Engines of New York Central - Mohawk
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 2 мар 2022
- The New York Central Railroad was facing a bit of a dilemma at the start of the 20th century. Freight trains were holding up faster passenger trains out on the famed Water Level Route and elsewhere on the NYC system. These freights were often dragged by lumbering and aging 2-8-0s and mixed traffic 4-6-2s weren't providing enough speed and power. The New York Central would hop into the world of 4-8-2 steam motive power. They would nickname these engines "Mohawk" after the Mohawk River which ran along portions of the network. So how did the Mohawks get along on the New York Central Railroad? Find out in this episode!

I have a former classmate at my old school who’s favorite railroad is the New York Central, and I bet he’ll love this. This channel name is “ThatRedFolkner”
Possibly.
@Mobius1F4 Fire, Smoke and Steam
@Mobius1F4 🖒🖒🖒
ima sub then
I saw his old 97 video!
I'm just glad the the Texas and Pacific railroad was mentioned, as it is my home railroad and I have a lot of personal history with them. It is interesting that a New York Central Mohawk ended up in
Texas. I never knew that
The Texas & Pacific is another beautiful railroad.
If that T&P 2-10-4 hadn't been vandalized to the point where it was scrapped, then NYC 3001 would never have been preserved.
@@WAL_DC-6B unless if both of them survived together, somebody should have saved 3001 and preserved it somewhere before being displayed where it currently is now. And Texas & Pacific 638 would have survived and stay at the same display area today.
Those are my favorite after “The Mohawk wouldn’t quit”
4:04 - The shape of the builder's plate shows that this loco, 3037, was a product of the Lima Locomotive Works. Alvin Staufer in his book "Steam Power of the New York Central System" writes that also 3100-3124 (L4a) and 3125-3149 (L4b) were Lima-built.
The New York Central Mohawk is my favorite steam locomotive, as it was the first NYC engine I saw in person.
I have an O gauge Lionel one, great sound, and a lot of power.
Awesome! I saw both surviving nyc Mohawks! 2933 and 3001!
I’ve only seen 3001 because she’s closer to where I live.
They almost look like the Hudsons
Still amazed there’s actually two of them left. 3001 was straight up lucky getting sold to the T&P before steam on the NYC ended, and 2933 _should've_ been scrapped with the other 598 Mohawks. Shop crews just manger to keep it hidden long enough
The Niagaras and Hudsons weren't so fortunate. It's unfortunate that American citizens weren't as mobilized as the Brits were when it came time to steam preservation.
@@HHopebringer in the case of the NYCRR, blame a certain Mr. Perlman's anti-steam policy...
@SogekingSchofield503 like the only thing that resembles a Hudson is that tender
2933 slightly does resemble a Hudson albeit with the different wheel arrangement.
I appreciate the whistle information, and the music choice. Thanks.
It's so interesting how a fleet can go from 300 steam locomotives to none in something like 10 or 20 years.
Development really happens fast.
*Happy Rodney Noise*
6:38 *angry rodney noises*
They *[REDACTED]* wrecked The Central!
Very informative video. At least two were saved. I can't wait for the Niagara video. In my humble opinion, the epitome of steam power.
Pretty amazing video of the New York Central Mohawk locomotives. These are another beautiful locomotives. One of my Aunts has a Lionel New York Central Mohawk locomotive No. 3000.
Cool! I have the same one! Its one of my favorite engines
@@WesternOhioInterurbanHistory thanks. My Aunt also has a Lionel New York Central Commodore Vanderbilt, Reading T1 2100, Western & Atlantic “General” #3, Conrail SD60M, Lionel Lines 2-4-2, Pennsylvania Railroad K4, Reading Iron Heritage 2-8-0, Pennsylvania Railroad 460, and other Lionel models.
We have some Bachman dcc Mohawks at the model railroad club I am a part of. They are such reliable engines and easily our must dependable steamers for train shows able to run longer reliably even longer than some diesels
I've been looking forward to this
LIMA FOREVER
Great video! The Mohawks were definitely some fascinating (and good looking) Steam Engines, lol.
Wooo! Love me some elephant eared Mohawks! Great video as always, your style and pace works so well to get the information across while being clear and concise! Keep up the awesome work!
I’m glad two of them still stand!
Finally, an in-depth video on the famed Mohawks. I have an admiration of the Mohawks, particularly L4b #3135
Does it have something to do with a certain fictional railroad in Colorado?
We’ve been waiting for a second episode of this playlist, really good video :D
*He returns!* Great footage and fantastic music towards the middle.
So glad I got off youtube shorts in order to go watch this
F THE SHORTS
@@OldIronVideo No YT shorts
All my homies hate YT shorts
I’ve always admired the 4-8-2 wheel arrangement.
Great and unique fact I did wonder when steam locomotives were getting played out but I figured somewhere around the 1950’s steam locomotives transitioning to Diesel locomotives and most locomotives run by electric.
Those Mohawk locomotives were one of the strongest steam trains in the US until the diesels took over and nearly every one of these locomotives were scrapped 🚂💥
For mountain types I’m betting
As one who loves the Mohawk 4-8-2s, and owns a rare HO-scale model of an L1, I'm grateful for this video.
Yes, I adore the Mohawks, I saw 2933 in St. Louis in 2018, a real beauty. I especially love the dual-service L-3s and L-4s. 3001 is, in my honest opinion, the luckiest surviving steam locomotive. T&P to the rescue. The only surviving steam locomotive to have pulled the 20th Century Limited.
I saw that one back in April, still a beautiful looking locomotive. Looked recently painted.
This was the first time I've ever looked into the NY Central's Mohawks and I can safely say they're one of my favorite steam locomotives ever along with NY Central's own Niagara's, their streamlined engines, and UP's FEF-3s.
Been patiently waiting for this!
Nice I’ve been waiting for this :D
I'm so happy two New York Central icons have been preserved. 4-8-2s are some of my favorite steam locomotives and the mohawks are no exception
I heard of this type, but never understood as a child what it meant. Thanks again!
I have zero clue how I went from a 60’s-90’s railfan to a 1860’s-1930’s railfan. But I’m obsessing over the beauty of steam these days
New York Central: Road of the Future!
I love the Mohawks. They have very cool designs.
I hope one day, the 3001 or 2933 gets restored to operational condition one day.
The return of the King
There is a Mohawk locomotive too in New York, Chicago and St Louis better known as the nickel plate road
something to note: although the L3 design was successful as dual service, only the L3a ever actually pulled passenger (and freight). L3b and L3c engines were designated as freight only. Source: nycshs
Wow! This is such a good video, although I do the the Trainz stuff in the videos. But anyways, keep up the good work!
I've seen 3001 once. It's sad that she's being kept outside to suffer the blistering heat and frigid cold.
Nice Video
Every time I see this video, I can't help but be reminded of #HistoryInTheDark and his lampooning of Alfred Perlman, especially about the two surviving Mohawks...
Mohawks on the New York Central Railroad were many called their 4-8-2s in both freight and passenger trains throughout the NYC System.
Out of all the 4-8-2's, besides the frisco t-54's, thease are my favorite :)
Does anyone else remember The Mohawk that Wouldn’t Quit?
yes
Me!
Me too.
@@nssteampunk4865 3124 for is kinda odd because the look it has is on none of the nyc mohawks 3124 in trainz has smoke deflectors and a feed water heater
Enjoyed this video as well, no worries about the wait. Glad to see some of the Mohawks survived. As l said in comments section of the previous New York Central Hudson's video, check out the complete reproduction of famous steam locomotives in England ( Doncaster?) With locomotives such as the Tornado rebuilt from scratch.
Yes!
I hope one day One of the mohawks 3001 or 2933 Will operate again in the near future
I like your work, because you provide us with vaulable informations about the forgotten New York Central
Thank you for making good videos like this! Good quality, good footage, and very charming voice^^
Ever since I saw the famed RUclips series the Mohawk that wouldn't quit I fell in love with the New York Central mohawks, at least some 3124's sisters survives
I love this and the engines of Amtrak series! Maybe if I have motivation I might make my own called "Engines of Queensland Rail"
Great video with wonderful history
I would love too see you cover the JNR steam locomotives
Idea for future episode: engines of Amtrak/New York central crossover with the EMD F and E units since both railroads owned those models and even the same individual locomotives.
My grandfather operated Mohawks. TD Atlanta
First, I’m a big fan of your videos! I did just want to provide a correction as 3037 you have pictured has a LIMA builder plate which got me looking, as my great grandfather was working there at the time. L-1d 2585-2684, , L3-b 3035-3049 and lastly L4-b 3100-3149 all were built by Lima. Fun fact, the last L4-b order cost the NYC $182,633 for each locomotive. So can’t give ALCO all the credit. Also worth mentioning the NYC was Lima’s best customer with a total of 872 locomotives delivered. Source: Lima the history by Eric Hirsimaki.
Nice video!
Quite Amazing.
Very informative and some incredible old footage ..thanks for sharing and educating us on this former railroad co.
I'm excited for the Niagara video. This series is so good!
Cool video AmtrakGuy365. My Grandpa as a NTH RailKing L3 Mohawk.
I love the NYC 4-8-2 Mohawks
Me too.
@@nathancorcoran5347 Same here mine is 3001
Nice Amtrakguy365 also Western Maryland 734 was replaced by C&O 1309 however 734 will be restored also is there any that you can do the NYCs Electric locomotives?
As of September 11th, 2023 during the monthly city of Elkhart common council meeting it was revealed that a organization from Fort Wayne Indiana (Possibly the Fort Wayne railroad Historical society who currently operates NKP765) has expressed interest and is very close to acquiring NYC 3001 from the city of Elkhart in order to restore it to possibly operating condition to be used in excursions. One of the challenges though is that some members of the city council are opposed to the idea of 3001 leaving because it is an asset to the city and it is this opposition that has killed off past attempts at restoring it.
I like the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad 734 2-8-0
Ahead of the Niagra video. I've seen photos of Niagaras in operation in the mid 50s heading seasonal passenger trains to Mackinaw City, MI.
It’s ironic that the only surviving versions are Mexican Niagras both in Mexico and one on the New Hope and Ivyland, which is being restored slowly.
Two of the L4b Mohawks, 3144 and 3148 were fitted with Timken roller bearing rods in the 1940's along with other modifications. They proved to be two of the fasted Mohawks on the system. However, with the coming of the Niagara there was no need to modify any others. MTH Premier has accurately modeled both of those engines in O scale.
“If i had a nickel for every time the NYC named one of their most iconic locomotives after a river, I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it’s happened twice.”
Rodney Kantorski would be happy to see this!!
Nice
I was in Elkhart just last week! I love seeing 3001
you should make Engines of NYC for thier electrics too, like the S and P motors they owned, which (correct me if im wrong) were unique to that railroad
great video btw
Damn I bow just realized there is a mohawk at my local train museum
Excellent video! Where did you find the source for the clip at 5:14? I’m building a layout centered around that scene at Hiles Tower in New London, Ohio.
Thanks and keep up the great work!
YES I've been waiting for this
YAY ITS HERE!
Mohawks are spectacular!
You make FANTASTIC videos
I miss engines of Amtrak thank you
love this new series do his again
THIS IS THE ROAD TO THE FUTURE! NEW YORK CENTRAL!
hey jared i have a cool idea !
you should complete engines of new york central part 5!!!
A very reliable mixed-traffic steam engine that redefined New York Central's mainline passenger & freight services in the early 20th century.
The reason why the NYC donated the 2933 to the National Museum of Transport was because some railfans discovered the engine sitting out behind the roundhouse in the early 60s. They wanted to restore the engines and operate it on fantrips. The NYC, whose management hated steam, quickly donated the engine to the museum. John Roberts, who started the museum, only wanted one of every wheel arrangement, they already had a 4-8-2 in Frisco 1522, but since the NYC didn't want the engine restored, they quickly had it moved to the museum.
'...the NYC, whose management hated steam....." one little bit of BS dooms your story to the foamer BS pile
I can't wait for the Niagra video
Haven't seen footage like this. Cool!
I personally would love to see Mohawk 3001 restored and under steam again for excursion service in NYS. Even if it doesn't look the greatest, I hope they are least get it running again. I've been along the Mohawk River before and I think it would be incredible to see one of these things charging down the side of that river.
I think 3001 looks good, though I don’t like the tender design.
Super cool video with lots of history 👍
Hi AmtrakGuy365! I love ur videos!
Oh man I wish you did a video about the NYC A1 Berkshire or NYC K5-b pacific (aka The Mercury)
Ah yes
The Mawk
My favorite 4-8-8-2
Very well done, thank you.
3:37 YOUR A SPECIAL MIXED TRAFFIC ENGINE
Every time I hear that song at the beginning, I want to play Super Mario RPG lol
A lot of people don't know but the st.louis transportation museum has a lot of rare pieces like the Mohawk that you stated but also the other remaining daylight in all black a aero train plus the Y6b I believe could be Y6a I forget. Also Frisco 1522 that use to run back in the day.
The Y is a Y6a
The New York Central rr had the best looking 4-8-2 type locomotives of any railroad in my opinion, specifically the L3 & L4 classes.
Damn, if I restored 3001 with the tender, I will have paint it into the 20th century limited, name it commodore Vanderbilt and renumber it into 5344
Ngl i feel like a Rexall Train history video would be sick to see, its interesting to see such an odd pairing of a railroad and a drug store company with the outcome being a promo teain with a whole tour
6:12 2933 looks almost like a New York central Hudson at this angle
Can’t wait for the legendary Niagaras!!!
Once of my favorite steam locomotives
What is your favorite New York central locomotive.
My favorite NYC steam locomotive would be: New York Central 4-8-2 “Mohawk”.
My favorite NYC diesel locomotive would be: New York Central EMD E9.
My favorite NYC electric locomotive would be: New York Central T-Motor.
