the zvp matchup greatly). Besides tournaments you can find games in seconds across all regions and leagues + a new map pool comes out every few months

    • @cell4224
      @cell4224 Год назад

The problem is that all the original devs of SC1 and SC2 have left to form their own companies. There are no experienced RTS devs left at blizzard and finding competent replacements will be difficult due to the relative lack of new games in that genre. It mirrors the "sprites vs 3d models" situation in the industry where there's simply not enough people left with experience in making sprite art for it to be financially viable as an artstyle since you have to redevelop these lost skills and techniques from scratch.
MS have already experienced this problem before. They had great success with Killer instinct 2013 as an Xbox one exclusive, but are unable to develop a sequel due to the lack of new western devs with fighting game experience. That game was spearheaded by the old guard that came together in Double helix/Iron galaxy to resurrect that series, but they have also left for greener pastures.

@@cell4224 There's a good chance MS might outsource SC3 or at least hire a team like Relic or Creative Assembly to help work on it. When it comes to RTSs in IPs they own, they've tended to outsource primary development or at least contract co-developers. Most recently, they did this with Relic for AoE4, and despite some launch issues, it's been a really good game.

Another thing: I don't get how the write concludes that the cancelation of an unannounced first person shooter is the death of the franchise. Canceling prototypes is normal in game dev. And as he mentioned, SC2 came out after StarCraft Ghost was canceled. So canceling an announced third person shooter is fine but canceling an unanounced first person shooter equals death of the franchise? That makes no sense to me.

It is downright SHAMEFUL how modern blizzard has all but smoked out one of it’s former big 3 pillars. They hide Starcraft 1 and 2 at the way back end of the Blizzard store and don’t even feature it on Blizzcon banners in favor of WoW spin-offs as if they are actively trying to hide its existence.
In anyways though, it is a blessing and a curse. Starcraft is probably better dying with the dignity it still has rather than get dragged through the mud by NuBlizz

    >Create one mediocre campaign with redeeming elements and two horrible ones
    >Refuse to do anything new with the series (see the death of StarCraft: Ghost and that multiplayer FPS set in it)
Also in the end people play SCII for the custom maps and co-op commanders which from my P.O.V. should replace skirmish/multiplayer because it gives people variety, new gameplay style and tactical/strategic choices.

Which screams to me either they don't care about it anymore, they have no idea what to do with it on a story level(Then just do spin offs) or they don't have the money and are relying on cash cow games like Diablo Immortal, Overwatch and COD.

I think it'd be hard to play a 3rd installment; I've always been in it for the campains, fun stories with memorable characters, with great voice acting and legendary cinematics. The direction it took over the last 1&1/2 expansions really left a sour taste in my mouth. Felt like it was written by people who had nothing to do with SC1's story, or just wanted to get it over with. The whiplash from Stukov and Dugaulle looking down on the realities of war to Kerrigan becoming a fiery space goddess with the power of friendship to fight the big bad has big "anime original ending" vibes.

I feel you bro. The sequels (to Brood War) feel like they were written by someone who was in a happy relationship, while the first two games feel like they were written by someone going through a divorce. What I mean is that the first games had grounding and grit to them, whereas the sequels feel flighty and fluffy.
Also, I find it pretty egregious that the plot element that drives the sequels was introduced in a *secret mission* in Brood War. Like did you ever feel that Duran and the hybrids would be the main focus of any sequel back in the day? The impression I got after finishing Brood War was that Kerrigan would be the primary antagonist of the sequel, and not someone Raynor still wanted to save.

I wanted so badly for Selendis to assassinate Artanis to become the next protoss leader once he went off the deep end and suggested they sever their nerve cords. The UED could've buffed Terran. More than 10 years in and we are still hearing people crying "DeD gAeM". Starcraft 2 has settled into its niche, there is still an extremely active and healthy E-sports scene, a dedicated community who have been playing and watching the games for decades, and a interest base for modding and custom content. The game is very much community driven now, people in the community make maps which get selected and show cased through the team liquid map contest and TLMC tournaments, and then get incorporated into tournaments and updated into ladder play. There is now even a community leaders balance team who have implemented balance tweaks into the game, and now in my opinion it is in the best state it has ever been in.
It doesn't need to be the most popular game/esport of all time to be thriving and healthy. It has plateaued and found its interest group, and now the game direction has been passed over to the community to keep it fresh with new maps and design tweaks. Its not an apocalypse scenario for Starcraft and the RTS genre will still continue to live on. Some people over obssess about popularity and feel like something is failing because of how it measures up against something else, really a thing can be great as its own stand alone thing without being the most popular thing in the world. Hockey is not as popular as football, does that mean hockey is a dead game and failing as a sport? No, it is still thriving within its interest group and adding value to peoples lives. Starcraft was still an extremely profitable endeavour, it has been the source of many millions of dollars in revenues from different sources, people have built careers around starcraft, tournaments continue to exist with $100,000+ prize pools. Seems like Starcraft is still very much alive and well, all just depends on your perspective. There have always been "the sky is falling" types when it comes to Starcraft from both within and outside the community, but in reality there are very few games as old as Starcraft with the same kind of ongoing interest and support.

Good video but the RTS genre absolutely did not become “oversaturated to the point of disinterest” and MOBAs are not RTS. It was always kind of a niche genre and increased due to various factors, among them the big devs that started the genre like Westwood met fates like being gobbled up and shut down by EA. Or like Blizzard, became a “games as a service” company and sidelined their own franchises to milk subscription schemes. The point is they largely didn’t continue making games and the genre’s struggling popularity over the years has basically always been a lack of new games. Because the genre always lacked attention, there were never really any studios doing current work with living communities, rather it’s all old classics, modding, and the occasional new entry that never gains more than a niche following.

Another thing to consider is that Activision-Blizzard does not like competition within their own projects. They killed off "Project Titan", their next-gen MMO in order to avoid internal competition with WoW; they practically fought tooth and nail against WoW-Classic until the Nostalrius project proved it would be popular. Call of Duty is a major title for Activision-Blizzard and from an Activision-Blizzard bean-counter perspective, a Starcraft FPS could cannibalize sales and resources that could otherwise go into another CoD game. Remember, CoD has a several year development period and Activision-Blizzard has multiple teams working on different CoD games so that they can spit one out every year.
Say Call of Duty sells 10 million copies any given year and a Starcraft FPS shows up and now CoD sells 7 or 8 million copies while SC sells 3-4 million. It doesn't matter that they netted more sales, the CoD project lost 20-30% of its market. This means the CoD team needs to get downsized or moved over, resources reallocated etc. This may interrupt their ability to launch titles on a yearly basis. Then investors start questioning the health of CoD, not seeing the bigger picture. I imagine investors see this like a volatile medieval alchemy experiment, converting lead to gold; once you've got a formula that works, you don't mess with it out of fear of blowing yourself up or being unable to recreate the magic.

Starcraft could have expanded into first person shooter, turn-based, rpg, everything Warhammer is shooting their load at right now. But blizzard could have done it a decade and a half earlier with better results, with a dedicated set of teams to each one of those games, a marketing strategy and budget that puts Games Workshop to shame, and a gigantic overlap in audience . Starcraft and how it was treated is one of the truly gigantic blunders that have ever been made in video gaming history ever, let alone by such a gigantic Studio

Starcraft lore, by no means shallow, is way more accessible than 40K even if it's not as satisfying in the long run. These two franchises could have played off of each other and made themselves both Millions
