3:38 HOLY SHIT! It's the shooting star that Basal talks about later in the movie! It's the aliens arriving on earth! Edgar Wright's obsessive attention to detail is astounding.
I liked how it showed Gary defending Peter from that bully. Sure Gary probably exploited Peter's weak-willed character a number of times but he does care enough to stand by his friend.
@@alpine8186 it's actually very common, especially in British friend groups. You take the piss out of each other but only you can talk shit about them no one else
Probably why Peters dad seems to view Gary with disdain, presuming him to be a bad influence, which in fairness he almost certainly was. But Peter clearly holds his childhood friend in esteem, and that little clip of Gary immediately pouncing on the bully contextualises why.
That's the thing. When Peter's drunk later on in the movie, you see he really enjoys being with the group again. But the plot point's accurate where they say they had to bench him and they end up having to leave him later. I like to think that when Gary goes clean and adventures with the simulants at the end that he finally doesn't repeat his mistakes.
also shows just how bad Gary’s motivation is, in his youth he would step in to protect Peter at any cost but as an adult he’s so focused on remembering the good parts of his youth that he outright ignores Peter being in emotional pain when his childhood bully shows up and has a blasé “oh well, let’s keep going without him shall we?” Mentality when Peter is caught by The Blanks
What I love about it is the sheer amount of foreshadowing packed into this sequence. Great writing by Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright. And yeah, I did notice The Trusty Servant sign is the Reverend Green and The King's Head sign has Simon Pegg's face. Fantastic.
There are many Gary Kings roaming around in the towns in the uk, that’s why I love the character, he’s tragic but he’s also well observed.Men who shirked all responsibility for whatever reason and ended up stuck where they were in a state of arrested development whereas their contemporaries developed into materially successful adults with meaningful relationships. If you make no choices life makes choices for you. The fact is Gary is out there
I just noticed that during the flashback when Mr. Shepherd is asking younger Gary what he wants to do with his life, Gary is sitting in front of a school artwork poster that says *“What are you going to do with your life?”* Hahahahaha! The little subtle details that Edgar Wright puts in his movies always make me laugh.
I think it's great that in the opening young Gary is playing an electric guitar and is Steve playing bass. The electric is much flashier and gets more attention even though their both equally important in a band.
The aliens weren't very interesting, think that was the whole point. They were dull and all about conformity; about growing up and being civilised. Gary King wanted to remain forever young and debauched.
@@jamesmason8436 I get all that, but that caused every scene they were in to be completely uninteresting too. Anytime I rewatch the movie, I legitimately skip over every scene the aliens/blanks are involved in lol

My 21st birthday right there. Never had another night like it. Looking up at 10 to 5 in the morning and seeing the sun slowly rise from the sea. What a night
If you think you can get way with it then go for it. Your only 21 once. I remember we went out to a small pub at 7pm then another little pub after then we went to a bar then another bar and one more before we ended up at this club where we indulged in shots and drinks and dancing with a few very lovely women then drunk but happy it was closing time we all walked to a takeout drunk got food and walked the beachway home watching the sunrise in our nightout clothing while people walked dogs on the beach we was making our merry way home. What a night it was 😂
Honestly, I'm sure a lot of us have felt this way. I know I sure do, I constantly think "It never got better than that." When thinking about years past.
I've learned a lot about the meanings that each name of the pubs in the film are foreshadowing; The First Post (first delivering of a tap water, thanks to Andy) The Old Familiar (Sam's entrance) The Famous Cock (Gary not going there as propsed, because he is that guy) The Cross Hands (the first fight, in the toilets, with the blanks) The Good Companions (the five of them enjoying their pints) The Trusty Servant (Reverand Greene's arrival) The Two-Headed Dog (Gary and Sam's fight the twin blanks) The Mermaid (a pub full of girls) The Beehive (the next fight with blanks, swarming like bees) The King's Head (Gary letting it get to his own head) The Hole in the Wall (Steven breaking through in the Beast) The World's End (the title says it all, following Gary, Andy and Steven's argument with the Network)
One thing you understand in this movie about Edgar Wright's callbacks is that they're a form of love. There's a poignancy that the characters actions repeat themselves. Almost like they're being watched over by us.
I can relate to Gary's midlife crisis. I also have an unhealthy craving for the good old times. Everybody got busy. Nobody wants or at least tries to meet up and hang out anymore. It's sad...
One detail I've been wondering about: shortly before the film goes from "normal" to sci-fi we see Gary drinking from abandoned pints. I wonder whether this was done intentionally to give the viewer an alternate way of interpreting the movie: the abandoned pints contained some drugs/poison and the alien invasion was just in Gary's hallucinations? Maybe it was just coincidental though and the writers never had this in mind, who knows...

Ever have one of those nights that starts out like any other but ends up being the best night of your life? It was June the 22nd, 1990. Our final day of school. There was Oliver Chamberlin, Peter Page, Steven Prince, Andy Knightley, and me. They called me "The King". Because that's my name - Gary King. Ollie fancied himself as a bit of a player but really he was all mouth. We called him "O Man" because he had a birth mark on his face that was shaped like a six. He loved it. Pete was the baby of the group. He wasn't the kind of kid we would usually hang out with, but he was good for a laugh. And he was absolutely minted. Steve was a pretty cool guy, we jammed together. Chased the girls. I think he saw us as rivals. Sweet really. And Andy. Andy was my wingman. The one guy I could rely on to back me up. He loved me, and I'm not being funny, but I loved him too. There was nothing we were going to miss about school. Maybe Mr. Shepherd, he was one of the good guys. He used to ask me what I wanted to do with my life. I told him I just wanted to have a good time. He thought that was funny. It wasn't meant to be, not that night. Newton Haven was our home town, our playground. Our universe. And that night was the site of a heroic quest. Our aim? To conquer the Golden Mile - 12 pubs along the legendary path of alcoholic indulgence. There was the First Post, the Old Familiar, the Famous Cock, the Cross Hands, the Good Companions, the Trusty Servant, the Two Headed Dog, the Mermaid, the Beehive, the King's Head, the Hole In The Wall, all before reaching our destiny - The World's End. We took my car into town that night. We called her "The Beast" because she was pretty hairy. And so our journey into manhood began. We were off. We didn't waste any time, we hit pub one and we hit it hard. There was drinking, there was laughs, there was controversy, there were ladies, there were shots, there was drama, and of course there was drinking. By pub 5 we were feeling invincible, and decide to purchase some herbal refreshment from a man we called "The Reverend Green". Pint 6 put O Man out of commission, so we carried on without him. Good thing, I bumped into his sister at the next pub and we went into the disableds, and then I bumped into her again. Sam tagged along for a while, but then I had to let her go, I had another date that night. And her name was Amber. Nine pints in and it was us against the world. Things got mental in the Beehive so we tailed it to the Bowls Club, or as we called it "The Smoke House", which is where it all went fuck up. Everyone got paranoid and Pete chucked so we had to bench him. In the end we blew off the last three pubs and headed for the hills. As I sat up there, blood on my knuckles, beer down my shirt, sick on my shoes, knowing in my heart life would never feel this good again.
I know it's supposed to be a funny movie but my heart gets heavy everytime I see this opening because the last sentence and the "and you know what? It never did." speaks out to me so relatable, it hurts :/

I've been searching for the songs used here cos' it's not on the OST so if anyone could point me in right direction I would appreciate it.

anyone notice this narration and the events of the movie are like history repeating itself? the brawl at the beehive that lead to the smoke house, the order in which the friends lose members

Every 12 of 12 pub's names have a meaning in the movie
