This was the species that changed my view on tarantulas. I thought they were just big brown bugs, and then I saw these, and down the rabbit hole I went.
One of my favorite species. Think I've got 7 of them right now. Their care is so easy that I gave a juvenile to one of my friends for her birthday, who never even thought of keeping a spider as a pet. (I did ask first) 2 years later, and it's a fat, healthy, gorgeous, confirmed female. She tells me how she loooves her spooder and is always talking to her(lol the weirdo) and admiring her webbing. It's SO rewarding to bring a friend into the hobby and see them start to really appreciate how amazing spiders are 🥰
My daughter has just bought me my 1st GBB & a P.Regius for my Christmas. The GBB is a sub adult & I'm so excited lol i can't believe she splurged so much money on me, I'm used to getting a box of chocolates if anything! They'll be here on the 14th & she wants to help set up the enclosures with me, i think my interests may be rubbing off on her which is a big thing, considering this is the same girl that used to scream for dad at the 1st sight of a spider in the house😂
LOVE my GBB. Had a little over a year, super fast grower and crazy easy to care for. Mine is really laid back and has yet to show any stress. Got it at maybe 1" dls at a convention, now about 13 months or so later it's around 4" and about to be rehoused in its final enclosure. As for the semi arboreal argument, I usually explain that they live in a lot of desert like scrub land, so climbing into small shrubs is in their nature. Not a tree dweller, a shrub dweller lol
Thank you for this! Im very new to the hobby, not even 2 weeks. I bought mine from Fear Not Tarantulas. I chose an A. Purpurea and Aphonopelma Chalcode. I also got a journey pack for beginners. Tanya and her team chose a GBB and Acanthoscurria geniculata. I was thrilled to see the GBB. Just 6 months ago, i was an arachnophobe. Now, im about all things spider. When i was unpacking my slings, it went off within a hitch, that is until i got to the GBB. 😅 she came out full speed! I always keep a white bath towel down on my counter, so I can easily see it if it bolted. I was holding on to my wits by the skin of my teeth. I did get her safely in her enclosure after she took a lap around the towel. S/he is amazing. Within 24 hrs it had a good start on a web, same with my Avicularia Purpurea. They both have great feeding responses. The GBB is amazing to watch. The A. Purpurea is also a beautiful spiderling. My A. Chalcode is very tiny. It doesn't seem to dig, nor web. I don't know if that is normal or not, but seems healthy. I usually prekill her food. I feed all mine red runner roaches. My Acanthoscurria geniculata already molted. S/he is doing great, too. I have found so much joy in being a T keeper, that I ordered 5 more. I've watched a lot of your videos and will be checking out your website, articles, and podcasts. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. I owe most of my knowledge to you.
Congrats on your new slings and welcome to the hobby! You've got some great species there. Be careful, because it can be quite addictive! haha I got my first years ago as an arachnophobe in part to try to get over my fear. It took a while, but I'm definitely cured. For the A. chalcodes, what do you have it in? For the tiny ones, I put them in vials with an inch or so of substrate. I try to keep the bottom layer moist and the top dry and give them a starter burrow. This can sometimes encourage them to dig. Best of luck!
Got a few, one died, it molted all wrong, trieed to save it by soften the molt up with water, i got it all off, it lost 2 legs though, it ate a few times, it molted again, about a 2 months after it died without molting anymore. Water and food was no problem. Sometimes you are just unlucky. But mine GBB grows slow as hell. Thank, Tom :O)
I like your content Tom What's not to love about a GBB?? My wife's stupid cat knocked over my GBB enclosure this week 🤬. The Herpcult enclosure was destroyed, but somehow the spider appears unharmed and has been eating well. I did find rehousing my GBB to be tricky, it is not defensive, but it is nervous and bolts quickly. It took a little time before I could wrangle it up in a catch cup. I've been a keeper on and off over the years, but I have always kept "beginners", so I am not used to the speed Keep the informative content coming
Im getting my GBB sling in a couple of weeks, and that will be my second tarantula! I just assumed even GBB slings would like it damp, so thanks alot for all the info :)
Thanks Tom, another brilliant video. Probably my favourite T the colour together with feeding response is truly amazing. As for premoult ive had one skip a sling skip single feed and a few days later it had moulted and was feeding again definitely a highly recommend speices once the keeper gives them respect they deserve. The hairs aren't too bad either in the event you do get haired.
The first sling I grew up when I got into the hobby ~10 years ago. Only have 1 because my lady has set the expectation so high! Keep up the great content 🤘
Nice video, Tom! I actually have one because of your recommendation. I have also found giving a bit more height does work out well. Mine is pretty laid back too. They are beautiful!
I've got babies left from my last breeding project O_o If you're in Texas =/ (I've never actually shipped any spiders) Eventually I hope to setup a website and start selling online... one of these days
Loved seeing this! Along with a G. Pulchre yearling, I've got a roughly 1" GBB coming this week as well from Fear Not - can't wait. What a beautiful T. Nice job, as always. -Greg
Hello Tom, I hope you and your family are doing well. A very nice video you're sharing about the Chromatopelma cyaneopubescens. I especially like how succinctly the spider's behavior is described, particularly regarding the space they need and their preference for shrub habitats. I find that aspect very important. As you mentioned, it's similar to Pterinochilus murinus - they are relaxed when the environment, in this case, the terrarium and setup, is well chosen. Tom, I finally got a Eucratoscelus pachypus! I'm so happy. Ever since I saw it in your video, it has been at the top of the list of species I'd like to care for. Thanks to LOVEFORTARANTULAS from Belgium, I now have a wonderful female. Perhaps I'll be lucky and find a male for breeding at some point. Wishing you a great week, and stay healthy! Greetings, Chris
Hey, Chris! Thank you so much, bud! This is one that a little extra room can go a long way (kind of like with OBTs). And congrats! That's fantastic news! Someone got sling in over here, but they were SO expensive. I'm hoping that folks will start breeding them so that the prices will come down. I REALLY want to get a male for my ladies. Happy Holidays, bud!
Great video Tom, totally agree with the extra height aiding in the calmness of the T, i had 3 females years ago but, sadly no longer, i now have a large sling, always kept them and obt's in slightly higher than required, as you said, it makes them feel safe, if they decide not to use that height, its no problem, its always there if they change their mind. Hope you and billie are staying well 👍🏻
Hey, Sean! Thanks so much for chiming in on this. A lot of folks get confused by the fact that they appreciate a bit of room. And I hope all is well you you! Thank you!
@@TomsBigSpiders yeah i can understand that, i mean, we're always saying T's dont need as much room as people think, and now here we are saying these guys, do better with more room, its not actually having more floor space though, its being able to use the dimensions inside the enclosure in the best possible way.
I’m really really thinking about getting a T. The two at top of my list is the GBB and the C versicolor. Also thinking of a Chaco Golden knee. Thanks for the video!
Two great choices (they were my third and fourth tarantulas). The GBB is definitely more forgiving than the C. versicolor. The Chaco is one of my favorite species of all time. If you go that route, try to find one 1" or more, as it will grow more quickly. Thanks!
@@TomsBigSpiders just got home w two new slings. Alas the only pet store within about an hour that I’d trust to get a T from didn’t have a C versicolor and the owners daughter just got their last G pulchripes two weeks ago! They had a sub adult male GBB and about an inch+ sling but it had literally just molted - so we didn’t even want to to disturb the lil one They had a couple really nice looking A. avicularia and about a 1 3/4 inch B smithii. Both very fairly priced so I did get an arboreal and terrestrial new world after all. And he gave me a deal to boot since I also had to buy some other supplies for a leopard gecko enclosure I’m working on. Told them I’d stop by next week (ish) to check the GBB tho the price was a bit high. Super excited about these two. Tonight is a deep dive into specific care. 👍
AWWW! I love it! Mine is about this size and I'm thinking it may be in pre-molt but not sure. The first thing I did when I lost my first one was purchase another one immediately! My last girl had a bad molt. :(
Nice footage of your GBB. I keep my OBT with a little extra height which keeps her calmer, I agree. Don't have a GBB but I can see it would work the same for them. Have just picked up a female C. Doriae, gorgeous girl😊
My GBB attacks water droplets on the webbing too 😆 I've found it's a good way to make sure it sees roach that's just sitting there. If yours is a molt away from adult coloration, mine might be too 🤞
i had a 5.6 inch mature male who made a 12inch square carpet of web in his final home about an inch off the ground, couldn't see a single inch of the substrate bar from the perfect semi circle in the corner where the water dish was lol
Wonderful work as ever both! My GBB Beyoncé is supremely well behaved and used a central elevated branch to create a little tunnel network with multiple entrances and exits. She's not as visible as she once was but if she's happy, I'm happy!
Hey Tom & Billie, my GBB was my first "real" rehousing as she was a good 4" and rapidly outgrowing her home, and I say "real" meaning I was actually going to cup her instead of the old "put small enclosure into large enclosure and let them move in by themselves" gag. As it was my first real rehousing and the whole "they can be skittish and FAST", I was dreading it. But... what a little darling. Thanks to your videos, I was calm and slow with my movements, and she was an utter sweetheart. She wasn't entirely OK with what was happening, she kicked a little hair, but overall, she was calm and docile. LOVE this species.
Hi Tom & Billie, hope you’re both doing great. I love the GBB’s, it’s their colouring that’s very special. The carapace almost looks velvety, it’s adorable! I bet she’s got her enclosure webbed up and it’s looking cool. Billie got some brilliant shots again today 😮Thanks for the recap on this awesome Tarantula! Take care and enjoy the rest of your weekend 🕷️🕷️🙌😊😊
Hey Tom! Just wanted to say hey! I’ve been listening to the podcast for a very long time now and some years and just wanted to say I love the videos aswel as the podcast! (I don’t know how to comment on the podcast but that’s my fault not yours haha!) thanks for the help as usual and happy Christmas!
I have 7 Ts atm, 5 NWs and 2 OWs.. GBB has been a dream species of mine just under T. stirmi. I have a sling arriving on Friday 24th! I am so excited, 6 year wait and finally I'm getting one!
Thanks for the GBB video. I gotta say my GBB is the most frustrating of my spiders right now. Got her at .5” in April, molted in May to ~.75”, had a few meals and hasn’t eaten since July. It’s been an absurd amount of time since this little thing has eaten or molted out. It’s the only spider really giving me anxiety right now.
Our temps are in the low 70’s. Little guy actually tried to molt a week ago, but got stuck. I don’t know what happened. They had a water dish filled and dribbled water twice a week on their web, offered food every other week. Sad and frustrated I lost the little guy. I think I’ll try again soon.
Daaang this is too much of a coincidence! I just got a 3" inch female like a week ago haha I bought .5" sling in 2019 and it molted as a mature male last January. It was such a little guy probably not more that 4.3" Inch and half of that was just legs. He passed away a few months ago and I finally got a good size juvenile that's a confirmed female. A must have in every collection!
Just picked up a gbb today. Pet store had him for several years with no one buying him. He’s hooked out, so I wanted to give a dignified retirement home.
Hey Tom & Billie 🥰 Thanks for yet another great upload! 🤟 I've been keeping mine in 12x12x18" (30x30x45cm) exoterra with mesh on top since they were about 2" or 2" 1/2. I gave them a long, curved piece of bark in the back, they did just like an arboreal (webbed themselves a cosy chamber at the back). 😅 I was giving them a lot of moisture back then, now I keep them on the drier side. I still give the substrate a good soak once in a while (every few months) to maintain the plants and the clean up crew alive (isopods & compost worms). The mesh top allows for enough evaporation anyway (no condensation as you'd get with a full-bodied top). They're about to mature (over 4" 1/2 big now), after 1 1/2 years in these enclosures, so it clearly proves the "keep them 100% terrestrial" concept wrong. Quite laid back for GBBs, never flicked a hair either. ;-) On hindsight, I guess a 12x12x12" terrarium would've been more than enough for them, though. If I get some arboreals next year, I might move the GBBs to this size of an enclosure. Would probably be more visually appealing, too, since the empty 6" are useless for a GBB. Cheers guys! Hope Santa is getting you all great presents haha 😜 -Thomas
Hey,, Thomas! Shhhhhh...don't say that out loud. People will FREAK if they hear you gave it 18"... hahaha I'm just kidding, although people have FITS when someone says that they gave their extra height. Drives me nuts. I had two in the 12 x 12 x 12 ones, and it seemed to work great. Mine were terrible hair kickers until I rehoused them into the taller enclosures. After that, they never kicked again. Thanks so much for chiming in, and Merry Christmas to you and yours!!!
@@TomsBigSpiders haha yeah I once posted my GBB setup on that very well known & respected board, people were going crazy. 🙄😅 You guys have a good one, too! 🕷☃️🎄🎊
Great video! My GBB molted about a week ago, and I'm going to move him into his forever home in the next couple of days. I just want to make sure he'll take a cricket or two first.
Thnx for the vid.. love the Info. Just got my fist gbb sling a couple months ago. Lots of web.. always out. Very colorful. Right off the bat it's very unique compared to my other slings. Great spider
I concur with the 12x12x12 enclosure for housing. My adult female lives in one and does very well in it. I’ve never had a bolt or any hair kicking from her and I’ve had her for 4 years. I keep my female h pulchripes in a repti zoo 12x12x12 set up the same way as my gbb and she’s always been a sweetie too. Just because they are a tarantula doesn’t mean we shouldn’t give them options, they are not all the same 😊
Great looking spider! And I would have to agree too with plenty of space, my girl has yet to kick any hair and thats including the rehouse a month ago!
I can absolutely relate to your tip at 13:19 . I rehoused my ~0.75-1inch GBB from a 4" tall enclosure to an 8" tall enclosure and the decrease in defensive behaviors was night and day.
Wow, yours was defensive even that small? I must have a super chill one. She was in a 4x4 cube until she was an inch, maybe 1.25 inches. She has always been slow and dainty, for lack of a better word. However, I did move her into a Tarantula Cribs medium switch, so she could web high and be truly semi arboreal, and she is less dainty, and actually jumps when I put meal worms through the air holes. She catches them mid air, lol. I hope she never gets defensive, she is a bit skittish, since her last molt, but she is still pretty dainty, lol, except when she leaps for food. Haha.
@@calliew311 Their feeding response truly is an incredible sight. I chalk my GBB's previously defensive behaviors up to the fact that he loved to web up the lid of the enclosure (in the 4" enclosure), so every time I would go to feed him I would be ripping up at least some of the webbing and he was left out in the open (completely my fault). Since moving my GBB to the 8" enclosure, also from Tarantula Cribs (because how can you not use your best enclosure on this species), he has been a total sweetheart (except around food as you mentioned).
Love GBB´s! My girl has always been a bit carefull, almost meak at points. I see videos all the time of peoples GBB´s rushing out and hitting their prey like trucks, being spunky and showing some attitude or even kicking hair. Mine has only kicked once, she gets scared and kicks crickets away with her front legs if they are to big (she is adult btw) and she doesent touch worms at all. The relativley small abdomens and long pre-molt periods whilst being lethargic worried me a lot in the beginning but you get used to it in time. She was one of my nine first tarantulas i ever got ( got nine at the same time when i turned 30) and will always have a special place in my heart. On a sad note, i just lost my G pulchripes to impaction. She had been doing great for several years now. Always got super big booty and then went in to 5-6 months pre-molt periods. This time around she didint get as large booty as she usualy did and the pre-molt period had been almost 11 months. Last week i found her in a death curl and i couldent save her. I just couldent figure out what i did wrong since i always do my research and follow the consensus care guidelines for my animals. Today i was going to clean her and her cage out and when i lifted her body she kind of "popped". I am now pretty sure it was impaction since there was a lot of poop coming out. No signs from the outside.
Hello, Jarl! They are just such awesome spiders. And sounds like you have a sweet one there. And I'm so sorry to hear about your G. pulchripes. That sounds absolutely horrible. :( It could have been the result of a bad molt.
Hey Tom! Took me a while to get around to this one; work has been nuts- everyone and their mother (literally) has mice (I'm sure Billie can understand...) Wonderful video as always, that rehouse was *chef's kiss* perfect. I'm a D. dia fan myself, I know you just mentioned this in your podcast regarding them and the GBB, but I have a reason! I started the hobby with 3x each of GBB, OBT, and C. versi. All 9 were males. All. 9. No I wasn't ripped off, they were 3/4" slings and the vendor is one of my friends and she and her husband do not have the time to sex those under a microscope just to make me miserable. I just had terrible luck. I raised all 9 to adulthood and sent the C. versis and GBBs off to breed. No one needed the OBTs so 2 died while I was looking for someone to take them and the third I finally found someone to take him. I later got an additional GBB from a friend who matured out literally 2 days after receiving him. Yay. This has left a very bad taste in my mouth for this species. All 4 were psychos. It's honestly starting to irritate me when people give my favourite genera- Lampropelma, Phormingochilus, and Omothymus- grief for being "crazy" like, bruh, have you ever met a MM GBB? But yes, the 4 males, especially with 3 of them being my first EVER tarantulas, really ruined the species. I MUCH prefer the D. diamantinensis, sadly I struggle MASSIVELY with this species, I have never lost so many specimens of one species before, so I've given up owning a spider with this colouration since I clearly can't keep D. dia alive (frankly I'm too embarrassed to order ANOTHER from my vendor cause he's going to start asking questions) and I have zero interest in raising another male GBB. Furthermore, as you mentioned, the "semi-arboreal" thing is somehow wildly misconstrued by new keepers in the groups. I know you touched on this in your podcast regarding GBBs as semi arboreal, but WOW it is so, so bad. You ever look at something and have to sit back, close your eyes, and take a deep breath? I really, really, REALLY struggle to understand why people hear "semi-arboreal" and set something up FULLY arboreal. Someone posted a picture of a 1 inch GBB sling in a giant Exoterra with 1 inch of sub, some pointy skull, and a leaf or something. The GBB was all the way at the top over pointy wood and bone pieces. I just can't anymore. I'm Mrs. Nice all day at my job; I deal with stupidity that borders on criminal on a daily basis and I just can't come home and be Mrs. Nice on the groups where constructive criticism is disallowed because people are too sensitive. I'm polite but if someone is doing something wrong I will point it out, POLITELY, and effectively (I've listened to your podcasts regarding unsolicited advice and similar topics at least 20 times each.) Honestly, I'm going back to Arachnoboards. The Facebook groups censor you to the point of not even being able to give advice and that's frankly a massive waste of my time. BACK to the GBBs, the mix of the 4 males, the unnecessary kicky behaviour and skittishness, and the semi-arboreal thing and general idiocy on the groups regarding this species in particular, the GBB has to be one of my LEAST favourite spiders sadly. They are absolutely beautiful but I have negative interest in ever owning one again, so I'm glad you have them so, again, I can vicariously appreciate their stunning beauty through your videos. Sorry to be overly negative, it's a very rough time of year at my job as we are still playing catch up with overdue services and I'm pulling 65 hours a week. Hope you and your family have a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year! - Charlotte Edit: I want to reiterate that the reason I bring up the high-strung behaviour is not that it's a turn off or overwhelming or unmanageable, but it really grinds my gears when people say very negative things about species and genera I love (the aforementioned Asian arboreals) and then sing about what wonderful beginners GBBs are. I have to stand up for my favourite genera, lol. Second edit: On rereading this, I feel bad for being so negative. You're sort of spider therapy for me; my boyfriend isn't super interested in listening to me talk for hours on end about spiders which is valid and my hobby friends are great but don't always have super articulate responses to what I say, they just agree and move on. I really appreciate you taking the time to reply to my comments and being a safe space for me; this hobby saved my life and I have very strong opinions about it but I ADORE my spiders and I would not still be walking this earth without them, and without you, as you were the first resource I found and have continued to be amazing and helpful throughout my journey. Your podcasts are helping MASSIVELY with my seasonal depression (on top of my chronic depression; I'm miserable all the time but I'm even more miserable in the winter, yay!) and they allow me to stay positive when the world seems- and literally is- so dark. Thank you Tom, keep up the awesome work.
I’m not sure if you’ve done a video on them yet but I have a hooked out Mexican rose grey and in the hobby it doesn’t seem to be a very popular species, I almost never see anyone posting theirs. Why do you think that is? And maybe you could make a video about them if possible
New to the gbb and have noticed the males seem to get their full abdomen color sooner than the females that stay striped until they are bigger. My male is barely 2 inches and already lost all stripes. Mainly just an observation, but curious if this is with all and not just from what I have witnessed?
Hi Tom how’s it going. I’m that guy that lives in Watertown Ct. that had that six inch acanthoscurria geniculata that molted. Although she did molt, she hardly moved for 😊 weeks after, well she just died. I’m heartbroken I only had her for a couple of months. 😢I don’t what could have happened. So to be on the safe side I’m tearing down the enclosure and starting from scratch. Any thing else you think, any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Hey, Ralph! Oh no! I'm so sorry to hear that. If you only had her for a couple of months, I wouldn't think that you were responsible as, unless your husbandry was terrible, that shouldn't be enough time to kill one. Is it possible that the person that you bought her from kept her too dry?
Hey Tom, I kinda got into an argument with someone about GBBs on the book of faces. Lol. He was citing your website info, and I was citing this video and your podcast. He even used your name and said he had "sources"... until I told him we have the same source. He didnt like someone's taller enclosure. He said they burrow underground and make webs by the roots. Anyway, I pointed him here and I hope he doesn't hate me. My girl is living in a 6x6x8 and she will be rehoused to a 12x12x12 Tarantula Cribs switch cube after her next molt. The extra height helps so much. She has webbed up 6 of the 8 inches height and the whole area footprint of the enclosure. So, I stand by your opinion and mine that giving them room to web and not ripping the roof off their enclosure by destroying the webbing to feed and water, is our best bet for a happy and calm(er) GBB. Have a good weekend!
This is one of the reasons I stay off FB. Hahahah They have been photographed on tree trunks several feet off of the ground and up in the bottoms of bushes. A few extra inches in an enclosure is nothing compared to that. This is one of the most annoying arguments in the hobby right now. Hahaha
Tom I've now got a ggb and I keep it just like a common pink toe. One of the local pet store I normally go to my feeders for my turantulas. I bought three others with it. The one I have is definitely that same color right now. I love the feeding response it has. The one I've is a b. Minimax and wonder if you can do a care and husbandry video because there's nothing about that. Love the videos that you produce.
Dude! My GBB looks exactly like yours. Mine is looking like a male very leggy. Just molted and looks amazing. comes out every night to have a look around.
Hi Tom. Two Days ago, i become 4 Slings calling Theraposidae sp. dorado. I found nothing about them. Do you know about something of this Species?@@TomsBigSpiders
One of the few T's that looks beautiful at every stage of development.
I agree 100%, Mike!
This was the species that changed my view on tarantulas. I thought they were just big brown bugs, and then I saw these, and down the rabbit hole I went.
This is one of the ones I show people who think that they are all brown! :)
The rabbit hole is deep O_o
One of my favorite species. Think I've got 7 of them right now. Their care is so easy that I gave a juvenile to one of my friends for her birthday, who never even thought of keeping a spider as a pet. (I did ask first) 2 years later, and it's a fat, healthy, gorgeous, confirmed female. She tells me how she loooves her spooder and is always talking to her(lol the weirdo) and admiring her webbing.
It's SO rewarding to bring a friend into the hobby and see them start to really appreciate how amazing spiders are 🥰
Oh and yeah I Do go help her out when it comes to rehousing cuz she's just a little bit intimidated =P
That's so awesome. They really are an amazing species, and one that I'll always keep.
I have had these in the past just got myself a grown on sling at the moment cant wait for it to grow
That's awesome, Michael! This is such a fun species to grow up!
@@TomsBigSpiders thats for sure

Hi, Louise! They are amazing spiders!
Hi, Helen! That's awesome...what a great gift. Congrats! And that's so cool that the interest is rubbing off. :)
@@TomsBigSpiders thank you! Now if i could just get my son to stop calling the GBB a "creepy wee thing" that would be great 🤣

Thank you!
I just noticed the Avatar sweater! F Yeah 🤘
They put on one hell of a show live
LOVE my GBB. Had a little over a year, super fast grower and crazy easy to care for. Mine is really laid back and has yet to show any stress. Got it at maybe 1" dls at a convention, now about 13 months or so later it's around 4" and about to be rehoused in its final enclosure.
As for the semi arboreal argument, I usually explain that they live in a lot of desert like scrub land, so climbing into small shrubs is in their nature. Not a tree dweller, a shrub dweller lol
Great explanation! I try to tell folks that as well (although some seem reluctant to believe it!)
Awwww...I'm sorry to hear that. :(
I like your content Tom
What's not to love about a GBB?? My wife's stupid cat knocked over my GBB enclosure this week 🤬. The Herpcult enclosure was destroyed, but somehow the spider appears unharmed and has been eating well.
I did find rehousing my GBB to be tricky, it is not defensive, but it is nervous and bolts quickly. It took a little time before I could wrangle it up in a catch cup. I've been a keeper on and off over the years, but I have always kept "beginners", so I am not used to the speed
Keep the informative content coming
Thank you so much, Rob! Yeah, they can be a bit skittish, and they can really run if motivated. The speed definitely trips some folks up!
Hey Tom! Great video, picked up my first GBB at an expo today after hearing all the great things about these guys. Thanks for all the great info!
That's awesome...congrats! And you're most welcome.
Im getting my GBB sling in a couple of weeks, and that will be my second tarantula! I just assumed even GBB slings would like it damp, so thanks alot for all the info :)
You can keep a damp corner, but that's about it. I definitely don't keep them on totally moist sub like I do with most of my slings. :)
Yeah, I was just telling someone that I never had any issues with the hairs. And they really are awesome spiders! Thank you so much!
The first sling I grew up when I got into the hobby ~10 years ago. Only have 1 because my lady has set the expectation so high! Keep up the great content 🤘
This and an L. parahybana were my first slings as well. :) Thanks, Meagan!
Ooo im gonna have to rethink my gbb enclosure now 😬🥺
Nice video, Tom! I actually have one because of your recommendation. I have also found giving a bit more height does work out well. Mine is pretty laid back too. They are beautiful!
I'm so glad to hear that you've experienced the same thing! Thank you!
Thanks for this Tom! I really want to keep D. diamantinensis. Not concerned that it is more diminutive than GBB. Have a great holiday season!
You as well, Christopher!
I've got babies left from my last breeding project O_o
If you're in Texas =/ (I've never actually shipped any spiders)
Eventually I hope to setup a website and start selling online... one of these days
Mine has room to clime & web, she loves every inch of it 💙💚🧡
Hey, Candy! I don't think that people realize that they climb in the wild!
Loved seeing this! Along with a G. Pulchre yearling, I've got a roughly 1" GBB coming this week as well from Fear Not - can't wait. What a beautiful T. Nice job, as always. -Greg
That's awesome...I love the GBB! Congrats on grabbing one!
You gotta love those batman emblems on there abdomen when they are slings and young adults.
I know...it's so cool!
They had a sub adult male GBB and about an inch+ sling but it had literally just molted - so we didn’t even want to to disturb the lil one
They had a couple really nice looking A. avicularia and about a 1 3/4 inch B smithii.
Love GBB's I got 4 of them such beautiful tarantulas
They really are, Lee!
AWWW! I love it! Mine is about this size and I'm thinking it may be in pre-molt but not sure. The first thing I did when I lost my first one was purchase another one immediately! My last girl had a bad molt. :(
Hi, Amy! Awwww...I'm so sorry to hear that!
Nice footage of your GBB. I keep my OBT with a little extra height which keeps her calmer, I agree. Don't have a GBB but I can see it would work the same for them. Have just picked up a female C. Doriae, gorgeous girl😊
Hey, Gary! I do the same with OBTs, and mine are quite calm. And congrats...that's awesome!
My GBB attacks water droplets on the webbing too 😆 I've found it's a good way to make sure it sees roach that's just sitting there. If yours is a molt away from adult coloration, mine might be too 🤞
Hey, Joe! I will sometimes spray the roaches to get the spiders to notice them. haha
i had a 5.6 inch mature male who made a 12inch square carpet of web in his final home about an inch off the ground,
couldn't see a single inch of the substrate bar from the perfect semi circle in the corner where the water dish was lol
That's so awesome. My female did something similar!
Wonderful work as ever both! My GBB Beyoncé is supremely well behaved and used a central elevated branch to create a little tunnel network with multiple entrances and exits. She's not as visible as she once was but if she's happy, I'm happy!
Man, your name game is sooo on point. haha I love it! I hope all is well with you!
They are such awesome spiders. And if you give them a little room, they are usually fairly calm. Thanks!
Hello, Joanne! We are both doing great! And the coloring really is amazing. Thanks so much!
Brilliant video Tom, as always very informative and enjoyable and a beautiful species featured.
Thank you so much, George! I hope that you have a great holiday!!!
Hey Tom! Just wanted to say hey! I’ve been listening to the podcast for a very long time now and some years and just wanted to say I love the videos aswel as the podcast! (I don’t know how to comment on the podcast but that’s my fault not yours haha!) thanks for the help as usual and happy Christmas!
Ha! Thank you so much; I truly appreciate it! And Merrry Christmas!
Hello great video information Tom
Thank so much, Moon!
My GBB took a mealworm a day before it molted. Nonsense of premolt whatsoever! Legs went from a golden yellow to blue in about 8 hrs!
Wow, that's crazy!
I have 7 Ts atm, 5 NWs and 2 OWs.. GBB has been a dream species of mine just under T. stirmi. I have a sling arriving on Friday 24th! I am so excited, 6 year wait and finally I'm getting one!
That's awesome. Congrats!
@@TomsBigSpiders Thanks, she arrived safe and sound, she is doing good and has eaten a few couple times so far!
Oh man...that is really frustrating. I'm so sorry to hear that. What are your temps?
Hey, Jem! Great timing on my part! haha And I agree that everyone should have one. I hope that all is well with you!
Just picked up a gbb today. Pet store had him for several years with no one buying him. He’s hooked out, so I wanted to give a dignified retirement home.
Awwwww...that's really awesome of you. I hope that little guy enjoys some quality time with you!
@ he’s a biiig dude. I tried to feed him yesterday, and he spent an hour or so rubbing the mealworm with one of his feet, lol
Hey Tom & Billie 🥰 Thanks for yet another great upload! 🤟
I've been keeping mine in 12x12x18" (30x30x45cm) exoterra with mesh on top since they were about 2" or 2" 1/2.
Quite laid back for GBBs, never flicked a hair either. ;-)
On hindsight, I guess a 12x12x12" terrarium would've been more than enough for them, though. If I get some arboreals next year, I might move the GBBs to this size of an enclosure. Would probably be more visually appealing, too, since the empty 6" are useless for a GBB.
Cheers guys! Hope Santa is getting you all great presents haha 😜
-Thomas
You guys have a good one, too! 🕷☃️🎄🎊
Yay I don't think I've ever caught a vid of urs right away!
Ha! That's awesome!
Great video! My GBB molted about a week ago, and I'm going to move him into his forever home in the next couple of days. I just want to make sure he'll take a cricket or two first.
Congrats on the molt and good luck with the move!
Thnx for the vid.. love the Info. Just got my fist gbb sling a couple months ago. Lots of web.. always out. Very colorful. Right off the bat it's very unique compared to my other slings. Great spider
Thank you for watching and for commenting. And that's awesome! I love growing these up!
Just because they are a tarantula doesn’t mean we shouldn’t give them options, they are not all the same 😊
Thanks for chiming in, Darcy! That's what this one will be going into. :)
Love them! I always get asked what my favorite spider is and this one is definitely on my top 10 list! Great cover Tom as always.
They are just awesome spiders. And thank you, Noriv! I hope all is well!
Great looking spider! And I would have to agree too with plenty of space, my girl has yet to kick any hair and thats including the rehouse a month ago!
Thanks, Josh! And I'm glad that you've seen the same thing.
YAY! My absolute favorites!!!🕷♥️🥰😍🤗👍♥️🕷
Thanks, Lisa!
Hey, Ryan! That's what happend when I rehoused my skittish females into enclosures with more depth. They never kicked hairs at me or bolted again.
Another wonderful tom and Billie video My GBB sexed out as a female… love the Gbb they are awesome
Congrats on the lady...and thank you!
Hey Tom! Took me a while to get around to this one; work has been nuts- everyone and their mother (literally) has mice (I'm sure Billie can understand...)
Wonderful video as always, that rehouse was *chef's kiss* perfect. I'm a D. dia fan myself, I know you just mentioned this in your podcast regarding them and the GBB, but I have a reason!
- Charlotte
Edit: I want to reiterate that the reason I bring up the high-strung behaviour is not that it's a turn off or overwhelming or unmanageable, but it really grinds my gears when people say very negative things about species and genera I love (the aforementioned Asian arboreals) and then sing about what wonderful beginners GBBs are.
Beautiful ❤ I love this one too!! Those colors are stunning ❤
They really are pretty spiders, Melody!
Thank you Tom!
Thank YOU for taking the time to comment, Amanda!
Great video as always
Thanks so much, Chantal!
How about a video on the "mini GBB" Dolichothele diamantinensis? It's been years since they had their own.
I'll do one when it's time to rehouse my juvenile.
I’m not sure if you’ve done a video on them yet but I have a hooked out Mexican rose grey and in the hobby it doesn’t seem to be a very popular species, I almost never see anyone posting theirs. Why do you think that is? And maybe you could make a video about them if possible
Hey, Garrett! Well, in the US at least, they just aren't offered very much. I will definitley keep an eye out for one!
New to the gbb and have noticed the males seem to get their full abdomen color sooner than the females that stay striped until they are bigger. My male is barely 2 inches and already lost all stripes. Mainly just an observation, but curious if this is with all and not just from what I have witnessed?
Hello! So are, I've only had females, so I'm not sure. I'll have to keep an eye on this one!
Hahaha
I've been in the hobby for about 6 months and can't believe I still haven't gotten a GBB🤦♂️
You've got to get on that, Jairo! haha Seriously, they are awesome spiders.
Hello, Eric! And I don't have one yet, but I'll keep a lookout!
Dude! My GBB looks exactly like yours. Mine is looking like a male very leggy. Just molted and looks amazing. comes out every night to have a look around.
That's awesome, Brandi!
I knew a vid was coming out since you did your replies to comments today 😂
Same lol
You two are the first ones to ever mention this. haha Guess what's coming later today? ;)
@@TomsBigSpiders ayeeee let's go!
my gbb is the exact same size, hopefully her rehousing goes this smooth 😂
I'm sure it will, Alex!
How bad are the hairs on Gbbs
They didn't bother me much at all, but different people are more or less sensitive to certain species.
Would a ten gallon glass enclosure with like three to 4 inches of substrate be good for an adult?
Yes, if you didn't use a mesh top and gave it plenty of things to anchor its web to. I used a 12" cube for my adults, and that worked out great.
I've always wanted one of these, but I'm afraid of the hairs.
The good news is that the hairs don't seem to be that bad. Mine would kick all of the time for a while, and I never had an issue.
How to acquire them? Thanks!
Hi, Julie! This species or tarantulas in general? I usually order mine online, but you can also get them at pet shops and exotic pet expos.
Getting one from fnt next weekend, if it matures to male, itll be my 4th. Ive never had a female.
Hey, Daniel! Are you serious? Man, that is really crappy luck. My fingers are crossed for you!
Love this Spider. But haven´t one, couse i am scared of the speed from this Species.
That's understandable, Maggimausegeist.
