    I love my little velvet. My partner hasn't given me the green light on Ts yet, but I got him to agree to velvet spiders. The females get a little larger than he realized, but I think he's gotten over the shock. 😉

    Two of my girls will often come out of hiding and watch my movements when I'm walking around in my room! Sometimes as if they're trying to latch onto me from afar at times, like from Arachnophobia or something! In all my experience of keeping true spiders and tarantulas I've never seen a spider do that before. These spiders are smarter than you think!

    They are native here in Greece and I have caught small ones in the past to keep. I kept them in large jars with holes opened on the lid, a piece of cork bark for something to hide if they wish, and nothing else. They created their own world by webbing. Don’t be afraid to remove the whole webbing if required, they are very prolific webbers and can rebuild it in a few days. They are amazing hunters that can take down something up to their own size. Maybe I need to look for a new one. Juvenile females are the best, because they will become larger and live longer. Males may be showy, but unless you want to breed them, which is difficult due to timing issues, aren’t worth it.

      Majority of Male Spiders especially those species who’ve molted at least 3 times(Indicates an age of over a year) will die, if they’re not devoured by the female, they’ll suffer a fatal heart attack. There’s a reason why Sexual Cannibalism among Spiders is such a well known myth.

    You mentioned the magnets taking some legs by snapping down. I've got a few of those enclosures and I've taken to either sliding the lid off and on, or using one of the magnets as a hinge and rotating the lid, instead of lifting the lid off.

    I had the honor of seeing this species in the wild while vacationing on the island of Kos in 2022. A small Greek island off the Turkish west coast. I already knew that this species lived there and had made it my goal before the vacation to find this spider. In a remote, high and rocky region I found what I was looking for under a stone. A large female with a cocoon! It was the only animal I could find in two weeks of searching. I left her and her cocoon in her place, but I took lots of photos and videos.
    In addition, I was able to find some large wolf spiders of the Hogna genus.

    Hey Tom, nice video as always. They are cute little things. I have some velvet spiders, but not Eresus, I have a couple of Gandanameno sp. raised, and yes, they grow so slow. But they awesome. My biggest girl is around 1,5 inch and eats a lot. I keep them bone dry as well and they get hydration only through food. I feed the slings, like all my tiny ones, with young Thermobia domestica, and the adult ones with wax moth larvae. Inside the enclosure I have dry moss and small branches, no soil or something, and they web a lot. They even react to movement infront of the enclosure and they can see much better than most spiders we keep, but not as good as jumping spiders. By the way, I also have young ones as a communal setup, to raise them up, it works. They are realy cool.
    Stay save Tom and have a wonderful week!
    Greetings Chris 🤘

  • @LadyKakizaki
    @LadyKakizaki 7 месяцев назад

    Hey Tom! Awesome video as always! I'm not a fan of these or jumping spiders just for the simple reason that the people who keep them tend to be overwhelmingly obnoxious and anthropomorphise to the point of actually putting the animal in danger, then attempt to carry these habits over to tarantulas (excessive handling, inappropriate enclosures, overfeeding, and so, SO many "my cutie is digging today! Has anyone else seen this?? OMG! My little darling is just SO QUIRKY!" posts where the writer doesn't seem to recognise that, shockingly, spiders are spiders.) Not trying to be an elitist, and I'm sure there are some good ones out there, but the influx of both jumping spider and velvet spider keepers on TikTok and on the Facebook groups has become EXTREMELY exhausting and honestly turned me off from keeping these completely. Anthropomorphisation is somewhat more understandable with jumping spiders as a few studies have shown they do have a higher level of intelligence than we originally thought, and they are such visual animals who rely heavily on eyesight, plus those big eyes really are adorable, but carrying these behaviours and beliefs over to tarantulas can be extremely detrimental both to the care of the spiders and how we are perceived as a hobby. It makes us look insane, not like well-read, articulate, and educated individuals who, while we love and respect our tarantulas, recognise their limitations as emotional creatures. Furthermore, many jumping spiders can thrive in pre-made enclosures featuring little witch houses with hard acrylic or resin sculptures that look like cute little dioramas, however, many of these enclosures are not only inappropriate for tarantulas, they are flat-out dangerous, and, as I said before, people who come into tarantulas after having kept jumpers or velvet spiders don't understand that and will attempt to put their new and much larger pets in similar enclosures. I can't tell you how many Facebook posts I've seen with little fish tank sculptures in tarantula enclosures that are wildly inappropriate should the tarantula climb and fall, which is significantly more of a risk for tarantulas than it is the aforementioned species. That said, I'm glad you're keeping them so I can appreciate their beauty without having to associate myself with the stereotype of jumping spider/velvet spider keepers.
    The hobby has become such a toxic cesspool that encourages people to COMPLETELY rely on others rather than learning through experience or research and penalises criticism, constructive or otherwise, to the point where newbie keepers who are struggling rarely actually receive useful advice. Sometimes you have to tell someone "yeah, you kinda messed up here, maybe try this next time" and many Facebook groups don't even allow that, so the new keeper walks away having learned nothing and goes on to make the same mistakes because the only allowed posts are "oh you did everything right! Sorry for your loss :(" which really helps nobody. I have zero issue with people who have DONE their research reaching out to more experienced keepers for confirmation (for example, I obsessively research and have for years, but Tom Patterson and Kelly Swift have never once ignored me when I reach out and ask for advice on something when I hit a dead end), but people who come in having done absolutely zero research and expect everything to be hand-fed to them have become a persistent frustration. I understand that researching involves critical thinking skills that not everyone has, and not to be harsh, but if researching isn't something you're willing or able to do in ANY capacity, then maybe find a hobby that doesn't heavily rely on research, and one that doesn't involve living animals. I know I'm coming off as a jerk here but I hope that you and I have had enough positive interactions over the years that you can understand that this is coming from a place of frustration and trying to address a serious ongoing issue we have in the hobby rather than bashing people for the sake of it.
    In other news, I did successfully pair my E. uatuman! It was really a surreal and magical experience. I attempted pairing 3 times since we last communicated, the first time, the male sat in a stress pose for an hour almost to the minute and then wandered into her den. She promptly chased him out but he made a smooth recovery and after about 40 minutes of tapping, he was able to get insertion. The second time was a flop, he didn't move for over 2 hours and I had other things to do so I wrapped it up. The third time, he went right over to her den, disappeared in it for about 2 hours, and I found him outside the enclosure in the bin I put both enclosures in. After he disappeared down the burrow there really wasn't much I could do so I left them together and periodically checked in. He's still alive and well and eating and he obviously wasn't eaten by her so I feel pretty good about it. Fingers crossed the pairing took! Hope you and your family had a great Thanksgiving, hope to hear from you soon!

    Good video, and solid advice which matches my own experience with them for whatever that's worth. Very easy to care for. I picked up two slings earlier this year, at about the same size as the sling you showed here, and one has grown significantly faster than the other. Because of this, I'm assuming one is likely male, the other female but I'm not sure whether to assume the one that got bigger faster is female (as those are bigger as adults), or male because of the faster growth rate...*shrug*, time will tell I guess.

    Great video showcasing an awesome species! I was curious if you've ever dealt with these guys getting stuck in a molt? My E. walckenaeri sling has been half stuck for at least a week now and I've been thinking about helping it out a bit with a wet q tip but I'm worried about harming it because of this species' strong preference for bone dry conditions. Plus it's about 1/8 inch and I don't want to squish it lol. If you have any advice or ideas, I'd love to hear em!😅

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  4 месяца назад

      Thanks so much, Mckenzie! I have not, thankfully. What part is stuck? I would assume that exposing it to a bit of moisture for a short period of time while you got the molt off wouldn't be a terrible thing as long as it went back to dry conditions. You may try a moistened cotton swab, and obviously, you'll want to be super careful if you do. Good luck!

    Awesome video as always!! It’s great to learn more about the non-tarantulas care. I’ve wanted to get into these guys and jumping spiders specifically for a while now, but their super tiny size as slings kinda makes me nervous haha. I’ve done fine with tiny Ts though so I’m like “I’m sure I’ll do just fine.” But they’re s m a l l and they’re not tarantulas so it’s a little intimidating.
    Do you have any tips on how to handle fruit flies? I hate dealing with them cuz they always seem to start getting all over the place whenever I try feeding them off. I tend to just use tiny nymph red runners, but I like having the option to use them if I’m low on nymph red runners. They’re just so much of a pain that I tend to give up and just use roaches haha

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  6 месяцев назад +2

      I do! Get a glass cup and some aluminum foil. Tap some fruitflies out into the glass, cover the top with the foil, and put them in the freezer for a couple minutes. You'll know when to take them out when they stop moving. Then, just sprinkle them into the enclosures while they are cold and inactive. Hope that helps!

    Hiya, hope y’all had a good thanksgiving 😊
    Soooo I had one of these beauties and was keeping it with a little moisture, it was doing great. As I watched more vids on them the consensus was keep them dry, so i changed my husbandry. Guess what?? It died same as 3 out of 4 of my jumpers. The 4th surviving jumper I went back to adding some moisture and she lived for 1 1/2 years.
    Leave it to me to have the odd and unusual happen.

      @TomsBigSpiders  6 месяцев назад

      Hey, Darcy! Oh no! I've heard from several folks that they do fine dry (and mine has) but maybe there are exceptions? And I always misted my jumpers to give them somethng to drink. Hmmm. haha

    They are adorable. She is adorable. When do you see the orange on the abdomen? How long til you know if it is male or female? This is a lady spider. No orange. Right? She is too small for me to keep. My hands shake and she would have her world rocked with me. But I have room for her. I may just think about this. How are the bites? So this is good for the desert. Where do I get these?

      Hey, Joyce! Isn't she cute? Supposedly, IF it's a male, I will see some orange on the next molt. The bites would be very mild overall, and yes, it would be great for the desert! Fear Not Tarantulas currently has them in stock. :)

      Hey, Plawson! Unfortunatlely, males only get the emboli at the end of their pedepalps when they have had their ultimate molt and matured. This spider is not yet mature, so it wouldn't have those yet. As for this species, the males will also get the color on the abdomen while the females will not. Hey everyone, I have a quick question about my T. Vagans. I have a T. Vagans who is 3/4 inch and has a nice burrow going right now, she (unsexed, I just say she out of habit) has only eaten once in my care and didn't throw the bolus out of her burrow, what can I feed her that would be best so I don't have to worry about digging her out because of mold issues from her keeping her boli? She's only eaten once so far in my care (I just got her a week and a half ago) will she start throwing them out if they start getting moldy or what is the best bet? I know everyone isn't digging out their fossorials every week so there must be something I'm missing. From what I've read on the forums most people say they'll toss them out if it bothers them so I wanted you guys' opinions (hopefully Tom will see my question too) and if that's true then is there anything I can feed her that will be least likely to cause issues?

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  6 месяцев назад

      Hey, Irish! Are you positive that she didn't throw it out? At that size, they can blend in with the dirt quite well. Most spiders are very clean and will toss out dead prey or remains unless something is wrong. I've only ever had to dig one up because a cricket got wedge in a spot, died, and rotted. It also shouldn't depend on the prey whether or not they toss something out. I would just keep an eye on it, just in case.

    This is the same care I've used for two of our previous velvets, but they died anyway. We have a 3rd one and now I see our care was correct, I'm so worried, because I have no idea what went wrong two times before.

      @fightswithsteakums 6 месяцев назад

      @@TomsBigSpiders I'm not sure. I got all 3 from different shoppes. But as weird as it sounds, I wonder if elevation or climate has anything to do with it? I've kept them in either area of the house, with and without a dehumidifier, same result. I'm really out of ideas on what it could be, but we're pretty sad over the losses. We have bunches of tarantulas, but the velvets just haven't been sticking around for us.
