  • Sooooooooo.... John's Fuel Filter Replacement project snowballed into a number of side projects, one of which we aren't sharing because he ended up replacing the protector plate that covers his gas tank - and he felt that simply wasn't a job he would recommend most people attempt themselves.
But for him to complete that job, he needed to remove the bumper cover - and that he feels the average backyard mechanic can do. The most common reason why you may need to remove your bumper cover: it's been damaged. Other reasons why could be you plan to install/replace a trailer hitch, or plan to change your fuel pump (and/or fuel lines). There's others, we're sure - but these are probably the most common.

I am sooo happy that you did this video !!! II can't believe I found one. I recently got rear ended. My Jeep body was pretty much in mint condition even though it's 21 yrs old. But my bumper got dented and cracked so now I have to replace it. And Im not going to pay anyone to do it. This really helped me A Lot . Thank you both !!!

We are so sorry to hear about getting rear-ended, that just sucks (and has happened to both of us) - but glad this video gives you the information and confidence you need to replace it. Good luck, and if you have any questions, just reach out!

Curious why you took it off? I’m taking mine off to install a metal “off road style” bumper. Thanks.

It all started because I needed to replace my fuel filter... it just snowballed into a more complex project (replacing the protector plate to my gas tank) - which required me to remove the bumper. But, like with you, there are other reasons someone may want/need to remove their bumper, so I figured I'd show I was able to remove it in my yard with my tools. I should reinforce that we are not encouraging anyone to do any of our videos themselves, but if they are inclined to try "simple" projects themselves, we show how we tackled them. Good luck installing your new bumper - share a picture when you're done!
