  • This video is an overview on how to use the GM MDI scan tool to perform GM Service Programming System (SPS and SPS2) Programming in what is known as J2534 mode for calibration updates. This can be for the ECU or any programmable module in the vehicle, such as the EBCM, TCM, PCM, Radio, or IPC that you may want to reflash. As an example illustration, we will flash a new calibration onto the Instrument Panel Control (IPC) module. This is the third video in a SPS programming series playlist I have done on the GM SPS / SPS2 and the first with the GM MDI scan tool.
    GM SPS Programming Series playlist: • GM SPS ECU Programming...
    WARNING: Pay very close attention to the instructions around power cabling and battery readiness as a power fluctuation during an SPS programming procedure can permanently damage a controller module. GM recommends use of their EL-49642 SPS Programming Support Tool attached to the battery to avoid this. You can also jumper cable another battery to mitigate this risk. But do NOT attempt to use a battery charger for this purpose though. See my video on an alternative here - • 1995+ GM SPS2 Programm...
    This video applies to the genuine Vetronix, ETAS or Bosch built MDI as well as high quality Chinese clones equally and for all makes under General Motors such as Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, Cadillac, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Hummer, Saturn, Opel, Vauxhall, and Saab.. The programming is illustrated using a 2012 Chevrolet Cruze ECO and the www.acdelcotds.com subscription service features using a Techline PC using J2534 mode to update the instrument panel controller (IPC).
    Applicable to model year 2011 and up, which is when the Tech2 ended and was fully replaced by the GM Multiple Diagnostic Interface tool, or MDI and MDI 2, and TIS 2 Web subscriptions.

    Good video. It appears you were able to do a 30+ minute programming off just the vehicle battery. I have read in technical documents that a booster or their expensive power supply may have to be used for long programming procedures, and not to use a battery charger. Have you had any issues/experience with this?

    • @DrShock
      @DrShock  4 года назад +5

      That's correct, if you have a "long" calibration update you technically should have a GM EL-49642 SPS Programming Support Tool (Midtronics PSC550 Battery Maintainer) connected to the battery. However, it is a very expensive device that few shadetree mechanics are going to own. And no, you cannot use a battery charger because of the electrical waveform that puts out.
      Fortunately, alot of this guidance is cautionary common sense. If the battery is relatively new and you've just come back from a drive fully charging via the alternator its usually good enough for most SPS tasks. If I am doing radios or interior modules I'll usually run just off the battery. But if I were doing a PCM or BCM where the risk is higher, I would have a another battery via booster cables as insurance, which is one of the alternatives GM recommends (see gm-techlink.com/?p=8438)

      @@DrShock That's what I figured. Depending upon the current draw of the vehicle during programming, you could also use a power supply in parallel, as long as the vehicle battery is charged and you match the power supply voltage to the battery.. I have done this for some equipment at work (I am an electronics tech) where we needed the battery for inrush current. A second battery would probably be easier, though. Maybe I'll take a measurement on my car to see what the current draw is with the vehicle parked and the ignition om run.

      If you are going to need to send the module a new or updated calibration, you'll need the SPS subscription. If you are just doing testing, and your vehicle is older than 2014 you should look at the Tech2Win subscription, if its newer then then GDS2 subscription instead. These are just my suggestions, please research to be sure for your particular vehicle and module as I have not worked on a Trailblazer yet.

      @LS1FREEK I'd start with the USB to serial adapter, only certain ones will work on the Tech2. Page 34 of the Tech2 user manual gsi.ext.gm.com/userguides/GM_Tech2_User_Guide.pdf recommends the Tripp Lite Keyspan, which is at the top of this tested list of USB adapters - www.tech2wiki.com/doku.php?id=wiki:tech2_usb2serial_test_report&s[]=usb as the linked video you have shows communications errors that must be cleared before you can proceed. That TIS2Web communications diagnostic has to pass. The baud rate of 115200 has to match what the USB serial adapters device driver is set for as well (it is less important what the rate set is than that it match in both the driver and SPS config screens). Go into Windows Control Panel, Device Manager, and find that driver and pull up the properties sheet for it. One of the tabs is going to have COM port configuration, make sure the baud rate (aka speed) matches what is set in the SPS Java applet.

    Thanks, new subscriber, your information walked me through my first reflash with the MDI you recommended. I do have a question. I'm working on a 2005 Colorado and installed a used BCM. I was under the impression I could adjust the odometer reading to match my cluster but never was given the option to do so.. The mileage is stored in both the BCM and cluster. I'm trying to adjust the mileage UP not back. Any ideas? Thanks

    • @DrShock
      @DrShock  4 года назад

      For a 2005 Colorado it's stored in the BCM and the IPC just reads it from the BCM in that year (after a few miles of driving it should update). You'll need a Tech2, or a Tech2Win subscription on the MDI, for that model year to adjust the mileage. GM Service Bulletin #07-08-49-020D covers what programming approach is needed by model year/model type of GM car/truck. You can google and find this PDF for reference. That all said what is typically replaced is the IPC, not the BCM. And when the BCM is replaced, it's replaced with a brand new one and you use the scan tool to rebuild the cars options for it. Using an used BCM is a mixed bag of outcomes in what I've read over the years - be sure you research your vehicle year and model across the various forums for the gotchas.

      @@DrShock Thanks for the fast reply. I did my research and found a BCM that was comparable to my truck. It updated perfectly following your videos and everything works. The only glitch is the odometer as the used BCM had 110,000 miles on it and my cluster is showing 175K. I have both the MDI clone and a factory Tech 2 tool- not a clone. I'm told if the odometer reading in the BCM is less than the IPC, the IPC's mileage will freeze until the BCM catches up. If the IPC's mileage is less than the BCM it will update when the key is cycled twice, which I've seen personally in the past. I purchased the MDI because I was under the impression the mileage could be corrected with the BCM update and using the GM subscription service. I'll research your suggestions and will reply. Thank you

I am especially curious if I can use my Dell E6420 Core i5 Win 7 Professional 32 bit laptop. From what I read on Acdelco's site, the 32 bit Windows 7 Pro was not supported. I've got a couple of older Lenovo ThinkPads for this, I've used both Win7 and Win10 but both 64bit only. The Java applets on TDS use the 32bit Java runtime but I can't say whether you can get away with the OS also being 32bit. CPU wise your i5 is fine and listed in the support PDF - gsi.ext.gm.com/userguides/Aftermarket%20Infrastructure%20Guideline%20v1.0.pdf Some of this "supported" stuff just means you can't get any help from ACDelco as a dealer if you don't follow it, rather than it not working at all. When you first log into TDS and run the main SPS applet it will do compatibility checks. If you get through those checks and can read current calibration inventory you should be ok. Just make sure the battery is full up, and on a EL-49642 tender or booster if you're doing multi-module updates. Do not ever use a battery charger when doing SPS updates.

    Question, I remember a few years ago you would have to reset the electronic brake control module after resetting the electronic steering wheel position sensor. I didn't see you do that in this video do you still need to do that with the new software updates? Or have they removed that part of the steering wheel position sensor reset procedure? I'm sorry trying to reset the steering wheel angle sensor on a 2019 c7 corvette. I've done it before with the earlier software in a 2017 c7 vette from a couple years back and had to "re-learn" the brake control module steering angle after the steering wheel angle reset. Still required? Thanks! And great video by the way!

    • @DrShock
      @DrShock  3 года назад

      Thanks. In this video we're just upgrading the Instrument Panel Cluster calibration which has no relationship with other modules so nothing more needed there. I haven't had to do a steering wheel angle relearn yet so couldn't say, but it is possible for there to be scan tool procedure changes between model years. I would suggest using the three day Service Information (SI) subscription for the 2019 Corvette at www.acdelcotds.com to confirm the procedure specifics. The 3 day SI access would give you an online version of the Chevrolet service manual for your C7, along with any associated technical bulletins.

      Three/four different things you have going on here. Yeah so with an used BCM the EEPROM route is the only way to address the VIN and the mileage correction for these years ruclips.net/video/Chy9pIzoguA/видео.html . And for 2007, yes you need a Tech2 tool, or the Tech2Win emulator subscription for this MDI, to reset the options in the BCM to match the RPO code sticker in your vehicle. For the last problem, the Passlock security its again stored in BCMs memory and why I prefer to transfer the EEPROM rather than overwrite the contents. Thank you for the informative videos.
    I have a MDI I bought from SICOTOOL. It worked fine for a few months, then the laptop stopped recognizing it. I returned it to SICO for repair. Again it worked for a few months, then stopped. This time I noticed the mini USB on the unit had fallen apart, The plastic separator fell out of it and the terminals were touching one another.
    I sourced a replacement connector and had my local PC repair place install the new one. The MDI manager still does not see the unit and windows throws an error code.
    I did the hard reset that you show in the video. The MDI manager sees the unit and unit and updates the unit, but as soon as the update is complete, the MDI manager again sees the unit, but throws an error when trying to connect to it.
    At this point it is useless to me. I was wondering if you do any repairs on these units, or if I should just toss it.
    Thank you again.

    • @DrShock
      @DrShock  4 года назад

      That jack is one of the few things you can repair on the MDI units as there are no schematics available in the public domain. So they are essentially unrepairable. If its a genuine unit you could return it to Bosch for repairs. If it s a clone, you might try selling it for parts on eBay but no the clones cannot be repaired other than for jacks, connectors, and the plastic housing pieces. Just for grins, what is the error code you get from the MDI manager?

    • @0366Turbo
      @0366Turbo 4 года назад +1

      DrShock I do not recall seeing a “code”? It would just pop up a dialogue box saying the MDI Manager could not communicate with the MDI.
      Believe it or not, I actually got it working.
      The wireless card has a flap of hard plastic stuck to it. When I disassembled it for the jack replacement, the adhesive holding that plastic on had given up. And the piece was loose.
      When I put it back together, I neglected to notice that there are contacts on each side of that slot, that the plastic card trips.
      Once I reattached the plastic to the wireless card, made sure those contacts were made, the recovery was successful and the MDI manager connected to the device.
      I launched TIS2WEB and sure enough, GDS2 connected to the device as well.
      Thank you for helping me recover, what I thought was a brick!

    I have a 2016 Camaro, and I would like to use the $40 subscription from ACDelco to update my radio software so that I can have Android Auto. Every dealer I've tried wants $150 to do it, so I figured I'd save a few bucks. The service bulletin for doing the update says you just have to use SPS to download the update to a USB flash drive and then plug it in your car, so it doesn't use the MDI. However, from you videos, it looks like you can't open SPS to view software updates without having the MDI plugged into the car. Is this true? I can't pay the subscription fee and just download the software, I have to get the MDI or a J2534 device to be able to download the update, even though it's not used for the actual update?

    • @DrShock
      @DrShock  5 лет назад +1

      I've not done one of these, but I have read about these entertainment system firmware updates (not calibrations) that are USB based, but since the SPS system is legacy in nature it was built around having access to either the Tech2, MDI, or MDI2 tools to communicate with the vehicle. I think this is the GM TechLine bulletin you read, gm.oemdtc.com/6565/infotainment-system-upgrade-for-android-auto-feature-2016-buick-cadillac-chevrolet-gmc. I suspect from reading this you'll still need one of the scan tools to reach the control modules installed in the vehicle menu, where you would select "K74 Human Machine Interface Control Module - USB Copy / USB File Transfer" where it would then just go to the laptop USB flash drive, and then you plug that USB flash drive into the Infotainment Systems USB port and boot it up from there to apply the update. Suggest you call ACDelcoTDS customer service and confirm.

      The MDI, or a Tech2 for that matter, are needed to learn a new VIN/relearn the old VIN on the radio. But if the radio is the one Chevrolet installed when the vehicle was built in 2006 you shouldn't need this as that model year the radio doesn't lock from simply losing power because it saves the VIN number on an internal chip (an EEPROM).

      I recommend the Tech2 clone (much cheaper than the real thing) for folks with vehicles older than 2008. Ok, so the IPC is "normally" a pretty straight forward SPS update. I've not run into any issues with them, nor aware of any gotchas here as long as the cluster is the correct original one for the vehicle (if one modified a cluster or swapped it from a different vehicle then SPS could get confused). Have you tried to disconnect the MDI and re-attempt to see what TIS2Web is showing for the calibration level of the IPC module now? To determine if its actually bricked or just blank? If SPS can still "see" it I would attempt to reprogram the calibration again, double checking that the calibration selected is correct for your vehicle and its RPOs. If SPS cannot see the IPC, unfortunately it may be bricked (battery power fluctuation from a tired battery during programming can cause this). Before I gave up and replaced a bricked module, I would try to disconnect it from power for awhile and then reconnect and retry one last time.

      SPS is only going to have calibration support for the radio part numbers the factory or dealer would have been authorized to install for a particular model and year. Personally I've only done this procedure with a radio part number that was factory original. If it were me I would skip trying to SPS it with a new calibration and instead use Tech2Win over the MDI to attempr a simple VIN relearn on the replacement radio. F0 diag, model blah blah, F1 Body, more vehicle details blah blah, Special Functions, Radio, VIN Relearn. The menu tree may vary on the Terrain but this is the general jist. Not saying it will work, but worth a try since unlocking the radio is all you are after.

      @DrShock  5 лет назад

      Not getting the context for what "could that have made" refers to in your question. If the radio is in a locked state, and you can't do the VIN relearn the only other solution I'm aware of is the EEPROM pin lift. But I don't have experience with a 2011 Terrain to know if that's an option for you here. Would have to defer to another video for the EEPROM route as I don't do those mods personally. When you do these EEPROM disablement mods it can affect some radio functionality, but the main purpose is that chip stores the VIN and by removing access to it the Theftlock II is bypassed. Not sure what year this approach ended being viable though, 2011 might be "too new" idk.

      Both the GM Tech2 and GM MDI (and MDI2 for that matter) can do that depending on your year. Older vehicles (pre-2008) you usually have to use a Tech2, or the MDI running the subsciption for the Tech2Win emulator though. In some cases you have to use SPS and a whole new calibration file. Also depends on the module, a radio is an obvious example of a common VIN relearn capable module, but an older BCM module may not allow it. Lots of variability, best to google around and see what's possible for your make/model/year/module first.

Couldn't help you with any of that, and unfortunately the TDS help desk is only an 800 number so unreachable from outside the USA.

      Am trying to unlock a GMC terrain 2011 radio using SPS. The older one got burnt another used one was installed part numbers are different. Initial radio comes with a satellite radio while newly installed one doesn't. Getting to sps I didn't see part number for the later radio installed. Choosing the calibration file the "NEXT" button remained dormant. I used the autel jbox and also GM MDI. Any guide one this or could it be because part numbers are different.
      N.B : part number of burnt radio appeared on sps but couldn't find the part number for the used installed radio

      If the problem is a VIN lock, and needing a VIN relearn, yeah a dealer grade scan tool is required. You would need to research whether your vehicle is older and needs the Tech2 scan tool (or Tech2Win emulator for the MDI tool) or whether it's SPS with the MDI tool. It varies by year and model so I couldn't say for sure.

      No, for a radio the dealer tech should just be doing a VIN relearn. It will be like this video shows about midway thru, but not exactly the same scan tool menus since you have a nav radio, ruclips.net/video/ycS_jzIEtRk/видео.html

    Hi am back again. Can I send my GMC terrain 2011 radio to you to have it programmed to my vehicle

    • @DrShock
      @DrShock  5 лет назад

      @Mayowa Odus I appreciate the vote of confidence, but with the equipment I have it's really not possible to calibrate a radio outside the target vehicle. This is a challenge even many GM dealers run into as well, where even they cannot perform a VIN relearn on a radio that was not part of the vehicles original RPO list down to the part number matching. Whenever the donor radio is not a part number from the target vehicles model year, you almost always are going to hit a dead end. I believe your best option in a non-numbers matching situation are the videos that describe disabling the radio's TheftLock II VIN pairing via circuit board modification of the EEPROM itself. Typically just desoldering and lifting the power pin on the chip is enough.

      If you are referring to the green power LED on the right of the MDI, and you're connected to a vehicle that starts and runs fine then you have a power problem. Either you have a bad cable, bad diagnostic connector on the vehicle, or bad MDI. That power LED is just showing +12V DC being there not anything more.

      @@IsmailIsmail-ry1ql I'm not familiar with non-US makes like Opel. But if these functions are part of GDS2, then the only _free_ option would be the HDD package with the sellers MDI. If they are part of SPS, there is no free option. In Chevrolet models with this sort of trans fluid reset, they are older and use the Tech2 scan tool. So Tech2Win thru an MDI could be a _free_ option, if applicable. You'll first have to figure out how this procedure is performed at the GM dealer, to determine your options. I'm not sure what you mean about _hidden functions_ unless it's BCM option related. Typically if GM wanted to hide it, their tools maintain leaving it hidden and do not allow enablement of anything unsupported. Clones follow this being well, _clones_ .

    • @DrShock

      Most GM BCMs are write-once by the scan tool, which means you cannot change the VIN or mileage using the dealership grade tools. All you can do is toggle options, like Cruise Control Yes/No. I did a video on this here ruclips.net/video/Chy9pIzoguA/видео.html

      So the video I linked is just for used BCMs, you didn't mention initially you had a new one. Used BCMs are very difficult to reuse. For a new BCM that's a far easier story, you can just go into New BCM Setup under special functions if you're using a Tech2. For the MDI I believe you need the GDS2 subscription to do the same thing.

      @DrShock  2 года назад

      Yeah, technically, if you can get the j2534.dll installed that was developed for use with the VXDiag Nano or other non-GM hardware, that Windows driver will let it talk to an MDI. Not all TIS2000 ISOs will have this driver included.
      But even with it you're off the main path GM intended. Being off the main path, if you run into SPS problems there will be few to no places to get help. If you keep TIS2000 with the Tech2, as GM did, then there are many sources of help as that's the _normal_ setup. Similarly if you use the MDI with TIS2Web, you can simply call up ACDelcoTDS on the 800 number right now today and get free technical support with it if you run into SPS issues. Time is money, so for these reasons I don't get into any paths you wouldn't find at the GM dealer service area originally.
