    GODDAMMIT, THIS IS IT!
I played this game when I was a kid, but I could never find out what it was. I remember being so nostalgic for Ghost and Goblins despite never playing it because I remember playing a knight in his boxers fighting in a cementary only to die and be revived by the grim reaper.
Well, this is a most appreciated blast from the past.

I played Maximo for the first time a few months ago... not counting controller passing at a kids' houses. I didn't get very far, but it made me think about how action games can go in infinite directions. I appreciate you covering many unique ones these past few months.

I beat this game at 10 one day, one play through, always taking the heart from the princess’s, 7-8 hours straight without dying once. Just because my cousin and I believed, if you did it without ever dying you would get a secret ending or something cool. One of the most intense pressure settings I can remember, still can’t believe I actually did it so young.

I love this game and its no-frills approach to 3D action platforming from an era when every game in the genre was either a collectathon or a Z-targeting focused fencing sim.

Exactly Maximo stood out in the crowd, where the market was completely saturated with those types of games you just mentioned. Maximo actually made you think and have skill to overcome it’s obstacles and challenges, it stood out amongst the other action adventure games.

I whole heartedly believe that this game is almost single handedly responsible for my love of the Souls games, I played this so much as a kid and then when Demons Souls released I was absolutely hooked because of the challenge
Amazing to see the influence that Ghosts and Goblins has had going forward from its release and it's influence people's taste in games as a whole 😁

I've been thinking the same ever since i first played DS3 back in 2017 i believe. I used to love this game and the sequel when i was a kid and still fire both up every now and then. Pretty sure it doesn't have the fanbase (i.e. demand) needed for remaster let alone remake, but indeed Sony should add it to PS store and/or PS Plus as a classic especially now that they have many other PS2 games on their subscription service.

Ayo great vid about Maximo. Few people talk about it.
Just a tidbit on the special moves that I think you missed. You can rearrange them in the select menu so you can lock the moves you don't want to lose after death, going as far as allowing you to lock the kisses. It pushes strategic thinking forward particularly on novice players, because you might think some skills are more valuable than others until you realize losing your basic attack extensions does more harm than good, but dang some others are just so convenient to have. Otherwise a mid skilled player may want to lock the kisses for the challenge run but be wary of which other combat skills will be in danger.

There was originally supposed to be a third game that wrapped up the story, but unfortunately it was cancelled in development (understandable because the games sold poorly, but still very sad). The developers of the series did do a few videos talking about it, but they didn't get too many views.....
But for what it was, this was such a fun game, Dark Souls can't even compare to Maximo's difficulty, especially the first Maximo. The bosses were epic and I recall spending the entire Christmas break in 2002-2003 just mastering this game before moving onto its sequel. The sequel was even more amazing than the original, the bosses were amazing and had multiple forms in an early PS2 game, it was just so phenomenal and I enjoyed finding all the collectibles in each level.
But back then when I tried talking to my friends about these games, nobody knew anything about them, it's a real shame I wonder why the series didn't do well, probably not good marketing. Did these two games ever get remastered for current consoles? They really should do that to give the game some extra recognition, should've done that when they released the remastered G&G. Thanks for covering this game Aboveup!

    • @inputfunny
      @inputfunny 3 месяца назад

I think the first game sold well enough considering they greenlit the sequel and it has a "Greatest Hits" version, which means it sold more than 400,000 copies. The sequel doesn't have a "Greatest Hits" version, so I assume it sold pretty badly and that's why the 3rd game was cancelled unfortunately.

Hey aboveup I must mention to you if you have not figured out already The only reason why the kisses exist is to give you an extra saved ability slot. You can swap out what abilities that are locked down so you can save them upon death so if you get a kiss you can switch it out for ability that isn't in the metal locked slots. And then upon death you will lose the kiss but remain all of the locked slots you have.

I Absolutely Love *Capcom's Maximo: Ghosts to Glory and Army of Zin* Games SO much from my Childhood Years. Those games meant SO much to me. Those games have the Best English Dub Voice Actors and Actresses, Characters, Stages, Enemies, Stages and the Best Epic Bosses I've ever seen. I also Love, Respect and Appreciate the Capcom Hero and Villain of *Capcom's Maximo: Ghosts to Glory and Army of Zin* games: Maximo and Baron Hawkmoor. The ONLY character I Absolutely Hated, Loathe and Despised in those games is King Achilles himself. He's such a Despicable man! He ONLY cares about Absolute Power and himself. He's a Total Monster! He's Pure Evil, Heartless, Bruteful, Merciless, Malevolent, Malicious, Tyrannical and Dominant ULTIMATE Capcom Villain. That's the reason why I Absolutely Despised King Achilles SO much from *Capcom's Maximo: Ghosts to Glory and Army of Zin* games from my Childhood. I much rather prefer Baron Hawkmoor as THE Best Epic Badass Capcom Villain to Maximo over King Achilles any day of the week.

This game had so much potential to be a great and fairly challenging game. Unfortunately, it is marred by poor technical development/choices. Maximo's movements, like his attack input and cool down times as well as the cumbersome camera control, leaves much to be desired in more extreme situations throughout the game and while the first couple of levels may bring up nostalgic fun time memories, they just don't hold up very well today.
The game partially relies on cheap shot antics to provide difficulties, rather than have clever obstacles. Most rely on bad camera control.
The enemies are far more agile than you are, in terms of attack cool down. You'll also have enemies spawn behind you and damage you, without you even knowing they were there and thanks to the lousy camera control (you actually cannot control the camera while running), it's very frustrating to turn and see where the enemy is standing, because you have to stop and then click on the camera turn button. By the time you do so, the enemy is already about to hurt you. So, you just have to keep moving away until hopefully, you're within safe distance to stop and turn. blah.
Sometimes, some enemies won't charge at you until you actually turn to look at them, which would have been ok if all off camera enemies did the same, but this seems to be randomly programmed.
As far as input issues (on actual console) when you swing your sword twice, you have to wait about 1.5 seconds to be able to move away from incoming attacks, while most sword wielding enemies have 0 down time between attacks. So you have to play to that weakness. Learning to use your shield can help in simpler situations but if you have skeleton warriors surrounding you, good luck. They can hurt you from the sides. lol
The game has excellent graphics and music. Some bits are fun and in fairness some challenges are clever (though platform hopping can be annoying sometimes because of the camera work). The save feature is annoyingly stupid imho. It's not like a pause screen to save and leave for work.
Check points could have also been rectified if it only took a single button press to activate, rather than having to do a sword stomp attack to get it going.
If only the game developers fined tuned these little annoyances, this would have been one of my top favorite games to play. I still own the game in minty shape.
