My favorite story from this series was from the mid 2010s. A few of my students complained that some of the games that existed on the old Nintendo were too basic and easy. So...I told them to beat the first stage of Ghosts 'n Goblins and tell me when they finish. The amount of aggravation and pain...I can remember that so clearly to this day.

That's a nice story. Todays "kids" often underestimate the old and rather simple games. In the most cases Videogames got a lot easier with the time and the graphics got better but as a kid of the 80's I prefer the classics - games like Demon's Crest for example. The 16bit aera was the best and most interesting time, that never happens again. I'm glad that I whitnessed it!

I could not agree more! I feel like it got a lot of recognition until the early 2000s and then it kind of faded from the limelight sadly. It’s been great seeing that it still has a small, but very passionate fan base. Curious to see if Fujiwara ever gets to do a follow up to Resurrection in the future. Thanks so much for watching and glad you enjoyed the video!!

Just finished watching through the rest, and awesome job with this documentary! I had no idea about all these other iterations of the games throughout the year passed the snes aside from Maximo and the psp, so it was really nice seeing how much the series really lived on (or attempted to) throughout the years, and the behind the scenes stuff to compliment it 😄

I gotta say I was a bit surprised on some of the information. I always wondered why there wasn't a N64 game, and I had no idea there were 2 phone games with new characters. I also didn't know Maximo was a spiritual successor to the game.

I was 8 when Super Ghouls N Ghosts came out. I remember that everyone that I knew who had a SNES also had a copy of it. Literally everyone had it. I always played it at my cousins house and friends houses thinking it was impossible to beat. But, I just kept on and on and on and fell more and more in love with the series. Now I am almost 40 and it has become one of my all time favorite game franchises along with Castlevania and Final Fantasy and I can finally beat it! I love Super Ghouls N Ghosts so much that I even got a complete in box copy for the Super Famicom based solely on the wonderful cover artwork and the instruction manual being filled with beautiful illustrations. You are so very correct in saying how important the series is as a whole to the world of gaming. This video was extremely well done! It was wonderful sir. Fun fact...the UK version of ghosts and goblins first end shows a picture of the weapon to find, a cross. The problem is that the cross wasn't in the game, it was the shield. Back in the day, I literally spent all day throwing in credits to get the cross, unaware that the shield I kept finding was the weapon I needed. Had to give up when the arcade closed.
Decades later, I learned the truth and finally finished it on my pandoras box.
Always have fond memories of that frustrating day.
Fun fact 2. Sony were cheapskates.
I used to work at GAME and as part of the job, Nintendo would do competitions for stores. The ten stores that got the most preorders on certain new releases, won a copy of the retail game for each member of the staff. I got a few games like Mario sunshine and eternal darkness that way. Sony got in on the act and offered the same with Maximo. I worked my butt off to get that preorder win. We did win. The games arrived and it was a promo version, the same as the multiple samples that used to get sent to the stores anyway.
I never bothered pushing the sony preorders as much. Ninteno did what Sony wouldn't.
    Fun days.
    I still have it!
WELL DONE ON AN EXCELLENT VIDEO!

    • @RewindArcade
      @RewindArcade  2 года назад +1

Thanks, really happy you enjoyed the video!! I had no idea about the cross/shield issue in the UK version, that's really crazy. I wish I had included it in the video! Glad you finally saw it through to the end though, haha.
While that really sucks about what happened with Sony and GAME, it's pretty awesome that you ended up with a promo version that is probably way rarer and worth a lot more these days. Sony was certainly a much different company back then. I worked for PlayStation for a little under a decade (under the U.S. branch) during the PS3 and PS4 eras and was told that they became very different after the PS3's launch. Probably after getting their clock cleaned by the Wii and 360, haha.

Ditto and my favorite of the 3 spinoff games. Always wondered why there wasn't a sequel which would've been so easy to do since Phalanx sealed himself in the crest of heaven or, if you will, time because of it being of Japanese origin "heaven" could translate to time.
Say a successor to Firebrand or humans had found the crest and unknowingly started something with Phalanx on the future, treacherous demon he was from the beginning he could prey upon them for help in being released. It could've went from there.....I'm only 2/3 of the way through the video at this point where Maximo was axed sadly and since DC I lost interest really.

Again, you're giving one of my absolute favorite series the Royal Treatment. Congratulations for the amazing piece of work. It really made my day :) I still have to give the Gargoyles spinoff its deserved time and someday I will.
I first saw the Ghosts'n Goblins arcade during a weekend schooltrip to the snow, the bar in the little place we were staying in had it, and I immediately loved its theme and graphics, so a couple of years later, as I got my NES, one of the first games I got was the port of the first game... and I told you before while you were completing it a few months ago... nightmare, addicting nightmare though :)
Ghouls'n Ghosts arcade machine also came into my life placing itself in a bar next to my school, and we'd spend hours watching people play it on Friday afternoons :) When we got the Megadrive port, I got to play it and it totally felt like the arcade... until you started a discussion with your gamer friends on how the backgrounds in the arcade were more rich and that faraway tree moves in the arcade but doesn't in the Megadrive version... we were like that, so when I saw the PCEngine port in magazines I almost ate the pages in wanting that port lol
I got Super Ghouls'n Ghosts for the SNES on Xmas 92 and I absolutely loved it to bits, and it was the first time I completed a GG game legit :)
Don't want to make it too long, sorry, but it's such an iconic series, I was ecstatic to read that, a few months after I was wishing for a new entry in the series, since it had been too long since the PSP GG, GG Resurrection was announced. I love this last entry, still on it :)

Great video. Thank you. I've loved this series since its inception. I was 10 yrs old when Ghosts n' Goblins was first released and I got the true ending within a year. I preferred it to something like Super Mario Bros. It just had more of an edge than other platformers of the time. Back then games would be in shopping malls, so I'd go on a Saturday and wind up with a fairly sizeable crowd surrounding me and the cabinet which tbh felt kind of weird.
It has many secrets and a secret route to its completion, and as long as you remain on its schedule, it makes it much easier to play. The new one gets a hard time - for some of the most ridiculous and irrational reasons, but I think it's a marvel (and from your video I can see that some of Fujiwara's discarded ideas made it to Resurrection) and I like to think that Elden Ring and Demon's/Dark Souls are a modern 3D iteration. Much in the same way Gears is Contra in 3D.
It would be a dream for Fujiwara to partner with From for a 3D G'nG game for Capcom.
edit: just at the end of your video - the magicians in chests are an evolution of something from the first game. If you repeatedly hit the grave stones you get an owl who turns you into a frog. You can avoid the spell and kill the owl for 2000pts. You can grind these for score if you know where a new timer starts.

    • @RewindArcade
      @RewindArcade  2 года назад +2

Thanks, really happy you enjoyed the video!! It's awesome that you were really big into the game during its arcade inception and even had crowds around you when you played it. I really miss the whole arcade atmosphere when people would crowd around someone when they were on a great run of a difficult game. It's something that's sadly lost to time these days, but always great memories.
The "die and repeat" mentality is definitely very prominent in the Souls games for sure, something which GnG definitely built the foundation for over the years. I think the Maximo games were a great translation of the series to 3D, but I agree that it would be cool to see another more modern attempt be made.
Also, tanks for the spell and score grinding detail. One thing I definitely wish I had talked about more was the scoring aspect of the games cause I think that was a pretty big part of it back in the day, but I was trying to keep it to around an hour so some things sadly got cut.
Thanks so much for sharing your experiences with the game, I love hearing about this stuff from other people!

I had no idea how popular the C64 version of the game was until getting so many comments about it. It seems like nearly as many people grew up with that port as the NES version which is really interesting.

@@RewindArcade I think it's because 1: the c64 was extremely popular and 2: it was a genuinely well crafted platform game. It became iconic.

Yeah, that certainly makes a lot of sense! Seems like the C64 version was very well made and received.

Cracking retrospective look at the history of the GnG series, thoroughly enjoyed every minute, I grew up with these games and have tried to collect and play them all but you’ve highlighted a couple that I missed along the way. Thanks for taking the time and effort to produce such great content.

Thanks John, really appreciate the kind words! I learned a lot myself about some of the more niche spin-off titles while researching for this. It was a fun one to put together. Thanks for watching!

I loved this game!! Super Ghouls and Ghosts really stuck with me. The music and tone made for such an immersive experience.

Agreed, the soundtrack and environmental tone were both so amazing in Super GnG! The third stage, Vermilion Horror, particularly stood out to me.

Thank You for making this. I love the old games in this series. Retrogamer magazine had the opportunity to do justice to this series in their special feature but made a total mess of it. The writer wasn't even a proper fan of the games. This is more like it!

Thanks so much for watching and for the kind words! This was definitely a passion project and a lot of work, but I wanted to make sure I covered it right. I’m glad a fellow fan like yourself enjoyed it!

Thanks a lot dude!! Yeah it was a pretty big undertaking, but also a lot of fun to put together. I recently went through the Genesis GnG for the first time a few months ago and outside of the weird hit boxes, it's a really great port and super fun!
