    There's no better time than now to be building a new PC, what with the likes of AMD and Intel squaring it off with their Zen 4 Ryzen 7000 series and 13th Generation Raptor Lake processor offerings respectively. For today's video, ALKtech checks out an oddball of an Intel motherboard offering - the ASUS PRIME Z790-P WIFI. Sporting the high-end Intel Z790 chipset but in a budget-oriented package, could such motherboards represent good value for one looking to build a new Intel Raptor Lake PC on a tighter budget? This may be a stupid question but I just want to be 100% sure before I purchase it for my first build. I know in the video you said it has a type-c front panel header, so that being said if I had a case that had a USB Type-c port on it, would i be able to plug that wire into that slot in order to make the USB-C slot on the case work? (sorry for the poor wording and grammar)

    • @ALKtech
      @ALKtech  Год назад +1

      As long as your PC case has a front panel USB Type-C port, you will be able to hook up the said port to the front panel header on this motherboard.
      On an added note, this board has a USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C front panel header - it'd be good to get a case that has a Gen 2 (instead of Gen 1) front panel connector so that you can maximise transfer speeds!

Or maybe another z790 ? my budget is around 300 for the motherboard.

    • @ALKtech
      @ALKtech  Год назад

      If you're intending to overclock, you'll have to get a board powered by the Z790 chipset, as B760 boards do not officially support overclocking, so that'll make the Z790-P WIFI the default choice, which should handle a 13600K with a small amount of overclocking just fine.
      That said, given the number of fans that you're intending to have, you'll definitely need to get a fan/RGB hub for sure - depending on the model of PC case that you're getting, some cases do come with such a fan/RGB hub preinstalled. Hope this info helps!

      @ALKtech  Год назад

      Thanks! I can't seem to find the Z790 Pro RS in Sim Lim pricelists, nor on Lazada and Shopee though, so I can't really comment on it price-wise in SG...
      That said, taking a quick glance through the specs on ASRock's website, both the Z790 Pro RS and the Z790-P WIFI are pretty similar overall, with the key difference being that the ASUS has on-board WIFI while the ASRock doesn't. The ASRock also has more M.2 slots and SATA ports and perhaps a fancier looking aesthetic with an integrated I/O shield cover and onboard RGB LEDs. Pricing wise, I'm gonna guess that the ASRock will be cheaper, seeing as the brand's modus operandi is to offer up attractive specs at much lower prices than the rest of the competition.

      @ALKtech  Год назад

      Well the PRIME Z790 is entry-level in the spectrum of Intel Z790 motherboards, where the Z790 is still a high-end chipset for Intel 13th Gen builds. This board still has features that matter in making sure high-end processors such as the 13900K can perform to their maximum potential. such as a beefier VRM setup. Also, this motherboard now supports Intel's 14th Gen "Raptor Lake Refresh" processors with a BIOS update available for download from ASUS's website!

      Regarding maxing out the RAM:
      I just took delivery of a CyberPowerPC, that I purchased from Best Buy (Black Friday sale), that has this Z790-P motherboard.
      It came with two 32GB RAM sticks (64GB, total).
      According to Best Buy's listing, the maximum RAM supported is 128GB, which I was planning to install (via two more 32GB RAM sticks).
      But your comment conveys that I should be able to run this motherboard with 192GB of RAM.
      How can I verify that my motherboard is capable of 192GB of RAM?
      Can I assume that all Z790-P motherboards are compatible? Or do I have to check for a certain version or release associated with my motherboard?
      Any information you can provide would be appreciated.
      Also, great video!
      I learned more about my motherboard than what is in the manual or on any web sites that I checked.

      @ALKtech  7 месяцев назад

      @@NoEgg4u I suspect it's because Best Buy forgot to update it's specs sheet 😅 you can refer to ASUS's QVL list here regarding memory support: www.asus.com/motherboards-components/motherboards/prime/prime-z790-p-wifi/helpdesk_qvl_memory?model2Name=PRIME-Z790-P-WIFI
      Going by what's in the list above, it seems like this board supports Corsair's 4x48GB DDR5 5200 modules. You do give up speed for capacity though, and I must caveat at larger memory capacities, compatibility (at least from my experience) tends to become a bit of a hit-or-miss at times...

    I just picked this up last week at Micro Center in a bundle. I7 13700k, 32Gb 6000 DDR5 and the z790 for $550. Only issue I had with it was that it didn't have the install DVD and I couldn't install the drivers off USB. My Win 10 flash drive was too out of date and couldn't install the drivers until it was updated and the network adapter would not work without drivers. Ended up having to make a new Win 10 install drive.

      There isn't a reset button on this board - you might wanna try clearing the CMOS by removing the CMOS battery (with the PC powered off and unplugged from the mains), and leave the PC be for a few minutes, before replacing the battery and powering it up again. You should find that the BIOS will be reset - simply restore your usual settings (XMP for memory, enable Resizable BAR etc), and hopefully the issue will go away. Yeap! You did mention that you wanted a Z790 in your new build though - if you are open to Z690 while they're still available new, I'd go for a Z690+DDR5 board instead. The Z690 and Z790 chipsets indeed have minimal differences after all, key differences being the amount of USB 3.2 and PCIe 4.0 lanes, which doesn't really translate into significant value when it comes to motherboard specs. If you can score a Z690 board on the cheap, I don't see why not!
      Do note though, that you might be faced with the minor inconvenience of needing to update the Z690 board's BIOS with a 12th Gen CPU first, before being able to use a 13900K! Of course, if the board has a feature that allows BIOS updates without needing to install a CPU/RAM/graphics card, that would save some hassle...
