  • This video is an historical overview on how you used to use the GM Tech2 scan tool to perform GM SPS Programming in what is known as Pass-Thru or Legacy Pass Thru mode for calibration updates. This could have been for the ECU or any programmable module in the vehicle, such as the EBCM, TCM, or Radio that you may have wanted to reflash. In this video we showed how you used to update the calibration flashed to the radio head unit as an example of the procedure. This is the second video in a series playlist I have done on the GM Service Programming System using the GM Tech2 and the various modes of updating the vehicle modules.
    Note: The Tech2 is no longer supported by GM for module programming. In late 2021 the SPS and TIS2Web system was deprecated, and replaced with SPS2 and Techline Connect. These current software solutions from GM no longer offer support for the Tech2 tool.
    GM SPS Programming Series playlist: • GM SPS ECU Programming...
    WARNING: Pay very close attention to the instructions around power cabling and battery readiness as a power fluctuation during an SPS programming procedure can permanently damage a controller module. GM recommends use of their EL-49642 SPS Programming Support Tool attached to the battery to avoid this. You can also jumper cable another battery to mitigate this risk. But do NOT attempt to use a battery charger for this purpose though. I review an alternative product here - • 1995+ GM SPS2 Programm...
    This video originally applied to the genuine Vetronix, HP or Bosch built Tech2 as well as high quality Chinese clones equally and for all makes under General Motors such as Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, Cadillac, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Hummer, Saturn, Opel, Vauxhall, and Saab.. The programming was illustrated using a 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt LS and the www.acdelcotds.com subscription service features using a Techline PC using Tech2 legacy passthru mode to update the Radio (again, note this approach has been deprecated by GM since late 2021). You may need a USB to DB9 serial port adapter, GM recommends the Tripp Lite Keyspan USA-19HS adapter.
    Originally applicable to model year 2008 thru 2013, which is when the Tech2 ended and was fully replaced by the GM Multiple Diagnostic Interface tool, or MDI and MDI 2 and TIS 2 Web subscriptions. This method is still available with TIS2000 and SPS for GM vehicles older than 2008 though, as an alternative to using Techline Connect and SPS2.

    PSA: Starting in late 2021 GM ACDelco replaced TIS2Web and SPS with a new software solution - Techline Connect with SPS2. This new software no longer supports use of the Tech2 scan tool, it is officially obsolete as far as GM is concerned.
    While you can still use the Tech2 for diagnostics, as a free non-subscription alternative to GDS2, you cannot use a Tech2 with SPS2 for module programming. You will have to either use TIS2000 offline, for vehicles 2008 and older. Or you will have to use a different J2534 compatible tool like the GM MDI or MDI2 with Techline Connect and SPS2.

      So, if i understand this, i have a flash i need to download to a 2005 Corvette, 18-NA-346, for a column lock issue (released in 2018). My Tech2 is now obsolete for this task of updating this utility file?

    • @DrShock
      @DrShock  11 месяцев назад

      For performing calibration updates, that's correct. The latest Techline Connect upgrades the system to SPS2 and that requires either an MDI or an MDI 2 interface to the vehicle. The Tech2 diagnostic functionality is delivered over either of these two J2534 interface devices via a Windows based emulator, Tech2Win, for older vehicles that require that. You can still use the Tech2 with SPS on TIS2000 (the obsolete DVD version) for calibrations released prior to 2008 though.

      @@DrShock I’m trying to add the front and rear heated/cooled seats from a 2006 Escalade Platinum to my 2003 Yukon XL 2500 Quadrasteer. Most people replace the BCM to have the functions work, but I would lose quadrasteer. How can I add this functionality? • @DrShock
      @DrShock  2 месяца назад

      Typically you cannot change the options in the BCM from how the vehicle was originally built by VIN. I'm not directly familiar with the BCM on that year truck series, but you would have to determine if the BCM has RPO (regular production options) that you can manually select or whether it is the more common type that is programmed by what GM calls a _calibration_ which is downloaded by VIN. In the latter case, you cannot change the options in the way you seek. I would suspect the forums you're reading about this have folks transferring the whole BCM because of this calibration fact. But it could be just because none of them own a Tech2, or have access to a MDI J2534 interface with Tech2Win emulator on their laptop. Both are very pricey tools.
      When swapping out the BCM, and not having these tools to reprogram it, I would also expect the mileage to be wrong and _possibly_ DTCs posted for any missing RPO modules which can prevent passing state inspection in some states.

    Great video. Finally found relevant info on GM programming. Question, I run an independent shop, installing a rebuilt 6L90 in a 2012 2500HD and need to program the TEHCM. I know this vehicle is not a CAN vehicle. Should I buy a MDI 2 and subscribe to GDS2 for 3 days and SPS for 1 vehicle or is there a better option that you would recommend? I don't have a Tech2. Also looking to future proof tech at the shop for newer vehicles.
    Thanks for your help.

    • @DrShock
      @DrShock  2 года назад +1

      Thanks. For a 2012 vehicle you could go with an MDI rather than an MDI 2. I don't believe the MDI 2's unique new protocols start being required until Caddy CT4/CT5s and Corvettes from 2020 upwards, though that list will continue to grow and expand that's also going to be limited by GM's moving away from combustion engine powertrains and aggressively into electrics on their 2035 electrification roadmap plan. With an MDI (either 1 or 2) you can have Tech2 coverage for legacy vehicles using the Tech2Win emulator sub with Techline Connect, so you don't need an actual Tech2 as a professional shop imo.
      For an individual or prosumer user, I'd straight up recommend an MDI clone. But while they, despite the fake news to the contrary, are 100% compatible with Techline Connect (SPS2, GDS2, and Tech2Win) they are not as robustly constructed and I wouldn't see them holding up long to shop drops and abuse like the original Bosch one. The MDI2 clones btw are not _real_ yet, they are currently just cosmetic copies of the same MDI1 boards. So for coverage on 2020s that require an MDI2, only the real McCoy will suffice today.
      So bottom line, I'd look for an used genuine Bosch MDI unless you do this alot. If you did these jobs alot, I'd instead suggest an used genuine MDI2. Hope this helps.

      @@DrShock Perfect! Just the knowledge and help I was looking for. You are a wealth of information. I don't do this a lot. Thank you so much for your fast reply.
      So just to clarify, get an MDI 1, subscribe to GDS2 and SPS and I'll be good to go?

    • @DrShock
      @DrShock  2 года назад +1

      Yeah, that's what I would do in the situation you've described. Used genuine Bosch MDI1, rather than Chinese clone. And _weekend_ subs to SPS2, GDS2, Tech2Win as needed that I'd charge to the customer. It's like $30 or so, check at www.acdelcotds.com for the current rates.
      For a DIYer, or prosumer, I'd always suggest a Chinese clone of the MDI. But for a shop you want some more ruggedness to the outside case and inside electronics. The clones are 100% compatible software wise, but if you drop them they are more likely to be damaged than a real Bosch.

I'm assuming Pass Thru is for when it's directly connected, but wonder if the other Tech2 option is what I'd need. Thanks again!

    • @DrShock
      @DrShock  2 года назад

      Thanks. Well TIS2Web has been discontinued by GM. So when you go to www.acdelcotds.com what they have now is Techline Connect. And it's support for the Tech2 is very limited, no remote mode anymore. Just the pass-thru like you see here. The Techline terminals stopped being desktop PCs with DVDs and TIS2000 at the GM dealerships around the time the MDI tool and TIS2Web came out (circa 2008 or so) and moved to only supporting laptops. So GM doesn't really cater to anything but a laptop nowadays.
      For a 2009 GM would expect the MDI tool to be used, rather than the Tech2 with a CANdi module. A 2009 is too new to use TIS2000 as well.

      I believe so, I haven't had a need to do a calibration on an older module yet since Techline Connect went live at the end of last year. But it's supposed to still support the Tech2. Working on it for a Cavalier/Sunfire. But for these years use the Tech2 by itself, no SPS. Go into Diagnostics, build the car, and then Body. Select BCM, then Special Functions, then Setup New BCM. For these years only a brand new GM BCM works, there's no support for used ones as the VIN, odometer, and other info was write once and GM prevents the tool from updating it.

    • @DrShock
      @DrShock  4 года назад +1

      In my experience, with these older vehicles that store it in the BCM, yes you should get prompted for the mileage by the Tech2 as long as its a brand new virgin BCM. If the Tech2 detects it's used, it won't let you change it. Past that you will get to pick the regular production options (RPOs) like the radio, cruise control, XM, etc. This varies across models alot though, and the older the vehicle the less was actually in the BCM. I've never seen trim numbers (vinyl) in a BCM myself, only hardware RPOs. But then I don't work on vehicles newer than around 2013.

    I think your the best person to ask , so if I set up a brand new BCM and PCM on a bench harness and program a module like a GM lan radio - it should stay NO VIN correct ? Because it will not accept any VIN from the BCM/PCM

    • @DrShock
      @DrShock  3 года назад

      Both a brand new PCM and a brand new BCM will *not* have a VIN out of the box of course. They will have some default value in the EEPROM memory location where the VIN goes though as part of the virgin image from the factory. I have not attempted what you described here as not performing setup on the PCM and BCM first would not be a normal repair approach, but I would expect the Tech2 to generate an error message of some sort in attempting what you are trying. A module like the radio will still find a no VIN match condition and maintain a Theftlock state because the BCM does not have the _same_ VIN it has stored already.

      I'm only familiar with two methods myself, one is very old where you setup a new BCM using the Tech2 alone (I presume this is what you were referring to). And another method is where you need SPS on TIS2Web (www.acdelcotds.com). Some older BCMs are completely non-programmable and you have to replace with brand new - ruclips.net/video/Chy9pIzoguA/видео.html . I haven't worked on a 2011 Impala, but I'd look first for the BCM setup menu in the Tech2 like I show in that linked video for 2005 models, I doubt it's there in 2011 but worth checking. If not, I'd look at what TIS2Web showed for SPS options on the BCM tab for this vehicle. There's got to be a path where for a new BCM setup you can set the mileage and/or VIN along with the options the vehicle has (like cruise control yes/no, etc). In most cases you cannot repurpose an used module, as the GM approach was to use a new one only for repairs so would suggest that route for the least hassle.

      I think you're asking Tech2 or MDI here right? And if so it's based on your vehicle not the radio, the scan tool is going to be communicating with the vehicle. For a 2007 the native tool of the time would have been the Tech2. But the MDI can emulate a Tech2 with a subscription to a software emulator GM calls Tech2Win on their ACDelco TDS website for use with older vehicles. The MDI will handle CAN (GM LAN) built in but the Tech2 will need a CANDi module between it and the vehicle to translate. The bigger challenge is the 2012 radio is not a stock GM part number for model year 2007, so SPS won't show you a calibration file for it.

      If you had a non-navigation 2007 radio from a different GMC than your own but the same GM part number, then with just a Tech2 (or MDI with Tech2Win) you would just do a VIN relearn procedure to unlock it. Since you're taking a 2012 one, this may not work but its the first path I would attempt. You don't need a PC connected for this one for 2007 (though with an MDI of course you would just for Tech2Win). And yeah what this procedure does is re-marry the radio to your VIN and thus release the Theftlock II lock.

I have my Tech2 plugged into the serial adapter, powered on, and matched the COM ports and baud rate with the ones my laptop gave me. However, every time I click test, the Tech2 switches to the screen with the symbols on it indicating that it is communicating. I dont know what to do. It says connection failed, but it is clearly communicating with the tech2 since the screen changes each time I click test connection.

      Some things I would check, did the Tech2 pass it's internal diagnostics tests particularly the serial test with the loopback connector plugged in? If that works ok I'd suspect the USB to serial adapter. There are some other comments in this video that I recall some links around adapters known to work with the Tech2 - some are not compatible with it.

    Ok, after decades of dealer work, my Hewlett-Packard TECH2 card can no longer be updated pass the 2013-2014 model year! Is this right? Retired and fixed income is no fun, but a storm destroyed my wife’s older GM. I want to get a 2015 Malibu LT and still like to be able to diagnose the problem...Even if I have to take it in. The techs I worked with have retired and some may know me, but just unsure in October of 2021 what my TECH2 will work with! Thanks to the Chinese flooding the market with cheap clones that break down-no repair and some have messed up module(s).
    Any thoughts that could tell me what to expect?
    The carline Malibu ran from 2012-2015, then change in 2016. I know I have lied to the TECH2 in the past to have it function fine on a 1 year newer model. I guess looking for current help as I don’t want to walk into a dealer tech for nothing! Thanks. DK, Omaha.

    But SPS tells me it has the latest calibration and won't reflash :(

    • @DrShock
      @DrShock  5 лет назад

      If you can read the calibration, that's not the issue. You cannot reflash the same calibration on a GM part anyway. You could if there was any problem reading the calibration, but if its readable SPS will just tell you that you have the latest calibration already.

    • @danpadure
      @danpadure 5 лет назад

      ok, so if the calibration is fine, then it means it;s just not communicating to other modules properly
      any other reason why it would not work?
      it's the battery charge control module from a Volt/Ampera, and after updating it won't charge from AC, it says that P1EE6 Battery Charger AC Voltage Not Present
      obviously the module worked fine before the update, so it must pe a software issue...

    • @DrShock
      @DrShock  5 лет назад

      In these kinds of situations I pull a comparable part from the local pull your own parts salvage yard vehicle for testing. I'm not familiar with this particular voltage not present error, but having another to test with helps zero in on root cause. While one would intuitively presume its a software/firmware issue, it can also be that the flash operation itself finished off a dying module. I have seen this at least once and the swap confirmed it wasn't the calibration level itself, but rather just a dying part.

    • @danpadure
      @danpadure 5 лет назад +1

      So the answer to my question is: in order to reflash again with SPS you need a VCI code. You need to be a dealership in order to request and receive the code
      Once entered, SPS will ignore all calibrations on the module and reflash
      Reprogramming worked, and now the module works!

      If you can find an original genuine Tech2 that's in good condition and hasn't been beat up in the dealership at a good price it's a better choice than a clone sure. But typically they are either going for 2-3X more than a clone, or pretty banged up and repairing them just isn't feasible. I've used the high quality clone model for close to 4 years now and never found anything from the GM services manuals it couldn't do. I've never bothered to subscribe to Tech2Win for my MDI clone, because I have the Tech2 clone. But my understanding is it can do anything a Tech2 can and is mostly there so you only need to own one tool (MDI or MDI2) as a dealership. If you look thru the comments I believe there's some info on USB adapters that folks have found to work. Originally GM only recommended the Keyspan USA-19HS adapter from Tripp Lite.

      @@scotttucker4075 So that description is somewhat inaccurate. Thru 2007 model year is true for TIS2000. And the part about the security dongle (key) is accurate. But the acdelcotds website is TIS2Web, not TIS2000. There's no subscription fees or costs at all if it's actually TIS2000 on DVD they are including. There are no subscriptions to TIS2000, it came out years before such a thing was possible over the internet/web. So all that costs part is inaccurate (also TIS2Web SPS is currently $40 per VIN for 2 *years* now).
      A _secured_ BCM I would presume refers to a locked BCM because GM doesn't allow you to reuse used ones once you program a BCM it's _locked_ from further programming on _most_ models. Even back in 2002 or so they were preventing this at the Tech2 level (scan tool reports locked BCM). I've got a few videos on this problem, you can't even use TIS2Web SPS to reuse it, you have to either get a new BCM or work on the circuit board chip itself. On the flash comment, I've got several videos on reflashing a PCM/VCM/ECM using TIS2000, you just have to be model year 2007 or older. Configuring anti-theft, again model year 2007 or older only with TIS2000. No subscription costs required.
      If you are only doing 2007 or older, get a Tech2 clone with a copy of TIS2000 included. If you need newer, no other option but TIS2Web (www.acdelcotds.com) and there you would be better off with an MDI clone but a Tech2 + CANdi module can work thru 2010 or so.
      If you go the Tech2 clone route, be sure you have a Windows 2000 or Windows XP PC around, TIS2000 only runs on that era of PC. And make sure you find a source for the security key dongle (most common is a USB type) for use with TIS2000. There is a _mod_ to hack out the dongle check, but if you're not PC savvy it can be more trouble than it's worth vs just getting the dongle key. Hope this helps.

    What is the website to o update tech2

    • @DrShock

      There hasn't been a firmware update for this tool since 2013, but it's where you pay for your Techline Connect subscription. GM does not provide updates for free. www.acdelcotds.com

    Hello I logged into the address you shows www,acdelcotds.com and it looked nothing like what you shows. I only see the purchase if the downloads ad to cart, but i cant find anything that looked like the TIS2000. thanks

      These website screens change all the time, no way any video can stay up to date in that regard. You can't get to SPS until you pay, then you'll be able to login and see the old familiar interface.

      @@DrShock You didn't get into the cable that goes to the laptop. Is it a straight cable or crossover? does the RJ45 plug into the Tech2 and whats on the other side to laptop?

    • @DrShock
      @DrShock  4 года назад

      The cable to the laptop is a USB to DB9 serial port adapter. You then plug the serial cable that came with the Tech2 into that. GM recommends only one USB adapter, the Tripp Lite Keyspan USA-19HS model. But some years ago, thru trial and error, I found that some clone ones worked for me. Thanks for pointing this out, I updated the video description to mention the USB adapter recommended by GM.

      @@DrShock Hi Okay i purchased my Tech2 with CANdi module used it's a Vetronix by OTC. I paid $1000 2 years ago, but never used it for programming because I didn't know how. The problem is it only came with the OBD black cable and CANdi module alone with 1 yellow RJ45 cable. Now about hooking to the web for programming, the Tech2 seemed to only have 2 receptacles on the upper left side of the tool one RJ11 and one RJ45 receptacle. It looked like you're plugged into the the lower one being the RJ45 correct? The yellow double ended RJ45 male cable does plug into the side RJ45 receptacle of the Tech2, but where does the other end go? Does this RJ45 other male end go into a RJ45 to DB9 adapter and then connects to a DB9 to USB adapter into the laptop? I do have the RJ45 to DB9, but not the USB, so i ordered USB 2.0 To RS232 DB9 Serial Cable Adapter Converter For PDA Satellite is this the wrong one? Thanks

    I think it is misleading, until you read the fine print below, basically you can't program more than the modules your car has....but hey...you have 24 month access.🤦🏼‍♂️

    • @DrShock
      @DrShock  3 года назад

      GM sells the subscriptions per VIN / per vehicle, so yeah just modules associated with the one VIN for 24 months. For personal use though, it is quite a bargain as the average shop will charge you significantly more just for one module _not including_ the labor to R&R the module. For $40 you get 24 months of _any_ module on _your_ vehicle, for no additional charges. Your tools, your parts, your labor, your way - that's complete satisfaction guaranteed. ;-)

      @@DrShock You can only program twice if you have 2 modules. I'm trying to trouble shoot my 2005 GTO and re link PIM to PCM due to me bricking original PCM, but I don't see that option with TIS2Web. These cars are a PITA as modules and security.

      Interesting. I did a vehicle last last year on TIS2Web with an MDI and SPS where I updated four _different_ modules in one sitting, just doing calibration updates proactively for the owner. I can't recall any sort of limit in past years either with SPS (other than the fact you cannot reflash the same calibration twice), though I've never had a situation where I needed to do two of the _same_ modules in one sitting. As best I recall you need a Tech2 to do the PIM relearn. Or alternatively, Tech2Win. Here's a link to the GM service information in a PDF over at EFI Live for what you're looking to do: www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&ved=2ahUKEwii8qe73-fuAhVEmVkKHXraBN0QFjADegQIBRAC&url=https%3A%2F%2Fforum.efilive.com%2Fattachment.php%3Fattachmentid%3D8911%26d%3D1283265494&usg=AOvVaw1iVv3LoyYe4-88wbreQ4wd

      @@DrShock I have a Tech 2 and have tried relinking via TIS2000, but will not do it. I have the PDF you supplied...👍. I don't see the option available when I try Tis2Web. I tried to follow what Spartanautoworks here on RUclips did to relink, but he showed the relink function and mine didn't. 🤷🏼‍♂️
      Here is an e mail from Acdelco:
      Vehicle Programming Software
      "Includes: 24 months access to program all modules for one vehicle (VIN)".
      If you program all the modules first the subscription then expires before the 24 months.
      The limit is the number of modules in the vehicle programming of a VIN or 24 months whichever comes first.
