hahaaha! I'm Steve Forster the bass player on this video and it was my first TV session for the BBC. The guitarist is the amazing John Cambridge, Keyboards is David Rose, drums is Russell Gillbrook and sax is Micky Donelly (???) sorry if I got the sax player wrong. Great times!!!
We didn't play on the record, we were the session musicians hired to re-record the song for the BBC TV performance. George the singer commented that they spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to record the song with LA session musicians, and how we had laid the track down in one take, and were now sitting in the pub drinking Guinness all day. We told him that for future recordings he should call us Brits and save some money ! hahaha!
Great comment. I loved this then and still do to this day- it sounds even better nearly thirty years later. Top of the Pops and a few other music programmes and Radio 1 were the only way to consume music in those days for the most part in the days of four channel terrestrial television. The fact they wrote How Will I Know and I Wanna Dance With Somebody by Whitney Houston is deeply impressive. This is a great TOTP performance.
This song was actually 1988, not 1989 like the info says, off by one year. I was born in '78 so of course I've heard this song 1000 times. It was kind of a one-hit wonder.
As a African American who listened to r&b exclusively, this was the song that introduced me into the world of pop, anyone can love this song, the lyrics really sink in so deep with me...
That’s great to hear. I’m the reverse in that I was raised on mainstream 80’s Pop & 70’s Classic Rock & thought that was all I needed. But, as I got older, I started listening to R&B and Smooth Jazz & it opened up a whole other world for me. One should never limit themself to just one type of genre cuz there is a ton of good stuff out there.
This song takes me back to a happier time in my life , when my 1st Wife and I would be awakened by this song playing on our alarm clock radio. Later on that summer right before our 5th wedding anniversary she was killed in a car accident, this song is forever in my heart and mind along with the memories of my life with Her .💔
@@chrisstevens6227 I did my second wife after 4 years found that she was cheating on me and now my third wife we've been married for 24 years . But I can never love anyone the way I did my first wife she was my soul mate , I think about all of the good times we had.
This song has everything- catchy tune, sweet romance, wonderful melody, superb sax playing, great bass, great synthesizers, wonderful singing, what could improve it? its perfect as is!!!
The total epitome of the late 80s pop.. Full synth pop sound with the sax solos, baggy clothes..such a positive feeling. This sound was on the opposite side of the musical spectrum where hair band metal was in the late 80sat this time.
Well actually, I have never particularly liked this song and I heard it again about 4 days ago and it has been stuck in my head ever since so yes, I am very sick of this song!
I Rediscovered this song just this last week can't stop listening to it! Music Video is perfect!! I love the connection between the two artists. This is a "Feel Good Song" because it makes you happy and feel good. I like this song back when it was released but I appreciate more today! Thank You for this song!
This track has such mystique. The lyrics the instrumentation the vocals BOY MEETS GIRL the melodies and key changes. Got to love the 80s. I have listened to WFaStoF so many times over the decades. So uplifting
Has a quintessential 80's sound. Does what any good song does -- makes you think back. I think I appreciate it more now than I did back in its time. As long as there are memories good songs will keep coming back.
I love this song... I remember watching 3 men and little lady as a kid and loving the end cuz of this song. I forgot all about it until I put on an 80s mix cd for a resident of mine the other day and this song came on. literally brought me back and brought tears to my eyes.
I remember the ending to that movie too and I wanted to get the song right after the movie ended I ended up going to Sam's goodies And getting the single but for some reason I lost it
This song brings back so many memories from my teens into my twenties. So glad to have been young enough to be old enough to have enjoyed the 80s music scene..
This is my number 1 karaoke song along with Madonna’s Cherish. One time after my fathers funeral, my family was at a karaoke bar. I went up to sing this song by myself n my little sister’s husband ran up on stage to sing the male part. Most special karaoke moment ever!!!!
I wish I could relive these magic times. Even if I only understood this kind of music a bit later in life. I want the euphoria those performing the song felt as they recorded it. They knew this was something new, but what they didn’t know is that is was something unique to this day. Such a unique feeling of progressive euphoria. I somehow almost nearly felt this feeling again upon hearing Keep Me Entertained by Mattie Maguire, who I knew felt an intense connection to this song and the feelings it conveys. I just want to spread the love and hope the algorithm can give us more of this.
I rediscovered this song today. Was so happy to hear it and add it to my playlist. I too miss the music of the 70s & 80s which to me was the era of some of the best music ever!
I still remember where I was at the moment I first heard this song. There are very few songs I can say that for. After hearing it again used in a retro 80's Canadian TV comedy, I fell into a musical rabbit hole searching the song and others of that vintage and beyond. I'm still falling, ... two years later.
They seem to be lipsyncing here, but try to search for "George Merrill waiting live". He plays this song with one synthesizer only, breathtakingly beautiful. :)
When My 20yo Daughter Asked Me About My Favorite Music When I Was Her Age, And That I Like 80's Music Best, The 1st Great Song I Recommended Was "Waiting For A Star To Fall". Organ, Sax, Awesome Voice. She Loves It, Too!
It was an awesome song and performance on stage. I give two thumbs up to Boy Meets Girl. I love this song a lot and I would listen to it over and over again.
Whitney Houston rejected this song. Belinda Carlisle recorded this song for her first solo album but it did not make the album. Boy Meets Girl finally decided to record the song themselves.

Andy Snitzer played the sax on the record. It's listed as an alto sax but sounds a lot to me like a tenor - and I'm a sax man.
We didn't play on the record, we were the session musicians hired to re-record the song for the BBC TV performance. whos the bass guy, great to see everyone getting into it and having fun.

Happy!
Yeah I really.wish today's songs were happy. Don't understand why today's hit have to mostly be dark, depressing and provocative.
This song is the bridge between the 80s and 90s music heritage , that's why it's to me the best song in these two. Decades
Definitely one of the most upbeat 80s songs. Brings back some of my best memories growing up.
fun fact this was the last registered song of the 1980s

But they're lip-syncing, which is what I see a lot of "I hate modern music because all they do is lip-sync" complain about.

But if you added some chorused dirty rhythm guitar you'd have pop metal.
One of the best written and produced pop songs of all time. So catchy. That saxophone too.

Eh. The 80s were weird, though. People were way too loose and cocaine a bit too abundant.
Jessica Parry glad you feel that way, it was a great times you would have loved to be part of that era!
