Cervical Dilation - up close!!

In order to birth your baby your cervix has to dilate (open) and thin (efface) and the baby has to come down into the pelvis! It starts closed and opens cm by cm until eventually you reach 10 cm meaning there’s no cervix left keeping the baby inside!
Have you been told you’re “only” 1 cm or even closed?! NO FEAR!! Your cervix can start changing at any moment (hopefully after 37 weeks) - ANY dilation prior to labor is extra credit!

Add this to the millions of reasons why men should def respect women more and stop with the nonsense "damsel in distress" stereotypes. Also I just can't believe some men rly put women through THIS and then cheat...yeah no

READ the comment, I'm saying that it's crazy how men will know what pain women went through in giving them a child (smth the father is *in part* responsible for) and still cheat on her. As weird as it sounds, cervical dilation isn't always painful. I didn't need to begin breathing my way through it before 7 cm, and could still walk at 8. My sister began feeling pain from 8. Birth is definitely a weird thing and many women can have a bunch of complications from it that most young people have never even heard of, but sometimes things can go really well too.
Me too. I was still walking the halls at 8cm, but I was wearing myself out and the nurse talked me into resting for a while. It didn't really hurt any worse than moderate menstrual cramps until I got back into bed.
@@breathlesshaste Same here. Birth wasn't that much worse than my worst period cramps. After, I felt it was totally justified that I always stayed at home the first day of my period during high school....

Hi, my name is Tanna. And I think girls and women should be taught more about this. Because I was ALREADY PREGNANT when I found out that it's only the cervix that gets bigger to let baby out. Not your vaginal opening. 😬
This is what I was taught when I took Child Development but it should be taught in just health in general. This shit was birth control for me. That and the fact that you can rip
You can rip?
Yeah, usually doctor scissor down there a bit to make way for baby to come out. My friend say she feel when the doctor cut her🥴
woman up and handle it, children are the best joy in anyone’s life, people have been giving birth since the beginning of time, without the medicine and technology we have today. Sure it’ll be really painful, but deciding to not have children because of the pain? Now that’s ridiculous, just shows how much you love your life so much that you would turn down the greatest joy of life for a little pain that doesn’t even last a few weeks. But if you don’t want to have children for other reasons, that’s understandable, I’m just saying if you want to, but are scared of the pain..
@@nadana6418 "greatest joy of life" bruh my greatest joy would be when I get to travel the world. Also do you know what happened before modern medicine? Millions of women died in childbirth. When this starts to happen, you can't feel it. Not alot of nerves there.. You'll either be in labor, or soon be in labor and having contractions. And if you get an epidural you won't feel any pain other than the epidural itself.
Exactly, there’s a reason we don’t have many nerves in even the vagina itself, except the actual entrance and where the clitoris extends inwards in the body.
I feel like that’s gotta hurt. An IUD caused me extreme cramping, and an IUD is telescopic compared to a baby
The epidural is one of the scariest things to me. A giant needle, which I already hate, going into my spine?? NOOOOO thank you very much
The cramps from labor are what’s helping the cervix to dilate... mine were very intense and close together out of nowhere. She was ready to come out and it wasn’t time to push.

A reminder, fear itself does make childbirth more painful. I see people being terrified in the comments. Information is supposed to make for less fear. It's important to know that you're in control of your childbirth occasion, so be informed, be relaxed, be a bossy lady if necessary.
You can't control how things turn out. My baby went into distress. I wasn't about to demand my own way.

Agreed. Add it to the massively long list for why being a woman is such a shitty gig. I wish I could've been born a man. Not because of gender identity but because I'm sick of having to deal with all the issues that come along with having a uterus. It just sucks. I love kids and I want them but this shit is terrifying. Also, my moms stomach looks terrible from having me and my brother and im just not ready for all that sag and shit.

I’ve had two kids and after the first one within four years I was in the best shape of my life with an 8 pack stomach. The second one I was lazy and got fat and am now spending the next two years working out to be back in the best shape of my life again.
Pregnancy wrecks your body if you allow it to.
Lotion your belly, take lots of walks and don’t eat Taco Bell and ice cream everyday and you will bounce back from pregnancy no problem.
I know this is tmi but with my first I had a natural birth and my down there was very much intact and tight afterwards. My second was c section so no down there problems.😂
Again, pregnancy wrecks you if you allow it so if you do end up having a kid just make sure to work out your body and pelvic floor and take care of yourself and no one will even notice you’ve been pregnant. :)

In order to adopt a child, they have to have been born to a woman who went through that same process (or through a ceasarian section) first.
My cervix screams "c section"
It's short and a baby would destroy me down there.
Best get the epi-no or that ball thing that helps stretch you
Csections have increased risks and are more dangerous than a vaginal birth. They should only be an option as a last resort.
C-sections can actually be worse they are still painful and for many it takes longer to recover from a c-section than a natural birth
@@jesss4174 I’ve had 2 natural births and 2 csections, I actually have to have a 3rd csection here in a few months and I’m dreading it 😫 it is the worst pain and recovery. I wish I could have this last baby naturally.
I actually had a folley balloon to stretch me and help dilate me with my 3rd daughter and it got me to 4 cm but I still ended up with a csection (my first ever) worst birth experience by far.
My doctors actually told me my pelvis was too small to deliver babies naturally without causing so much damage. I had over 100 stitches with my first born, and all my babies were preterm and small.

As soon as I saw my son after giving birth, I had an endorphin rush so strong, I thought I was high. I immediately fell in love with him and forgot a doctor and nurse were stitching my body back together. Was the best moment of my life hands down. That was my experience
@@simpleton2090 Same here. They kept telling me about that feeling when you see your baby after birth but I didn’t understand it till I saw her. I didn’t see anything or anyone else. I was just falling in love at first sight with her.
birth is the best day. Coming into your full power while you watch your body transform and bring life is the best day. The very best.
I agree, the day I gave birth was absolutely NOT the best day of my life. Not everyone has that magical, falling in love, butterflies and rainbows moment when they give birth. For some of us it just doesn’t happen in an instant. Nobody every talks about it so when I gave birth I wasn’t prepared to not have that experience. But I didn’t.
@@simpleton2090 i heard that its the hormone afterbirth
And we’re not allowed to be a little cranky and uncomfortable during pregnancy. My uncle said “we’ll, you decided to have a baby” doesn’t hurt any less though. 😂😂😂😂
I hate when people say shit like that. Your feeling and pain is still valid ffs regardless of whether it’s your decision or not 😒
That reminded me of this one time, I forget most of the story cause it’s been a while but my dad pissed my mom off when she was having one of her kids. I forgot what he said, I think it was something along the lines of like calm down or something and she just glared at him. I’ll ask my mom later what happened and update the comment but yea it was a funny story.

You’re allowed, tell them to have the baby if they wanna run their mouth. Seriously I’d have them leave the room. I’m not going through intense pain and listening to some annoying ass in law.
Just imagine squeezing a medium grapefruit out of a nostril. That's the appropriate dimensions
Except your nostrils aren’t capable of expanding though hahaha
@@MarinaMeoli They are if you pull a grapefruit through them 😖
@@dshe8637 hahahah I understand what you mean! I just don’t think these analogies are very helpful to women, because your cervix expanding so that the baby can pass is a natural process that your body was built to do. Of course that doesn’t make it painless or easy, but unlike a big piece of fruit going through an orifice it’s not supposed to, birthing a baby is something your body is naturally able to perform (barring some medical issues etc)
@@MarinaMeoli it was just something that occurred to me while in labour many years ago. The medical staff present seemed to think that it was normal to get a baby out of such an aperture, but in the heat of the moment it suddenly seemed impossibly surreal to me.
@@MarinaMeoli It did turn out to be possible, though :-D
And if there are any ladies reading this in a state of pregnancy, they might like to know that went through it all again a couple more times.
In fact two of those who made it out, have gone on to repeat the performance for themselves some decades later.

Oh my goodness, congratulations and good luck on your delivery, I hope your baby is beautiful ❤
Just remember to get that epidural. That shit numbs you up so good, I slept from 5 CM to 10CM on it. It literally feels like your lower body just falls asleep and it gives you plenty of time to rest before the pushing. It also helps with the Delivery pain and all you feel is pressure. Like a really big fart or poop is all.
Good luck, and you can do it momma! Also sleep now. You’re going to need it.

Ah yet so many mothers say it is. I guess they just block out that whole agonizing pain memory. When I was like 6 I remember hoping that by the time i was 30 technology would have synthetic wombs but alas, they dont even have decent or reliable pain relief for women in labor so were probably at least 100 yrs from some sort of external womb. Glad I'm not the only one feeling fear after watching this video. This was horrifying.
I was even more horrified by the length of her nails… 👀
I have 3 children and had never seen this type of thing before! My last one I was 4cm already when I went in to get induced, that size blows my mind that I was walking around like that! Honestly, birth was much better than these sizes make it seem though 😅 I don’t want any more children and my body does not do pregnancy well but I’d give birth again in a heartbeat 🙌🏻 I loved it
How is it horrifying? I don't get it, just seems expected to me.
@@Khayran Kind of body horror. It's upsetting to some people to think about the body being deformed from its usual state, even if it's natural like cervix dilation. Plenty of women have a fear of pregnancy and what happens to the body, myself included. Personally, I was disgusted when I saw a video of a baby kicking in the womb, and the stomach was stretching and moving from it. Some people find it a beautiful miracle of life, but for myself and others, it's more horrifying to think about having another living thing inside of you.
@@joosoo exactly, idk if this is some sort of body dismorphia or what but everything a human body does when you read think about it is impressive but horrifying and gross.
Just to clarify, dilation is not painful, dilation itself doesn’t hurt. It’s the contractions that cause your cervix to dilate and they are what hurts.
That's not true, it's the opposite. Contractions don't hurt, the belly area doesn't hurt, what hurts its the opening of the cervix which feels like a stabbing with an ice pick or knife.
@@solangelalebron1348 that’s also wrong. 😂 Contractions hurt. It’s your uterus tightening up. When having a contraction, most of the pain is centered above the bellybutton. Not your cervix.
@@solangelalebron1348 usually the crotch pain comes when the baby is coming out, and only lasts for the duration that the baby is coming out, unless you’ve got lightening crotch during your pregnancy. They call it the ring of fire, because it burns so bad so women physically can’t force themselves to push.
@@parkerknight8738 I wouldn't have been able to push. My spirit wouldn't have had the strength. But there was another issue wrong with me. I thought natural labor would fix it, and it won't completely. I didn't know what I know now, then.
@@solangelalebron1348 natural labor is a bitch, but the epidural needle is scary 😂
I’m pregnant and not gonna lie, this scared the crap out of me
It’s gonna be ok. I just had my first 4 months ago & childbirth was my biggest fear. It wasn’t easy but the incredible high once you give birth & first hold your sweet baby in your arms you forget all about the pain of labor. You got this mama, you are so much stronger than you may know!
Remember for all the horror stories people tell you, those are actually the minority.
I had an awesome birth.
I’m always hesitant to share it because the last thing I want is to come across as if I’m bragging about it or invalidating women’s experiences that weren’t great. But good birth experiences are not as rare as they seem - most women who have them just don’t share them enough. And I feel like if we were more open about it, less women would be afraid of birth. Which is HUGE, because fear itself is a huge driver in how much pain you’ll feel.
@@MarinaMeoli unfortunately the act of giving birth is a taboo and not a lot of people talk about their experiences, good or bad...
I've been trying to normalize talking about it now, and I'm 20yo! my mom thinks it's crazy and that we do talk about it but I didn't know about it until I was old enough to take the interest to learn about it
tv shows and movies portray birth as if it's the worst pain in the whole world, doctors who will profit off of our fears say that natural birth is scary and shit can go bad so they don't have to wait for the baby to be born. the society also profit off of us not having our babies without medical interventions, scaring and making women submissive after all the trauma they been through
it's insane what you learn when you look for information about pregnancy and the birthing process
Same here!!
Don’t be afraid. I know it’s hard not to be since we’ve been programmed to think like that with all the movies and shows showing women looking like they’re near death smh it doesn’t have to be like that if you don’t want it to be. I was scared before I had my first child but I knew I didn’t want to be afraid. So I overcame my fear by doing research and I learned it’s really mind over matter (in most cases). The more the mind and body are in sync the better. It’s all about being in tune with your body and letting it do what it already knows how to do. Other than trying to relax (as much as possible of course), breathe and not tense up you don’t have to do anything your body just goes. What makes many births difficult is when we work against our bodies and tense up. That makes it more painful because the body is fighting against the fear we hold on to in our minds. The mind and body should be in harmony. Believe you can, breathe, relax and let go. It does take a practice to know how to relax your body and it’s different for each person but it’s nothing to fear😊
*me watching this while having the worst menstrual cramp i've experienced:* no thanks, i don't wanna bear a child ever. i am good with raising and taking care of rescue cats and dogs 😅
edit: just to add, the menstrual pain isn't the only reason why i refuse to bear a child. there are plenty of reasons behind it, but let me tell you one thing: you don't decide for other people what is and what is not they'd consider as a family. there is a lot more behind being a human parent, and it's a sh*t ton of responsibility. most people are already fucked up and most of it stems down to bad parenting. don't bear a child just because you want someone to take care of you for when you are old. don't bear a child just because you want them to pursue the things you failed to do. they're not an investment.
also, you don't tell other people that you're a good parent. it will show based on how your child turned out as a person.
Imagine thinking your cats can replace family
@@LD-rs1oj imagine thinking they can’t? Animals are amazing and also much harder to mentally scar. Even if birth wasn’t scary enough the responsibility to not fuck up your kids is even more scary. It’s shockingly easy to give your kids life long trauma
