He listens to direction really well, when told 'he's excited' McGann totally changed and his acting was so natural I wasn't sure if he'd actually come out of character and was himself. Superb acting.
That camera's having a good leer, isn't it? Apart from him being so wonderfully good looking, he's such a good actor. When the director asked him to play 'excited', he changed his whole performance rather than just reading the line in a more excitable way.
This proves that Paul McGann is and always was the right choice for the Doctor. He's always been a fantastic Doctor, he plays the role with enthusiasm, charm, and makes the role completely his own. Say what you will about the TV movie, while it has many problems, it did give us Paul McGann as the Eighth Doctor, and that alone makes it worthwhile. Funfact: Fox and Universal (Universal was the American studio actually responsible for making the TV movie as FOX was only the broadcaster and ironically would've been the one responsible for keeping McGann's TV series in American going after FOX passed) didn't want a regeneration from McCoy at all and wanted Eddie Murphy for the role of the Doctor. He actually auditioned for the role and I hope that tape never sees the light of day, or if it does, its kept as a stern warning for those looking to cast an American in the role of the Doctor.
I could see Gene Wilder pulling off a great Doctor, Walken would be more for the narm factor (spoof on SNL maybe it would be funny to see). But definitely it should be kept strictly British talent for the role, even Tom Hanks said so when they approached him!
Just realized how much of an insensitive idiot I was with the "narm factor" comment. Yes, Gene Wilder would've been great as the doctor young or old. As an act of contrition, I'll reveal that To get Paul McGann cast as the Doctor, they had to cast a "name actor" for The Master. Christopher Lloyd was the producers first choice. I think he would've made a much better impact than Eric Roberts (whose camp Terminator ended up being more expensive than what Lloyd was willing to do the film for)
I would actually be curious to see a leaked audition tape of Eddie Murphy, though. I kmow that he was hell-bent on an angst for playing more darker, dramatic roles when his career begun to stall at the peak of his primes in the 1990s, but... Eddie Murphy impersonating the Doctor??!!
Paul is bloody brilliant here. He is definitely one of the best Doctors and it is such a shame that he has only had two on-screen appearances, as he does such a good job in the audios. Come on BBC, give the Eighth Doctor an online miniseries or something!
Watching this you can really see how perfect he is for the role. I really love his Doctor a lot. But listening to the proposed story, and WOOF, I'm almost glad it never took off. He kills it in the audios though. He is, and always will be the Doctor.
Joshua Micah We all have our personal favorites, (mine being Tennant), but McGann was definitely SEVERELY underrated, and should have had a television series.
If Paul McGann and 3 seasons of Russell T Davies writing he’d be up there with Tom Baker and David Tennant in terms of iconicness to the series. The greatest doctor we never really got.
One of the best actors to ever take on the doctor, it’s a shame we never got to see more of him on screen besides the movie and the mini episode he was perfect! the outfit, the energy, the hair, the tardis! it would be a dream to have at least a few specials with him, he deserved so much more
I highly suggest everyone here to listen to the 8th Doctor audio adventures. They are extremely well done and you get to hear McGann at his best. The 8th Doctor is actually very well-flesh out and a very deep character.
I like how everyone pokes fun at the idea of making The Doctor and The Master related in cannon, yet ironically that was supposed to happen in the third doctors final story, if not for Roger Delgado's death
+RassilonTDavros They had thought of that idea. " Later, they thought of the Master as the evil half of a single personality. The Master's name was dreamed up as another counterpart to the Doctor's - like that of his enemy, "Master" is an academic title. "
+Sound Effect Studios Close! "In the Third Doctor's original final episode concept, Written by Robert Sloman, it would have revealed the details of the relationship between the Doctor and the Master: either that were actually brothers or the latter Time Lord was an amalgamation of the former Time Lord's darker personality.Roger Delgado's incarnation of the Master would have redeemed himself and given his life to save the Doctor, after which the Doctor would have regenerated; however, this story was never developed due to Delgado's accidental death. Over thirty years later, this idea would be reused in The End of Time with John Simm's incarnation of the Master sacrificing himself to save the Tenth Doctor from Rassilon"
That's a man who is good at his craft, the skill to instantly switch from the text the way he memorized it, into a very natural different version, at a single second's prompt.
Yeah, but not really, he still has a human retinal structure. The master says that he's half human two. It could just be that as the doctor states to grace that he could regenerate into the form of an other species, he could have just regenerated into even more of a human-like body that happened to have that kind of retinal structure...
+Rhyan Bennett - according to the book written for the movie and the books that came after he locked the TARDIS to a human retinal structure and programmed the structure into his body using the TARDIS's chameleon arch (when he was still McCoy) the 'on my mothers side' bit was meant as a joke. He did this to prevent the Master from taking control of his TARDIS - not thinking the Master would be stupid enough to try and take a human host (as it wouldn't last long enough and take him along with it) and that even if he did he'd corrupt it too much to use it to take the TARDIS. Of course the Seventh Doctor's plans always have a crucial weakness - he didn't think the Master could manipulate a human into helping him (if he tried to FORCE a human into helping him he'd end up corrupting them as well) and it would have worked except the Master is slightly... hypnotic :P to lend credence to this passage from the book; when Chang Lee opens the bag he's stolen from the Doctor containing his sonic and other toys... there's a fob watch. Not only that but it looks a LOT like the Fob Watch the Doctor (and later the Master) used. Though in actuality the presence of that watch was used by the writer of the book to try and clean up some of the uncompleted plot-holes that the movie left. A lot of people complain about the movie being full of plot holes and one-off references but the truth is it was MEANT to start a new series. It was MEANT to make people wonder what the hell is going on... it's just to bad they were never resolved outside of the expanded universe.
The fob watch was used by Paul Cornell in his book Human Nature, which was an 8th Doctor story before it was rewritten for the 10th Doctor on TV. The Master has been in human form from Tom Baker's era to the Time War, so the Doctor making the assumption that he wouldn't is a bit silly. But so is the Doctor, in all fairness. There's also a 10th Doctor comic where he mentions to Martha that he once fooled the Master into thinking he was half-human. Another interesting thing here--the Master originally was supposed to be the Doctor's brother, but due to Roger Delgado's death, it was never filmed and never became canon.
WHY was he given such a short run? Some of the most class acting , charm and depth from this man.. A film and a mini movie, really?! I hope I find out why someday lol
It was just the politics of TV. Doctor who was a dead show and the Americans agreed to co-produce this pilot movie with the hopes of it going to series, but it just wasnt popular enough. There were too many cooks in the kitchen, too many people wanting a say in the story, and the result was a fairly poor story. If it had been a brilliant story by a top class writer it might have succeeded, or maybe the American audience just wasn't there.
Oh this is FABULOUS!! I love what's interesting in that he's still playing the Doctor now in Big Finish coming on for Thirty years and his voice hasn't changed one iota! He's without a shadow of a doubt the best audio doctor ever. And was only surpassed on the TV doctors by David Tennant for me. I really Wish Paul McGann had the opportunity of a TV series 💖
You should watch the movie then. I loved his acting in it, but bare with all the cheese that came with it since it's a 90s American movie pilot thing... I still don't know the whole story about it, but they made it canon. lol
Oh gawd, McGann is SO handsome in this. Handsome old eighthy strikes again. They were right to pick McGann for the role of the 8th Doctor, but that script their making him read is...let's just say I wouldn't have chosen that one for him to read. LOL.
I wish they'd give him a full series. even if It's just a mini-series. I'd love to see more Paul Mcgann! and I'd love to see him deal with the start of the Time War and refuse to be part of it. Just having something to bridge the gap between the movie and his mini-episode would be brilliant!
Oh man, McGann is so smexy. At least they picked the right guy for the role. It's a shame we didn't see much of him as the Doctor. He should have a mini-series for sure, to fill in some of the missing gaps. Is it any wonder why I call this Doctor 'The Pretty One'?
I swear, The Doctor here is playing off The Doctor's grandfather Quences. Quences was the one who wanted The Doctor to go into politics. But you see, we aren't allowed to really know much about The Doctor's family so to bad for the most of us fans. ;) - But as for the half-human Doctor, Master his brother garbage...**BUZZER** Bang out of order! LOL Wrong!
This would have been very a very interesting mythology for the show. And it makes the whole “the Doctor is half human on his mother’s side” thing actually make sense.
Phenomenal! I urge BBC to have a two-parter in which the 13th Doctor and the 8th Doctor meet to solve some crisis. That would be only fair to a really great actor who was short-shrifted by the BBC.
Disturbing because it makes sense. He in the Classic era always had difficulty with Regeneration - the Human traits that resist Change impeded it . He is supposed to be of Noble blood but was shown living on a dirt farm, he was being sequestered until his eighth year when he could be Adopted. William Hartnell wanted the Doctor to have an identical twin son who evolved into The Master. However the implication was the Master had estates on Gallifrey if this scenario were true than the Doctor was not adopted as much as he was taken as a guest to live there. I would like to read that script one day.
Paul McGann is really a fine talent, and he sure shows it in his audition for the Doctor: his quick responses are like liquid flowing, nothing is forced or pretentious. Hurrah Mr. McGann! You certainly nailed it, sir. Thanks for continuing with Big Finish: a labor of love.
Imagine if we got this instead of the timeless child. I think it would've been a more satisfying change to the lore and explained why the doctor was always drawn to earth
+9th Doctor Same... wait a minute, are you one of my future self's? If so, I must say, the Ears and Nose are a huge downgrade from what I have... mind you, it's not easy beating this face of perfection.
The Big Finish audio dramas give a good impression of how magnificent he would have been if he had been given a series at least. The if onlys are piled a mile high when it comes to the eighth Doctor.
For all the movie’s many faults, the one aspect I never ever see anyone criticize is Paul’s performance-and rightfully so. They got the right man for the job, and I firmly believe he’s one of the very best to ever do it. Fingers crossed he’ll grace our screens once again for the 60th anniversary in 2023...
Fun fact. If Paul McGann didn't get the part it would have gone to Anthony Head!! Anthony Head told me this himself. I am hoping official Doctor Who production people of the 1996 tv film will release his audition tape. If the show was never even axed in 89 both mcgann and head would have been the doctor at some point which the fantastic Da Doctor Who Fan does a series on here on youtube which I highly recommend watching.
You know when I saw a picture of him in the present I thought “he must be in his forties” only to find out he’s 60, I thought David Tennant was in his 30s only to find out he’s 49, how do they look so young!?!?
Love the hair! I wish they hadn't cut it for "The Night of the Doctor" but it did show that time had passed (for those who'd never read the other material)
Whoa! Now I never was very keen about him being half human but couple with that kind of back story sounded awesome! Still probably for the best that didn't cone out as cannon. Man! I wish I could hear the audio dramas with Paul McGann... :/
So... I’m glad that the series that Paul was supposed to star in never happened. The whole half human thing and the Master and The Doctor being brothers is a bit absurd. HOWEVER, The Eighth Doctor himself is one of the best ever. He practically put BigFinish on the map.
Why didn't they keep him for the renewal series? I like Eccleston, but I'd LOVE to see some seasons with the 8th doctor. Paul McGann and Capaldi are the best actors among all
Why didnt we get this backstory!!!?? This is beyond amazing. The timeless child is even worse now compared to what this story could have been. Please bring back paul mcgann and complete the story. And if not just bring back our doctor paul mcgann
Right, if you're an aspiring actor, you should look at this. This is a dude, who knows his lines so well, he can just completely live in the character. See how much he changes like that? That is only possible if you're able to let go. He even seems to be improvising the repetitions of the lines.
It was first mentioned in the Virgin New Adventure Novels. The Room With No Doors introduced Penelope Gate, who was later assumed to be The Doctor's mother. In "The Nth Doctor" it's in one of the unwritten scripts about The Doctor's father, (called "Ulysses") having been in love with a human woman. The television movie relies upon both the Virgin NA novels and the unproduced pilots for a Doctor Who movie/new series (Ulysses was also set to appear in the unmade Paul McGann series apparently.)
He listens to direction really well, when told 'he's excited' McGann totally changed and his acting was so natural I wasn't sure if he'd actually come out of character and was himself. Superb acting.
not gonna lie but one of the most handsome of the doctors
Not gonna argue with you. Rowr!
David Tennant is the most handsome of the doctors! And it's true!
Michael Hernandez Actually, McGann and Tennant were both in their mid-30s when they first took on the role.
same i think he is handsome
I think he's handsome too!
That camera's having a good leer, isn't it?
Apart from him being so wonderfully good looking, he's such a good actor. When the director asked him to play 'excited', he changed his whole performance rather than just reading the line in a more excitable way.

Bradley Willard would be better than class
if you want more eight go for the books
Fandoms huzzah audio dramas too. There are plenty of audio dramas and you actually get Paul McGann doing it.
+MorphManDude Not sure if you fully read his comment.
Audio adventures
Watching this you can really see how perfect he is for the role. I really love his Doctor a lot. But listening to the proposed story, and WOOF, I'm almost glad it never took off. He kills it in the audios though. He is, and always will be the Doctor.
This Doctor deserved a better story. Oh, how he deserved a better story. . .
Yeah thank GOd that drama didn't become cannon
If I lived in the 90's I would have a crush on this guy. Never mind, having a crush in him right now :)
nab.. angkat telp dong
Why not, the man's aged like fine wine.
Paul McGann was the best doctor imho. If he had his own series with the visual quality of the newer seasons, it would have been mind-blowing.
Joshua Micah We all have our personal favorites, (mine being Tennant), but McGann was definitely SEVERELY underrated, and should have had a television series.
Stefano Pavone Really need t get my hands on those.
yes, the big finish episodes where we cant look at his beautiful gorgeous face!!
in the books you get graphic dicriptions of his beautiful eyes/voice/face in practically every book
he isnt the best doctor at all
He could be everyone's favorite if he had a series. Most handsome, most time lord-ish doctor with his clothes to me. Totally in love with hım.
If Paul McGann and 3 seasons of Russell T Davies writing he’d be up there with Tom Baker and David Tennant in terms of iconicness to the series. The greatest doctor we never really got.
The should give him a full series at least, taking place during the 8th doctor's personal timeline.
Two words: big finish
@@JadenJFilms But that way, it's accessible only to people who already are fans of Doctor Who. It wouldn't be accessible to new viewers.
One of the best actors to ever take on the doctor, it’s a shame we never got to see more of him on screen besides the movie and the mini episode
he was perfect! the outfit, the energy, the hair, the tardis! it would be a dream to have at least a few specials with him, he deserved so much more
He was so young and Absolutely dreamy! *swoons*
Eighth Doctor officially born at 0:51
So true.
Yes, as soon as his eyes lit up. ^_^
Kara Dennison “I think, I think, I think!”
Yep. I see it there.
Something happened here, and you aren't far from, "Come with me if you want to lie" or so many Doctors. YES
I would trade my arm for a series with Paul. He was such a great Doctor and he deserved better than he got.
1:02 Aaaannd, he's already the 8th Doctor.
I highly suggest everyone here to listen to the 8th Doctor audio adventures. They are extremely well done and you get to hear McGann at his best. The 8th Doctor is actually very well-flesh out and a very deep character.
Oh my goodness gracious... he is gorgeous!
jesus that change from before and after the guy said "he's excited" was crazy. paul mcgann is a great actor.
Fantastic Doctor, terrible script.
I love the BFAs and the EDA books. I would love to see a mini series with Eight, Charley and Fitz.
Mooooood
I like how everyone pokes fun at the idea of making The Doctor and The Master related in cannon, yet ironically that was supposed to happen in the third doctors final story, if not for Roger Delgado's death
Actually I thought it would've been revealed that they were two aspects of the same being- but I could be misremembering.
That Sounds more like The Doctor and The Valeyard's relation from Trial of A Time Lord to me
+RassilonTDavros that would be the Valyard
+RassilonTDavros They had thought of that idea. " Later, they thought of the Master as the evil half of a single personality. The Master's name was dreamed up as another counterpart to the Doctor's - like that of his enemy, "Master" is an academic title. "

He's almost 60 btw

The fob watch was used by Paul Cornell in his book Human Nature, which was an 8th Doctor story before it was rewritten for the 10th Doctor on TV. It has actually been dismissed. The doctor has referenced having a time lord father.
I am absolutely simping for this man🥺
he is an amazing actor
WHY was he given such a short run? Some of the most class acting , charm and depth from this man.. A film and a mini movie, really?! I hope I find out why someday lol

8th Doctor is the most handsome Doctor in classic Who !! He is my favorite Doctor of all time! ❤️❤️
The most suave looking doctor in my eyes
Wow. Just wow...If Paul McGann was literally a Doctor incarnation in today's series, he'd be contending as my favourite Doctor with Tennant.
Alaska RS big finnish
Why could I not take my eyes off his fluffy hair?
0:49 this was the moment the eighth doctor was born
0:45 - 0:50 now if you slow it down, you can actually see the exact micro second that the 8th Doctor was born.
Oh this is FABULOUS!! I love what's interesting in that he's still playing the Doctor now in Big Finish coming on for Thirty years and his voice hasn't changed one iota! I like the audition, but the script tells me that the Dr. Who movie could have been a lot, lot worse!

That was simpply amazing! He is and always will be one of my favourite doctor.
reminds me alot of The 10th Doctor he is actually such a good doctor they should've had more of him!
This would have been very a very interesting mythology for the show. And it makes the whole “the Doctor is half human on his mother’s side” thing actually make sense.

Thank you for uploading this.Paul's Doctor does live on in the big finish audio cd's.There great, check em out if you haven't already.
Perfect Doctor.
Absolutely fantastic! Give Paul his own series, BBC!
You know, if they made Paul the 14th doctor I wouldn’t be mad at all
You know when I saw a picture of him in the present I thought “he must be in his forties” only to find out he’s 60, I thought David Tennant was in his 30s only to find out he’s 49, how do they look so young!?!?
wibbly wobbly timey wimey. . .
@@senormedia stuff
Love the hair! I wish they hadn't cut it for "The Night of the Doctor" but it did show that time had passed (for those who'd never read the other material)
McGann killed it
Whoa! Now I never was very keen about him being half human but couple with that kind of back story sounded awesome! Still probably for the best that didn't cone out as cannon. Man! I wish I could hear the audio dramas with Paul McGann... :/
Bunch of them are on Spotify for Free
Man I just love those eyes!!!! And that stare!!! Wonderful. I always wondered if the Doc and the Master where related.
Paul McGann and Capaldi are the best actors among all
Wow those eyes :)
PAUL'S LEVELS OF BABYGIRL ARE BEYOND ACCEPTABLE!!!!
Paul McGann is my favorite Doctor, and I love the TV movie he did.
Think both tom baker and Paul McCann doctor I had a crush on growing up.
aghhhh why is he so perf?
Would have been interesting to see how this rewrite might have panned out - maybe as an alternative reality or something....
At least there are the Big Finish audio plays where he stars as the 8th Doctor in which he is amazing!
Russell, GIVE THIS MAN A SPINOFF OR MAKE A TIME WAR SPINOFF AND MAKE HIM A BIG PART OF IT!!!
What he's wearing here would actually be a good look for the doctor. also, isn't he proper dishy handsome?
That Bunburying is killing me.
Why didnt we get this backstory!!!?? This is beyond amazing. The timeless child is even worse now compared to what this story could have been. Please bring back paul mcgann and complete the story. And if not just bring back our doctor paul mcgann
Best voice ever.
After all the big finish stuff he might be my favourite
His audio plays as The Doctor are so fantastic though
1:44 omg his eyes are beautiful (Sorry, my english is bad)
We were truly robbed of a great few seasons with him
I've heard his audio stories are great.
Oh, if proof is needed that Paul Mcgann deserves a series of his own, but on screen, this is the proof
Oh man, why couldn't Paul have gotten his own full series?? This audition proves yet again how good he was in the role.
Right, if you're an aspiring actor, you should look at this. This is a dude, who knows his lines so well, he can just completely live in the character. See how much he changes like that? That is only possible if you're able to let go. He even seems to be improvising the repetitions of the lines.
What a beautiful man
It was first mentioned in the Virgin New Adventure Novels.
