The Alien Vs. Predator Games Are WAY Better Than The Movies

  • The Alien and Predator franchises are some of the most well known in movie history. Spawning several different Alien and Predator sequels, comics, video games and merchandise, it seems people can't get enough of their favorite monsters. So much so that we eventually got the crossover fans everywhere had been wanting for years, Alien vs Predator. But to many, this new installment didn't quite live up to expectations. Mainly because the Alien vs Predator video games that preceded the movie were far superior.

While an RTS game and thus not similar in genre, I grew up loving AVP Extinction. Each playthrough has its own merits and could even be terrifying in their own ways. It also set the bar (for me) pretty high on what the PredAlien would look like, only to be completely disappointed in its movie appearance.

I loved that game to no end, Especially playing as an Alien. Maybe in some ways I was 'lucky' in that I'd only ever played the RTS Extinction before then, thus I went in with no expectations since it was the first FPS style AvP game I'd played. But nothing thrilled me more than perfectly executing a plan to ambush every single pitiful human I could find without them ever knowing what was slaughtering their friends. It felt exactly how I imagined it would, and I'll never stop suggesting it to people.

Okay listen, I appreciate the attention given to the games but can we just stop and look at the first AVP movie by itself?
It's not scary, sure, but it's *fun*. Intricate shifting pyramid setting in Antarctica! Crazy predator tools against deadly xenomorph tactics against unaware and comparatively pitiful humans! Great practical effects! Awesome team up!
I swear it's like a love letter to 80s action movies without the twist the original Predator threw in of *becoming a horror film*. It's really a very good time and I'll never understand the hate it gets just because it's a different style, it's not really dumb or poorly made, it's just....fun.

I personally don't mind the first movie and I strangely find it as a companion movie piece towards Anaconda Hunt for the Blood Orchid for some reason.
The second movie is definitely just a useless Freddy vs Jason knock-off.
Although what's weird about the the movies is despite the hate they both received from certain movie makers, they've been very influential with certain events. like with the debriefing in Prometheus and the setting of "The Predator's" climax.

Great video and just a great distillation of the problem with AvP movies. I still remember losing my mind when they announced the first AvP movie and then dying a slow painful death as I watched it. I really hope with the success of Prey and Aliens Romulus, we can get a real AvP movie....with freaking Colonial Marines....not random people in a small town.
Random ending thought, I thought AvP2 was a huge step in story telling for the game. I love a good story in a movie/comic and AvP2 had one of the best imo. The way all three sides had unique story and it tied together, but this time with actual cut scenes and solid voice acting.

I’m not sure when the last time you saw the movie AvP but we, but I watched it relatively recently I liked it so much more than I did when I saw it in the theater. Maybe it’s because the Alien movies that have come out since then have… not been great. But I’d argue AvP is the 3rd or 4th best Alien movie there is. It’s better than Resurrection, Prometheus, and Covenant. Possibly better than Alien 3.
    AvP2 though is quite bad.

Don't play video games, but AvP was done right in the comics. The first mini was such a classic, all they had to do was adapt it as closely as possible for the screen and it would have been an instant blockbuster.
Instead we got crap. The 2nd had it's moments but like most of current entertainment, writers, who have no interest in the source material, are hired. Then the producers wonder why it flops.

  • @vagabundorkchaosmagick-use2898

I played the SNES, Arcade and Jaguar games, and of the three, the SNES game was my favorite. The music, the atmosphere and the art-style were amazing in 1993 and the next few years. It looks ugly now because we see it in a modern screen, but find a CRT tv and you'll see, it's awesome.

Prey sucked balls. Stupid CG-fest that had zero respect for the source (which is still a step up from previous attempt), the franchise won't survive on half-assed attempts like that. It's one of "those" movies that everyone praises and afraids to criticize, and then no one ever remembers it existed like in a week.
AvP2010 wasn't any bad, marine campaign was a top-tier Aliens content, club scene is the most memorable in whole series. And multiplayer was a blast and was active for a decade, second only to AvP2.

Capcom made a CPS2 game that could've been on the Sega Saturn. However, the film based on THAT idea was put on development hell. That draft was made on the basis of one of the movies until it was a lost gem, so the game company behind Street Fighter and Megaman didn't make any effort of it onto there, specifically on the poor statuses of arcades and the Saturn in the late 1990s. It was very cool when I was playing it for the first time.

Here's my take on a new AVP- every "level" consists of a decent-sized "open world" map (like predator: hunting grounds) in which all three factions have specific goals to complete in order to advance the plot and move on to the next map. There'd be six maps arranged in a ring (two for each faction to be most "comfortable" in): Colony (H), Refinery (H), Caves (A), Hive (A), Temple (P), Jungle (P). Additionally there would be smaller "home base" maps for each faction where players can respawn, change class selection, or fast-travel (more on those later) which would double as "Boss Maps" for the other two factions (Humans with a base of operations and a mech suit, Predators with the hunter's camp and an elder predator, Aliens with the throne room and the queen). At the center of the ring would be the final "boss battle" map on an Engineer ship, with all three factions fighting a xenomorph empress, an ancient predator, and an engineer.
When players die, their current mission progress is saved and they respawn at their "home base" map where they can choose a new class (light/medium/heavy) and fast travel to any map they've unlocked. The game can be played online or offline, with online play consisting of several game modes (story, death match, team death match, hunt, swarm, capture the flag, etc.) played on any of the 10 single-player maps.
There's a lot more in my head, but I'm just rambling into the void, so there's that.

There were many other scripts for the AVP films that would've been better than the 1 we ended up getting. People said (years later) Paul WS Anderson was NOT as big of a fan as he said he was, and being a co-writer himself got MANY elements wrong about the Alien & Predator characters. So if they had people who were TRUE fans of both franchises it probably would've been better. Plus many of those AVP games were based off of movie-scripts.

With wokeness only getting worse AVP has no chance in hell of making a new and good game.

      ...wokeness....
....all right, I'll bite. What about 'wokeness' is preventing a good AVP game?

@@johnmccarron7066 wokeness has no logic. We'll just have to wait and see what they cry about. None of their claims ever have any merit or logic to them.
Who knows what they will say, maybe:
      • Not enough gay aliens
      • Not enough characters have the right skin color
      • it's too violent
      • it's too toxicly male
      • not enough female characters
      • where's the trans representation
      • one of the alien races represents black people and that's a problem
      • why do the black marine soldiers not have afros?
      Literally could be anything 🤷‍♂️
