    Will there be residual quatz on the brush that can transfer to the scalp/hair despite the brush being dry? Thus, Do you have to rinse the quatz off before you dry it? Or does it not matter

    • @mishawnaromerohairstylist
      @mishawnaromerohairstylist  3 года назад

      Hi Christine! This is a great question, and one I get asked often. No, there is no residual quats left that can transfer to the scalp hair, brush etc. Think of it as the same as when you clean your counter top with bleach. You spray the bleach on, wipe with a clean cloth, then it dries and it is safe to use, because it has dried completely and has been disinfected. Additionally these are the same steps, that I was taught to get my Cosmetology license. Quats is used in all of my trainings ,and when used properly, it is a safe disinfecting agent. If you feel more comfortable, you may use bleach instead. I personally don't care for the smell of bleach, and I find quats smell way more gentle of a scent. You can buy a small bottle of quats at Sally Beauty to try it and see if you like it. I do not rinse my quats solution off, but you could. I sometimes do this from time to time. What I do, is allow the cleaned (Just got out of the quats) tub to drain at an angle so all the liquid goes to the bottom, then I come back dump it out and let the brushes dry on a towel. Thanks for asking a great question & for watching my brushes video!

    • @mishawnaromerohairstylist
      @mishawnaromerohairstylist  4 года назад +23

      What a great question Alison! Of course you can use vinegar & baking soda instead of quats. That's a great suggestion for home use. The baking soda may leave some reside on your brushes which could be transferred to your hair when the brushes dry. But that's no big deal, as baking soda is safe for humans. Keep in mind vinegar/baking soda will mostly level 1 clean & deodorize your brushes. To have your brushes be considered "disinfected & sanitized as per California State Board Cosmetology procedures", they would need to be cleaned with quats to be 100% sure all viruses & bacteria would be killed. But that's totally not necessary in your case, because you are using your brushes for home use, and you are not working as a hairstylist. I myself MUST clean with quats because I am in a commercial setting with many customers. These are the procedures I use to keep my clients safe. Thank you for watching my video & for your intelligent question. Have a nice day!

You can use this brush cleaning tool: amzn.to/2x0Gs9m to clean shed hair in the bristles & it does it quickly! It's an amazing tool. Use scissors to cut away the hair if it is too thick. Hi Queen of the North! Great questions. You will be fine washing your wooden brushes + boar bristle brushes the same way I do in my video. I have 4 wooden + boar bristle brushes I fully submerge in water for disinfecting. With these type brushes I strictly adhere to the ten minute timings though. Whereas, with plastic I forget and sometimes they soak for a few hours before I go on to the next step. When I'm done with the Quats ten mintues - I take them outside & shake as much water out as possible, then put on a clean towel to dry completely overnight. I have never had a problem with mildew on wooden, padded or boar brushes using my method. I have been cleaning them for 15 years this way. You might just try one with my method see how it goes and do others as needed. To answer your first question, if it was me, I'd use a bleach water solution with 1 Quart to 2 tablespoons of water. ...Maybe not the vinegars, I'm not sure if the scent of vinegar will linger, as I have no experience cleaning brushes with vinegars. But you could defo try it because vinegars, are fine for personal use as a disinfectant. Good luck! Let me know how it goes. Thank you for watching my video!

    • @mishawnaromerohairstylist
      @mishawnaromerohairstylist  3 года назад +3

      What a great question Paulina! I wash brushes at the end of every work day. For example, If I see 2 extension clients in one day, each client gets a new set of implements at the start of each visit. No comb or brush that has been previously used, ever touches another client. As I'm working if I need a different comb, I pull one out from my "clean' bin & use it. Once I am done with an appointment, all brushes, clips, combs etc. go into a bin marked: "dirty". Then at the end of my work day, I take the "dirty' bin, and put all the implements thru the two step disinfecting process that you see here in my video. I take extreme pride in providing a clean station & salon for my clients to come get their hair done. A most excellent question & I'm happy to answer it at length! What do you do for wooden handle brushes or a very expensive Mason Pearson brush. I’d never leave that soak.

    • @mishawnaromerohairstylist
      @mishawnaromerohairstylist  2 года назад

      Hello Jeannie! You can use my method on all brushes. Mason Pearson brushes are British, 130 years of craftsmanship, and the best in a luxury brush. They are made with: Boar bristles, some light wood, and plastic. They have a unique orange pad rubber base.
      Because they are a high end brush, you would just strictly adhere to the 10 minute soak pre-wash. And 10 min Quats timing. Often times if my brushes are all plastic and mid priced, I may leave them longer like an hour or so, just because I'm busy doing other things - and a longer soak will not damage certain plastics.
      However, my wooden boar bristles brushes I only do the 10 and 10 min Quats, take them out, shake them off and leave them on a clean towel to air dry. You may want to take a towel and squeeze the flexy bristle base and get out all the water - then air dry.
      A point to consider, you may drop the timing down to 5-7 minutes on the pre-wash and Quats soak. Observe, see how your M. Pearson brush does, use it for a awhile, and if all goes well, you'll know that timing works to disinfect.
      I have cleaned all of my brushes this way for 15 years, and have never had a problem with molding. Boar bristle, and wooden brushes no problem! Additionally if you are nervous about water staying in, you may use a hair dryer to dry left over water in your brush, after they have been air dried for an hour or so. Medium heat, high speed.
      Have a great weekend. Thank you for watching my video!

    • @mishawnaromerohairstylist
      @mishawnaromerohairstylist  2 года назад

      Hello Grace!
      Yes, that stuff is pesky to remove. It's best to take off all the lint and fuzz before you begin the prewash step. That way your brushes come out squeaky clean. An old toothbrush works, a pedicure brush or there are a variety of brush cleaner tools available : amzn.to/3ze136a Additionally, if the fuzz just won't come out, time to throw away your brush & get a new one. Brushes are typically $10 - $50 range for a decent round brush or vent brush at Sally Beaty. Thank you for watching my video Have a great week!

      @mishawnaromerohairstylist  2 года назад +2

      Great question Ditto! Of course you can use vinegar instead of quats. That's a great suggestion for home use. Keep in mind vinegar will (level 1) clean your brushes. To have your brushes be considered "disinfected & sanitized as per California State Board Cosmetology procedures", they would need to be cleaned with quats to be 100% sure all viruses & bacteria would be killed. But that's totally not necessary in your case, because you are probably using your brushes for home use. The vinegar will be fine in your case. I have not used vinegar before, there may be a scent of it on your brushes - but no matter, it will dissipate in a few days I'm sure. Thank you for watching my brushes video. Have a nice day!

    I just got a Mason Pearson brush and I would be so scared to do this process with it! Do you think it would be okay? I would be so scared that the quats liquid would get stuck inside (since there is a small hole in the brush that lets the air out of the padding.) Or it un- gluing the padding or destroying the natural rubber.

    • @mishawnaromerohairstylist
      @mishawnaromerohairstylist  2 года назад +1

      Hi Elo! Great question. You will be fine washing your brushes the same way I do in my video. I have 4 padded brushes I fully submerge in water for disinfecting. When I'm done I take them outside & shake as much water out as possible, then put on a clean towel to dry completely overnight. I have never had a problem with mildew on padded brushes. And I have been doing wooden & padded brushes this way for 16 years with no issues. I do not have a Mason Pearson brush, however of I did, I would feel 100% confident in submerging them in water & cleaning them the way I do in my video. Two additional points to consider: 1/ You may want to use a blower to wick away more water before you set them to air dry. 2/ I love calling companies to ask questions about their products, I'm sure MP could also give you tips on proper care of your MP brush. Here is their number from their website: +44 (0) 20 7491 2613 . They are in London. I'd be curious to know what they say. Good luck! Let me know and thanks for watching my video ;-)

    Can I use your method on wooden natural bristle Fine brushes like KENT? or wooden brushes that have a cushion where the bristles come out?

    • @mishawnaromerohairstylist
      @mishawnaromerohairstylist  2 года назад

      Hello Roger, Yes! Absolutely you can use my method on all brushes, KENT brushes (I looked them up) because they are wood, you would just strictly adhere to the 10 minute soak pre-wash. And 10 min Quats timing. Often times if my brushes are all plastic, I may leave them longer like an hour or so, just because I'm busy doing other things - and a longer soak will not damage plastic. However, my wooden boar bristles brushes I only do the 10 and 10 minutes, take them out, shake them off and leave them on a clean towel to air dry. You may want to take a towel and squeeze the bristle base (if it's flexy rubber) and get out all the water - then air dry. I have cleaned all of my brushes this way for 15 years, and have never had a problem with molding. Additionaly if you are nervous about water staying in, you may use a hair dryer to dry left over water in the woodewn brushes, after they have been air dried for a few hours. Medium heat, high speed. Have a great weekend. And thank you for watching my video! :-)

    • @mishawnaromerohairstylist
      @mishawnaromerohairstylist  3 года назад

      Hi Finelinehaven! Great question. Yes wood should not be soaked, however, I do disinfect my wooden brushes with these same steps. The only difference, is that I pay real close attention to just having them in the water for the allotted 10 minutes for prewash, and 10 mins for Quats, then right out to dry. With other brushes made out of metal or hard plastic, I may leave them longer than the 10 minutes, as I'm doing stuff around the salon. I come back to them after a few hours and finish cleaning them. But with my wooden & boar bristles, I watch the timing for 10 minutes prewash, 10 minutes quats, no more than that, then dry. So far 15 years doing it this way I've have no issues with them wearing down, splitting or rotting. Hope that helps. Thanks so much for watching my brushes video😃

Per my licensing exam and, how I was taught, all brushes, once they are fully sanitized, must be kept in a clean tub with a cover on it to prevent any germs or dirt from getting in. The only thing I'd make sure to take them out of the prewash at 10minutes, and Quats at 10 minutes. Don't let them soak too long...the wood could get soggy. For example, if you forgot and left them for 4 hours. Nothing would happen to the brush, but over time the wood could break down quicker & the brush may not last as long. Great question! Hello Pradeep! The solution is use is: Quaternary Ammonium Compounds, otherwise known as Barbacide in salon lingo. If you're a chemistry geek like me here's more info:
      Quaternary ammonium cations, also known as quats, are positively charged polyatomic ions of the structure NR+
      4, R being an alkyl group or an aryl group.[1] Unlike the ammonium ion (NH+
      4) and the primary, secondary, or tertiary ammonium cations, the quaternary ammonium cations are permanently charged, independent of the pH of their solution. Quaternary ammonium salts or quaternary ammonium compounds (called quaternary amines in oilfield parlance) are salts of quaternary ammonium cations. Polyquats are a variety of engineered polymer forms which provide multiple quat molecules within a larger molecule...

      Yes!! Wet Brushes are totally safe to submerge, as long as you follow the timing on the video. 10 minutes pre-wash, 10 minutes in quats, then air dry. No mold will grow. I lived in Puerto Rico for four years in the past, and it's a pretty wet climate during the rainy season, I cleaned my Wet Brushes this way the entire time with no issues. Great question Faith! Thank you for watching my brushes video! :-)

    Can I use rubbing alcohol instead of quatz

    • @mishawnaromerohairstylist
      @mishawnaromerohairstylist  3 года назад

      Great question GH Entertainment! Yes, you can use alcohol to disinfect. I would mix 2 parts rubbing alcohol to 1 part water in a spray bottle, and use it to disinfect brushes & combs. If you are using it instead of quats in the second step, yes, that will work as well. Thank you for watching my video. Stay safe!

    Quays are in the wipes we use
    For disinfectant. I must admit I didn’t wash my hands after using for many years but didn’t have them all the time. It’s so dangerous that an expert said that’s likely will become banned in future due to hazards, cancerous. That it’s not right no have it being used in such a high volume on every surface. It’s bad.

      Hi Erica, that's a great question. Try a different brush, one with more "scratchy bristles" Try these medium brush cleaners for pipettes: amzn.to/2ySy4JC or this smaller set amzn.to/2XrqMXq . I find the scratchier stiff bristles remove the dust bunnies very nicely. Thank you for watching my video!

    Question. If Quats (*spelling) is a poison, why wouldn't you rinse it? If you're brushing someone's hair that's wet, won't it be absorbed?

    • @mishawnaromerohairstylist
      @mishawnaromerohairstylist  3 года назад +1

      Hi Heather, great questions. Yes, you could definately rinse your combs one final time before they dry to be on the safe side. I indeed do that as well. You can also be assured when the quats dries, it is safe to use with a wet haired person. Think of it like when you use a bleach & water solution to clean a kitchen table, once it dries, it's "poison qualities" have gone away. If you wet it again, it's safe and will not cause injury. Hope that answers your questions. Thank you for watching my video!

    How do you remove dust from brushes?

    • @mishawnaromerohairstylist
      @mishawnaromerohairstylist  Год назад

      Hello DebbieHennessy8144! Yes, that stuff is pesky to remove. It's best to take off all the lint and fuzz before you begin the prewash step. That way your brushes come out squeaky clean. An old toothbrush works, a pedicure brush or there are a variety of brush cleaner tools available : amzn.to/3AHEbNS . You can also cut the stray hair or fuzz out if its really bad. Additionally, if the fuzz just won't come out, time to throw away your brush & get a new one. Brushes are typically $10 - $50 range for a decent round brush or vent brush at Sally Beaty. Thank you for watching my video Have a great week!

    How do you get the lint out a denman D80L?

    • @mishawnaromerohairstylist
      @mishawnaromerohairstylist  3 года назад

      That's a great question Janine! If it was me, I'd: 1/ Remove all hair with a hair puller tool such as: amzn.to/3iRrOnt 2/Scrub off any accumulated lint, with a pedicure brush such as: amzn.to/35UlFDo 3/ Finally spray the Denman with a mixture of quats & water in a 1: 2 ratio, in a spray bottle. 4/ Let dry for an hour and now they are ready to be used! (Quats is the cleaning solution in my video. There is a link in the video for you to see the exact product I use). Thank you for watching my video! Stay safe :-)

    So you don't rinse your Quatz solution off your brushes and Combs? I thought you said the Quatz was poison, seems like you would want to rinse some of the poison off the brushes and Combs so it won't get on your scalp and hair.

    • @mishawnaromerohairstylist

      Hello Margaret! Great question. And I do sometimes rinse off the Quats with water, after I'm final wash step #2. I do know that during our licensing exam, and training, I was taught that the Quats, becomes not harmful and there is only trace amounts (that won't hurt you), after the brushes are completely dry. I don't think the correct word is denatured - but something along those lines. The active poison goes away when completely dry. Thank you for watching my video, and thanks for the insightful question!

      Hi Emka! To remove lint, make sure brush is completely DRY, and free of hair, I like to use Olivia Garden brush cleaner to remove all hair: amzn.to/3iqHqO0. Then use a pedicure brush: amzn.to/2DGTWdG to lightly brush away the lint. Sometimes if a brush is very old, and it hasn't been cleaned for awhile the lint may not come off. Then it's time to trash it and treat yourself to a new brush. Thanks for watching my video!

      You know KB, I never thought of that...I think it would be just fine for combs and items without a padded surface. Padded surfaces may get heated too high in the dishwasher, and damage them over time. After the dishwasher, I'd defo leave them on a clean towel to dry completely overnight. After that you're all good. Thanks for watching my video! Stay safe :-)
